Ugandan Afrobeat music star Martha Mukisa is back with a brand-new hit record – “Ettama” – a groovy and Afro-fusion track out now.

Written by Nick Mulla alongside Moze Writer and Tamugi and produced by Oppe; “Ettama” is a groovy and easy listen with addictive percussion influences adding onto a rich musical experience.

She took some time to reflect on “Ettama” saying, “This song came to me at a time when I needed to voice these thoughts. It’s like therapy, if you let it sink in.”

“Ettama” which is a Luganda word to mean “Cheek”, its lyrics and melodies ring a bell for many. Insecurity shows up in different forms like when you find someone to show deep affection for.

The new single takes on such moments when you develop feelings for someone or experience love but still remain cautious – safeguarding your heart.

“Ettama” follows the success of “Ndozaako”, one of her body of work released in the second quarter of 2023.

Martha Mukisa continues to rule charts in 2023 with fan favorites hits like “Ndozaako”, “Akawoowo (Perfume)”, “Tondeka Kemebwa”, and “Vibe Yo” Remix Feay Ziza Bafana.

These releases have cumulatively surpassed millions views on YouTube – only within a space of 10 months.

UK-based Ugandan promoter Jose Links denies link to MK Movement

Renowned UK-based Uganda events promoter Joseph Kiggundu, known as JOSE JOBS LINK, has strongly denied any involvement with a fake document that circulated on social media. This document wrongly linked his company, “JobsLink UK,” to the MK Movement.
The fake document had many mistakes about his company’s name.

The fake document claimed that JobsLink was trying to secure the rights to host General Muhoozi and his team in the UK, implying a connection to the MK Movement. However, JobsLink has made it clear that he has nothing to do with this document. He believes it was created to damage his reputation and his relationship with the public, as well as his friendship with Robert Kyagulanyi, the NUP principal.

It’s worth noting that this fake document appeared shortly after JobsLink organized a major birthday celebration at Bobi Wine’s One Love Beach in Busaabala. During this event, he announced his retirement from event organizing, effective 2nd of December, after the MESACH @ 46 CONCERT at the Royal Regency in the UK. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense for the fake document to suggest that JobsLink is seeking to host MK Movement events in the UK, considering his upcoming retirement.

JobsLink has urged the public to disregard the fake document and treat it with the disdain it deserves. He believes that the creators of the document are simply trying to undermine his reputation.

A joint planning meeting between the government and the private sector was held yesterday at the Directorate of Ethics and Integrity ahead of the 8th edition of the Nyege Nyege festival that is happening from 9th to 12th November in Jinja City.

By Our Reporter

A joint planning meeting between the government and the private sector was held yesterday at the Directorate of Ethics and Integrity ahead of the 8th edition of the Nyege Nyege festival that is happening from 9th to 12th November in Jinja City.

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity – Hon. Rose Lilly Akello – and attended by representatives from Uganda Breweries Limited – the festival’s main sponsor, Nyege Nyege, Talent Africa, Busoga Kingdom, Uganda Police, the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance and others.

According to a source in attendance, the stakeholders conducted a review of last year’s festival – covering areas such as security and ethical concerns – before discussing plans to improve this year’s edition of the festival, which is going to be held on almost 50 acres of land covering the Source of the Nile; Jinja Showgrounds; Jinja Golf Course and; Source Gardens in Jinja City.

The source added that the stakeholders formed a “National Organizing Committee” for the festival – which will have its first meeting next week to co-organise, amplify and increase the scale of the festival’s already existing positive socio-economic impact on Ugandans.

Nyege Nyege attracts thousands of Ugandans and non-Ugandans to the shores of the River Nile every year – marketing the country as a party and hospitality destination while exposing tourists to many of the other travel destinations available in the country.

According to the organisers, in 2019, the festival attracted approximately 13,000 attendees – with 4,000 coming from outside Uganda and in 2022, approximately 15,000 people attended the festival – with 10,000 Ugandans, 3,000 Kenyans and 2,000 international guests.

In addition to the fees paid to the government and the city in fees, permits and taxes, the festival directly benefits hundreds of hotels, bed and breakfasts and camps within Jinja and its vicinities as well as the locals who are employed either directly or indirectly as parking attendants, accredited guides, transporters (Boda Bodas and car hire), those supplying both raw and cooked food and so on.

Azawi performs at her Sankofa concert held at Serena Hotel.

