The Uganda Alcohol Industry Association (UAIA) has elected a new executive. This was during the association’s Annual General Meeting held at Kati Kati Restaurant recently.

During the AGM, Uganda Breweries Limited’s Juliana Kagwa was elected as the association’s new Vice Chairperson, taking over from Manish Kalla of Grays Uganda.

Ms Kagwa, who previously served as the Secretary-General, joins Nile Breweries Limited’s Onapito Ekomoloit, who has retained his position as Chairperson and Srinivasa Reddy of Premier Distilleries, who remains the association’s Treasurer on the executive committee.

Other committee members include John Magara of Beedee Eff; Raghavendra Reddy Ganesh of Blue Nile Distillers; G. Uwa Maheshwar Reddy of Hema Beverages; and M.S Harinath Reddy of King Albert Distillers.

UAIA is an umbrella body bringing together the registered and regulated producers of adult beverages in Uganda. It was formed in 2006 to align the interests of the manufacturers and promote the responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages.

The association recently unveiled a report on the illicit alcohol market in Uganda, which highlighted the social and economic impact of the continued proliferation of illicit alcohol on consumers.

The report titled Understanding and Sizing Illicit Alcohol Consumption in Uganda contains findings from research conducted in 2020 by Euromonitor International. Among others, it shows that; illicit alcohol makes up 65% of the total market volume in Uganda; its consumption grew by 9% in the last three years, and this increased during the lockdown due to the closure of entertainment establishments.

Additionally, the report found that an approximated UGX 1.6 trillion in revenue goes unrealised by the government and Uganda Revenue Authority due to tax evasion, which is a result of a lax culture of enforcement of the Enguli act, which prohibits the manufacture and consumption of Enguli (alcohol) without a license.

The Uganda Cranes will be aiming for maximum points when they face Kenya’s Harambee Stars at St. Mary’s stadium, Kitende this Thursday in a bid to keep their hopes for qualifying for their first ever World Cup finals alive.

The Cranes who are second in Group E with 8 points were previously held to a goalless draw when they faced the Harambee Stars in the first-leg that was played in Nairobi. They now must beat Kenya and Mali to reach the final play-off round of the road to Qatar 2022.

Although Cranes coach Sredojevic ‘Micho’ Milutin has expressed wary about the upcoming fixture, he says the team is well prepared. “We need to take every match as it is and we are now focusing on the game against Kenya. They will come with pride and ready to spoil the party like they have done before against the Cranes. We are preparing ourselves in the best way possible.” Micho told media.

Kenya are already out of the race to reach Qatar having managed only two points in their last four fixtures putting them 8 points behind Group E leaders, Mali, who stand at 10 points, thus will only be playing for bragging rights.

Commenting about the upcoming game, Henry Njoroge from Airtel Uganda, who are the official Sponsor of the Cranes, said, “After qualifying for AFCON twice, naturally you want to hit the next big thing, which in this case is the world cup. Airtel as the main sponsor is very keen on supporting the team to realize this dream.”

“Our win against Rwanda was huge because it gave us more hope. Now more than ever as we play Kenya today and Mali on Sunday, we need to collectively rally and support the boys from all over the country.” He added.

Uganda Cranes probable starting XI:

Charles Lukwago (GK), Bevis Mugabi, Timothy Denis Awany, Denis Iguma, Isaac Muleme, Khalid Aucho, Bobosi Byaruhanga, Moses Waiswa, Milton Karisa, Fahad Bayo and Steven Desse Mukwala.

The game will air live on UBC TV starting at 4pm.

Ugandans Can Now Invest in Global Companies Starting with just $1

By Reporter

As Africans, land and real estate are often our most popular investment options. And that’s okay. Followed closely by more formal options such as good ole stocks, treasury bonds, T-bills, and fixed deposits.

Now here’s the thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om5bC6AUDPc
These investment options are often big-ticket investments and require a significant cash outlay from investors. This means first-time investors—usually the younger population— can’t build wealth this way as they are either still dependent on their caretakers or simply don’t have enough disposable income to spare.

But that’s about to change

Fractional shares, the new kid on the investing block, are crucial to making investing in stocks easier and more accessible, especially for African countries with lower valued currencies.

Today, we’re launching a revolutionary product, U.S. fractional stocks,” says Ham Serunjogi, CO-founder and CEO of Chipper Cash. “This product is probably our most impactful product since the launch of the original Chipper app just three years ago.”

For the first time ever, Ugandans of all economic backgrounds will be able to invest as little as $1 or 3,500 Uganda Shillings in the world’s largest public companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange – when we talk about unlocking global opportunities, this what we mean. As a proud Ugandan, it means so much to me that we get to launch a product that will empower my fellow countrymen and women,” he continues.

Dan Tumuramye CEO Chipper Cash Uganda

With the launch of Chipper’s Global Stocks Investing product, Ugandans (both old and young) can easily invest in publicly traded global companies such as Facebook, Amazon, Tesla, Netflix, etc.

