Stand-out matches as Euro head to knockout

By Reporter

The Euro 2020 has reached the round of 16 that begins on Saturday. Group stage has been exceptional and knock-out phase will be that much better with clashes such as England v Germany and Belgium v Portugal, all aired on StarTimes, Euro 2020 official broadcaster.

If any international game comes close to rivalling the best club derbies in the world, it must be England v Germany.

Since 1966 the two countries have been involved in a fierce rivalry. In that year England won their first – and to date – only major international trophy, when they beat Germany 4-2 in the World Cup final in Wembley.

It was the beginning of a wonderful rivalry that will see another highlight on Tuesday as Die Mannschaft travel to Wembley to take on the Three Lions in a round of the last-16 match at Euro 2020.

Germany spluttered and coughed their way into the knock-out stage, twice having to come from behind at home against Hungary to record the 2-2 draw they needed.

England, on the other hand, had their fright in their second match against Scotland, when they were held to a goalless draw. The side has yet to concede a goal, having beaten Croatia and the Czech Republic 1-0 in their two other matches.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson, who was given a first outing against the Czech Republic after recovering from injury, said that Germany’s struggles to advance meant very little.

They are still a very good side and have excellent players all over the field. It will be a hard test and in the knock-out stage, it does not matter who played better previously, only the form on the day counts.”

Germany coach Joachim Löw, promised fans a different Germany against England. “It will be a much more open game. Hungary played very defensively, we prefer playing teams that attack and England will have to attack at home.”

The game between the bitter rivals is not the only mouth-watering clash in the round of the last 16, with Sunday’s game between Belgium and Portugal in Seville rivalling the Wembley game in terms of expectations and fan appeal.

On the one hand, you have the best country in the world, Belgium, and on the other you have Cristiano Ronaldo, who seems to be using the Euros to make himself even more immortal.

His two goals against France saw him equalling Iranian Ali Daie’s international record of 109 goals. His 14 Euro goals overall, is more than anybody else has scored. He also has the highest number of Euro victories (12). He is the first player to appear in five Euros and scored in each one of them.

But whether the genius of Ronaldo will be enough to overcome the team effort of Belgium – who together with Italy and the Netherlands are the only teams to have won all three matches at the Euros -remains to be seen.

Belgian coach Roberto Martínez, has a whole host of star players in his side, like Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, has managed to mold them into a winning team.

This generation deserves some silverware and they are capable of winning it,” Martínez said.

The knockout stage begins on Saturday with Wales v Denmark and Italy v Austria. On Sunday Netherlands face the Czech Republic, while Croatia face Spain and France take on Switzerland on Monday. Tuesday’s other game sees Ukraine face Sweden.

MTN’s new technology to improve quality of service, says Ali Monzer

Ali Monzer, MTN Uganda’s Chief Technical Information
Officer.

By Our Reporter

MTN recently announced a partnership with several members of the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) which will see the telecom advance network automation using TIP’s Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway (DCSG).

We had an Interview with Ali Monzer, MTN Uganda chief technical information officer to explain what the new technology means for customers.

1. MTN recently announced rollout of a Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway (DCSG) technology, what is that?

To understand DCSG, you ought to know how telephone calls are made. Currently, we have towers across the country which house antennae. These towers emit radio frequencies in the air which are displayed on your phone as 2G, 3G and 4G. So, when making a call from Kampala to Mbarara, your phone will communicate to a tower in Kampala through the antennae which sends the session to a switch center in Kampala where it will be processed and sent to a tower in Mbarara where the phone call receiver is.

We have switches in few centralized positions in the country. The above process of making a call from one area to another is made possible through a transport network. The transport network carries phone calls, data, messages, mobile money, and digital services as well. DCSG is the transport network that moves all telecommunication traffic.

Telecommunication Transport network is very complex and expensive; involving a high capital investment for any telecommunication operator.

DCSG is an innovation in the transport network which will enable MTN run a much bigger automated end to end network at a lesser cost in a more efficient way.

We are the first in Africa to rollout this technology. It’s already in operation in Europe and North America and they are realizing the benefits. In Uganda, it will be rolled out in a phased manner.

2. Please expound on how it will be rolled out?

We are currently at the design stage of this project, but it is important to note that the deployment of this technology is a journey because MTN has 2500+ sites. However, we are going to start the roll out in selected sites. We chose this path of deployment in order to clearly ascertain the impact and benefit of the technology especially in improving the service for our customers.