By Our Reporter

Friday night was one to remember for all the Azawi fans that attended her Sankofa show at the Kampala Serena Hotel. The event was a true definition of collaboration and creativity with Azawi, Guinness and Swangz Avenue partnering to bring the show to life.

The evening was intimate and cozy, opening with a captivating performance by Zafaran, Swangz Avenue’s latest signing. Her singles “Matala” and “Sweetheart” set the perfect mood, warming up the eager crowd for what was about to unfold.

Shortly after Zafaran’s performance, the star of the night, Azawi, graced the stage with her live performance, commencing with the electrifying “Champion,” the first track off her recently released “Sankofa” album. This song served as a fitting introduction, speaking to Azawi’s true essence of an African champion and easing the audience into the heartfelt journey that the Sankofa album offered.

Following “Champion,” Azawi continued to enthrall the audience with hits like Tuliwabweru, Lofit, 10 Over 10, Omwenge, Fwa Fwa, Slow Dancing, Quinamino, and Repeat It. She seamlessly blended her old and new songs, taking revelers on a melodic journey through the music that has defined Azawi and the artiste she is today.

“I wanted Sankofa to be different. Every song on this album is a story about my life experiences. I have been the most vulnerable to my fans on this album,” Azawi said.

Among the evening’s standout moments was Azawi’s unexpected collaboration with rapper Keko, which took the audience by surprise. The crowd was also serenaded by the soulful Elijah Kitaka, leaving a lasting impression.

Sankofa concert

However, the climax of the night arrived when Azawi invited Fik Fameica to join her on stage, and together, they performed their anthem “Majje,” a song that emerged from a collaborative effort between Azawi, Fik Fameica, and Guinness as part of the “Black Shines Brightest Campaign.” At this point, there was no sitting down; the audience was on their feet, dancing, and singing along.

The event ended on a high note, with Azawi performing “Summer Bae”, her collaboration with Konshens, leaving the audience still yearning for more.

Uganda Breweries to expand its Farm for Success program to 50,000 farmers

Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), has announced that it will expand its Farm for Success, previously Local Raw Material, program from the current 35,000 farmers to 50,000 farmers

By Our Reporter

Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), has announced that it will expand its Farm for Success, previously Local Raw Material, program from the current 35,000 farmers to 50,000 farmers as the company seeks to sustainably source 100% of agriculture materials used in producing its various brands from Uganda, specifically from farmers of Barley, Sorghum, and corn by 2030. This was during the annual farmers symposium that Uganda breweries created as a platform to create mutual understanding, collaboration, policy alignment, problem-solving, and ultimately, fostering economic growth and development among the various stakeholders in the agriculture value chain.

The Local Raw Material program started in 1987 with Barley farming but the program kicked off in earnest in 2003 when the Government of Uganda introduced excise concessions for beer produced from locally resourced raw materials to facilitate the choice and use of local raw materials in the alcohol production process. UBL was then able to make several investments to accommodate increased local raw materials, for example, a $21.3 million Mash Filter investment in 2011. That same year, payments to farmers peaked at over 14 billion, jumped to 26 billion in 2017, and currently stands at over UGX 52 billion as of 2022. Increasing the number of farmers to over 50,000 will see Uganda Breweries increase farmer payouts to over 80 billion in the next 5 years.

Speaking at the 2nd annual Farmers Symposium that ran under the theme Innovations in Agro technology, seed and other Agro input, Mr. Andrew Kilonzo, the Managing Director of UBL stressed that as part of the company’s efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in their processes, they will be looking to onboard more women and people with disabilities as part of this program, adding that the goal will be to source over 60% of the agricultural produce from women farmers as well as people with disabilities.

“We do this, not just to meet a quarter, but part of sourcing sustainably means that people who have not been a part of this value chain are brought to the table, and are supported in the best farming practices not only so that they can supply us the grain that we need, but that they can earn a livelihood, be self-sufficient and hopefully, pay it forward to the other previously marginalized communities. For that reason, we shall have targeted capacity training sessions with women groups across the country as part of onboarding for this process.” Mr. Andrew Kilonzo stated.

Under Uganda Breweries’ Society 2030 program, the goal is to provide 100% of local sourcing communities with agricultural skills and resources, building economic and environmental resilience and supporting 150,000 smallholder farmers.

