It’s good news for the Ugandan music industry as a new package is set to be dropped for it to enjoy.

News reaching our desk is that royalties to artistes from all members of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) have resumed for the content that they broadcast across their platforms.

This is subject to a timely alignment being done at UPRS in accordance with its legal mandate and organizational structure as licensed by URSB just like we were doing in the past.

The revamp will be effective from July, 1, 2021.

This was concluded in a successful engagement on Thursday, June 17, 2021, comprising of officials from the UPRS (Uganda Performing Right Society), URSB (Uganda Registration Services Bureau), UNCC (Uganda National Cultural Center), UCF (Uganda Cultural Forum), and UCC (Uganda Communications Commission).

The sitting of the bodies was in the spirit of supporting Uganda’s Arts and Creative Industry.

It also saw Gen. Salim Saleh, the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation, and Kin Kariisa, Chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters Executive attend.

UCC is expected to issue a circular to all Broadcasters communicating this understanding and goodwill from the stakeholders in the spirit of promoting their own and supporting the artistes.

By Our Reporter

MTN Uganda has added 076 to its existing family of number ranges that include 077, 078, 031 and 039.

The number range was granted by the sector regulator, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) allowing MTN customers to now acquire numbers with 076 prefix.

“We are now issuing new customers on the MTN network mobile numbers with the prefix range starting from 0760000000 to 0760999999,” MTN Chief Marketing Officer,” Somdev Sen revealed, adding that,“The New number range of 0760 is at the moment available to prepaid customers to connect to all our services just like we currently have on all our other number ranges.”

Key to note is that this development will have no effect on already existing numbers which can continue operating as they have.

“The existing prefixes and number ranges are not being phased out in anyway and customers can continue to use their numbers normally,” Somdev emphasized.

However, MTN has stopped selling 077 and 078 ranges as those are no longer available on the network which speaks to the telecom’s growing subscriber base.

Somdev however explained that customers can still get the old number ranges subject to their availability due to recycling.

Phone number recycling is the reintroduction of a deactivated/disconnected number into the pool of available numbers eligible for assignment to a new customer. This happens when the previous owner of the numbers has not used their line for any activity for more than six months and has not formally notified MTN of their intention and interest to keep that number.

To acquire a new number within in the new 0760 range, customers can visit the nearest MTN Shop or Duuka with their national ID and buy a new SIM card at the usual cost of Shs2000.

YoTV’s Chief Executive Officer, Aggrey MugishaBy Our Reporter

Launched last year, YOTV Channels has become a one-stop center for the best Ugandan live Television and Radio content accessible on your phone, tablet or computer anywhere.

We had a moment to catch up with YoTV’s Chief Executive Officer, Aggrey Mugisha. The youthful innovator talks video streaming and innovation in Uganda, YOTV and the MTN partnership.

Tell us about Aggrey Mugisha?

My name is Aggrey Mugisha and I am the CEO of YOTV. I hail from Mbarara and I am one of six children born to my parents.

Why did you create YOTV?

One day, my partners; Mathias Nyombi, Yiga Mubarak and I stumbled on an innovation while in Europe. It was only starting out there. It was still rough but then it sparked something in us. We realized that the world is busy and gets even busier by the day. People do not have time to watch TV and others get home tired and do not have the strength to watch TV. So we came up with a solution of a smartphone. Everyone carries a smartphone with them at all times. We realized in order to keep radio and TV relevant, we needed to move them to the phone. We conceived the idea in 2016 and only gave birth to it last year in February. It was quite a long journey to perfect and bring it to market.

What is YOTV and how does it work?

YOTV is an internet protocol television (TV). It is a one-stop centre for all local television channels, radio and international movies. We aggregated all local TVs in one application. With one click you can access all local TVs and radios. There are about 300 radios in Uganda. You do not need apps for all the individual companies. YOTV has the ability to record a live program and also has a catch-up feature which allows users to watch a program that aired on TV in the past.

You are associated with MTN, where does it come in?

Cognizant of the economic situation in our country and its impact on the affordability of internet, we realized that the cost of internet would have a lot of bearing on the success of YOTV. If a product like was going to see the light of day, we needed subsidized data so when MTN looked at it, it was excited by the concept and came in as a data partner. They have passion for content, they have passion for seeing Uganda’s technology startups grow and I want to commend them on that. That has been the real difference, people streaming without worrying that their data is going to run out.

