Best Part-Time Jobs: My 6 Favorite Solutions that Get You Paid

By Staff Writer

Many companies are looking for part-time employees, whether it is seasonal help during busy months, freelance and consulting support as needed, or routine help throughout the year. We have compiled a list of the best part-time jobs based on payments and job prospects.

  1. Accountant

Accountants are responsible for the preparation, maintenance, and analysis of financial statements, accounts, and taxes. In addition to ongoing maintenance and oversight of financial transactions, accountants must also ensure that the company’s financial systems operate efficiently and within the law. They are expected to offer customers a variety of ways to reduce costs and increase profits.

Accountants must have appropriate education in accounting or related fields, and, depending on the job, they may need to be certified public accountants. Accounting services are in high demand during the tax season when organisations or individuals can hire part-time accounting support.

  1. Delivery truck driver

Truck drivers work in a restricted area to transport goods between local warehouses, distribution centres, businesses, and households. Since delivery truck drivers are limited to trucks with cargo, they are generally responsible for picking up, transporting and unloading packages and small loads.

To become a truck driver, you usually need to have a high school diploma and a driving license. Most companies also require one month of on-the-job training, and of course, you need to have a valid driver’s licence and good driving experience.

  1. Writer

Writers produce content for a wide variety of purposes, from forex trading websites to blogs like Forextime, books on CFD trading and magazines, advertisements, songs, scripts for TV and movies, and more. Authors and copywriters can work within a company or organization in a specific area such as marketing or media, or they can freelance for a variety of clients in Nigeria or any other country.

While all of these jobs hold excellent part-time positions, many of them operate on a freelance system. This means that individuals — such as writers, IT professionals, consultants, designers, and more — work independently for different clients.

  1. Graphic designer

Graphic designers work in programs like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator to create graphics for a wide variety of purposes. Graphic designers can work on anything from creating custom logos and font types to designing websites and email templates, creating promotional materials, including advertisements, postcards and banners, making original digital illustrations.

While some designers work for themselves in one company, others freelance for a variety of clients, thus creating a strong part-time market for graphic designers.

  1. Programmer

Computer programmers write computer software, although many programmers are skilled in software development and can also troubleshoot computer code such as Java or C ++. A successful programmer is fluent in the technical part of the software. Since not all companies can afford their own programmers, many rely on part-time IT professionals to solve any technology problem on a case-by-case basis.

  1. Editor/Proofreader

Editors plan, coordinate, review, and edit content for publication in books, newspapers, magazines, email, or websites. Editors consider story ideas and determine which topics will appeal to readers of the publication. Proofreaders review the final version of a document, book, newspaper, or any other written communication after editing to make sure there are no mistakes. Proofreaders must have a keen eye to find spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, typos, or misuse of grammar.

Other well-paid part-time jobs

Management analysts, also known as management consultants, study the systems of an organisation to figure out how to maximise efficiency. Taking into account a variety of factors, including staffing, organisational structure, and workflows, management analysts seek to maximise profits by reducing costs and increasing revenues.

The job of market analysts is to study market trends — what people buy, what they want to buy, and what they are willing to pay to help businesses better find target customers. While most market analysts work full time, others work as consultants or freelancers for a variety of clients.

Network and computer system administrators set up and maintain an organisation’s internal networks and internet systems to ensure that everyone is getting a good connection that allows them to work effectively on the network. Administrators of networks and computer systems are also responsible for ensuring the security of the network.

If you have the knack for posting content that goes viral, or enough Instagram and Twitter hype, you can get yourself organised to promote something on social media. Companies, small businessmen, individuals — all want to build a personal recognisable brand, and therefore — willingly agree to pay for its promotion. Anyway, you visit social media every day, so why not get paid for it?

Basically, these options will not make you rich, but the job will help you stay afloat while you build your own business.

Equity Bank moves to support agribusinesses in Northern Uganda

Equity Bank, Communcations and Marketing Manager, Philip Otim

By Our Reporter

Having successfully launched the structural Commodity Finance Loan product in Lira, Equity Bank Uganda has now moved to launch the same innovative product in Gulu and Arua. The structural Commodity Finance Loan is a financing solution aimed at supporting the growth of agribusinesses and smallholders in Northern Uganda.