3. What should customers expect when deployment of this technology comes to life?

An improved service across all aspects including voice, data, SMS and all other digital services. DCSG is going to optimise the transport network to streamline and improve our customer’s experience while using MTN services. For instance, it will allow us to optimize the latency.

Latency refers to the time it takes for a signal to travel to its destination and back. This means that if you are in Karamoja, the new technology should allow you to connect a phone call in a few milliseconds. If it takes 2 seconds to hear the ring, the DCSG technology might reduce the connection time by a certain percentage. The voice quality is also going to be enhanced. Overall, the benefits are incremental.

4. Uganda has many budding developers who are bolstered through the telecom network especially mobile money. Will this technology impact digitization in anyway?

Definitely. It will open us up to digitize more services. It will also us to be more bullish in mobile money to enrich services on the products and platforms. You know digitization boosts productivity and the economy through creating jobs and more business opportunities especially for the youth. This will not only boost MTN but also the entire economy. This technology will allow MTN expose its network assets in very efficient way to allow people to innovate.

5. Why is MTN deploying this infrastructure?

At MTN, we strive to deliver the best services to our customers. This technology promises to advance the customer experience while also streamlining our operations. This technology will also facilitate MTN to shift from a communication service provider to a digital service provider.

MTN digital services such as MTN’s Whatsapp version; Ayoba and mobile money among others require a lot of resources and a very stable and efficient transport network which we hope to achieve with DCSG.

6. In 2020, MTN launched 5G in Uganda. Will this technology deliver 5G internet speed to Uganda?

We didn’t launch 5G yet, but we did a Proof of Concept (POC) with our partners to test the service but in the long run. This is a key foundation for 5G because it is about fast speed and low latency. The most important aspect of latency is the transport network and with this technology we are going to achieve the lowest latency possible in Africa to transport data. This technology will allow us to run 5G which is predominantly for industrial use for example self-driving vehicles, tele medicine and etc.

The Perfect Openers For a Sex Chat Conversation

By Staff Writer

If you want to have a sex chat conversation, the only thing standing between you and your fantasy is asking the right person if they are interested. But often, this is easier said than done. How do you bridge the gap between “how was your day” and “will you take off your clothes and send me a picture?” Let’s talk about the best ways to ease into a sex chat conversation so that you optimize your chances of getting a “yes.”

Start Friendly

It’s vital not to dive right into the sex. Going too fast can make things awkward for both of you, and worse yet, it can give the impression that you’re desperate. So, take the time to talk about your day first. You don’t have to divulge anything super revealing or talk about your deepest secrets, but some small talk will help, especially if it’s friendly or flirty. You’ll have created a bit of a connection, and it will make the rest of the sex chat a lot less stressful. But don’t force a flirtation—that will seem contrived, too. Let the flirting happen, and if it doesn’t, just have some casual chitchat before you get to the good stuff.

Setting the Tone

The best thing you can do if you want to have a sex chat is to read the room. Is sex in the air? If so, you’re in a good place. You want to have an atmosphere of sexual tension, which is a lot of fun to be a part of but somewhat complicated to create. Flirting is subjective, and what some people like, other people hate, so tread carefully.

If you don’t know the person you want to have a sex chat with very well, you’ll have to be very in tune with their signals. If they laugh or don’t answer your questions, it’s time to shut it down and talk about something else.

The first thing to remember is that setting the tone doesn’t mean mentioning sex immediately. It merely means that you’re hinting at your interest in the other person. So, if you’re talking about work, you could mention how sexy you think your sex chat partner would look in business casual. Or ask how they like to unwind on the weekend. Anything that will elevate the conversation from pleasant to suggestive is perfect.

It’s always a good idea to keep the conversation positive. Many pick-up artist websites recommend “negging,” which is the idea that you can insult someone into dating or having a sex chat with you. This strategy is not very effective unless you’re interested in people with serious issues. When you take the conversation from subtle flirting to outright sexy, it’s essential to give honest compliments—not insults. Be enthusiastic about their physical appearance, and you are likely to receive the same courtesy. Body positivity is an important component of a fun sex chat experience. In fact, this sex chat professional talks about why body positivity is so crucial during virtual sex:

Some Lines to Get You Started

Chatting with someone you don’t know well? It can be especially intimidating to cross the line from friends to friends with benefits. Even people who have been in a relationship for years can feel tongue-tied about what to say to get started sex chatting. The important thing is that you check in with the person you’re chatting with frequently to ensure you’re on the same page before plowing forward. So, below are some ideas to get your creativity flowing.

