Charles MbireBy Jackson Oboth

As the world moves towards the adaptation of FinTech to facilitate development in all sectors, shrewd investors are now turning their focus to financial institutions as their investment choices.

This was evidenced in Wednesday’s trading at the Uganda Stock Market where Telecommunications Mogul Charles Mbire acquired a huge stake into Bank of Baroda through a single purchase of 23,529,400 shares worth billions of shillings.

Mbire known for his discernful investment traits now adds banking to his long list of investments which include Telecommunications (MTN) which is currently trading on the Uganda Securities Exchange where he boasts of a 4 percent share value worth over 55 million dollars. His other investments include Logistics  (FF), Revenue Assurance- Invesco , Oil  services- (INVESCO Tech, Real Estate and oil exploration.

Officials at Uganda Securities Exchange are upbeat about the trading activities on the Stock Market. One of them who spoke on condition of anonymity had this to say;

“The world is moving towards the use of Fintech to enhance development in all sectors. To a man like Mbire, the acquisition of such a substantial stake in Bank of Baroda can only be done after a careful evaluation of the global business trends. With that kind of shares, Mbire is probably the biggest individual shareholder at the bank of Baroda.”

Bank of Baroda Uganda, initially wholly owned by Bank of India is one of the most robust banks in Uganda, ranked by the World Bank as one of the top 1000 banks in the world.

Faridah NakazibweBy Our Reporter

NTV ‘Akawungeezi’ news reader and ‘Mwasuze Mutya’ presenter, Faridah Nakazibwe sparked quite a buzz with her first ever twitter spaces on “Bonds for a Lifetime” on Wednesday evening.

The Space was as a result of reactions to one of her tweets mentioning how quick it is these days to lose relationships and why bonds no longer last.

The conversations were centred around the complexities around romantic and platonic bonds and relationships. Guests on the space poured out their hearts as they discussed very personal experiences about the difficulties of maintaining relationships.

Due to the surprisingly large volume of people who wanted to contribute to the space, Faridah decided to host a physical dialogue about bonds on Thursday at 3pm. In the queue of contributors happened to have the Hima Cement account, a well know cement manufacturer which led to the brand sponsoring her dialogue.

Faridah has shown that influencers and public figures have to be more vocal and vulnerable about relatable topics of interest and they too might get a chance to fruitful opportunities.

Social media is still dazzling with names of Ugandan singers Desire Luzinda and Levixone.

How to properly raft up with other boats

$
0

By Staff Writer

There are a variety of reasons why people might want to raft up with other boats. For one, it can be a fun and social way to spend time on the water. It can also be a great way to meet new people and make new friends. Additionally, rafting up can provide added safety in the event of an emergency.

But make sure that rafting up with other boats is not making your boat’s environment messy. In this situation, you should consider having a boat trash can that will hold waste things so that you can keep your boat environment clean and tidy.

By grouping together, boats can create a larger barrier against wind and waves, making it more difficult for them to capsize. Finally, rafting up can be a great way to save money on fuel costs. By sharing the work of powering the boat, everyone can save on gas expenses.

Boat positioning for rafting up your boat with others

When rafting up your boat with others, it is important to consider the positioning of each boat. There are a few different ways to do this, and the best way will depend on the size and shape of your boats, as well as the current conditions.

In general, you want the boats to be close together, but not so close that they are touching. You also want them to be facing in the same direction, with the bow of one boat directly in front of the stern of the next. This will help create a stable platform and minimize drag.

Lines and knots for rafting up boats

When rafting up boats, it is important to use lines and knots that will keep the boats together and prevent them from drifting apart. The bow line is used to connect the front of one boat to the back of another boat.

The stern line is used to connect the back of one boat to the front of another boat. The spring line is used to keep the boats from drifting apart or towards each other. There are a variety of different knots that can be used for rafting up boats, including the clove hitch, sheet bend, and bowline.

Slow down while joining a raft up

When you’re in a hurry, it’s easy to jump into a raft before everyone is ready. But this can lead to problems. If someone is already in the raft, and you try to get in, they may not be able to move over and give you room. This can cause a traffic jam and make it hard for people to get in or out of the raft. It’s also dangerous if people are trying to get in or out while the raft is moving.

Rafting etiquette you should abide by

Rafting is a popular summer activity enjoyed by many people. While it can be a lot of fun, there are some basic etiquette rules that should be followed to ensure everyone has a good time. Here are some tips for rafting etiquette:

  • Always listen to the guide. They are in charge and know the best way to navigate the river.
  • Do not swim in the area directly in front of the raft. It can be dangerous and disruptive to the other passengers.
  • Be careful when getting in and out of the raft. Wet surfaces can be slippery.
  • If you need to use the bathroom, please do so discreetly away from the group.
  • Don’t bring any glass containers on the trip – they can easily break and create a lot of messes.

Common raft up mistakes people commit

A raft up is a great way to spend time on the water with friends, but there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure everyone has a good time. Here are some of the most common mistakes people make when rafting up.

