Maternal diet influences the health of both the child and mother. Pregnancy is one of the most crucial and sensitive periods in a woman’s life and also very exciting because it is the time the entire family awaits the birth of a new born baby, therefore taking extra caution to have a balanced diet is crucial.
Dr. Sabrina Kitaka – a Paediatrician, and Senior lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics and Child health at Makerere University ‘s School of Medicine says, ‘During pregnancy, a mother is not only responsible for herself but also the new life that is growing inside her. Optimal nutrition is of utmost priority and drinking milk during pregnancy ensures that the mother meets many of her nutritional requirements. A pregnant woman needs an abundance of nutrients during pregnancy, which milk provides.’
Dr. Kitaka adds that today, getting milk isn’t a challenge because it is always available since there are options of having it pre-packaged for consumption.
Marketing Manager Fresh Dairy – Vincent Omoth highlights that Fresh Dairy Long life UHT milk offers convenience to consumers because it lasts up to 90 days with or without it being refrigerated, tastes as good as fresh milk and is now available in both 500ml and 200ml packs costing 1,600UGX and 800UGX respectively.
Dr. Sabrina Kitaka noted the following as critical nutrients that pregnant mothers can get from drinking a glass of milk (200ml) daily: Calcium, Protein, iodine, Potassium, Phosphorous and Vitamins B2 and B12.
Milk is an excellent source of Calcium: A pregnant woman needs at least 1000 mg of calcium every day which can be attained by daily consumption of milk. Calcium helps strengthen the baby’s rapidly-developing bones and teeth, boosts muscle, heart and nerve development as well.
Milk is rich in Protein: During pregnancy, protein is very important because it aids in the build-up of the uterus. This vital nutrient ensures a steady blood supply, especially to vital parts of the female anatomy such as the breasts and the baby’s tissues.
Rich in Vitamin D: Vitamin D is vital to ensure a normal birth weight and prevention of neonatal rickets. You can get most of your nutrients and other vitamins from various food sources. But when it comes to Vitamin D, milk is one of the very few sources rich in this vitamin. As a result, milk becomes an important component of your pregnancy diet, says Dr. Sabrina.
Helps to Combat Heartburn
Milk is a natural antacid and can combat heartburn which is a common occurrence during pregnancy, thanks to all the hormones that are playing havoc within the mother’s body. Since it is not advisable to take over-the-counter medications when you are pregnant, milk becomes an excellent solution to heartburn. ‘In fact, drinking a glass of warm milk right before bedtime improves the quality of sleep for pregnant mothers because insomnia is common during pregnancy. However, never drink milk immediately after a meal,’ cautions Dr. Sabrina.
Healthy Way to Stay Hydrated
Dr Sabrina Kitaka says that keeping yourself hydrated while pregnant is extremely important because the baby is also drawing fluids from your body. Milk will help you keep the hydration level of the body up.
Higher Level of Insulin
Milk contains a higher level of insulin. Studies have proven that children born to women who regularly consumed milk during their pregnancy had a lesser risk of contracting diseases or developing Type 2 diabetes in their late teens, according to Dr. Sabrina.
Enhances the Fetal Brain Development
Milk has a significant quantity of iodine. IQ development in children is key and Iodine is a key component. Also, being rich in proteins, amino acids, and fatty acids, milk helps with the development of the baby’s nervous system.’
Dr. Kitaka concluded by saying that milk can be extremely beneficial during pregnancy if taken correctly and cautions that pregnant mothers should avoid dairy products made from unpasteurized milk, endeavor to drink warm milk, never gulp milk fast, but enjoy it in small sips. Once in a while, you can give it a twist by diluting milk with water (two portions of milk to one portion of water); preparing fruit shakes and smoothies by adding fruits; or pouring it over your breakfast cereal.

Uganda’s Hospitality Industry has for a long time, faced an issue of standardization. It has, since time immemorial, been hard to understand how to determine, define and award stars, and the standards there in. Not anymore. Hotel Owners, Lodge owners, among other top tier accommodation facility owners now have cause to celebrate. The Moriah Hospitality Awards are finally happening in Uganda. The awards, renowned worldwide for working with top notch Hotels and Lodges to enhance service standards, are finally happening in Uganda.
Speaking during a phone call, the CEO of Moriah Hospitality Awards Africa; Ebenezer Bunya, said that he trusts that the team in Uganda will be able to execute the mandate of the award ceremony in Uganda. He added that the international team has camped in Uganda since January, led by Ugandan CEO, Evelyn Banga, and are already in the process of tying down partnerships to aid the seamless organization of the Moriah Hospitality Awards 2022.
Evelyn Banga, CEO Uganda
“It is important to celebrate those who labor to provide top notch service in the Hospitality Industry. But in the same vein, we seek to emphasize the need for those who miss out on the nominations and awarding, to learn from the attributes and service standards the award winners showcase,” explained Bunya.
