In July 2020, out of the lockdown that saw many tailors resort to working from their houses, making face masks because very few people had money to spend on buying new clothes, a dream to promote UGANDan fashion products to the globe was brought to life! This is non other than the trillion looks store.

The life of tailors and seamsttresses In Uganda isn’t the best life any fashion designer can admire. The UGANDan fashion industry is clogged with fashion designers who have turned into mere tailors. These face competition from second hand clothes, low pay for their work, high material costs which later affect the prices of custom made products to the final consumer.

Trillion Looks Store is established to boost the UGANDAN designers and help them earn from their designs, creative and tailoring skills and give UGANDan fashion consumers an affordable african fashion alternative.

Trillion looks store is a one stop shopping center for ankara fashion styles made by Ugandans. The store runs an online shop where online buyers can order already made items of different sizes. The orders can be delivered locally with in 2- 3 days and globally up to 2 weeks.

The products are priced in ugandan shillings and highly affordable. To encourage local buyers. ‘We are pricing in UGANDan shillings and allowing buyers pay using mobile money’

International buyers can use master card, VISA and PayPal to purchase these fashion products. Trillion Looks Store’s online shop has been launched at a time when travel has been banned in many countries, there is hope that the african fashion products, with the brilliant colors can shade a light and good memories of the good old days to buyers when their products are delivered on their door step.

Hopefully, the activities of the store will improve the lifestyle of our local fashion designers and bring so many new creative designs into the fashion industry both locally and globally.

The operation model is new in Uganda, however, with the shift to the use of technology globally, there is a high probably that the store will grow in a short while.

About the Founder:

Cerinah is a graduate in Textile and Ginning Engineering and an ACCA student who found passion in selling and marketing fashion products. Her love for fashion dates back to her childhood days. Raised by her single mother who was a fashion teacher and understanding the poor work conditions her mother encountered while she perfomerd her job, Cerinah determined to build a platform that can change the fashion narrative in uganda with much focus on female fashion designers.

Cerinah has worked as business developer at milima security, volunteer with national arts and cultural Crafts association, lead a team that won the zoo hackathon competitions in 2019 and won the CFO (Chief finance officer ) award for best CFO SME CATEGORY in 2018.

Prince Martin is a fast rising singer on the block at the moment. He started his music journey five years back and is his music is currently ruling the airwaves. We spoke to him about, music, love and life.

First things first, that stage name Prince Martin! Among all names why did you choose that? Are you a real Prince?

Well. I am not a prince. I have no relations with any Kingdom leaders in Uganda but I have been a prince ever since I was born in my family. My family members have always called me a prince. That is how the name Prince Martin came about.

Tell us how and where did your music journey start from?

My music journey started all the way from high school. That is 5 years back. I was part of the school choir from S1 to S6.All the way I met some people that encouraged me to do the music and gave me the hope that one day I will be a music star. When I relocated from Uganda to the UK, I started doing my own music. I have recorded so many songs ever since. That is briefly my music journey.

When was your first  day in studio recording  your first song?

My first day in a studio was way back in 2018 around Rubaga. I recall the very first day it was just horrible for me. Holding the mic for the first time infront of music producers made me so nerveous. But as time went on, I started getting on well with everything and later mastered the art.

And what was that hit song that made your break through?

WOW. My first hit song called Pause came out last year. The song made me go so many places. People started recorganising me and I felt good.

When you heard the song  played on air for the first time, did you feel you’ve finally arrived to your ultimate dream? How was the feeling?

Hahah. Actually when my first song play on air, I breathed in and out. I told myself that yeah, this just the beginning. I need not to be excited. I controlled my excitement because when you allow excitement take over you in the beginning, you may lose it. But all in all I felt so good.

Most of your songs are in English, don’t you think you limit your non speaking English fans, like your local language back here in Kampala?

Actually not all my songs are in English. I mix all langauges. I do alittle of Kinyarwanda, Luganda and English. Everyone is really catered for. I give an example Omukururo gunsintuula. This song is in Luganda and people love it. So I mix all the languages.

Today you’re slowly climbing to the table of men musically, how are you handling the fame?

To me fame is the easiest thing to handle. I have a calm personality. I am too humble for life and I use my fame so well and accordingly. I can actually be moving on Kampala streets as I socialize with people. So with fame, I am so okay.

Who can you attribute your music success to so far?

For now, I can attribute my music success to just two people. That is Atkison, Larry Charly, Brother Mukasa Robert and the other person is John Mary. These people have pushed me to where I am now.