So how do you prevent the subscribers from breaking the bank to watch YOTV?

We have four plans and these are on MTN. We have one at UGX500 which allows a customer to watch for one hour even without data. For UGX1000, you can watch YOTV for one day and for UGX2500 you can watch movies, TV and radio for a week. For UGX10,000, you enjoy YOTV for a month. That is why the partnership with MTN was very critical for our sustainability.

Since you launched, how has the performance of the app been?

So we launched in February 2020 with MTN. Since then, which is about two months over a year, we are almost at 600,000 subscribers, we surpassed the half a million mark. That is big and we are proud of it. It shows how much Ugandans appreciate the service and it encourages us to do more for them and bring more to the platform.

Now that you have dipped your toes in the sea of video streaming, how would you describe the Ugandan market and its culture?

Uganda’s video streaming industry is nascent. We still have an issue with content production. It is expensive and our economy isn’t very capable of producing high quality expensive content. We have people that try, but we still have a challenge there. There is also a lot of uncommercialized content which is a big problem. In addition, consumer culture is accustomed to Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood. Local content meaning Ugandan movies are the last to be chosen; but it is a journey we need to change which is what we are doing now. That is why YOTV and MTN brought Kibanda Xpress. We believe our collective voice will help local content raise to the top.

What is Kibanda Xpress?

Kibanda Xpress is the latest addition to YOTV Channels. It is a channel that houses Ugandan movies. MTN and YOTV are passionate about boosting the local film industry and that is why we created a dedicated channel for local
content to help the local film industry grow.

What are some of the challenges you have faced during this journey as a startup?

There is a mindset challenge where people are convinced that TV has to be on the wall and on a big screen. That is a big challenge that we have taken on patiently. There is a challenge of funding of course as a startup, but we will get there because we get better with each passing day.

What is the future of YOTV?

We continue working and innovating to bring Ugandans more content and additional features on this platform. And in the future, we hope to increase our subscriber numbers even more.

Startimes to reward viewers in France Vs Portugal clash

The Euro 2020 group stage ends on Wednesday with crucial matches in the Group of Death. European champions Portugal face world champions France to get qualified for the knock-out stage, since Ronaldo and Mbappé’s teams failed to win their second group match. The match will be aired live on the StarTimes sport channels.

Football fans are used to expect the unexpected. And that is exactly what happened in the so-called Group of Death at Euro 2020.

The 2016 finalists France and Portugal meet in the Puskás Aréna in Budapest on Wednesday and after their opening games, their fans thought that both Les Bleus and the Seleção would have already qualified for the knock-out stage by the time they face each other.

But in their second matches the unexpected happened.

France needed an Antoine Griezmann goal midway through the second half to draw 1-1 with Hungary, while Portugal gave away a Cristiano Ronaldo lead in Munich against a rampant Germany that ended up winning 4-2. It was the first time that a title holder conceded four goals.

The results leave France topping Group F with four points, Germany and Portugal both have three points, but Germany are second on the head-to-head basis. Hungary have one point.

This leaves the group wide open ahead of the final round of group matches, with all four teams still having a chance to progress.

But with the likes of Ronaldo, Rúben Dias and Bruno Fernandes on the one side and Griezmann, Kylian Mbappé, Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba on the other, it is not surprising that most of the neutral fans will focus on the rematch of the 2016 final.

Portugal, who won the 2016 final 1-0 through Eder’s extra-time goal, will feel the pressure ahead of Wednesday’s game. The Seleção will expect Germany to avoid defeat at home against Hungary, leaving Portugal needing to beat France if they want to finish in either of the two places that would guarantee a place in the round of the last-16.

Although the top four third-placed teams from the six groups will also advance to the knock-out stages, they will be facing a group winner in the next round.

Portuguese coach Fernando Santos took the blame for the defeat against Germany, but remains confident. “Whether we progress or not is still up to us. And we must respond against France.”

But if Portugal have some pressure on them, France will also be feeling the heat. A defeat or draw for them and a victory for Germany would see Les Bleus slip from first to third and anxiously looking at the results from the other groups.