  • I’ve been stuck on one fantasy all day, and it involves you. Want to hear about it?
  • When I picture you naked, I wonder how close my fantasy is to reality.
  • I really enjoy our text conversations, but they always make me think about sex. I’ll go into more detail if you’re into it.
  • I had a crazy dream about you, and full disclosure: we were having sex. I’d love to tell you about it if you want to hear more.
  • I can’t stop thinking about our conversation the other night, especially when I’m in the shower.
  • Sometimes I feel out of control when we’re texting, but I like it.
  • You need to see what you do to me. Ready for an explicit pic?

Finding Someone to Sex Chat With

Not everyone is into sex chat, so you might prefer to find a sex chat partner online. If you want to meet someone who loves to get as wild as you do, find a site where you feel assured that your privacy is protected.

A nurse at Bidibidi health centre III checks for a vaccine in the solar vaccine fridge donated to the health centre by MTN

By Our Reporter

“Within an average of four hours, a non-refrigerated vaccine becomes ineffective,” Amos Asiku, the facility in charge at Bidibidi health centre III in Northern Uganda says.

Incidences of vaccines getting destroyed due to lack of refrigeration were common at the health centre which has been operational since 2016.

The health centre at the time had gas powered fridges with multiple mechanical faults causing breakdowns every so often, putting the vaccines at risk of getting destroyed. In addition, refilling of the gas in the fridge was strenuous since it was done from a distant area lasting multiple days.

“It had frequent breakdowns and when it went off, the faster you acted, the better, because the fridge would no longer be regulated, the vaccines would go bad which I termed as wasted because it can no longer be used,”Asiku recounts.

In the event of a break down, Bidibidi health centre III would move all the vaccines to a nearby government hospital for refrigeration which affected operation at the health centre in addition to time wastage.

The vaccine storage challenge affected about 150 people that visit the health centre on a daily basis including women and mothers in search for polio and early immunization vaccines.

In a twist of events, the hurdles became a story of the past after MTN in partnership with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) donated a solar powered fridge which would later become the salvation to a pandemic in the refugee settlement.

“MTN gave us a solar powered vaccine fridge that is able to run for 24 hours. It makes the antigens available for patients meaning they are able to access them at any time,” he says.

Some of the vaccines housed at the hospital include polio, HPV and most recently COVID-19.

According to Asiku, the fridge has been very critical in safe keeping of the covid-19 vaccines which were received in May and have been administered in accordance with ministry of health guidelines.

“COVID-19 vaccines are also maintained on cold chain so we were able to maintain them under cold conditions to keep them safe until such a time when people wanted to take the vaccine,” he said.

As COVID-19 cases rise in the country, the health centre is a medical relief to South Sudanese refugees and most recently Congolese refugees along with the area host community.

Bidibidi is only one of 10 health centres that were in dire need of refrigerators for vaccine preservation. In partnership with UNHCR, MTN handed over 10 solar fridges worth Shs600m to Odupi Health Centre III, Imvepi Refugee Settlement, .Swinga Health Centre II, Bidibidi Refugee Settlement.

Others included; Bangatuti Health Centre III, .Idiwa Health Centre III, Palorinya Refugee Settlement, PaludaHealth Centre II, Nakivale Refugee Settlement and Rulongo health centre II among others.

Rulongo health centre II in Isingiro is the converging area for refugees from Rwanda, Congo and Burundi. Like Bidibidi, Rulongo has greatly benefitted from the fridge especially during the pandemic.

“The problem we commonly get with vaccines is storage but this fridge is on 24 hours so you immunize and vaccinate clients at any time. For example we have already vaccinated people from COVID-19,” Juliet Tuhirirwe, a midwife at Rulongo health centre II said.

Additionally, the fridges provided large space allowing for more doses of vaccines to be stored.