Who has been financing your music career?

Right now , no one is financing my music. I do all myself. I pay for all necessary expenses to bring the music out myself. It is really hard to find someone to finance one’s music before your own.

Lots of upcoming artists are just producing bubble gum music, how different is your music?

Well, everyone has what they love what to do. Personally I love talking to the soul. I do soul love music. Also I am this kind of a guy who does RnB, Raggea music and some afrobeat. So I mix something that makes me different.

What has been your weakest  point in your career so far?

My weakest point in this career is putting my music out. I kept prosticanting.

Let’s talk about life, Apart from music, what do you do in the UK?

Life in the UK is good. In the UK,my first job was I wanted to join the army. I trained and all. But later I made a U turn. I thought twice about my music career. I went to school and decided to go to studio. I work like any other person in the UK to earn a living.

Don’t you think venturing into music is  waste of time?

No, it is not a waste of time. Thought that how people think. So many youngstars have made billions in music. The most trending talent is music. One can successfully do music and earn a big living. Atleast we have living examples in Uganda.

How are you promoting your music while in the UK?

First in the UK, you can only find my music on audiomark, Spotify,Apple Music, Soundfy and other channels but in Uganda, I pay some one to move my music on radio stations and TV. Which is less costly. That is how I operate.

You can’t seperate musicians and girls, how do you handle them.  You look young , handsome and ambitious, what is your take on UG women?

Yes, I know you cant separate the two. But it is all about the mindset. I cant deny Uganda has the most beautiful girls I have ever seen. Personally I am now putting my energy on my career. But when it comes to that time for girls, we shall see.

Which Ugandan singer would give it all to have her in your bed? Would you marry a fellow musician? Or Celebrity?

I am going to be honest I like people but when it comes Lydia Jazmine and Winnie Nwagi, I like them so much. But I don’t wish to be in bed with them. I only wish I can have a collabo with them. I have respect for my fellow musicians.

Today we have many broken celebrity marriage in Uganda, the likes of Daddy Andre and Nina Roz, what is your take on this?

All I can say about this is usually it is very hard to make it in marriage when both of you are celebrities. There is always a battle for supremacy at home. That contributes to marriage break down.

Since you’ve a variety of them on your side, what qualities of a woman would sweep off you?

I want some one who is really calm. It doesn’t matter where she comes from. I want a brainy girl, respect and love.

Do you have plans of settling down  and make a family?

Oh yes. I have that dream of settling down and make a good family. If all goes well, I will do that soon.

How has internet impacted the music industry?

Really internet has done so much. Today our music fans get to know us before even we get to sing. So many online outlets are paying musicians. It is a big impact.

In a few last words, how Do you see the ug music industry in the next five years?

The Music industry has blossomed so well. Very many artists have come out and the future is bright. When we continue like this, we shall be far away.

Philip Odwera performs during the Sauti Canvas competition finale.

By Our Reporter

Disability is not inability, goes a popular adage. This was best demonstrated during the Sauti Canvas competition which came to a close on Friday as persons with disabilities took to the stage to showcase their talents.

Performing before a panel of five judges, over 20 participants with different physical and sensory impairments showcased their talents ranging from singing, to dancing, and playing instruments.

One such participant was Philip Odwera who was bound to a wheel chair because of a broken spine. Despite his disability, Odwera’s passion was palpable when it was his turn to perform. Holding the mic ignited a spark in him that made it feel like he had finally come alive. Singing an original composition, he owned the stage with a lively and vigorous showcase that had the judges swaying along. For his great performance, Philip Odwera was later crowned as one of the winners.

Other winners included Simon Namone, a pianist and singer; David Kagwe, a beatboxer; and a dance trio comprising of Nanono Hawah, Bawakana Samuel and Moses. The winners were each rewarded with Ugx 1 million.

Held under the theme “focus on abilities”, this year’s edition of the Sauti Canvas contest was aimed at transforming attitudes and norms around the participation of young people with disabilities in the music and arts culture in Uganda to be more inclusive and offer them opportunities to develop and market their talents in arts.

Speaking during a mentorship session, singer Fik Fameica advised the contestants to stay positive and encouraged them to continue working on their craft.

“No one is perfect, and no one should ever tell you that you can’t,” Fameica said. “The secret to success is knowing your strong points and focusing on building that; focus on your abilities and develop them.”

The singer further pledged to collaborate with select contestants on a music project to give a boost to their careers.

The finale was a hybrid event with a mix of both virtual and physical showcases which were held at the Voice and Beats offices in Makindye.

