By Reporter

Fast rising singer Danz Eko with real name Daniel Kikomeko is a versatile person of skills in both visual and performing arts signed under Sukuma Entertainment. His song Nkuliko has been trending on all Tvs and Radios. We caught up with him and shared a lot.

Who is Danz Eko?

Daniel Kikomeko. A versatile person of skills in both visual and performing arts signed under Sukuma Entertainment. Am a perfectionist and sometimes they regard me as a person with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).i am an audio producer and soon venturing into videography business too in Seattle Washington.

Briefly tell us your music background? Was your family supportive in the first place?

My music started way back in my childhood participating in music, dance and drama school activities which was a great pillar to groom me as an artist.

When it comes to my family, they have been supportive in my music journey. They have been the number one fans of Danz Eko and have invested heavily in me. Thanks to Munene.

What is the saddest moment you can recall when you had just started?

Started the career during pandemic lockdown and whatever I was doing wasn’t consumed as much as I expected. I lost direct touch with my fans.

Who inspired you to make music?

Am inspired by the legendary artists who I used to sing their songs and felt I could be like them. In my early days it was Jose Chameleon and other great Ugandan artists that had great hits then.

My music is a piece of love, entertainment and Godly. I cross in all genres depending on the vibe and the people I want to serve at the time. Being a Deejay and having great composition skills, I just love creating good music although I borrow from the trends of hip-hop, Afro pop, RnB and Kidandali.

With no doubt your songs are receiving massive airplays, in your thinking, what contributed to this?

Having a great management team is the magic behind. Sukuma Entertainment is my management team which guides me in which song to buy, production and promotion. They have done a very tremendous job to see that Danz Eko as a brand is appreciated not only in Uganda but also in the Diaspora. Thanks too to my online promotion team, Danz Eko fans pages plus DE team which has been good at pushing and connecting my brand with media houses such as TV, Radio stations, print media and Deejays.

Let’s talk about your latest song, what is the message behind this song?

NKULIKO is a cool song that talks about one’s love towards the other. It shows how someone can stick to someone they love to the point of confessing that their love is cemented and that’s why it can’t be separated.

Who writes your songs?

I wrote the first four songs on my album but of late my management has been getting them from great writers like Dokita Brain and Ink Stained.

Which artists have you collaborated with?

I have so far  collaborated with Karole Kasita on a song called Yegwe. Big song. I also have a collaboration with Mary Kim that is coming out soon.

Apart from your latest song, what other songs have you produced?

Gimme Love, No waste time, Balibayo, Vibe, Mukidongo, Cottage, Yegwe

What is your favorite song among them all?

Vibe.. it separates me as a listener from singer and makes me love the artist and the song.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

I love my fans and request them to love me and my music back. Follow me on my social media platforms (Danz Eko Official)

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Actual music is not my full time job. Am a Graphic designer, Audio Producer, Deejay and business man in Seattle Washington. Music is my side gig

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

Internet has greatly helped me to reach out to my fans where performances can’t take place. It has helped in increasing online viewership and increasing my online fan base.

What is your favourite song to perform?

 NKuliko

Which famous female musicians do you admire?

I admire so many because they do different music genres

What has been your greatest challenge in the Ug music industry?

Stiff Competition. Artists release good music every week. So as fans are still falling in love with your music then a new banger comes on the way. Artists don’t sleep.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into No trouble yet. I try to stay in my line

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

Enforcing copyright law where the creators benefits from:

 What’s next

My fanz should expect good music this year. I have good songs that are going to meet the demands of life at a party. This year is going to be our year.

Uganda Breweries Staff Plant 1,200 Trees in Luweero District

By Our Reporter

Over 1,000 trees have been planted by a section of Uganda Breweries staff at Bethany Land Institute found in Nandere Parish, in Luweero District. This planting exercise is part of the Running Out of Trees (ROOTs) initiative that is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Water and Environment with support from other organisations in the private sector.

The ROOTs Campaign was launched in February 2020 as a 5-year project which aims at bringing private sector companies onboard to support Government’s initiative to restore forest cover. For the past two years, the campaign has managed to attract the support from various corporate companies and cultural institutions which include; KCCA, Tree Adoption Uganda, Stanbic Bank, ATC Uganda, MOGAS, MTN, Buganda Kingdom to mention but a few. These have supported the cause through purchasing tree seedlings as well as taking part in the tree planting activities across Uganda.

The tree planting activity is part of Uganda Brewery’s efforts to meet the global 2030 targets which are in line with the Spirit of Progress of Agenda.

“At Uganda Breweries we believe that tree planting has huge potential of tackling the climate crisis we are experiencing that is why we are committed to reducing carbon emissions and acting on climate change,” said Suleiman Ngondi, Uganda Breweries Sustainability and Communications Manager.

Uganda Breweries Staff Plant 1,200 Trees in Luweero District

Bethany Land Institute was founded by three Priest friends, Frs. Emmanuel
Katongole, Cornelius Ssempala and Anthony Zachary Rweza as a response to some of the challenges affecting society including food insecurity and environmental degradation. It’s on this land that UBL staff planted trees in Lazarus Forest, a 162-acre natural forest which serves as a base of ecological education and reforestation at the Institute.