By Our Reporter

Kenyan Investors are showing keen interest in participating in the MTN IPO following the opening of the offer on October 11 2021 and a series of investor roadshows that took place in Nairobi last week. The offer which closes on November 22 2021 is now open to Kenyans and East African investors.

With 4.4 billion shares on offer, the MTN IPO is the second largest offer in the region after Safaricom in Kenya and the first telecommunication company to be listed on the Uganda Securities Exchange.

Speaking on the sidelines of one of the investor meeting, Cynthia Mbaru, Dyer & Blair Investment Bank Director of Corporate Finance, said that it was very useful to have the MTN Management team visit Nairobi last week where they engaged market analysts and prospective investors on the IPO.

“We hosted a great session with them for our clients which was very informative. Our clients had a lot of questions regarding the business and future prospects. At the end of it, it was clear that MTN is a very profitable company with a strong balance sheet and good growth prospects. Our clients particularly felt that mobile money presented a lot of opportunities for MTN considering the impact MPESA had on Safaricom that they have witnessed,” said Cynthia.

She added that; “with all this information, our clients are now very keen to invest especially as they know that they will earn incentive shares of 5% on top of their application and that the allocation policy puts them behind Ugandans.”

“Now, we are very busy assisting them to open SCD accounts and showing them how to apply for shares online. Our advice at this stage for all investors is to open the SCD account first. As the offer comes to a close, it is important not to leave that process till the end.”

The roadshows were made possible after the Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority (CMAK) had provided its ‘no objection’ for The MTN Uganda Initial Public Offering (IPO) to be marketed in Kenya, allowing the marketing of the shares to both Professional Investors and Retail Investors following the opening of the offer in Uganda on 11th October 2021.

The marketing in Kenya is facilitated by SBG Securities, and Dyer and Blair, both of whom are licensed market intermediaries in Kenya, working in collaboration with their respective affiliates in Uganda. SBG Securities Uganda Limited is the Transaction Advisor and Lead Sponsoring Broker for the MTN Uganda IPO and will be collaborating with SBG Securities Limited (Kenya) to market the IPO in Kenya. Dyer & Blair Uganda is a Lead Retail Broker.

The MTN Uganda IPO offers for sale 4.4 billion ordinary shares, accounting for a 20 percent stake of the company, at a price of UGX 200.00 per share. Each prospective shareholder must apply for at least 500 shares, which, if fully allocated, results in a minimum investment of UGX 100,000 per shareholder.

Kenyan investors will require a valid identification national ID or passport to open a Securities Central Depository (SCD) account at the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) to apply for the MTN Uganda IPO. All East Africans who apply for shares, will receive 5 bonus shares for every 100 shares they are allocated. The MTN Uganda IPO will close on Monday 22nd November 2021 at 4pm EAT.

‘Omuntu’ hitmaker Papa Muteesa tells it all; Gospel Musicians must get paid

Papa Muteesa(Real Names Fred Muteesa) is a new upcoming Music Artist, inclined to producing Gospel, Inspirational and Motivational Music.

Papa Muteesa is a Computer Science Graduate from Kyambogo University.Has worked as VoIP solutions telecom Engineer/Consultant for over 10 years. Today, his hit song Omuntu is trending all over the world.

We managed to track him down and shared with us his story.

Briefly tell us who Papa Muteesa is?

Papa Muteesa(Real Names Fred Muteesa) is a new upcoming Music Artist, inclined to producing Gospel, Inspirational and Motivational Music.

Papa Muteesa is a Computer Science Graduate from Kyambogo University. I have worked as a VoIP solutions telecom Engineer/Consultant for over 10 years.

Papa Muteesa is also a church minister and a youth Pastor in Live Christian Center Ministries located In Gayaza-Wakiso Uganda. He is a family man married and blessed with 3 children.

10 years as a Youth Pastor and now a musician, Don’t you think you sat on your talent for long?

Well, I believe everything happens at the right time. This is the right time and season for my music to be heard. Our Lord is never late.

What finally pushed you to start recording songs after all that long?

Honestly God stirred up everything. I was motivated by my friends around me to venture into singing. Being a music artist was never part of my list of achievements. It all just happened one day, I had my music recording drafts in my smart phone for years until one time a friend heard one of the drafts and he became excited and pushed me to the studio. That is how it all kicked off.

Computer Engineering really sounds like a good profession, why don’t you concentrate there and leave Pastoral work and singing?

Well, I can say Computer work is a Profession, Pastralship is a calling/ministry, and Music is both a ministry and Passion. So in the End, my profession is only meant to help me achieve my passion. My Passion is meant to drive my ministry.

Today Gospel music is full of drama, Gospel singers accusing Pastors of not supporting them, why are you joining the controversial side?