A win for Didier Deschamps’ team on the other hand, would secure a game in the next round against a third-placed team.

Deschamps, however, might be without Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembélé, who had to be taken off with a knee injury after coming on as a substitute against Hungary.

With so much at stake, football fans will be spoilt for choice as both games are being player at the same time. But African football fans need to miss none of the best action as the Euros are being shown live and in HD on the StarTimes channels.

Euro 2020 fans who haven’t joined StarTimes, simply buy our decoders at 39,000/- and 99,000/- for antenna and dish respectively or download the StarTimes ON app to watch the Euro 2020 Live and in HD with local commentary. Prizes in our weekly draws include: UGX 10m, Bodaboda, LED TVs, headsets etc. The next draw will be on 26th June 2021 at 9pm on Sanyuka TV.

Existing customers can also have a chance in the draw when they simply pay monthly subscription for basic, classic, smart or super bouquets on both antenna and dish decoders.

These songs were released in 2020 during the first phase of the lockdown thus branding them lockdown anthems.

In 2021, we are yet to get a big songs from brand new talents but from the look of things, Nisay P is likely to get the first one thanks to his dancehall song dubbed Musege.

During their daily show, Mc Kats, Douglas Lwanga and Dvj Mercy Pro branded the song it a lockdown anthem that will make people sing while in their houses because the lyrics are in sync with the current situation and the beat brings the dance vibe to life. “This guy will make us sing whatever he wants. This is the lockdown anthem.” Mc Kats responded to Douglas Lwanga who had previously said, “The lyrics and the beat on this song are mad. It is the song of the lockdown.”

Musege is a dancehall song that was released in May. It was derived from Mudra’s hit song Muyayu. It talks about the difficult situations caused by the lockdown. It was produced by Brian Beats.

She reveals that this was even before she found out that he was a tycoon.

We met normally, he liked me and I also did so and later decide to settle together. I was attracted by so many qualities that he possesses like; Maturity, honorable, responsible, I can’t even exhaust them,” Angel Kawunda said.

R&B star, Praiz joined Seyi Shay, Obi Asika and DJ Sose as a guest judge on Sunday’s episode of Nigerian Idol.

After their joint performance of ‘One Love’ by the legendary Bob Marley, they all waited to find out which one of them had advanced to the next round of the live performances.

Atela Francis was the first of the five to make it to the top four. He sang Bob Marley’s evergreen tune, ‘Nuh Woman Nuh Cry’, which earned him praises from guest judge Praiz. He dazzled the judges with his second performance singing another classic, Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’ which earned him more praise with Praiz remarking on his exceptional versatility.

Akunna was the second contestant to enter the top 4. Her first performance was 90s chart-topper, ‘It Wasn’t Me’ by Shaggy. Seyi Shay commended her and added that she wouldn’t be surprised if the 23-year-old lawyer won the show. Her second performance was a rendition of “Fire To The Rain” by Adele. Obi Asika complimented her voice saying it was one of the strongest voices in the competition.

Comfort Alalade was also lucky enough to garner enough fan votes to get a spot in the top 4. But, her reggae performance was disappointing and all the judges gave strong criticism. However, her version of Carol King’s ‘Natural Woman’ made up for her previous performance.

In yet another tough eviction, Kingdom beat Seyi Shay’s favourite Faith Jason to earn a spot in the top 4. Although the judges were sad to see Faith Jason go, their sadness was quickly set aside when Kingdom gave a spiritual performance of Majek Fashek’s ‘Holy Ghost’. He followed his astounding performance with another show-stopping rendition of James Brown’s ‘A Man’s World’.

The second performance earned him a standing ovation from the judges. Praiz called him a star. DJ Sose, still in shock from the performance, told him the universe was his oyster and Seyi Shay added that his performance just showed Nigerians why he made it to the live shows and why he had gotten so far.

The road to the finale is shorter than ever. The Top 4 will continue to battle it out on the Nigerian Idol stage with hopes to earn the title of the Nigerian Idol.

With over 15 million Ugandan learners stuck home due to the closure of schools as a result of the second wave of Coronavirus, MultiChoice Uganda, has through Pearl Magic and Pearl Magic Prime, its local content channels revamped Learning Time, a slot dedicated to the educating of Ugandan students while in lockdown.