The structured commodity finance loan will allow agribusinesses to borrow against their agricultural inventory which can be used as collateral for security and repayment. Agribusinesses stand to benefit from SCF by receiving financing to ensure that cash flow is available for maximum output; with the intention of repaying the loans once sale of the agricultural produce is complete. A financing solution that will allow them to sustain customer demand and have access to new markets and customers.

Commenting during the launch of the new financing solution, Equity Bank Uganda’s Head of Retail Banking, Mr. George Kato said, “Agriculture remains a key sector in our economy and as Equity, we have chosen to invest in up scaling smallholder and medium holder farmers because they play a key role in the growth of the economy. With the new Structured Commodity Financing, farmers and agribusiness SMEs can now effectively manage their liquidity and mitigate against risks related to the production, purchase and sale of farm outputs.”

Working with the farmers, Equity will isolate assets which have relatively predictable cash flows attached to them through price discovery and discounting. The agribusinesses will then use these to mitigate risk and secure affordable credit with flexible repayment terms.

With the new facility, customers can now access a loan amounts of between shs 30 million to shs 5 billion at competitive interest rates per annum determined on a case-by-case basis and repayable within flexible periods as agreed during the application process.

Farmers and agribusiness SMEs looking to access the new financing solution will need to have an existing bank account with Equity Uganda while new customers will be required to open new accounts with the bank and provide previous banking history and statements.

All agribusiness SMEs will also have to provide proof of operation in the commercial agribusiness sector for at least one year and demonstrate ability to repay the loans as well as meet the other mandatory loan application requirements.

Other than SCF financing, Equity offers farmers various financing solutions including production loans which aims at improving crop and livestock production, asset finance loans for farm machinery such as tractors, marketing loans and processing loans which allows them to add value to their farm inputs and increase sales. Equity Bank also highlighted supporting the women in Agribusiness in Northern Uganda through their women finance product EquiMama.

Investment Expert Aéko Ongodia examines the return opportunity and risks in investing in the MTN IPO

Aéko OngodiaBy Aéko Ongodia

MTN, the dominant mobile network operator in Uganda for the last 20 years is offering up a fraction of its shares to the public in an initial public offering requiring a minimum investment of UGX 100,000. MTN has made it so easy to invest in its IPO, you can dial *165*65# follow a few steps and buy shares in under 30 seconds. The offer closes on November 22, 2021, and will officially be available to buy and sell from December 6, 2021, on the Uganda Securities Exchange.

The MTN IPO has generated plenty of polarizing debate, as it should. Some sections of the public are saying it is such a great opportunity to invest your savings while another section says over their dead bodies.

As a general principle, if you earn income, regularly or not, you should strive to save in the same frequency. If you earn daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly, it is prudent to save some of that income in those same frequencies to meet your future financial goals such as retirement, child’s education, or building a house.

Saving is a necessary but not sufficient condition to building wealth and meeting your future financial goals. If you are lucky enough to establish a regular savings habit; congratulations! But your work is not done yet. You still need to invest your savings nearly in the same frequency otherwise the value of your savings will be eroded over time by bank charges and/or inflation.

The MTN IPO presents an opportunity to invest some of your savings, but first; let us examine the return opportunity and risks in turn.

The Opportunity

Dominant market player: nearly everyone who owns a small business would want to be in a position in which their stall dominates their corner of the market. If you achieve this feat, you could, in theory, absent local regulation, exert control over prices and therefore the profits you make. Does owning a piece of a dominant player in the telecom and mobile money industry make any economic sense?

Diverse revenue streams: MTN generates most of its revenue from three lines of business: voice, data, and mobile money. Voice is the biggest contributor to revenue, but growth has stalled although the margins are healthy. According to the prospectus, the data penetration in Uganda is still low and the company views this as a huge growth opportunity. The mobile money platform possibly presents the largest growth opportunity since it is ubiquitous and is increasingly being leveraged to provide more sophistical financial services beyond the original peer-to-peer payments. Will revenues from these lines of businesses grow over time?