Speaking days after commemoration of the world refugee day, Conrad Olowo, Project Manager, MTN Foundation says MTN has over the years dedicated a lot of support to all communities including refugees in Uganda.

“We are glad to have played a critical role in strengthening the fight against COVID-19. MTN through its operations also ensures to contribute to the fight against the virus through streamlining communication and financial services through mobile money,” he said.

This was reiterated by Wendy Daphne Kasujja the assistant Reporting Officer, External Engagement, UNHCR who affirmed that MTN has supported the refugees in Uganda and host communities with a focus on the health sector.

“Through their donation of medical fridges and construction of a full maternity ward in Palorinya refugee settlement, MTN has helped in ensuring that children get immunized, and contributed to the improvement of maternal and child health. The support received is not limited to refugees
alone but includes the host communities in which they live, since refugees access the same government health facilities as the nationals,” she says.

UNHCR urged the private sector to support the refugee response in Uganda; a home to 1.5 million refugees and asylum-seekers.

Black Wall Street Emerges From Ashes in 7 Star Kampala Event

The Community of Black Wall Street which was burnt down 100 years ago emerged back from ashes in the two-day colorful event. This was not only in commemoration of the 100 years old racist capitalists’ attack on the Black Wall Street Community in North Tulsa Oklahoma where over 300 souls were killed and over 1000 businesses lost but also to mark the resurrection of the same community that will be more resilient.

The Black Wall Street (BWS) community held The Resurrection Event; Africa’s Rebirth on the 31st May and 1st June 2021 in a colorful event held at the BWS house in Kampala Uganda.

The BWS through its Economic War led by Charles N Lambert has been championing the transformation of Africa through the creation of productive jobs by supporting investments to build essential infrastructure, helping workers develop skills, and facilitating greater access to markets for citizens and businesses through economic integration.

The rebirth was held through two major events coordinated by the Trinity Platform which consists of The Black Wall Street, Redirect Mall and Development Channel. The rebirth hinges on the first-ever ideological transfer from African Americans to Africans through the adaptation of the Black Wall Street Economic philosophy of Trap and Reinvest from 100 years ago.”

It should be remembered that in 2019, in his capacity as leader of Africa’s first economic war for economic independence, Lambert prophesied that at the 100th anniversary, the Black Wall Street which was destroyed will rise again like the Phoenix but this time on African soil where it cannot be touched by Racist capitalist ever again.

The commemoration, held at the BWS House in Uganda’s Capital Kampala was hosted by Felix Omozusi and Latoya Benjamin live on the all-new Black Wall Street television.

It was watched by millions across the globe and had keynote speakers who included retired judge George Kanyeihamba among others.

Also emancipation speeches of some of the greatest black people in the world like music icon Bob Marley, Martin Luther King were played to remind black people that they can raise and be great again.

Some of the greatest black people to ever live on Earth were recognized. They included the late great Nelson Mandela.

The man behind this resurrection, Charles N. Lambert was in Tulsa Oklahoma in 2002 when he accidentally strayed to the North of the city and learnt of the horrible story of the destruction of the prosperity of a people only because they came from Africa. He swore to rebuild the community though he wasn’t sure exactly how he would do it.

Lambert is an innovator and a philosopher among other things so he created a new economic system called Compassionate Capitalism.

Charles Lambert formed this new economic system through a combination of empathy-driven innovations and the Trap and Reinvest philosophy of the ancient Black Wall Street community.

In his moving address, Mr. Lambert reemphasized his complete blueprint document for the Rebirth of Africa through the implementation of Compassionate Capitalism meaning the Resurrection of the Black Wall Street that also marks the Rebirth of Africa.

This is the very first ideological transfer from Africans in the diaspora to Africa. This is the first time that Africa is listening to black America and enacting a whole new beginning based on ideologies as African Americans not based on Europeans.

The activities to mark the commemoration will reconnect African Americans to their motherland.

The chairman of the BWS Mr Charles Lambert says this rebirth is anchored on a detailed implementation plan that includes the return of the slaves as masters over a more sophisticated and vibrant Super Power African economy that will alleviate hundreds of millions from poverty and fast track the development of rural communities

The two-day historic event also highlighted the offline Brick and Mortar rebirth of Africa through the rebirth of the new Black Wall Street Community (City), the 600 Jurisdictions and the subdivisions/ franchised business operations all designed to transform Africa into a global Super Power achieving the long-held dream of our forefathers.