How MTN water ambulance is saving lives in Kiyindi

MTN water ambulance

By Our Reporter

“An expectant mother in Buvuma hoped for a normal and safe delivery just like any other woman on earth. But for women in Buvuma, it was a matter of life or death. The health centre three on the island surrounded by water can only handle ordinary deliveries. In case of C-sections, the expectant mother would need to be ferried to Kiyindi town council, where she can be operated on. But the only ferry available rides on a schedule; three times a day,” former mayor Kiyindi town council Dickson Kasujja Kabuye reminisces.

The Kiyindi-Buvuma route currently has one ferry that carries 120 passengers and 8 cars, making three trips each day between Kiyindi landing site in Buikwe district and Kirongo landing site in Buvuma district.

Essentially, there was no emergency medical relief for an expectant mother in need of operation on Buvuma Island.

It all changed in June last year when MTN donated an emergency ambulance water boat to Kiyindi.

The 15 Seater state-of-the-art water rescue vessel would be used to respond to water transport and health emergencies in Buvuma and Buikwe districts among other areas served by the Kiyindi landing site.

The modern water emergency rescue vessel made by Fisheries Training Institute, Entebbe and licensed by Ministry of Works and Transport was worth Ush 52 Million made of fibre glass, enveloped by a waterproof canopy and cushion seats.

It has a Yamaha outboard engine DT 40, anchor, 2 oars, fire extinguisher, 5 lifeguards, first aid box and patient stretcher.

According to Kabuye, the boat has been very useful in transporting patients from Buvuma to access medical services from Buikwe district.

“Almost 50 per cent of the people living in Buvuma are from Buikwe district so the boat helps us to transport them from Buvuma to the main island of Buikwe so it is very useful to us,” he says.

He goes on to narrate; “Previously, there was no way you could transport an expectant mother to Buikwe district because you had to wait for a ferry which moves in shifts. Now it is very easy to transport because this boat runs so fast.”

The boat, Kabuye says takes about 30 minutes to move from Buvuma district to Buikwe mainland in Kiyindi for medical care.

The boat was also very essential during the days of lockdown during which covid-19 patients were transported from Buvuma to Buikwe for medical health care.

“We got about 3-5 COVID-19 patients from Buvuma so it would go and pick them and finds the motor ambulance stationed in Kiyindi,” he says.

Fishermen deaths mitigated

The tales were not unique to the town council. Fishermen live to hail the ambulance which has saved lives of many on the lake.

Paul Jumba, leader of fishermen in Kiyindi mans the emergency boat along with 2 others. He narrates that on his many rides called upon by the town folk, he has saved many people from drowning.

“I have saved some people we have found drowning using our first aid kit,” he says.

But the commonest occurrence is the exhaustion of fuel in water boats on the lake.

“Since there is no petrol station on the lake, we run to the rescue of the fishermen on the lake,” he says.

Jumba also reveals that the boat has transported district officials around the islands to sensitise different members of the public on how to maintain standards of operation such as wearing masks and washing hands.

The donation of the emergency boat followed a request from the fishing community last year when MTN Uganda staff visited Kiyindi landing site to launch their annual staff voluntary program dubbed “21 days of y’ello care”.

Mr Patrick Tusiime, the regional commercial head said MTN is proud to have contributed to the safeguarding of lives around the islands only accessible through water.

“We appreciate the work accomplished by the team manning the boat. MTN prioritizes lives of the people we serve and we are glad that the boat is saving and helping many people in the region,” he also noted.

Ugandan longtime R&B pop star, Gift Ov Kaddo has opened up on his rare media appearances.

The CEO Kaddo Farm who has been off the music scene for close to 10years now says that he hates making radio and TV presenters uncomfortable with his routine calls for a hand in his music.

Sometimes am sorry for the media that I stopped showing up coz sometimes am this person who believes in myself even if there is any situation that is trying o gun me down, I can fight it and pass through. So am like maybe am disturbing these guys. I used to call presenters sometimes to ask them to play my songs and I realized that I was instead exhausting them,” stated Gift Ov Kaddo during his appearance on NBS TV.

The famous ‘Traffic man Officer’ singer also notes that he would never struggle to compete for space with the current generation of artists whom he adds that they fall below his belt.

The media betrayed me before. If you listen to a song like Driver and its still playing now and compare it to the trash of nowadays, 10-year-old Traffic man song is still hitting. I then get shocked when the media wants me to join the current ruckus,” Gift Ov Kaddo added.