Growing population: Uganda has upwards of 45 million people and the population is growing at roughly 2.5%. These people will need to call each other, access the internet, and will probably use mobile money with a lot more intensity over the next decade. Will a company that has served a small population in the past and generated mind-blowing revenues, as a result, have any chance of serving a larger population and still be as profitable?

The Risks

Growth is restricted by geography: MTN Uganda is a franchise of MTN Group and therefore cannot grow by going after new markets in other countries. This is the same problem franchise businesses such as Stanbic Uganda face. They have to figure out how to grow their revenue within a limited geographical area. Question: do you think owning a company serving a population of 45m people is too small?

Corporate governance: MTN Uganda, nearly since its inception has had the same Chairman who has been an excellent steward in the initial 23 years. We are buying into a future that is likely to be different from the last two decades. Is this the best board to see us through the next decade?

Political and regulatory risk: MTN has particularly suffered a spectacular public embarrassment when a number of their key officials were arbitrarily and unceremoniously bundled out of the country without any clear explanation from the authorities. Question: do you think MTN will find a way to operate and have better protection from such arbitrary treatment now that it will be operating as a public company owned by thousands of Ugandans?

Recommendation

First, there is no truly risk-free investment. Investment involves weighing up the opportunity for returns against the risk you need to undertake to earn them and then making a rational economic decision if you can. Owning a piece MTN still makes economic sense on balance.

To invest, you take the savings that are already safe in your pocket or bank, (assuming they are safe in any of those places) and deploy them into an asset e.g., land, shares, fixed deposit, and so on (literally taking risk) in the hope of being reward with a decent return at the end of your investment period. There are no guaranteed returns for any asset. The act of buying shares in the MTN IPO is no different from the investment decisions we frequently make.

Should you invest in the MTN IPO? Absolutely! But do not bet the entire farm on it. Allocate a small amount if you have not already. If you have, allocate a bit more if you can afford it. Personally, and for our clients at XENO, a shareholding in MTN will form part of our investment portfolio but it will not be “The Portfolio”.

Declaration: As is customary for me every month for the last 16 years, I have invested some of my savings in the financial markets, this month it just happens to be MTN. That was not the case last month, and it is unlikely to be the case next month, but I will still invest, and you should too.

The Future of The Online Casino Industry in Uganda

By Staff Writer

The first thing that comes up to your mind when you think of casino gambling is probably Las Vegas or maybe Monte Carlo. While these cities are known among gamblers across the globe, the second largest continent Africa is home to a few countries that are very welcoming towards gambling.

While Africa as a whole is not famous for gambling as gambling activities are banned in many countries, there are a few African countries that cater to online casino players and one of these is Uganda.

Before we examine Ugandan gambling laws and regulations, we have to go back in time and examine the earliest days of gambling activities. While gambling activities are banned in most Northern African countries, there is evidence of gambling activities among residents of the sub-Saharan African region.

More specifically, archaeologists uncovered dice that were used around 3000 BC. Back in the seventeenth century, the Chinese imported thoroughbred horses for the local stock and one century later, horse racing was introduced.

The vast majority of the Northern African region banned gambling activities before colonialism. However, gambling activities still thrived. There is also some evidence of Madagascar residents engaging in gambling activities centuries before the very first legal casinos opened their doors.

Fast forward to the present day, South Africa is home to the biggest, most profitable gambling market in Africa. However, countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and Tanzania are also homes to lucrative gambling markets thanks to lenient gambling laws and regulations.

Gambling Laws and Regulations in Uganda and Other African Countries

Africa is a stunning continent rich in various mineral resources. As mentioned in the previous section, not many African countries are gambling nations, but African folk has been involved in gambling activities since ancient times.

Over the last several years, the biggest African gambling markets underwent major changes following the rising adoption of digital devices and of course, rising Internet penetration rates.

When it comes to the legality of gambling in Africa, many African countries have rather strict gambling laws and regulations such as Sudan. There are not many gamblers among residents of Sudan. In Morocco, gambling activities are quite popular. However, African countries with the most developed gambling industries are:

  • South Africa
  • Kenya
  • Nigeria
  • Tanzania
  • Uganda
  • Botswana
  • Ghana

Many international sites cater to Ugandan players as shown here. Licensed and regulated, these sites legally operate in the country, they feature impressive gaming libraries, support a variety of local payment options, and grant generous bonuses and promotions.