Among the things lunched at the Africa Rebirth Event was a book known as New World of Compassionate Capitalism which debunks the current global capitalists’ system of the ancient European philosopher Adam Smith, two African based kinds of literature in Plays- When the Samba Broke and Wait Until Dawn which demonstrate the rich wisdom in African traditional societies, 1,000 Philosophical quotes from Charles N. Lambert which underlines the fact that the author of Africa rebirth is indeed a philosopher in a league Adam Smith would only admire.

The 7 Star event also launched a new Social Media Platform known as Economic Circle providing an ingenious way to relate social media to the economic emancipation of the African society.

Uganda Clays Limited (UCL) has announced a net profit of UGX 4.9 billion and an 11% growth in total assets for the year ended 31 December 2020.

The net profit is a turnaround from a loss of UGX 88 Million in 2019 while total assets grew from a value of UGX 62.2 Billion in 2019 to UGX 68.8 Billion in 2020.

This is despite a 3% drop in sales revenue for the year which was UGX 29.7 billion compared to UGX 30.7 billion for 2019. The drop in sales revenue was mainly attributed to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the business environment.

The financial results were announced by the UCL Chairman, Board of Directors, Martin Kasekende, during the company’s Annual General Meeting that was held virtually on Wednesday afternoon.

“Despite the strong headwinds that it unleashed, the year 2020 was also remarkable in another way because of the unprecedented results that the Company registered,” Martin Kasekende said.  “The Company made a profit after tax of UGX 4.87 billion. This was an incredible jump from a loss position of UGX 88 million in 2019.”

“The positive results were achieved through cost management initiatives put in place during the year resulting in a substantial drop in production and overhead costs.” He added.

The significant improvement in the performance of the entity resulted in a dividend pay-out of UGX 1.2 Billion (UGX 1.35 per share), which represents 25% of the net profit for the year.

“We believe this is not a one-off good performance and the company was well and truly on a trajectory of growth and profitability, and I would therefore like to congratulate Management upon delivering a remarkable performance in 2020 in spite of the challenging business environment.” Kasekende concluded.

Reuben TUMWEBAZE, UCL Managing Director, re-echoed the entity’s resilience in the tough operating environment, “The COVID-19 pandemic, whilst presenting challenges for the business and impacting the business, especially in the first half of the year, also acted as a catalyst for change, prompting us to take decisive action to protect and upgrade the business. This included a reassessment of our costs, ensuring we are fit for the future and in a strong position to capitalize on continued improvement in our markets.”

Meanwhile, during the meeting, the the Board of Directors also appointed new members to top management. These include: Mr Reuben B. Tumwebaze who was appointed Managing Director; Mr Richard Lule was appointed the Head of Human Resources and Support Services; Mr Moses Sanye was appointed the General Manager Kamonkoli; Mr Mark Rwomushana is the new Head of Sales and Marketing; and finally Mr Joseph Sendegeya was appointed the Head of Production.

Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer Idahams shone through the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 with his successful 7-track ‘Man On Fire’ EP, a collective of songs to comfort and give encouragement. In 2021, Idahams dropped the deluxe version of ‘Man On Fire’, which flaunts his ability to mix African sounds with pop; from the mid-tempo bounce of “Ada” to the Remixes of “Man on Fire” featuring Falz and “Shima” featuring Peruzzi and Seyi Shay.

Idahams calls out one of Nigeria’s most celebrated rappers on the remix of “Man On Fire”. On the single and new music video, Falz brings his signature wit and charm to the EP’s title track, fitting into the well-received anthem’s bounce and pun.

In his 2021 Deluxe ‘Man On Fire’ EP, Idahams retains the best bits of last year’s run with more star power. He updates some of 2020’s high points with more emotive highs and textured singing. Other additions in the 9-track EP include “Belle” – where Idahams’ serenades in an up-tempo afro-pop ballad and the inspirational “God When”, in which he serves us with a spiritual follow-up to 2018’s “No One Else”.

Idahams shares on the success of the deluxe EP, “I decided to add 3 songs on my 2021 deluxe EP because I felt that this year my fans should have more from the original version of the 2020 ‘Man On Fire’ EP. The response has been massive and I can see fans being creative with the songs,” adding, “This makes it my biggest project at the moment.”

