Brian Avie Takes Music Break

By BigEyeUg Team

Ugandan singer Brian Avie has announced that he is taking a break from releasing new music, citing political tensions and financial instability as major challenges for the industry in 2025.

In a statement, Brian Avie expressed concern over the current state of the music industry, explaining that many artists are struggling due to economic hardships and the growing focus on politics ahead of the election period.

I will postpone releasing music until further notice. Artists may not agree with this, but this year is not fruitful musically. That’s why most songs have not performed well since January. There is too much political tension and a financial crisis, making it a big risk to invest in music right now. This is definitely a year of politics,” he stated.

The singer also acknowledged artists who have managed to hold successful concerts before the political campaigns intensify.

He particularly noted veteran musician Bebe Cool, whom he praised for having a well-planned budget that allows him to remain active in the industry despite the challenges.

Those who have succeeded with concerts—congratulations! It was a smart move before the campaigns start. Artists like Bebe Cool can do more musically because he planned for this since last year and has a strong budget to support him. Even if one wishes to stay relevant, there is a high chance of making losses,” he added.

Brian Avie’s decision reflects growing concerns among musicians about the impact of political activities on entertainment.

Many artists are expected to adjust their strategies as the election period approaches.

Bebe Cool Threatens Legal Action Against Alex Muhangi Over Unauthorized Content Use

Bebe Cool has issued a legal warning to Comedy Store Uganda proprietor Alex Muhangi over the unauthorized use of his performances for commercial gain.

Through his lawyer, Timothy Sentongo of RSK Associates, Bebe Cool has expressed his intention to sue Muhangi for allegedly broadcasting and distributing his content without consent.

According to a legal notice sent to Muhangi, Bebe Cool accuses him of affixing, distributing, and broadcasting his performances on various media platforms between October 2017 and November 2024.

The letter, which was also copied to the Uganda Registration Service Bureau’s Directorate of Intellectual Property, Uganda Communications Commission, and Uganda Performing Rights Society, states that Muhangi has no legitimate right to use Bebe Cool’s performances for commercial purposes.

It is alleged that Muhangi has been publishing the musician’s performances on his YouTube channel and airing them on NTV Uganda without proper authorization. The letter argues that these actions amount to unjust enrichment, severe economic harm, and infringement of Bebe Cool’s performance rights.

In response, Bebe Cool’s legal team has issued several demands:

  • Muhangi must immediately cease broadcasting and distributing the musician’s performances.
  • All infringing content must be removed from his media platforms.
  • A full account of revenues generated from the unauthorized use of Bebe Cool’s performances must be provided.
  • Muhangi must compensate Bebe Cool with UGX 579,698,550 for damages.

The letter gives Muhangi a 14-day ultimatum to comply with these demands. Failure to do so, Sentongo warns, will result in both civil and criminal proceedings.

Pallaso Defends Attack on Alien Skin’s Base, Citing Loss of Faith in Legal System

Pallaso has justified his attack on fellow artist Alien Skin’s residence, stating that he was forced to take matters into his own hands after losing faith in the legal system.

The incident, which took place in January at Alien Skin’s Fangone Forest base in Makindye, was Pallaso’s response to what he claims were repeated assaults by Alien Skin’s gang.

Speaking about his actions, Pallaso cited the case of his friend Eva, who he says was severely injured at her workplace due to an attack by the same group. Despite her efforts to seek justice, she faced numerous legal hurdles and was ultimately abandoned by the system.

“I saw what they did to my friend Eva. She was injured at work. After she was beaten, she tried hard to get justice. She went through all kinds of legal hoops but kept being let down. Even the lawyer she got eventually gave up and told her to leave matters in the hands of God,” Pallaso explained.

Seeing Eva’s struggle made Pallaso question who the next victim would be. “I asked myself, when they are done with me, who is next? Is it my father?” he said, adding that he was determined not to suffer the same fate.

Pallaso expressed frustration that Eva had turned to people in power, only to realize they were “too weak” to stand up to Alien Skin and his gang. This, he said, left him with no choice but to act on his own.

“I decided to take action to pass a message because I had seen someone who tried to seek justice through the proper legal channels and only ended up losing her money. I did not want to be victimized like her,” he stated.

His decision to confront Alien Skin and his group, he claims, was not just about personal revenge but a stand against violence and impunity.

Pallaso hopes that his actions have served as a deterrent. “I decided to take action and make sure that their violence stops with me, and I hope that they have changed,” he concluded.

President Museveni Approves Copyright Management System to Protect Ugandan Musicians

President Yoweri Museveni has given the green light to a new Copyright Management System, aimed at safeguarding musicians’ rights and ensuring they receive fair compensation for their work.

Following a meeting with key officials and musicians, including Eddy Kenzo, the president of the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), President Museveni emphasized the importance of tracking music plays.

The system, developed by State House scientists under Eng. Sheba Kyobutungi, will register musicians’ works, track music usage in bars and media houses (TVs and radios), and prevent piracy.

Businesses that play Ugandan music; such as bars, radio stations, and TV stations—will be required to install a licensed device to monitor and report song plays. This will ensure that musicians earn a fair share of revenue.

For example:

  • If a bar pays UGX 1M for a music license, artists will receive payments based on play counts.
  • A song played 60 times will receive 60% of the fee.

The Ugandan government has outlined strict enforcement measures:

  • Bars must install monitoring devices to track music plays.
  • The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) will oversee compliance.
  • The Uganda Police will enforce the law.
  • Businesses that fail to comply risk closure.

He went on to narrate how he lived with a security guard, and later crossing paths with a one Mohammed, who had a studio, and let him record after just hearing him freestyle.

“Someone told me that there is a man who has a private studio, so I knocked and he welcomed me, he asked me what i wanted to do for a living, I told him I sing. A few months later, Bebe survived another scare, when he managed to make it out alive after bombs went off at Kyadondo Rugby club, where he had performed at a World Cup viewing party.