While Ugandan residents are fans of gambling, over eighty percent of the gambling activities in Africa come from South African players. South Africa has very welcoming gambling laws and regulations and many internationally renowned sites cater to South Africans.

Kenya was the very first African country to legalize online gambling activities. In Kenya, international sports betting and online casino sites operate without any restrictions. Mobile gambling is also popular among Kenyan residents.

Nigeria is home to the second most profitable gambling industry in Africa. In Nigeria, both local and international sites operate, and the industry’s revenues go over US$45 million.

Tanzania is not only home to renowned websites but also thriving land-based casinos. After the Gambling Act legalized all forms of gambling, the country experienced a major economic boost.

Just like South African, Nigeria, and Kenya, Botswana is also home to a well-regulated gambling industry with legally operating land-based casinos, online casinos, as well as online sports betting sites. Another African country that is rather friendly towards gambling activities in Ghana.

Ghanaian players have access to many reputable offline and online establishments. These activities have also been thriving in Uganda as the country’s lawmakers are rather friendly to lotteries and online gambling in general. Gambling activities in Uganda are regulated by the Lotteries and Gaming Act 2016 and this act:

  1. Established the National Gaming Board of Uganda
  2. Formed Data Protection laws and regulations
  3. Established National Information Technology Authority
  4. Devised regulatory framework
  5. Set criteria to license submission and compliance requirements
  6. Set online casinos and lotteries licensing and other fees

The Legality of Gambling Online in Uganda

After the Lotteries and Gaming Act came into force in 2016, all forms of casino gambling activities as well as lotteries and sports betting have been legalized. The National Gaming Board of Uganda is responsible for overseeing all forms of gambling activities.

The National Gaming Board of Uganda is also responsible for issuing licenses to sports betting and online casino gaming sites and lotteries. Gambling is extremely popular among Ugandans, especially young adults.

According to this report, there were over twelve million active Internet users in the country in the first month of 2021. Since Uganda is home to over 46 million people as estimated in January of this year, its internet penetration rate stands at around 26.2%. The country’s internet penetration rate increased by over one million in twelve months from 2020 to 2021. As of January, this year, there were over twenty-eight million mobile subscriptions in Uganda.

Thanks to the increasing adoption of digital devices and exponentially rising internet penetration rate, the future of online casinos in Uganda looks brighter than ever. As one of the fastest-growing industries in Uganda, the online gambling industry is expected to attract more internationally renowned companies.

The internet will also become more accessible throughout the country. Moreover, as western influence persists in the country, more people will become interested in such activities.

Mobile payments are also expected to revolutionize the Uganda online gambling industry. In addition to Visa, Neteller, Skrill, and PayPal, Ugandan players prefer making deposits using e-wallet Airtel and MTN.

The introduction of more mobile payment options is a huge improvement over standard banking options. Thanks to MTN and M-Pesa that also operated in Tanzania, South Sudan, and Rwanda, players get to easily fund their accounts.

The introduction of more mobile payment options had a tremendous impact on the Uganda online casino industry. By all accounts, mobile gaming is the future of the Ugandan iGaming industry. Speaking of what the future may hold, South Africa will most certainly remain a pacesetter with other African gambling nations including Uganda following its footsteps.

Uganda and other African countries are also setting the pace to embrace emerging technologies, and these are the same technologies revolutionizing the iGaming industry. Back in 2019, new gambling laws and regulations were passed by the government. However, new age restrictions will not negatively affect the rise of the Ugandan iGaming industry in the years to come.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), the leading philanthropy empowering African entrepreneurs from all 54 African countries, has selected 4,949 entrepreneurs from across Africa for its 2021 Entrepreneurship Programme. Of these, 296 entrepreneurs have been selected from Uganda.  The 212 female and 84 selected Uganda entrepreneurs will each receive non -refundable USD 5,000 seed capital.

