By Our Reporter

In a pursuit to mentor the next breed of journalists, media personality Douglas Lwanga is using his latest innovation, the Purple Skills Klinic Foundation, to bridge the gap between media students and those practicing their careers.

On Saturday, June 18, the Skills klinic foundation organized a Media Master class under the theme “New challenges, new opportunities, mentoring the next breed of media personalities.”

The students had a chance to learn a few things from the crème de la crème of the media industry that including Faridah Nakibwe News anchor and talk show host NTVUganda, Dr. Innocent Nahabwe Media Owner Galaxy FM, Canary Mugume News Anchor NBS Television, Andrew Kyamagero News Anchor NTV Uganda, Annatalia Ozze ShowHost at NBS Television and Sanyuka TV, and Josephat Seguya Reporter Vision Group.

The master class also had life coach sessions by Ruth Namutebi and financial literacy coach Frank Kizito CGMA.

Nakazibwe encouraged the students to strive for perfection because Journalism is only rewarding if one is good at it. “Journalism is not a career you will make a lot of money from but it can be a great platform you use to make a lot of money if you do a good job,” she said.

While NBS’s Canary Mugume re-echoed Faridah’s words. “There’s no space for you in media houses, unless you are skilled,” he said.

While Annatalia Ozze reminded the media students of how they need to be competitive to earn a place in the media space. “Whatever you pursue make sure you have a skill with you. There are no jobs for all of you (Media Students). I am also not going anywhere I am still in media,” she said.

On the other hand, NTV’s Andrew Kyamagero emphasized the need for the students to save. “Journalism career doesn’t have much money. The little you make out of it should be saved or invested. You need to have money management skills,” he said.

Bukedde’s Sseguya Josephat re-echoed the need to acquire skills. “I do gossip shows as a by the way. I am a professional print journalist. Be who you are without trying to imitate anybody,” he said.

From the moderator, Bryan Mckenzie to the speakers, the master class that attracted students from various learning institutions such as Makerere University, Kampala International University, Ndejje University, Islamic University, UMCAT, YMCA, and Kyambogo University was a life-challenging session.

The exciting MTN MoMo Nyabo promotion recently came into its 5th edition with dutiful winners including two police officers and a community-based worker, namely; Joseph Okwonji, Richard Okello and Eloka Enkemenya respectively. The brand-new Toyota succeed cars were delivered to the lucky MoMo Nyabo Waaka promotion winners after a random draw system where each of their MTN mobile numbers were selected.

This exciting promotion has been giving away 3 cars a week following a draw that is televised every Thursday at 8pm. A random draw selection style was used to choose from various MoMo pay users and the three gentlemen emerged as the lucky winners who were later announced by Zahara Toto and Richard on NBS TV.

Afande Joseph Okwonji, a police officer was surprisingly shocked when he was called with the news of winning a brand-new car. He expressed doubt at first but was later reaffirmed by the MTN customer service offices in his home town of Jinja telling him that he was indeed the actual winner.

“I have been using MTN network since the 1990’s and over the years it has advanced its technology to not only calling family and friends but I even started using MTN MoMo for paying my solar electricity bills, buying airtime and loading data.” he added.

There were even more strong ululations, cheering and chanting at the Naguru police barracks based in Kampala as Okello Richard was handed keys to his new car as another lucky winner from the MTN MoMo Nyabo promotion. Okello Richard is a police officer who said that winning the car was a great opportunity for him and his family to improve their lives in a great way.

“I am so happy beyond words for this win, I am dancing in my heart because I cannot dance in my police uniform but thank you to MTN and everyone out there should continue using mobile money and MoMo pay because they could be the next lucky winner,” said Okello.

There was joy and celebration at Eloka Enkemenya's home in Soroti upon receiving their brand new car won in the MTN MoMo Nyabo Waaka promo.