Drama and Controversy have never hindered God from doing His will. I am compelled to believe that it’s for exactly those reasons that God is spinning up new talent everywhere. I believe I will be able to help build and grow the gospel industry.

Maybe with my profession and experience I could help advise other musicians. Let’s see how this turns out. But at the moment I am focusing on getting my music and message out there, to touch every heart.

What is your take on the ongoing debate that gospel musicians shouldn’t be paid for their music. They sing for God.

Well I totally disagree. Every minister should receive the earthly benefits that come with serving God. God himself promises benefits for those who serve him. I don’t even need to quote a scripture for this. Let’s look at the reality.

Producing Music requires Money. (Are there free Music Production and videography Studios? I have not heard of any). After getting the audio, you have to produce videos, and you have to facilitate the whole crew. And after the song gets out there, you are invited to perform in concerts, you need to transport yourself. In addition to that, you have to keep supporting your family.

This is a very big topic that I have actually done extensive research about; I think most musicians and churches here in Uganda need guidance on this particular issue. This is one of the very reasons why the church is losing a lot of talent to the secular world; we need to handle it smartly.

How many songs/ albums are out now?

I have 14 songs out at the moment. That makes 2 Ep’s each with 7 songs. one EP is entitled ‘Redemption ‘and the Second is entitled ‘Here I am’. You can find them on spotify, Apple music, and all other streaming stores under the stage name, Papa Muteesa

Let’s talk about your latest omuntu, sounds so perfect, who wrote it, recorded and produced it?

I have written all the 14 songs. I produced the Music in Audio one Studio, with Paddy Man and Emmy Wonders as the producers.

What is the message behind ‘Omuntu’ song?

Omuntu, is basically talking about People’s Hearts, and Hypocrisy both to fellow Men and God Himself. The message is that Man’s Heart cannot be trusted.

Omuntu is receiving a lot of air plays and great online reception, what is the magic?

Well all I can say, is that I have received a lot of Guidance from my friends who have had massive experience in this field of music. Kim-xp has guided me so much from the very beginning.

For example I have made sure I have presence on all social media platforms, so that I am easily reachable by anyone who wants to know more about my music that is how it all starts, getting organized.

How can someone buy or get your omuntu song from?

Omuntu will be out on YouTube very soon, but it’s on any streaming platform. The link below can help you check it out.

https://papamuteesa.lnk.to/omuntu

How has internet impacted on your music career especially the Omuntu song?

Well, My Omuntu was already referenced by World a Raggae music team, which launches the best reggae songs in the world. They have posted me on most of their social media platforms.

My Music is all licensed by music Distributors and organized on all streaming platforms. I have done all this remotely via internet with my team.

Lastly, how do you balance family, church and music?  We have seen many broken families of pastors and gospel singers of late. What is your advice?

Well I can simply say, if Family is work, both parties have to desire to make it work. I would never start music if my family is not behind me. The reason is, that will be a failed project.

MY Wife has been there from the very beginning. She has listened to most songs before anyone else. If she says that song will not do, we drop it.

I will take this opportunity to thank her for standing by my side.

By Our Reporter

MTN Mobile Money Ltd has increased the number of Senkyu points a customer gets to 15 points for every UGX 100 charged in MoMo withdrawal fees. The points are given on the withdrawal fees that the customer is charged i.e., for every 100/- a customer is charged they receive 15 Senkyu points.

In addition, sending money between MTN MoMo customers on the MTN MoMo app has been made free, during the promotion that will go on till early 2022.

MTN Senkyu is a customer loyalty initiative aimed at rewarding customers who use MTN services. Once a customer dial *141# and joins the Senkyu program, they start receiving points for using MTN services including loading airtime and bundles, making calls, sending messages, using data and MTN MoMo services such as sending money, making payments, depositing, and withdrawing at a mobile money agent.

While making the announcement, Stephen Mutana, the Ag. Chief Executive Officer MTN Mobile Money Uganda Limited said the promotion’s objective MTN is to reward its customers who ardently use its services.

“As we draw closer to the end of the year, we want to recognize and appreciate our customers who have continuously used MTN services. That is why we want to reward them with loyalty points that can be used to enjoy more of those services,” Mutana explained.

Mutana said the decision is informed by the increased person to person transactions over the last two years.

According to recent statistics from Bank of Uganda, person to person transaction values have grown from UGX1.1trillion in January 2021 to UGX1.4 trillion in June 2021.

He further explained that the promotional offer serves to drive affordability of cashless transactions with the aim of boosting financial inclusion across the country.

“We at MTN believe that through initiatives such as this one, we can increase financial inclusion which is necessary because each and every single person deserves access to mobile financial services,” he noted.

Mobile money is currently the biggest contributor to financial inclusion in the country, standing at 78% according to the Finscope survey of 2018.

This promotion is yet another effort by MTN to drive affordability of mobile financial services for its customers following a reduction in withdrawal rates earlier in May this year.