The 2021 beneficiaries were selected from a pool of over 400,000 applications, based on their innovation, performance, and growth potential to create jobs and eradicate poverty on the continent. Consisting of both new start-ups and existing small businesses, the 2021 Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurs have undergone world-class business training, mentorship and coaching and will have a life-time access to the Tony Elumelu Foundation alumni network.

Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Mr. Tony O. Elumelu shared, “To you young African entrepreneurs – work hard, dream dreams, and be very disciplined. You must continue to think of impact. The entrepreneurship journey is not linear – there are ups and downs, but by staying focused and resilient, ultimately success will come your way. The future of our continent is in your hands. What you do as entrepreneurs will go a long way in lifting Africa out of poverty. I am happy that our female entrepreneurs are doing very well, with 68% representation this year.”

He added: “To our African leaders – these young, intelligent, energetic hardworking, resilient Africans are ready to go. We need to keep creating the right enabling environment to enable our young ones to succeed. We must realise that their success is success for all of us on the continent. We must prioritise them because nations and continents that prioritise their people, succeed. To my fellow business leaders, let us realise that in the 21st century and beyond, it is about impact, legacy and about how we work together to power people out of poverty. It is such a great feeling to see 5000 young Africans also commence their own entrepreneurial journeys today.”

Speaking at the event, Director-General, International Cooperation and Development, European Commission, Mr. Koen Doens stated: “I remember very well, a few years ago in Brussels when I first met Tony Elumelu at one of the events his Foundation was organising. Both of us were struck by how there was such a clear match between his vision on how he could support African entrepreneurship and the European Union’s own vision on how we wanted to support African entrepreneurship. Ever since, our partnership has embodied this same spirit that ultimately African growth cannot neglect the huge potential, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit that harbours so many Africans, especially young people and women. I am extremely glad our partnership is moving into this active stage, and I am very glad that over 2400 women will benefit from the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s training programme, and will get seed capital to support their ideas. I am extremely happy that at the European Union, we are able to be part of this great endeavour and to support it.”

Also speaking at the event, Assistant Administrator, UNDP/Director, UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa stated: “Our partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation on youth entrepreneurship is informed by our belief that Africa will only succeed when young Africans are given the opportunity to excel. This is what has inspired us to invest more than $20 million in emerging African entrepreneurs since we entered into our partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation. Our joint ambition is to empower 100,000 young African entrepreneurs over the next ten years across Africa, recognising that entrepreneurship is the only way dreams can be realised.”

Speaking, Secretary General, OACPS, H.E. Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti stated: “On behalf of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), I would like to heartily commend the Tony Elumelu Foundation for this extraordinary achievement. We are proud to have partnered with the Tony Elumelu Foundation and our longstanding partner, the European Union to unlock the potential of 2420 young African women through this TEF Entrepreneurship Programme, providing mentorship and funding, to grow and sustain these small businesses.”

Speaking on the panel with Mr. Elumelu, 2015 Tony Elumelu Entrepreneur, Hauwa Liman, Founder of Afrik Abaya, shared: “I am always proud to say that I am from the inaugural cohort of the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme. My business is located in Kaduna, Nigeria. I benefitted from this Programme in 2015, and it opened up lots of doors and opportunities. It is not just about the seed capital, but what really fascinates me about the Programme is the knowledge. I call it a mini-MBA programme, because from the ideation stage it teaches you how to really articulate your business, and it gave me my first business plan. The network, visibility and opportunities are endless. My entrepreneurship experience cannot be complete without the Tony Elumelu Foundation. I will start exporting soon courtesy of the Foundation. We now employ ten permanent staff and an additional eight staff on a commission basis.”

Tony Elumelu Foundation CEO, Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu, concluded the event stating: “Today, we have trained ten times more young African entrepreneurs than we have trained from 2015 to 2019 combined. Today in 2021, we will be paying out a record US$24,750,000 directly to the hands of African entrepreneurs from all 54 African countries. This is impact.”

Since its inception, the Tony Elumelu Foundation has now funded a total of 15,847 entrepreneurs who have created more than 400,000 direct and indirect jobs and counting. Through TEFConnect, the Foundation’s proprietary digital platform, it has provided capacity-building support, advisory and market linkages, to over 1.5 million Africans.