The MoMo Nyabo team further went to Soroti where the last winner of the week was handed his brand-new car. Eloka Enkemeya is a community-based worker who also runs his side hustle of growing maize, beans and rice for sale. “It was something I could never have believed or dreamt of. When I got a call that I had won a car from MTN I thought it was these baferre but I went to the nearest customer service center and they confirmed it, that I had truly won.” Said Eloka.

To take part in the promotion, customers have to simply deposit twenty thousand shillings on their MTN MoMo accounts. Apart from the 24 Toyota Succeed cars that are up for grabs, MTN MoMo is also giving away Ugx.100,000/= to 2,000 winners every week.

In this edition of MTN MoMo Nyabo Waaka promotion, 2.5 billion shillings will be awarded to over 16,000 MTN MoMo customers and agents across the country.

As the MoMo Nyabo promotion continues, Ugandans are cautioned to be aware of conmen, emphasizing that all winners are to be contacted only by 0312120000, which is the official calling number from MTN.

MTN has also urged customers to ensure that their MTN mobile money sim cards are registered fully in the same names reflected on their National Identifications. This can be done at any service center countrywide.

Plastic Recycling Industries Uganda Limited (PRI), an initiative of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) in Uganda, has signed a partnership deal with three community-based plastic collection, management, and recycling companies namely Yo-Waste, Ecoplastile and Asante Waste Management.

By Our Reporter

As part of its commitment to improving plastic waste management in the country, Plastic Recycling Industries Uganda Limited (PRI) an initiative of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) in Uganda, has signed a partnership deal with three community-based plastic collection, management, and recycling companies namely Yo-Waste, Ecoplastile and Asante Waste Management.

The newly signed partnership will see the three companies collaborate with CCBA to set-up more collection centers in the community and supply PRI with plastic collected.

Speaking at the MoU signing, Samuel Kangave, the Plastic Recycling Industries Plant Manager called upon the public to change their mindset toward plastic usage and management of the disposal process.

“The use of plastics is deeply embedded in our daily lives, but its mismanagement is a growing menace. We need to re-examine our behavior when it comes to the handling of plastic, at individual, household and even commercial levels. This is a problem that cannot be left just to the government and private sector. We all have a part to play,” Samuel Kangave cautioned.

“We are always looking for opportunities to partner with the public and other private sector players to realign priorities, rethink approaches and change mindsets towards viewing plastic as a valuable resource and business if managed well,” he added.

Rodney Makula, Founder and CEO Asante Waste Management said the company was founded in 2013 to manage and reduce waste while recovering valuable resources and reducing carbon imprint.

“We are happy to share the same values with a reputable and trusted entity such as Coca-Cola. As part of this partnership, we commit ourselves to have this initiative enforced and emphasized in the community and advocate for mindset change,” he said.

“This partnership will enable us to expand our recycling capacity from 30 to approximately 150 metric tonnes of plastic per month by working with at least 1,050 informal plastic waste collectors including youth and women in our communities. Our partnership with PRI involves us becoming one of the off-takers thereby consuming the plastic that PRI is unable to take on and we use this plastic to make roofing tiles. We also supply PRI with PET bottles so it’s a win-win sort of partnership,” said Frank Kamugyisha, the Founder and CEO Eoplastile.

Yo-Waste Limited is a tech company that helps connect businesses and retail customers at home to reliable garbage collection and recyclers. The company was incorporated as a startup by five Makerere university Computer science undergrad students in 2019 to implement their research projects in the community.

According to Kirunda Magoola, Public Affairs & Communication Director at CCBA, under the ‘World without Waste’ campaign, Uganda has continued to register commendable progress collecting at least 78% of the plastic produced.

“Sustainability and promoting inclusivity are at the core of what we do. We are inspired daily by our purpose ‘Refresh the world. Make a difference,’ by doing business in a sustainable way thereby building a circular economy. We take responsibility as members of the community and seek to work with our people; employees, partners, suppliers, and the community to find solutions that benefit all while refreshing our community. We value inclusivity and are happy to note that many women and youth are benefiting from the plastic recycling chain from the grassroots,” he concluded.