The State Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Fred Bwino Kyakulaga while officiating the Farmers Symposium said that programs like UBL’s Farm for Success are in line with several government objectives as outlined in the National Development Plan (NDP) III in the areas of agro industrialization, import substitution/promotion of local manufacturing as well as the mandate of government to improve policy and infrastructure that strengthens the private sector to create jobs for inclusive growth, employment, and sustainable wealth creation.

The UBL’s Farm for Success program also initiated strategic partnerships with government agencies like the National Agriculture Research Organisation (NARO), to boost and promote Research, improve seed quality and disease control, and improve soil quality for purposes of advancing agricultural productivity. The other was Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), also a 5-year partnership focusing on areas such as; the exchange of experience and capacity building of selected farmers in the use of agriculture technologies and increase production of the 3 strategic crops – Barley, Sorghum and Cassava, as well as to support Training Farmers, Research, Expand market for farmers’ produce.

Uganda Breweries currently works with over 35,000 farmers from all over the country to purchase over 8,000 Tonnes of Barley, 15,000 Tonnes of Sorghum, 18,000 Tonnes of Maize, and 1,000 Tonnes of Cassava; 30% of that from Northern Uganda, 25% from Eastern Uganda, 35% from Western Uganda and 10% from Central Region.

The End of Alien Skin: It’s a Slippery Slope Onwards

$
0
0

Recently, musician Alien Skin hinted that he will be quitting music in December and will be starting a political party. The political party will be known as ‘Fangone Unity Platform’ aka FUP. FUP picks from the National Unity Platform (NUP) whose current president is Bobi Wine aka Kyagulanyi Ssentamu. Alien Skin’s statements also come at a time when he’s at logger heads with Bobi Wine and his fans. Although Bobi Wine has not categorically declared any issue with Alien Skin, the NUP and People Power online supporters have been incessant in their attacks against Alien Skin. Alien Skin has also chosen to comment that he doesn’t need any support or forgiveness from Bobi Wine. That he’s content in himself.

Recently also, Alien Skin also showed a video of his FUP army and confirmed that two flag posts would soon go up, one for Uganda and another for FUP. But what stood out was the fact that Champion Gudo at the end of the video did brandish a sharp knife, something that hints about the next steps of Fangone. And that is where we think the slippery slope has started and it shall not end well.

BigEye.ug has always been at the centre of predicting future events. Although the knife could seem an innocent or even useless detail, we believe it’s very defining of what the end of FUP and Alien Skin will be. From now on, it looks like FUP is going to become a popular mobilization platform for ghetto youths. But also, it’s going to be a platform that gives them the ability to be unruly, or at least achieve some semblance of power in the ghettos and in the areas where they will pass. This in a way will also give them an equal footing to the members of NUP and People Power.

https://x.com/AlienSkinUg/status/1716143663552610440?s=20

In the end, we are likely to see a dialectical playout on the ground. It will be FUP versus NUP and this will form the new battle lines. So strong will these battle lines be, they are likely to devolve into the worst of violence. It could get to the point where one can’t stay on the fences in the ghetto, it could get to that point where one must pick a side. For now, it also seems like FUP wants to take over all the areas of Makindye, Salaama, Katwe and the ghettos of those areas. This will leave NUP commanding the areas of Kamwokya, Kawempe and other areas. It will soon become a crime for a member of NUP for example to step into FUP territory. This looks like something that has been well-scripted.

But we also see a danger in it as it could cost lives. We can’t tell the full script to this, but we can comfortably tell the ending won’t be desirable. And such times should make people to be more alert. The end is nigh for Alien Skin, it’s a slippery slope. Only that it doesn’t end well, and it will take many people with it! We pray our predictions are wrong.

Two of the music industry’s most dynamic and talented artists, Navio and Tyra Chantey, have joined forces to deliver a captivating and soul-stirring musical. This dynamic collaboration brings together Navio’s lyrical genius and Tyra Chantey’s captivating vocals, resulting in a song that promises to make waves in the music world.

Apart from Hamadi, the next most talked about collaboration off the “Vibes Out The East” album from Navio has been “Water”. Even though it has been a feature on the Album released in August 2022, the Navcorp team had been adamant about waiting until now to release it.

Navio has always been at the center of predicting the African voices of the future. From his mention of Tiwa, Burna, Sauti and many other acts on the continent at the start of their career, he hasn’t been wrong yet.

