Joan Semanda Kiiza, the PR and Communications Manager, MultiChoice Uganda.
By Our Reporter
A new training initiative is set to revolutionise the African TV sector, taking industry skills to a new level and boosting the quality of content for audiences across the continent.
The initiative will be a collaborative project between MultiChoice, local television channels in various African territories, and the MultiChoice Talent Factory, the MultiChoice industry-development and training programme.
Speaking about the program, Joan Semanda Kizza the PR and Communications manager Multichoice Uganda said, “We have started to experience the effect of the Multichoice Talent Factory with the quality of films aired on our channels produced by Ugandans that have employed our MTF Alumni.”
“At the recently concluded AMVCAs, we witnessed our Ugandan MTF Alumni bag awards, which is a testament of the result of the impact that the training has on the film industry and largely the Ugandan economy,” she added.
Semanda further noted how the Ugandan MTF alumni have succeeded both locally and internationally in the film industry, “Film makers like Daisy Masembe and Isiko Abubaker have had their film Engaito not only recognized at the AMVCAs but also at the Uganda Film Festival and New Vision film awards. Seeing Cissy Nalumansi, our alumni, direct the Namuddu series, consult at Victoria University as well as script the Sanyu series, one of the most widely watched series in Uganda, is a daily affirmation that indeed the film industry will improve and grow as a result of the impact of the MultiChoice Talent Factory.”
While launching the programme expansion, Fhulufhelo Badugela, the MultiChoice Africa CEO said, “Our vision is to upskill production professionals, and to raise the standard of productions right across Africa. This will boost Africa’s film and television industry exponentially, because as you capacitate more people, more people are motivated to start projects, and everybody benefits, including the viewers.”
The programme will consist of online learning courses, masterclasses, and practical training. MultiChoice will partner with local broadcasters to help develop skills in the various territories. It will include certified short courses in critical production skills such as post-production, sound, screenwriting, 3D animation and cinematography.
The programme’s online-learning component enables MultiChoice to reach as many content creators as possible, across the continent, while also allowing working professionals to do courses at their own pace.
The programme will initially reach 300 broadcast workers who are already producing content in their local markets through e-learning. They will then be able to instantly apply their learnings on domestic productions.
Masterclasses will be held in person and also broadcast online with local and international industry leaders. The focus is on creating and curating masterclasses that are fit for purpose and meet the needs of each country.
“This is an investment in the future of our industry, and investment goes beyond financial investment; it also requires skills, time and a core understanding of the consumer needs. But the most immediate impact will be to raise the standard of productions across Africa.” Badugela added.
Badugela concluded that she anticipated the African training initiative will lead to more productions with higher production values, which would boost viewership and the financial viability of the industry – especially in emerging African TV markets.

UAP OLD Mutual Financial Services held their Unit Trust Annual General Meeting earlier today at their premises in Nakawa Business Park. The meeting was punctuated by a presentation of the summation of the Unit Trust performance in the year ended 2021. And as such, the meeting was chaired by Professor Samuel Ssejjakka, Board chair UAP OM Financial Services,
According to Professor Ssejjakka, the UAP Old Mutual Unit Trust registered a 78% growth in fund size closing the year at UGX 615 billion in Assets Under Management from UGX 345 billion in 2020. The largest inflows registered were in the flagship umbrella trust fund which recorded an 80% growth. The Balanced fund registered a growth of 21% while the Money market fund dropped by 7% during the same period. We closed 2021 with 11,894 unit holders thus registering a growth of 76% from 6,751 by the close of 2020.
He further highlighted that Uganda’s economy is estimated to have expanded by 4.6%, rising from 3.5% recorded in the prior year. During the year, inflation remained subdued with annual headline inflation closing the year at 2.9% from 3.6% in 2020. This was largely driven by muted aggregate demand and the stable shilling.
The Uganda shilling remained robust gaining 2.89% against the dollar during the year which was largely attributed to increased portfolio inflows, NGOs inflows and coffee export receipts that exceeded the dollar demand due to low import demand
He mentioned that Interest rates were generally on a downward trend throughout the year with short-term, medium-term and long-term rates falling by averages of 100 bps, 183 bps and 200 bps respectively. This was driven by the central bank expansionary monetary policy stance that saw the CBR drop to 6.5% and excess liquidity in the market due to low credit pick up caused by covid effects,” read an excerpt of the presentation.
Professor further demonstrated that during the year, local equity prices continued to dip with the USE LSI falling by 2.5% driven by poor investor sentiment as investors continued to shy away from equities. However, the USE ALSI went up by 8.5% driven by recovery in cross listed stocks.