Upon his music career dulling, it’s understandable that Gift Ov Kaddo embarked on the Tours and Travel business for survival.

By BigEyeUg Team

It’s a bitter twist for Team No Sleep music camp singer Yusuf Ssenabulya famously known as Roden Y Kabako as he continues in a land wrangle in Busabala, a village in Central Uganda.

Last weekend, Kabako and his wife Dumuna fisted with Busabala LC1 Chairman, Mr. Ntuyo Steven, and ideally repossessed the 40ft x 25ft piece of land that had been stolen.

Chairman Ntuyo is said to have connived with his LC1 committee and resold Kabako’s land to a one ‘Hajjati’.

However, Mr. Ntuyo has come out and revealed that the land Kabako has no proof of ownership of the piece of land that he is fighting for.

Kabako has no land in Busabala, not even a spoonful. Maybe the sand that he bought for construction. Kabako has no money to purchase a land in Busabala,” said Mr. Ntuyo Steven during an interview on Spark TV Uganda.

Mr. Ntuyo has also advised Kabako to first borrow the knowledge of owning land from fellow celebrities such as Sheebah Karungi, Full Figure, and Pastor Wilson Bugembe whom he says already possess plots in the same locality.

He is not even the first celebrity to buy land in Busabala. Let him first consult Sheebah Karungi, she is a good woman, she has bought land here in Busabala and its good that am the one who endorsed on her land agreement. Another one is Full Figure, whom I was also part of the agreement, she’s even building her own house. Pastor Wilson Bugembe too is also part of this community. The Late Mowzey Radio, he also had land here though his documentation got lost. His family came recently and pleaded for my assistance,” Mr. Ntuyo added.

Apparently, Kabako is yet to parade any documented proof of owning the piece of land.

We will keep you posted

By ReporterStarTimes Marketing Director Isma Lule recently, addressing media at the launch of Euro 2020 at their company HQ in Kampala.

UEFA Euro 2020 started on 11th June and it has already delivered great action. The best thing is that it will get better and better until 11th July. This will not only happen because of the many exciting games that we are looking forward too, but also the great prizes that StarTimes has lined up for you in the Euro 2020 promotion that was launched two weeks ago. Remember, we all have a chance win.

New subscribers can buy a decoder and existing customers pay monthly subscription for Basic, Classic, Smart or Super and enter the draw automatically to win UGX 10m Cash, boda boda, LED TV, smart phones and many more exciting prizes.  Our first draw will be held on 19th June 2021 at 9 pm on Sanyuka TV before the game of Spain and Poland.

This weekend will be packed with exciting fixtures as match day 2 ends on Saturday and match day 3 begins on Sunday.

That means a total of eight matches from Friday to Sunday, all broadcast live and in HD on the StarTimes World Football channel as well as on streaming app StarTimes ON.

Friday

Group D will see England face Scotland in Wembley Stadium at 10 pm. England and Scotland have the oldest rivalry in football history. Favorites of the tournament, England are on a high after an impressive victory over Croatia but a defeat against their neighbors would rob them of much of the momentum they are looking to build. The loss against Czech Republic 2-0 leaves Scotland likely needing a win here to escape the group stages.

Also in Group D, Croatia will battle against Czech Republic at 7 pm, while in Group E Sweden vs Slovakia will take place at 4 pm.

Saturday

On Saturday, the Group of Death, Group F, will provide an exciting match with Portugal facing Germany at 7 pm on ST World Football.

Portugal beat Hungary 3-0 in their opening game, with Raphael Guerreiro opening the scoring before Ronaldo scored twice to take his European Championship haul to an all-time record of 11 goals. Germany lost their opening game against world champions France 1-0 but with nine players having won the UEFA Champions League over the last nine months (Neuer, Müller, Gnabry, Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, and Niklas Süle with Bayern; Havertz, Werner and Antonio Rüdiger, with Chelsea), they remain a serious threat for Portugal.

On the same day, France will try to take the Group F lead against Hungary at 4 pm while the Spain vs Poland match will kick off at 10 pm.

Sunday

Italy became the first side to book their place in the last 16 of Euro 2020 after a 3-0 win against Switzerland. Wales took a significant step towards qualifying for the knock-out stages after prevailing 2-0 against Turkey. They will seek a win against Italy to secure the second qualifying spot in Group A, after drawing 1-1 with the Swiss in their opening game. Italy and Wales will clash on Sunday 7 pm and Switzerland will take on Turkey at 10 pm.

Football fans also have a chance to win lots of prizes too when they download our StarTimes ON app and predict winners on each level. The more levels you predict, the more points you earn and the closer you are to the grand prediction prize for Euro 2020.