The tree planting exercise is in collaboration with Tree Adoption Uganda who will be mapping all the trees planted using the ROOTs App as well as monitoring them till they’re fully grown. “With this planting exercise we believe that we are gradually closing in on 4 million trees that have been planted only this year under the ROOTs campaign. We believe that we would have doubled this number by the close of this year,” said Angella Kasiimire from Tree Adoption Uganda.

Ngondi, who led the UBL staff to the planting exercise also appreciated the staff that withstood the scorching sun to plant the trees and help reafforest the area. “I thank the staff that took part in the exercise as well as the team at Tree Adoption Uganda that coordinated the planting exercise and Bethany Land Institute who welcomed and hosted us for a full day. With simple gestures like these and commitment, we shall realize our goal of planting the 40 million trees by 2025.” Ngondi said.

“Trees are crucial to our livelihood as they contribute to the environment by improving the air quality we inhale, conserving water and soil, as well as
supporting wildlife.” Ngodi added.

The Running out of Trees Campaign also seeks to respond to Uganda’s International obligations per the Bonn challenge where the Government pledged to restore 2.5million hectares of degraded landscapes by 2030 through forest protection, afforestation and sustainable biomass production measures under Uganda’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).

As has become custom over the years, MTN Uganda together with Salam TV have kicked this year’s effort to support vulnerable communities with alms to enable them fast through the Ramadan season. Under the theme, “A giving heart”, MTN and its partner Salam TV will go around the country to handover alms – a vital pillar of the Muslim faith observed every year during the holy month of Ramadan. The month-long donation activities kicked off with an all-embracing dinner, also known as iftar, at Hotel Africana. Present at the dinner, whose objective was to demonstrate unity and commitment to the ideals of the holy month, were Muslim leaders and notable members of the Islamic community including business partners, ambassadors, customers, and the media.

Since 2017, MTN Uganda through Salam TV (Charity) has reached out and supported less privileged Muslim communities with alms, including food and other household items to carry them through the holy month of Ramadan.

Speaking at the dinner held at Hotel Africana in Kampala, The Iftar dinner chief guest, Hon. Misa Kabanda, the Kampala Member of Parliament thanked MTN for its kind gesture and urged other companies to emulate MTN and Salam Charirty.

The MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Wim Vanhelleputte said that: “We are very pleased to spend this time with you as you begin this holy month of Ramadan, which is a very special time of spiritual reflection and renewal. On behalf of MTN Uganda, we wish you the very best as you undertake this spiritual journey.”

MTN & Salam TV partner to support the Muslim community through Ramadan

As was the case last year, MTN has brought back the special Ramadan bundles offer to ease communication during the fasting period. Every time an MTN customer buys airtime or buys a bundle worth 500/=, they will get 30 MTN minutes and 100MBs to be used between midnight and 5am that night. This offer is open to all MTN customers.

Salam TV Chairman, Hajji Kin Ibrahim Kariisa, expressed his desire to keep working with MTN Uganda based on its cordial relationship that has fostered a strong bond with the Muslim community.

“On behalf of the Muslim community, I thank MTN Uganda for partnering with us again and standing one with the Muslim community during this holy month of Ramadan. We are also happy to note that MTN is partnering with us to send off our brothers and sisters who will be embarking on a pilgrim to Mecca a month after Ramadan. MTN is indeed a steadfast partner
that we are blessed to be associated with,” Kariisa said.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam with the fast beginning at dawn and ending at sunset.

All you need to know about Mountain Gorilla Photography in Uganda

By Staff Writer

Mountain gorilla photography in Uganda is a special experience of its own and it sums the overall gorilla trekking adventure. Photographing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is the most exciting moment that every trekker awaits while on Uganda gorilla tour. That is the moment for you to create your own memories.

Finding mountain gorillas in the wild has been made easier than ever before. Tourists track only already habituated gorilla groups and the overall trek takes 2-6 hours. Once you have finally found a family of massive mountain gorillas, you settle for 1 hour enjoying face to face encounter and taking photos.

When taking photographs of mountain gorillas, visitors are encouraged to do so while maintaining a good distance of 8-10m. During photography, how you position yourself matters a lot for incredible pictures.

Where to go for mountain gorilla photography in Uganda

Uganda is a home to 2 mountain gorilla parks hence providing visitors with options to choose their best for gorilla photography. They include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park- where half of the world’s 1063 mountain gorillas all live.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are strategically positioned in the far South-western Uganda. Access to these premier mountain gorilla parks is possible by road or air and by road, you will spend 8-10 hours.

By air, the tour operator or company you book your gorilla safari for photography with can arrange fly in safari to Bwindi or Mgahinga and flights set off from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi airfield to the 2 airstrips in the Southwest- Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips.

Photographing mountain gorillas in Uganda

To enjoy photographing mountain gorillas, your crew or group must locate them first. It takes you 2-6 hours to trek through the jungles of Bwindi or Mgahinga while searching for these apes. You will be allocated to any of the 21 habituated gorilla families in Uganda to track while on gorilla photography safari.