“In the regional markets, the Kenyan equity market continued with the positive momentum it had exhibited in the latter part of the previous year. This was reflected in the NASI, NSE-20 and NSE-25 indices returning 9.4%, 1.8% and 9.6%, respectively. The major driving factors of this growth were the price gains in shares of Equity Group Holdings Plc, ABSA Bank Kenya Plc, British American Tobacco Kenya Plc, KCB Group Plc and Safaricom Plc,” explained Byaruhanga.
The UAP Old Mutual Unit Trust report was confirmed by the auditors, as represented by Doreen Mutesi in a verbatim statement from KPMG.
“We have audited the financial statements of Unit Trust Funds (Umbrella Trust, Money Markets and Balanced Fund) as at 31 December 2021,which comprise the statement of financial position as at 31 December 2021, the statement of comprehensive income, changes in net assets and cash flows for the year then ended, and notes to the financial statements, including significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.
In our opinion, the accompanying financial statements give a true and fair view of the financial position of UAP Old Mutual Financial Services Unit Trust Funds (Umbrella Trust, Money Markets and Balanced Fund) as at 31 December 2021, and of its financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and in the manner required by the Capital Markets Authority (Amendment) Act, 2016 Laws of Uganda and the Collective Investment Schemes (Financial and Accounting) Regulations, 2003 Laws and regulations of Uganda,” Mutesi read.
Last week, Tororo Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Sarah Opendi asked the Ministry of Education and Sports to ban secular musicians from performing in schools across Uganda.
Hon. Opendi said that as a mother, she has all along been concerned with the musicians’ dresscodes and behaviours when hired to perform in schools.
She also asked teachers and parents to join hands to fight such events where inspirational figures like musicians are instead promoting nudity and vulgarity among school children.
“My reason for tabling this motion in Parliament is what we see musicians take in these schools. Its not bad to have them perform in schools but their dress codes, dance moves, are devastating to the morals of the school children. Its so ashaming that such inspirational figures like musicians decide to promote nudity. I personally don’t agree with it and I call upon heads of schools and parents in this fight,” MP Sarah Opendi said.
However, as one of the most booked artists for music concerts in schools, Sheebah Karungi trashed Hon. Opendi’s motion tabled in Parliament.
Appearing on a local TV interview, Sheebah said its unfair for the government to control the music business without being considerate of their careers.
“When I was out there earning only Shs.9000 in Karaoke, where were they? When I starved while at church, who helped? You can’t wait until after people have struggled to put up their lives by themselves and try to put boundaries on them. You cannot control how I choose to live my life,” Sheebah Karungi said.
Several artists in Uganda continue to share their reactions on Ms. Opendi’s motion.
The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda (COU) Rt. Rev. Dr. Seven Kaziimba Mugalu has said he will reward virgin school going girls.
Rt. Rev. Kaziimba made these remarks during his Pastoral visit to some schools in Wakiso district ahead celebrations to mark 50 years of the diocese of Kampala at Gayaza High School.
According to the communications officer COU, Adams Sadiiki, the Archbishop’s initiative is aimed at promoting purity in courtship, healthy dating and respectable marriages.
Rt. Rev. Kaziimba while serving as Bishop of Mityana, started this program of honoring couples that upheld chastity till the time of marriage.
Sadiik further asserts that Dr. Kazimba has put aside some cash rewards for the same program that will be given to girls who will pass an assessment by a team of highly respected born-again women well conversant with proving that one is a virgin.

Frank Tumwebaze, Uganda Tourism Board CEO Lilly Ajarova, and other delegates, the couple were amazed by Uganda’s cultural diversity and the chimp tracking experience in Kibale National Park. The excursion came shortly after the commemoration of World Chimpanzee Day which falls on 14th July 2022.
Following the experience at the UWA Offices in Kibale National Park, Mr Howard remarked, “I was amazed by the interaction of the primates and its closeness to human behaviour. I implore people from all over the world, especially African Americans to come to Uganda and dive into the amazing touristic adventure for better understanding and knowledge of our footprints and deeper roots. People need to make their way to Uganda as it’s beautiful and worth visiting.”
He added, “the experience I had was more like those songs that one would hear on Christmas that welcome you home. The nature walks through the park was covered by sweet sound of the birds and the creatures. And the movement of the chimps; felt like something I had deep within my DNA.”
Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, Minister of Agriculture, animal Industry & Fisheries (MAAIF) lauded Terrence Howard and his team for making time to visit destination Uganda and appreciated the Uganda Tourism Board for diligently marketing the country.