The lessons on Learning Time will run from 9:00 am to 11:00 am every weekday and will cover all the major subjects of the Ugandan syllabus. They will also run from 10am to 12:00 noon on weekends with the same objective.

On 6th June, 2021, government re-announced closure of all schools across the country in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19 whose second wave has led to a spike in Covid-19 cases and deaths.

“Learning Time on Pearl Magic was first launched in May 2021 during the first lockdown. It was a timely platform at a time when students were stuck at home yet some of them were faced with the unfortunate uncertainty surrounding their final exams,” said Colin Asiimwe, the Head of Marketing for MultiChoice Uganda.

“MultiChoice Uganda recognizes that our students find themselves yet again at this same crossroad this year. Which is why we have decided to revive Learning Time on Pearl Magic, to support students achieve their academic outcomes. We know the risks that come with spending a lot of time at home and we hope through these lessons our learners will be able to stay plugged in on the learning process,” Asiimwe added.

Joan Semanda Kizza, the PR and Communications Manager for MultiChoice Uganda said; “We are in the middle of a global pandemic which continues to impact negatively on different aspects of life. As MultiChoice Uganda, we understand that overcoming the challenges we face as a country requires a combined effort including continuous innovation by the private sector. Learning Time is our contribution as a business, towards facilitating education continuity.”

Learning Time is available on Pearl Magic on channel 304, and on Pearl Magic Prime on channel 148.

Uganda is one of the smaller African countries. Located in East-Central Africa, Uganda is home to over 47 million people, as estimated in 2008. Back in 2014, Uganda had a population of over 34 million. The country has several urban cities, including the capital city of Kampala, but its natural wonders are the major attractions. Tourists come to Uganda to witness the Seven Wonders, including the Rwenzori Mountains, Kibale forest, Kazinga Channels, and Mount Elgon Caldera.

When it comes to the country’s economic status, Uganda is one of the COMESA and EAC members. Thanks to numerous natural resources, fertile lands, mineral deposits, and regular rainfall, Uganda’s GDP is led by agriculture that accounts for over 70% of its GDP.

Speaking of GDP, Uganda is on the ninetieth spot with a GDP per capita of USD 916 as estimated in 2020. Besides agriculture, the Ugandan industrial sector led by manufacturing, mining, and construction is quite developed.

Gambling Laws in Uganda

Constant political instabilities have caused this African country to become one of the least developed and poorest in the world. When it comes to the country’s casino gaming industry, it is not as developed as casino industries in several other African countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. In Uganda, both online and land-based casinos can operate legally provided that they have obtained the required licenses.

The main piece of legislation concerning the casino gambling industry in Uganda is the Lotteries and Gaming Bill. Before the Lotteries and Gaming Bill, two other legislations monitored and governed the industry in the country, including the Gaming and Pool Betting Act from 1968 and the National Lotteries Act from 1967. These two were merged and the Lotteries and Gaming Bill become the main piece of legislation.

Today, numerous online casinos operate in Uganda and serve Ugandan players. Many of these are reputable sites with high-quality services and products and are also renowned, international brands that operate in many different jurisdictions, including Uganda. Back to the main piece of legislation, following the introduction of the Lotteries and Gaming Bill, a new regulatory body was also formed, the National Lotteries and Gaming Board.

Established under the main piece of legislation, the Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Body is supported by a collection of five different regulations. The main regulatory body regulates and licenses all gambling operators in the countries including the operations of sports betting houses, online casinos, and lotteries. The National Lotteries and Gaming Board is also responsible for licensing, supervising, and enforcement of all laws and regulations concerning the Ugandan gambling industry and lotteries such as the popular MTN Kaja Lottery.

Everything on paper looks great, but in reality, there are several contradicting aspects of casino gambling and sports betting. Considering quite low costs to enter this market, Uganda allows numerous casino gaming and sports betting operators to expand their operations here. Even though online casino gaming and sports betting activities in Uganda are regulated, there are still some unregulated sections.

This is also attractive for operators, so there is no wonder how the Uganda government collected massive taxes of over USD 3,1 million from the industry back in 2014.