Remember all the Euro 2020 games are live and in HD on StarTimes ON app with commentary in English, Luo, Luganda, Runyankole, Runyoro and Swahili.

National Medical Stores receives 175,200 COVID-19 Vaccines

National Medical Stores (NMS) has today received 175,200 COVID-19 vaccines from the Ministry of Health. The AstraZeneca vaccines will be stored at the NMS headquarters in Entebbe. NMS’ mandate is to procure, store and deliver drugs mainly to public health facilities. The Minister of Health Dr Ruth Aceng received the vaccines from the donors – the French government represented by Ambassador Jules-Armand before handing over the consignment to NMS at the NMS HeadQuarters.

The vaccines were delivered by a KLM flight which landed at Entebbe International Airport at 10:00pm.

This is the third consignment of COVID-19 vaccines to be received, stored and distributed by the NMS since March 2021.

NMS General Manager Moses Kamabare said:

Last night, NMS received 175,200 COVID-19 vaccines. These are part of the COVAX facility vaccines that came into the country at 10pm.”

“We have already brought these vaccines from the airport to NMS – our central vaccines store.”

Transportation and delivery of vaccines will commence immediately after NMS has received the distribution list from the Health Ministry.

That’s when we will know how many vaccines, how many doses to which place. As soon as we receive that distribution list, NMS will be starting the distribution immediately tomorrow morning to all parts of the country that Ministry of Health will have directed us to deliver to.”

The COVAX Facility is the global pooled procurement mechanism for COVID-19 vaccines through which COVAX will ensure fair and equitable access to vaccines for all 190 participating economies, using an allocation framework formulated by WHO

The vaccines come at a time the country is grappling with a surging number of COVID-19 cases. The Ministry of Health is reporting a daily average of 1,000 COVID-19 cases.

The new doses bring to 1,139,200, the total number of COVID-19 doses received by Uganda since March 2021.

NMS has a modern 7,200sqm warehouse at Entebbe (present location) which is used for the orderly receipt, storage and packing of medical supplies destined to GOU Health facilities.

French Ambassador to Uganda, Jules-Armand Aniambossou, hailed the good relations between Kampala and Paris.

I am very glad to be part of this ceremony. This country did well in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the situation currently is difficult,” he said.

It’s our common responsibility to tackle this issue,” he added.

Minister Aceng thanked the donors for the goodwill gesture. She said the donation was timely considering the country is struggling to cope with the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

I thank the French for organizing and giving 175,200 vaccines. I also thank COVAX for their commitment to ensure African countries including Uganda have access to vaccines. I thank WHO and UNICEF for ensuring the vaccines arrived safely. Once we receive the vaccines, the work is just beginning. I want to thank NMS for receiving the vaccines in the middle of the night and taking care of it very well. Ensure vaccines reach the last person by delivering it to districts,” she said.

She said out of the 964,000 does vaccines received by Uganda, 869,915 people have been vaccinated.

Dr Aceng said “every dose was utilized effectively. We have not heard any expiries.”

She emphasised that the arrival of vaccines was very timely since “we have already exhausted what we have. Everybody is looking forward to getting vaccinated.”

Aceng revealed that Uganda is expecting an extra 688,000 doses “very soon.”

She said COVID-19 continued to ravage the entire country.

“The number of admissions and death is so high,” said Aceng.

In other words we are in state where we need all hands to address the pandemic. How did we get here? Ugandans were not listening. No amount of oxygen, no amount of vaccines or increase in ICU beds will get us out of this situation. The best vaccines is ourselves. We need to be responsible and follow COVID-19 prevention SOPS.” Aceng advised Ugandans to strictly observe the COVID-119 prevention measures such as cleaning your hands often with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub; maintaining a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing; wearing a mask when physical distancing is not possible; avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth and staying home if you feel unwell.

Barbara Nel, Africa Region Country President, AstraZeneca, said:

On behalf of AstraZeneca, I would like to thank Dr. Aceng, our partners at the COVAX coalition, the World Health Organization, Gavi, CEPI and UNICEF for making this possible. Our vaccine accounts for 94.61% of COVAX supply to date, with more than 76.7 million doses delivered to 127 participating countries, including more than 38 African countries.

All partners in the vaccine alliance are working round the clock to ensure that as many COVID-19 vaccines can get to African nations as soon as possible. Today’s arrival in Kampala demonstrates the value of governments, industry and others working together to address our continent’s urgent need.”