1. Not having enough anchor line. Make sure you have enough line to reach the bottom, or else your boat will drift away.

2. Not using enough anchors. If you only have one anchor, it won’t be able to hold the boat in place against the current. Use at least two anchors for a successful raft up.

3. Not spacing out the anchors properly. Make sure each anchor is spaced out evenly so the boat doesn’t tip over.

4. Leaving too much slack in the line between boats.

Safety tips while rafting up your boat

Rafting up your boat is a great way to keep it safe while you are not using it. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when rafting up your boat:

  • Make sure that the boats are securely tied together.
  • Make sure that all of the passengers are wearing life jackets.
  • Make sure that the engines are turned off.
  • Make sure that everyone is aware of what is going on and knows where they should be in case of an emergency.
  • Make sure that everyone stays calm and follows the instructions of the captain.

When rafting up with other boats there are a few things that you need to do to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible. The first step is to find a spot that is big enough for all the boats to fit in.

Once you have found a spot, make sure that everyone is aware of what is going on and has agreed to raft up. Next, tie each boat together using either dock lines or boat lines. Make sure that the lines are tight so that the boats don’t move around. Finally, make sure everyone stays safe and has a good time!

Celebrations as the final winners received their car keys.

By Our Reporter

MTN MoMo Uganda Limited’s highly rewarding promotion, MoMo Nyabo Waaka came to an exciting end with the winners of the last batch of three cars picking them up, amidst cheer and pomp from their loved ones and well-wishers. This was the fourth edition of the promotion.

Since its launch in May, the 2 months-long MTN MoMo Nyabo Waaka promotion has rewarded active MTN MoMo customers with 24 brand new Toyota succeed cars, and over 2 billion shillings worth of Mobile Money to MTN MoMo Customers and agents.

Ugx.1.6 billion shillings was given out to 16000 active MTN MoMo Customers and Ugx.540 million to 5400 agents.

Speaking at the grand finale of the MoMo Nyabo Waaka promotion, Richard Yego, the Managing Director of MTN Mobile Money Services Uganda Ltd, said that the winner’s lives have been greatly impacted due to this promotion whose main aim was to give back to MTN MoMo customers and agents, in form of cash, smartphones, and brand-new cars.

“One of our first winners was Wasswa Muzamiru from Nansana, who had just lost his job of being a special-car driver. With the brand-New Toyota Succeed that he won from the MoMo Nyabo Waaka promotion, he can now earn a living driving his own car that he won by simply depositing 20,000shillings,” Yego said, in reference to the impact of the life-changing promotion.

Before handing over the last three cars, Yego congratulated all the MoMo Nyabo winners and urged them to continue using the service while vigilantly protecting themselves against fraudsters.

The famous Jenifer who featured in the Momo Nyabo Waaka advert also turned up for the grand finale in which three winners; John Barongo, Rasto Butiga, and Geoffrey Mugabi received the last three cars of the promotion.

Jacqueline Ayebare, a resident of Namugongo, who was using an MTN number registered in her husband, John Barongo’s name, with moist eyes said she has been actively sending and receiving money using her MTN Momo account without knowing that this exercise would reward her with a car. She thanked her husband for buying her the MTN Simcard in his name. Now the family has its own family car, courtesy of MTN MoMo Nyabo.

40-year-old Butiga, from Gayaza, said this car had come as a miracle and it is to be of great use in fetching money to his pockets. “I got a call telling me that I had won a car but I grilled the callers to the dot, thinking they were conmen. It was after realizing the familiar voice of Zahara Toto a TV presenter and Richard Tuwangye who assured me that the car is real and belonged to me that I agreed. Now here I am,” said an excited Butiga.

In a sideline interview, Mugabi, the third winner and a resident of Entebbe-Kitooro, greatly praised MTN for blessing his family with a new car.

With a giant smile, Mugabi urged Ugandans to stick to MTN which has a clear network coverage even deep in the villages where people can access mobile money.

The grand finale celebrations of MoMo Nyabo Waaka were crowned with the sound of exciting traditional drums as well as entertainment from the popular local artiste, Karole Kasita.

Cryptocurrency regulation in Uganda: What you need to know

$
0
0

By Our Reporter

“This is to advise that Bank of Uganda has not licensed any institution to sell cryptocurrencies or to facilitate the trade in crypto-currencies. This is in line with the official government position as communicated by the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development in October 2019,” wrote Andrew Kawere, the acting director of the national payments system in a circular dated April 29. This was written in a bid to curb the growth in popularity of crypto currencies in the country.

The stern warning was to push payment providers to stop dealing with crypto exchanges as a way to slow down adoption by the people. The claim is that these currencies have exposed people to risky investments and Ponzi schemes.

What is Crypto?

A cryptocurrency, crypto-currency, crypto, or coin is a digital currency designed to work as a medium of exchange through a computer network that is not reliant on any central authority, such as a government or bank, to uphold or maintain it.

Cryptocurrencies instead use a decentralized system to record transactions and issue new units. All transactions are verified and recorded on a secure digital ledger called a blockchain.