Idahams’ other 2021 plans include working on an upcoming album and recording new songs which he promises to be a different sound and worth to be on the lookout for. He’s got his eyes on Tanzania’s Diamond Platinumz amongst a host of other East African artists that he would love to collaborate with. As for his legion of East African fans, Idahams shared a special message: “Never stop pursuing your dreams, keep on working hard as it will eventually pay off, focus on your craft and the sky will be your starting point.”

Idahams was signed to Universal Music and Grafton Records, after making his big break in 2018. He has since been on an impressive streak, thanks to his music and identity heavily influenced by the rich culture and local sounds of his Southern Nigerian roots: Highlife and the use of other percussion-heavy rhythms.

In a bid to help businesses in East Africa hire top talent efficiently, ROAM Jobs, the Jobs arm of Ringier One Africa Media, has announced the relaunch of BrighterMonday Uganda.

Centered on supporting growing businesses to recruit the right way, the online jobs platform will leverage technology and expertise to connect the right talent to the right opportunities, enabling organizations to enjoy an efficient and reliable recruitment process.

The online jobs platform was established in 2015, quickly establishing itself as the best job site in Uganda. In 2016, BrighterMonday Uganda’s parent company, One Africa Media was acquired by Ringier AG to form the Ringier One Africa Media (ROAM) Group, halting the business briefly before it picked up this year.

According to ROAM Jobs Managing Director Hilda Kabushenga Kragha, the business is proud to reestablish BrighterMonday Uganda and help SMEs in the region hire the right way.

“In response to the demand for quality recruitment and job placement services in Uganda, we have relaunched BrighterMonday Uganda to provide our expertise and advanced technologies at affordable costs to businesses looking to hire qualified candidates. As leaders in the industry, we have also enhanced the job application flow on the website to ensure jobseekers apply for the right roles and get noticed by recruiters.” Hilda said.

She added that Small & Medium Enterprises contribute about 20% of Uganda’s GDP and employ over 2.5 million people in Uganda and as such they require relevant solutions in onboarding the right talent.

To ensure growth and sustainability for the relaunched business, ROAM recently appointed Brian Ntambirweki as Chief Executive at BrighterMonday Uganda; he previously served as Marketing Manager at the firm in 2015.

The skilled strategist and seasoned leader has since his appointment built a strong team of 12 experts focused on delivering exceptional value to employers and jobseekers.

Commenting on his new role as CEO, Brian Ntambirweki said “I’m excited to re-join the BrighterMonday Uganda team that thrives on passion, innovation and excellence. BrighterMonday has gone a long way in its aim to digitize Human Resources and Transform Productivity in Uganda – through superior technology, operational excellence and impeccable customer care. I’m passionate about improving business efficiency, as well as improving people’s livelihoods.”

The jobs platform has kicked off business with a revised pricing strategy on products to help and support customers hire the right way. Moreover, BrighterMonday Uganda has introduced the revamped Best Match solution, an automated candidate matching system that helps employers get 10 “qualified” and “ranked” candidates in just 10 days

Airtel Uganda has announced that it will maintain its pre-paid data prices despite the new 12% Excise Duty on internet, which is taking effect starting July 1st, 2021.

The introduction of the new tax and abolition of Over The Top (OTT) follows the passing of the Excise Duty (Amendment) Bill 2021 by the Parliament of Uganda on April 29th, 2021.

“Starting today, our subscribers will not be required to pay OTT in order to access social media websites and Apps. We shall institutionalize the 12% excise tax as mandated by the Government of Uganda, however, Airtel Uganda will absorb the excise duty for all pre-paid packs, thus maintaining our pre-paid data prices till further notice,” said Amit Kapur, the Chief Commercial Officer Airtel Uganda.

“This will allow Airtel Uganda customers to enjoy and connect with the world seamlessly using our affordable and reliable 4G Smartphone network with no limitation.” He added.

With the popularity of digital lifestyle devices such as Smartphones, and an exponential growth of mobile Apps and multimedia, internet data access has gone up spurring demand for affordable and reliable data.

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic re-emphasizes the need as customers are using the internet to deliver on their daily tasks to include learning, work and entertainment.