During a phone interview that she had with this website, Ugandan CEO of Moriah Hospitality Awards, Evelyn Banga, explained that hospitality business is the back bone of the tourism industry.
“If we are to attract bigger revenues as a country through tourism, there is need for hotel and lodge owners to step up to the international standards. But to do that, they need to learn what the standards are. They need to know what the International Market needs and therefore expects. They need to know the service, branding and etiquette standards, among other aspects. That is what we are here to do. To educate those who are oblivious, and celebrate those who are on a good learning curve. To hold the Hospitality Industry in general in one hand, and usher it towards a Uganda of consistent and standardized hospitality service,” explained Banga.
She then urged all the industry stake holders to invest in creating experiences, hiring professionals, and training all their staff to meet the international standards set. She lauded Lemala Wild Waters Lodge for having scooped 2nd place as the Most Instagramable Hotel in the world, and emphasized the need for other hotels to emulate them.
“Moriah Hospitality seeks to reward those who have labored to grow. Those who appreciate hospitality as an ever changing concept of human needs, and therefore react promptly to meet the requirements that come with the trends. Those who appreciate the immense value of great service, great food and great architecture and therefore embrace the notion of learning, training to be better. Those who seek to satisfy their customers through and through again, so that the industry as a whole can grow. All the hotels that don’t do this, ought to learn from those that do it right,” explained Banga.
HOW NOMINATION IS DONE
According to Evelyn Banga, The Moriah Hospitality Awards team of experts in hospitality invests time in visiting all the luxury hotels between 2-5 stars in Uganda (Those who want to book an assessment can send an email to info@moriahhospitality.com ) After which, the experts vet the hotels or lodges (among other accommodation types) according to a number of service facets like waiting staff etiquette, hygiene, branding, food, facilities, modern plumbing, experiential interior and exterior architectural design, to mention but a few. Those that pass the tests are then awarded marks ,which are then compared with the other accommodation facilities in their categories. After which the best 6 in the different categories are nominated in the Moriah Hospitality Awards.
The Moriah Hospitality Awards, through the team of experts at Moriah Hospitality, however also offer comprehensive trainings curated according to the needs established after the vetting session. Hotels that are not contacted for the vetting process of the Moriah Hospitality Awards can also reach out to Moriah Hospitality, and can therefore only receive the service audit and consequent trainings on request.
Hospitality brands like Serena Hotel, Lemala Wild Waters Lodge, Sheraton Hotel, Skyz Naguru, Chobe Safari Lodge, Latitude 0 Degrees Hotel Makindye, Nile Safari Lodge, Apoka Lodge, Baboon Safari Lodge, Gorilla Heights, Kyaninga Lodge, among many others, are expected to vie for the awards come December 2022.

Kampala came to a standstill this Monday morning after police held a group of wives that were protesting over several issues against their husbands that are affecting the harmony in homes.
According to the housewives, side-chics have taken over their husbands’ lives and are spoiling their marriages.
“Wives also deserve trips to Dubai,” a placard from one of the women from what they called the Association of Housewives read.
The women who staged at Garden City, Mulago and Usafi Round Abouts brought morning traffic to a standstill as they complained that prices have gone up but husbands are not increasing “Kameeza Money”.
The women were whisked to Central Police Station in Kampala where among their grievances told Police that “husbands are no longer eating at home.”
“They just be in bars, watch soccer, eat muchomo and come home belching yet we have prepared nice food for them,” one of the women said.
Police advised the women to get off the streets and make a formal gathering where they can address their issues. It is then that the women said they are holding a Women’s Conference this Wednesday April 13th at the NCC in Naguru.
Meanwhile, the protests have gone viral and attracted the attention of big wigs like opposition stalwart former Presidential aspirant Kizza Besigye who said he feels the women’s pain.
According to a tweet by the seasoned politician, women are in pain and society deserves to pay attention. He further defended men, saying that the reason why Kameeza money is low is because of the economy and that women should instead lead the fight against socioeconomic justice.
“Women are in pain; let’s pay attention! The biggest source of problems is, likely, the economy- men are in hiding and don’t have ‘Kameeza money’. Women should, instead, lead the fight for Socioeconomic Justice; I am already dressed- to go!” he tweeted.
One of the thorny issues to discuss at the conference is the longstanding war between housewives and the side-chics who have recently gained popularity among the married men at the expense of the former.
Men are rumoured to be splurging their cash on their non-official lovers at the expense of their official wives hence the protest of the women demanding more from their husbands.
With such topics, the Women’s Conference promises to be an explosive one.
The state minister for higher education Hon. Dr. JC Muyingo has said that Uganda shall never again close its education institutions because of a pandemic due to technological advancement.