In 2021, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa made progress in its waste collection and recycling efforts achieving a 58% recycling rate for FY2021 despite the COVID-19 imposed challenges. The recyclability of the packaging is at more than 95%, tracking ahead of the global target of 100% by 2025 under the campaign ‘World without Waste’.

The students of Kasese Youth Polytechnic Vocational Training Institute (VTI) in Western Uganda are set to reap from the generous donation of a fully furnished Digital Resource center courtesy of the MTN Foundation in partnership with Enabel, a Belgian NGO. This project is hinged on MTN’s strategic priority to build digital skills for digital jobs in alignment to the company’s Ambition 2025 Strategy.

The MTN Uganda Foundation which is the corporate social responsibility arm of MTN Uganda, in partnership with Enabel, an NGO that supports vocational training institutes with a vision to end unemployment and extreme poverty, is extending support to the ‘Skilling Uganda’ National Project in Vocational institutes through the provision of computers and fast internet connection.

This is in fulfillment of the ministry of education and sports national program titled ‘Skilling Uganda’ as part of BTVET strategic plan 2012/3 to 2021/2.

The first phase of the ICT for Development project that happened in 2019/20 supported three VTIs including St. Daniel Comboni vocational institute in Moroto, St. Simon Peter Vocational Training institute in Hoima and Amello Vocational Training institute in Adjumani district with fully furnished ICT labs to promote digital learning in the VTIs.

To start off the second phase of the project, MTN Uganda Foundation alongside Enabel have completed and handed over the first of three ICT labs in Kasese Youth Polytechnic VTI. The ICT lab that cost UGX 65 Million has 10 computers, 4 batteries, a power stabilizer an uninterrupted power supply, and high-speed internet connectivity for a year.

Additionally, MTN has committed another UGX 102 Million for the production of digital education content commonly known as How-to videos that shall be used for training at all the VTIs that MTN and Enabel have supported. These how-to videos shall facilitate training as learning materials for the students of all the beneficiary institutions as well as the neighboring communities.

The entire second phase is ongoing and will cost UGX 297,254,237 which will extend support to three vocational training institutes including Uganda technical college- Kyema in Masindi and Millennium Business school in Hoima and the Kasese Youth Polytechnic VTI.

Speaking at the handover ceremony for the Digital resource center of Kasese Youth Polytechnic, Andrew Tusubira, the MTN Uganda Western Region Commercial Head said that: “The aim is to skill Ugandan youth for the 21st century job market by enabling them to access technical and vocational information online through open education resources for skills development.”

Tusubira further noted that the decision to support vocational institutions was based on the fact that vocational training was found to be an effective way of addressing unemployment, which is a major issue for the youth in Uganda today.

Cornille Bart, the Institutional Development Expert at Enabel said that: “We have been in partnership with the MTN Foundation for the past years to bridge the gap between Vocational Training Institutes and ICT solutions to support the educational needs of young people in districts all over the country. We are happy with the progress that the project has registered so far.”

While delivering the keynote Joe Walusimbi, the Kasese District Resident District Commissioner (RDC) praised MTN Uganda and Enabel for supporting educational services in communities and recognizing government initiatives by supporting the education sector.

“We are in a highly developing technological era that requires all students to be able to have access to ICT tools that accomplish and solve everyday tasks. ICTs play a critical role in shaping the desirable 21st century work and life balance that is required,” he said.

Dickens Koma Olwoch, the Principal of the Kasese Youth Polytechnic VTI expressed his gratitude to the MTN Foundation and Enable for their generosity.

“The Digital resource center is going to create an avenue for our students to learn and share in the vast educational materials available on the web and in the training materials you have shared.” Said Olwoch.

He also noted that the institute will be able to connect with the advanced world of technology that will uplift them to a fast-paced workforce of the 21st century and not have them left behind.

Just last week, MTN equipped over 700 people from the grassroots communities across the country with digital skills that are requisite for the 21st-century job market, under its just-concluded 21 days of Y’ello Care staff volunteerism campaign.