Cryptocurrencies have been around since 2009 when Bitcoin, the first and most popular one was founded. Many other cryptocurrencies have since been created with over 18,000 in existence as of March 2022.

Other popular ones include Ethereum, Litecoin and Ripple. Each currency has its strengths and weaknesses regarding use cases. Some are great because they are widely accepted and others sit on great blockchains (the ledger I mentioned earlier) that can be used for contracts, deeds, etc.

Is Crypto Safe?

A cryptocurrency is simply a medium of exchange just like any other physical currency (money), precious metals like gold and silver or even cowry shells. It is important that one first and foremost understands this.

It is, therefore, prone to the same issues the other mediums have, to varying degrees of course.

Like money, it can gain or lose value, it can be stolen, it can facilitate illegal activity, and fake ones also do exist (One coin is a great example of a fake cryptocurrency). So the same care must be taken when buying and indeed securing your cryptocurrency that you would for US dollars, Euros or Gold.

What about Crypto Scams?

There are two main ways a crypto scam can happen.

The first is one where an alleged cryptocurrency is sold to people and the sellers who are often the creators disappear. This happened with One coin. It operated more like a Ponzi scheme than an actual currency. A US warrant was filed for the arrest of the founder, Ruja Ignatova, but she is still at large and her whereabouts are unknown.

The second is a scam that is facilitated by a known and widely accepted cryptocurrency for example Bitcoin or USDT. Without the existence of crypto, these would’ve still taken place but using fiat currencies as the medium of exchange. We, therefore wouldn’t really call this a crypto scam but we added it because crypto is the medium of choice.

Many Ponzi schemes today use USDT because of its stability. A recent scheme was by a company called DF Company. Yes, the “company” is in the name. Users bought USDT and sent it to DF’s wallet and were promised high returns which as is often the case, they received but only for a while. A few weeks ago, the website, social media accounts and chat groups suddenly disappeared.

So yeah, just as is the case with fiat currencies, scams will always exist. We just need to be vigilant to avoid becoming victims.

Crypto in Uganda

As is the case all over the world, Ugandans have elected not to be left behind by the crypto boom. According to Reuters, Ugandans have received cryptocurrency worth the equivalent of about $4.8 billion between March 2019 and March 2022. That’s about 13% of GDP.

This surge in crypto adoption coupled with the inevitable scams that followed caught the attention of the Ministry of Finance and the central bank. They went ahead to warn of the dangers of crypto in a public statement.

Recently, the central bank took it a notch higher by restricting the ability to buy crypto via mobile money. It stopped payment aggregators from transacting with crypto exchanges. This they hope, will throttle its adoption by Ugandans hence reducing exposure to the risks involved.

Our view is a little different. As crypto continues its inevitable rise globally, Ugandans won’t want to miss out on the opportunities it brings. This means that the uptake will continue despite the restrictions. Currently, Banks are still allowed to transact with crypto exchanges and we reckon the majority of investors will shift to them.

It is also still possible to buy cryptocurrencies via exchanges that operate in other countries. The global and decentralised nature of these currencies means that they operate globally without restrictions.

A worry of the Ugandan government as well as others around the world is the use of crypto to facilitate criminal and terrorist activity. The anonymous nature and ease of transfer globally make it a perfect way to transfer money around the world. The crackdown however will push many of its illicit users further underground.

Mobile money and bank accounts present a good opportunity for some monitoring and surveillance of the movement of funds to and from crypto exchanges. From the interview we had with Abel Namureba, the country manager of Yellow Card, the crackdown on these mediums will make it much more difficult to monitor and trace funds that are moved through crypto as they will go through multiple nodes abroad before they arrive in the country.

In the end, scams will always exist regardless of the modus operandi. It is up to us to educate ourselves and keep ahead. Check out Yellow Card’s crypto academy for an in-depth understanding of Cryptocurrency, the blockchain, as well as financial literacy.

Nigerian award winning singer Adekunle Gold was Uganda’s guest on Friday morning ahead of his mega Club Dome concert the next day on Saturday evening. As expected the singer did not disappoint as he left a very impressed crowd.

Club Dome concert will go down as one of the most filled to brim concerts at Lugogo Cricket Oval with over 20,000 people turning up to witness the much anticipated concert that saw all party lovers turn up to one venue in large numbers on a Saturday when there could have been many other places to go.

Gates where open by midday and by 4PM the venue was ready for a party. Our own rising star Vamos entertained the crowd before Sheebah, Vinka, John blaq, Kataleya and Kandle also took the crowd through a “Time of my life” session.

DJs Roja, Slick Stuart, Alisha, Dash, and Kasbaby also checked on the decks as Sheila Gashumba and Sammy Wetala played the Emcee roles.

South African Amapiano singer Costa Titch took over stage having the crowd singing along his famous hits. Adekunle, the main act then stepped on stage and took the Concert to climax. His soothing music seemed to heal all souls as they all got soaked into his lyrics as they sang along with their cups in the air. As usual, our hard to tame revellers made attempts to step on stage with very limited success but a few did share a dance with the singer.

Club Dome concert was one to remember and one worth all your money and time. Here are some moments from the concert.