The state minister made these remarks on 9th April 2022 in Johannesburg South Africa while touring the Huawei exhibition hall to see the smart education solutions for Africa. He also attended the Huawei ICT Competition Sub-Saharan Africa awards ceremony where he awarded three Uganda Students from Makerere University who took first position in Huawei ICT Competition Sub Saharan Africa 2021.
The event attracted various dignitaries such as the Minister of Communication and Digital technologies of South Africa Hon. Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of education Tanzania Hon. Eliamani Sedoyeka, Huawei Southern Africa President Mr. Chen Leo, and Director UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa Prof. Lidia Arthur Brito.
Hon JC Muyingo who represented the government and awarded team Uganda made a key note address, where he thanked Huawei for supporting the digitalization efforts in the country more so the education sector.
“I thank Huawei Technologies for supporting digitalization efforts in the country generally, and more specifically for the support to the ICT initiatives focusing on the Education Sector. Government of Uganda is committed to upscaling and mainstreaming ICT in the delivery of Education as a measure to facilitate not only improved delivery and make continued learning more interesting, but also prepare for any eventualities in the future”, says Hon JC Muyingo as he makes his speech at the ceremony.
He noted that the ministry is working with the National council of Higher education and higher institutions of learning to accredit technology initiatives for long distance learning and smart education solutions.
“We requested our National Council for Higher Education to work with our universities and accredit them to operate through Open and Distance e-Learning. Not all were able to operate during the lockdown, but many started building their capacity to offer on-line learning and to-date they have adopted and operate a multi-pronged approach to teaching and learning. I see opportunity here for capacity building, and I request all of us here to come together, share ideas and make the best use of this innovation and experience to improve our chances of success for use of digital solutions now, and for any future disruptions of learning in our respective countries.” He said
On the global effect of covid-19 to education institutions and the way forward, Hon Dr. JC Muyingo noted that “The Corona Virus Pandemic presented the education sector with profound challenges especially within developing countries. No one foresaw the coming of this pandemic and the crippling effect it would have on our economies. In Uganda, fifteen million learners were out of school for two years, and our education sector, like most countries around the world, was forced to rethink the delivery of education. We were fully prepared for the move to online education delivery, and it is a big lesson learnt which the country is now aggressively addressing through a digital agenda strategy. With the broad experience that Huawei has developed over the years, I am confident that this partnership can help us to find more innovative solutions to these challenges that we are facing.”
“With the education solutions I have seen at the Huawei exhibition hall, never again shall we close our education institutions because of Covid-19 pandemic or any other pandemic,” he added
At the same ceremony, Huawei launched its LEAP skills development programme. Announced at its ICT Competition Awards Ceremony, LEAP aims to help advance the ICT skills of more than 100 000 people across the Sub-Saharan Africa region within three years.

It includes a wide range of activities spanning from ICT training and certification courses, government digital capacity building and ICT skills competitions.

“As a new self-taught designer, I learnt a lot from both Santa Anzo and fellow young designers who have been in the business longer than myself. We are still in touch and still supporting each other, something that was made possible by the MTN Pulse and Arapapa mentorship program,” Kusiima says.
According to Mickeydaddy, the fashion industry is a very challenging industry, despite its glitz and glamor. He however notes that the challenges only push him to work harder and maintains that with synergy across the industry through programs such as the MTN Pulse and Arapapa mentorship program, that bring all designers together, such challenges can be turned into opportunities that can push the industry forward.
The industry challenges notwithstanding, Mickeydaddy has been able to build himself an admirable career over the years. He has dressed up people for events like miss Uganda, miss Tourism Uganda, Y+ beauty, little miss Uganda and little Miss Africa among others.
Besides winning the MTN pulse fashion mentorship Program, Mickeydaddy won the rising Fashion pearl Africa Award 2018, Designer of the Famous teen Awards 2019, best Designer Vision for Africa 2019. These awards have earned him great positions in the world of fashion such as; the Fashion Director Miss Tourism Uganda, managing Director Toto Awards Ug, country Director, little Mr and Miss Africa Uganda.
Mickeydaddy is intent on nurturing fellow younger designers through passing down his learnings from the MTN Pulse and Arapapa mentorship program.
“Not only have you been a fantastic mentor to me, but you have taught me how to mentor other people am so lucky to work with someone (Santa Anzo) who is my mentor and inspiration. Thank you MTN Pulse, for creating that connection,” Mickey says.
As a young designer who immensely benefitted from the MTN Pulse and Arapapa fashion mentorship, Judith Kusiima looks forward to building her fashion brand that deals in creating casual weekend outfits for women, while making an impact in the society and beyond the borders of Uganda, a key lesson she learnt from her interaction with fashion icon, Santa Anzo.
“It was an incredible program and I hope more of these are arranged to support many talented designers in this country,” she says.