MTN is committed to extending the benefits of a modern connected world to everyone across its footprint, according to its Ambition 2025 strategy.

Ugandan based Cameroonian singer King Roberto signs manager Fred Muzik

Ngam Robert a.k.a King Roberto, a Ugandan musician of Cameroon origin, entrepreneur and Pan African along with his old time buddy, Fred Muzik Pro of Star Link International are at it again. The two recently added to their long list of M.O.U’s together with the pair entering a contract that will see the latter manage the earlier musically.

This comes after King Roberto recently completed setting up his new state of the art Audio and Visual production studio along with an artiste management record label,” King Roberto Entertainment.” The record label looks set to take on a rather uphill task as they look to compete with what has for long been the most successful talent management record label in the country, Swangz Avenue.

The contract makes King Roberto the latest addition to the long star studded list of artistes to have been managed by Fred Muzik Pro. The list comprising of the likes of Gen Geeon, Burundi’s Natacha and Iry Tina, Rwanda’s songstress Knowless Butera, Tommy Plus of Ethiopia, Navy Kenzo of T.Z, Eddy Kenzo with whom he worked for long successfully doing promotion, and a whole host of others.

King Roberto also recently released a new single titled ‘United States of Africa ‘. He couldn’t conceal the Pan African in him hence the song fronting for all round African unity. The Pan African advocate is ardently pushing the dream of our African forefathers. Great leaders like Ethiopia’s Haile Selassie, Lumumba of Congo or Mandela to mention but a few. ” A dream that in it’s realization would see us, Africans rise from being ‘Underdogs’ to becoming ‘Topdogs’ not as a continent but as a nation,as the ‘United States of Africa.’ A dream that will free us from the shackles of poverty and discriminatory borders and boundaries imposed on us by the white man and his selfish desires.”

The song United State of Africa is slowly but steadily gaining ground mainly in Pan African and Rasta circles. It’s groovy blend of Afro percussion makes it even more loveable and danceable and boy! Do Africans love to dance.

King Roberto is more of a hands-on person and his zeal together with his passion for African emancipation wouldn’t let him wait for continental political, social or economical consensus on unity before he did anything for his beloved continent. As a result, Roberto founded and has been successfully running a charity organizations called ‘ The King Roberto African Unity Foundation ‘ that is helping multitudes of needy persons across sub-Saharan Africa mainly in the East, Central and parts of Western Africa.

This foundation keeps the flame of African unity burning albeit a little dim but with it, lives the hopes of many.

The match day was not short of fun as usual as the hosts gave thrill seekers a taste of what entertainment is. From NTV’s Lynda Dane’s incredible hosting skills to the SMACK league darling fire baby Winnie Nwagi’s exceptional performance and mixes by DJ ssese, the edition was spectacular.

The Guinness sponsored league is attracting more sponsors with DStv jumping on board with effect from last match day.

Masaza Cup

By Our Reporter

Buganda Kingdom has launched the 2022 Masaza Cup Football Tournament.

Masaza Cup is an annual Buganda Kingdom Football tournament that was started in 2004, and is comprised of the eighteen Buganda Kingdom counties.

In 2021, Buddu emerged as victors with a 2-0 win against Buwekula.

The 2022 Masaza tournament kicked off with an opening match between Buddu and Mawogola, who played to a goalless draw.

The Katikiro of Buganda Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga said, “Organizing a tournament like Masaza Cup requires a lot of financing for the tournament to be executed as planned, and therefore, we acknowledge the support from all our key partners who have supported Masaza Cup, among other activities organized by the Kingdom.”

Owek. Mayiga added, “The tournament has over the years nurtured talent, provided a source of income for the youth who are actively involved, and contributed to the Kingdom’s and country’s socio-economic growth.”

The tournament will run over a period of 3 months with finals to be held in September 2022.

Last year Airtel Uganda committed Ugx 650 million towards the tournament, and this year, the telco will extend further financial support towards the organization of the tournament. Airtel Uganda has been sponsoring the tournament since 2016.