How Haruna Damba’s disability ignited his passion for entrepreneurship

Harunah DambaBy Our Reporter

Harunah Damba lived an ordinary life until the fateful year of 2015. Falling ill for about three years, the young man slowly started to lose his hearing ability. Ear by ear, the sound disappeared. The silence was so loud. At only 22 years, Damba became deaf.

“In 2015, I suffered an illness and developed difficulty in hearing. The problem started with my left ear and later shifted to my right ear, and soon silence etched in both my ears,” he narrates.

After several failed attempts by medical doctors to treat his illness, an old lady convinced Damba’s parents to take him home. She advised that they use herbal medicine which they also later learnt was useless.

Faced with the new reality that he would be deaf, Damba did not take it so well. It was no easy feat.

“I didn’t know any bit of sign language and neither did my parents nor relatives. I used to live in seclusion because it was difficult, almost impossible for me to engage in any conversation. While in such a situation, I could see that most of my friends with similar impairment had a lot on their mind, asking questions like; would we ever get a decent living and or good employment?” he recounts.

Corridor talk from the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) fraternity illuminated him to the discrimination that would befall him in the employment market.

“I knew the future was going to be hard without any form of self-employment,” he says.

It was at that moment that Damba made the decision to become an entrepreneur.

Damba is an entrepreneur

With the help of his dad, Damba has made strides in his ambitions.

At only 27 years, in a country reeling with youth unemployment, Damba owns a garden, sugarcane plantation and a poultry house of both local and exotic birds. The young lad also leased land for a brickmaking project.

He earns enough from his businesses to meet his needs.

Damba is also a beacon of hope amongst the PWD fraternity in Bweyogerere where he is the chairperson-elect of PWDs at the parish and founder of United Persons with Disabilities (UPWDs), a disabled peoples’ organization in Bweyogerere parish.

“The organization has transformed into a social impact body tackling youth unemployment and increasing empowerment. We are still in the budding stage and using our own resources to set an example of what we really committed to. Currently, we are running two projects for the benefit of PWDs; bead making and poultry, and we are devising means of investing in mushroom growing,” he reveals.

Damba qualifies as a jack of all trades having volunteered at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) as a junior scientist before the covid-19 outbreak.

“I am thrilling at the epitome of my efforts. At the moment, I am looking at ways to expand my businesses and also integrate modern technologies,” he revels in his success.

MTN Youth skilling program

It was in his efforts to expand his business and hone skills in digital technology and youth social entrepreneurship that Damba landed on the MTN youth skilling program which he has since learnt extensively from.

“I am greatly enthralled to discover how ICT and entrepreneurship is bridging the rampant unemployment gap, and making PWDs resourceful and valuable. I commend the approach being used to train the next generation of young leaders which involves a paid training to acquire an internationally recognized International Certificate of digital literacy (ICDL) with cutting-edge modules tailored to our problems, business training, networking and mentorship,” he says.

Bearing Haruna’s hearing impairment in mind, the youth skilling program which was conducted online, ensured he was included through utilizing zoom online services which carried captions for interpretation.

“The zoom app has inclusive features like automatic captioning and a chat window. So I utilized them to always ask whenever I had not understood the concept and they were indeed mindful of the fact that the program includes people like me. We also heard google classroom and this is where most of the content was posted from class materials to reference content,” he explains.

He goes on to add; “I see this opportunity as an optimal catalyst for me to launch a career in ICT and youth social entrepreneurship to the level where I can create economic and employment opportunities for not only myself but also a wider range of individuals.”

Challenges

In spite of this success, it has not been a rosy journey for the young gentleman from Namanve. His hearing impairment has cost him friends and shone upon him a judgmental light in society.

“Most of my friends do not know sign language and many could not spare time to write while communicating to me. Many of them felt offended when I retorted because of my disability that I couldn’t hear them and that they please write down what they are saying. Also, many still have the false perception against us, the disabled. They see our disability more than our abilities. They are quick to judge what I can and can’t do because of my disability, yet I am more than what they perceive me to be,” he notes.

Shaking off the grim, Damba believes the future is bright.

He is certain that he is now an asset to drive his association; UPWDs, from a grass root level to an internationally recognized institution, having attained knowledge and skills in resource mobilization, business setup and management along with soft skills: networking, collaboration, presentation among others.

In five years, Damba envisions himself as a successful entrepreneur.