His most notable claim has now come in the forming of backing Tyra Chantey. A Ugandan born Swede who lives between 3 continents and uses that to make her music more colourful and impactful that you could possibly imagine.

He has already dubbed her the voice of the future and as we await her much anticipated debut project, this year is about to be shut down with “Water”. This is their first of hopefully many collaborations as the entire process seems like an effortless blend of brands and more.

Arguably the most sought after name in Production- Nessim, came in to elevate the instrumentation to another level. The video itself was shot in Atlanta by Sasha Vybz and entirely lives up to the hype.

“Water” is a melodious blend of hip-hop and R&B, creating a unique and fresh sound that is bound to resonate with a wide range of music lovers. The track explores themes of love, desire, and the ebb and flow of emotions, all set against a backdrop of mesmerizing melodies and rhythm.

Navio, a household name in the hip-hop scene, is known for his insightful and thought-provoking lyrics. With a career spanning over a decade, he has consistently pushed the boundaries of the genre and continues to be a driving force in East African music. Tyra Chantey, on the other hand, is a rising star with a voice that can enchant and captivate any audience. Her vocal prowess adds an unforgettable dimension to “Water.”

The lyrics of “Water” tell a compelling story, showcasing the depth of emotions that can arise in the quest for love. The artists delve into the idea that, much like water, love can be both calming and tumultuous. The song’s evocative lyrics and infectious melody will undoubtedly leave listeners contemplating their own journeys through love and life.

Navio and Tyra Chantey’s chemistry in “Water” is nothing short of magical. Their musical synergy is evident in every note, creating an entrancing and unforgettable experience for the listener. The track is not just a song; it’s a journey through the emotions and complexities of the human heart.

Tony Elumelu’s Journey in Leadership and Mentorship

People often ask me, TOE how do I learn leadership. Should I go on a course? Buy a book? Get a mentor? Are leaders born, or can you become a leader?

Just as I say about business success, leadership has many components – luck, being in the right place at the right time. But I also believe that those talents and those disciplines that you bring, creating a vision and the resilience and focus that delivers that vision, can also forge your own personal leadership.

I was fortunate to work with Chief Ebitimi Banigo, at the start of my career. My leadership philosophy was built working with him. It started with Chief Banigo taking the time to read my application letter and giving me a chance to prove myselfat Allstates Trust Bank in 1988. When my colleagues tell me today, “TOE you respond too fast to our emails”, I laugh because I learnt from the master himself – Chief Banigo. When I sent memos to him, he would respond within twenty-four hours; therefore, why should I not respond even faster in this age of technology?

These are some of the leadership values I learnt from my time with Chief Banigo, and I practise them all today.

Leaders must demand excellence: Only by going the extra mile and pushing ourselves, will we truly develop and standout. Hard work and excellence made my bosses Toyin Akin-Johnson and Ebitimi Banigo notice, and subsequently, believe in me. At twenty-seven, I went from being a trainee to being a boss, when I was appointed a branch manager – the youngest bank branch manager at that time. All the things I learned earlier came into play, and I continued learning.

Good leaders find in people, what people did not know they possess – Leaders recognise the talent in their team andthen push to unlock the talent. When I work, I work to achieve my goals, but I also work to unlock my teams’ skills. I know everyone I work with has huge potential – for me my success is also about the success of others, growing and nurturing their talent, that is the foundation of our growth at Heirs Holdings Group. This focus on talent, teams, personal transformation, is why I am so insistent on creating institutions, cultures, and pathways, where human capital can thrive. It is why I am an investor in businesses, but alsoentrepreneurs across Africa.

Leaders must walk their talk – A leader must be consistent.People want to trust a leader that they believe has integrity.Leadership is not just about telling people what to do, it’s also about setting an example. A good leader must lead by example and practice what they preach, this demonstrates integrity, it builds trust and respect.

Leaders must impart knowledge: I benefitted from the mentorship of Chief Banigo at Allstates Trust Bank. Hehelped me to develop my strategic thinking, my frames of reference and to channel my ideas into concrete actions, so that when the moment of opportunity arrived, at the age of thirty-four, I had the self-belief to gather a small group together to take over and revive a failing bank – take that enormous step, that is still shaping an industry and a continent today.

Today, when I am faced with an impossible situation, I ask myself, ‘What Would Chief Banigo Do?’. I worked with Chief Banigo from 1988 – 1995, till this day, he is the one I turn to,when I need advice.