In addition to the unregulated structure of certain industry aspects, Uganda also struggles with social issues mainly related to underage gambling. In order to gain more control over the Ugandan gambling industry, the National Lotteries Board doubled license fees to over USD 3,500.

The National Lotteries Board also prohibited gambling operators and companies from setting up gaming venues near government offices, markets, and churches. However, not much has changed since 2013, and the Uganda authorities are still looking for ways to strike a balance between the benefits of gambling or taxes and the potential social harms.

Online Casinos in Uganda

Despite these issues, renowned, international online casinos that operate in Uganda are one hundred percent reliable and trustworthy. Every iGaming operator that wants to operate in the country must obtain the required licenses. The Ugandan main regulatory body also performs various checks regarding security and privacy measures taken by these operators. As previously mentioned, numerous regulated, renowned, international iGaming operators serve Ugandan players, and these most certainly fall into
the category of safe and trustworthy online casinos.

Since the internet penetration rate in Uganda is quite low, the majority of sports bets are placed at retail sports betting sites. At the same time, online casinos are becoming more and more popular with major foreign online casino operators entering the Uganda iGaming market. So, what makes online casinos in Uganda trustworthy? They have certain things in common as following.

• They are licensed by the National Lotteries Board
• They offer RNG tested online casino games
• They employ SSL encryption data algorithms
• They offer reliable deposit and withdrawal options
• They provide safe online gaming sessions

Which Online Casinos in Uganda are Trustworthy?

Only Ugandan online casinos that are licensed and regulated by the National Lotteries Board are trustworthy, and fortunately, most online casinos operational here hold licenses issued by the main regulatory body. Trustworthy online casinos always employ the best SSL encryption technology in the form of AES 256-bit encryption. This is the most protective, military-grade technology which makes it impossible for anyone to get ahold of your personal information.

Online casinos in Uganda that deserve your attention always offer RNG tested and audited games. In other words, their gaming libraries feature one hundred percent fair games that deliver fair results at all times. Trustworthy online casinos also guarantee fair play to all registered players no matter which device they use, so mobile games, as well as those who use desktop devices and laptops, enjoy the same, high-quality treatment.

Reliable, secure, and trustworthy online casinos feature excellent banking systems with different deposit and withdrawal options. At these venues, all transactions comply with the strictest security protocols, so everyone’s funds are safe at all times. Secure withdrawals and deposits alongside reliable safety and privacy measures guarantee the most secure online gaming experiences. Trustworthy online casinos do not only employ the best security and safety measures but also offer high-quality customer care departments and generous bonuses.

Those looking for a reliable online casino operational in Uganda with generous bonuses can easily find such a facility, as shown here. Most international online casinos catering to Ugandan players offer welcome bonuses alongside free spins and ongoing promos with clear terms and conditions that everyone can understand. Lastly, trustworthy online casinos in Uganda boast impressive gaming libraries powered by eminent software providers. This means that Ugandan players have hundreds of games, including slots, table games, video poker games, and much more at their disposal.

By Our Reporter

With students stuck home due to the closure of schools as a result of the second wave of the Coronavirus, a new online learning platform dubbed Tusoma Online has been launched to enable students to keep up with their studies.

The web-based platform is connecting learners to teachers for revision online. The platform provides virtual sessions for learners at all levels from primary one to senior six.

Mr. Ivan Genza, Head of Operations at Tusoma Online, says the platform comes as a supplement to other interventions by government to provide alternative ways of learning amidst the pandemic.

“Academic stagnation can have a severe impact on children’s intellectual development, especially when newly acquired knowledge is not immediately built upon or consolidated by more advanced academic pursuits,” he noted. “With our new online platform, learners can be assured of constantly refreshing their knowledge through online revision sessions with teachers, and progressively acquiring advanced knowledge by reading ahead with the guidance of teachers in a virtual classroom.”

“Tusoma Online will help supplement the government’s efforts of teaching through radio, television and reading materials. We are also ready to work with primary and secondary schools to provide an online platform for their students, although this would require some regulatory intervention by the Ministry.” Genza added.

To access the platform, a student will be required to sign up via www.tusomaonline.com and then pay a fee of Ugx 2,900/- per class session which will last an hour.