It should be noted that every mountain gorilla group has its own composition and special story to share with the world. Photographing mountain gorilla can be simple at the same time challenging depending on the location of the gorilla family.

If you are allocated to a gorilla group that is hard to find, then expect to spend more hours in the jungles searching for it. For this case, your level of physical fitness does play a significant part. Besides, your trek involves winding through the tropical rain-forest, slippery steep slopes etc depending on the season.

Once you have come across a gorilla family, first ensure that your cameras don’t have flashlight or turn it off before starting your photo taking exercise. Using flashlight cameras during photography can make mountain gorillas get irritated or charge against you and this is not part of the experience any nature lover on photography safari would wish to be in.

Tips for mountain gorilla photography in Uganda

Vegetation- when you embark on your mountain gorilla photography Uganda safari, expect to encounter dense forests, steep slopes etc. You may get distracted by objects such as tree branches, leaves, vines and more. Besides, some gorilla families prefer living in high elevation which means, you have to be physically fit to conquer the kind of terrain in order to get there.

Keep a distance of 8-10m- the standard measure to protect mountain gorillas from infected diseases. This should be observed not only during mountain gorilla photography but at all times while on search for these rare apes.

Gear & protective equipment- considering the nature of gorilla habitat, you must be fully prepared for anything. Firstly, don’t forget to come with rain jacket or rain coat/poncho in case of rain, good camera with rain-roof bag, extra batteries for the camera, waterproof hiking boots.

Position yourself well- mountain gorillas can change position and you will want to capture every bit of them, the face expression etc. Feel free to take as many shots as you to allow you choose your best for remembrance.

Telephoto zoom lens- finding mountain gorillas isn’t predictable. At times they move searching for what to feed on. This is why you need a good camera with telephoto lens for you to capture them even when they are found a bit far from you. Preferably, you may need 400mm lenses to help you capture the best shots regardless of your position from these apes.

By BigEyeUg Team

Sensational Ugandan musician Moses Ssali alias Bebe Cool has demeaned fellow singers Cindy Sanyu and King Saha’s capacities to serve in the President office of the Uganda Musicians’ Associations (UMA).

Cindy and King Saha who have officially registered as candidates for the UMA Presidential elections, were bashed by Bebe Cool during his interview with a group of journalists earlier this week.

Bebe Cool believes both Cindy Sanyu and King Saha do not deserve to be voted as the heads of the musicians’ associations.

Speaking about King Saha, Bebe Cool says the “Very Well” singer has often expressed on TV his pride in taking weed, hence not an appropriate leader for him (Bebe Cool).

As for me, I can never vote Saha to be the President of UMA. Saha is ever on TV clearly confessing to be a weed consumer. If its only those available to vote, then my option would be Cindy,” Bebe Cool said.

The Gagamel International CEO also took swipe at Cindy whom he says she failed to perform to fellow musicians’ expectations during her recent moments in office.

Cindy has been there and things have gone wrong…As for King Saha, his image is not befitting of a leader of the industry,” he added.

Cindy assumed the UMA Presidential office in February 2021 after Ykee Benda’s ‘willing’ departure.

Since then, the “Boom Party” singer has been at the whelm of musicians’ body with a mammoth of challenges hitting through her way.

Its still a devastating moment for Kampala and Masaka businessman, Emmanuel Kaweesa Lwasa after the Uganda Police Force unearthed and searched his house in Bulenga.

Earlier this week, news made arounds in all corners of the media alleging Lwasa to have been arrested by the Police on cases of forgery.

On Wednesday, April 6, 2022, Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed the reports.

According Luke Oweyesigire, Police arrested Mr. Lwasa on Monday, April 4, 2022 evening on accusations of forging gold mining documents.

Owesigire also noted that Mr. Lwasa was fetched from his office at Najja Shopping Centre, Najjanankumbi after he was alleged to have faked approval documents for transacting over 500Kg of gold.

He said that Lwasa forged signatures of the acting Director Geological survey and mines (Ag. D/GSM) Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development Mrs. Alaba Agnes and Ms. Grace Lajwe Principal Chemist Directorate of Geological survey and mines (DGSM).

This was unearthed from his fraudulent transactions generated from his two companies; Trans Equator Miners Ltd and Trade Pannel International Limited.

Mr. Lwasa was arrested on April, 4, 2022 at 1600hrs from his office at Najja Shopping Centre, Najjanankumbi for allegedly forging the signature of the acting  Director Geological survey and mines (Ag. Latest on our desk is that the Uganda Police Force on Wednesday evening loaded Lwasa on their vehicles and headed to his residence in Bulenga which they searched.

Its believed that the Police move was to establish more evidence pinning the tycoon to the cases he is being accused of.

Oweyesigire also revealed that this sparked verge after the Police Minerals Protection Unit (PMPU) intensive investigations over forgery of the signature of Mrs. Alaba Agnes.

Apart from Lwasa, the exercise has also seen several other suspects from different companies also highlighted inline of arrest.

MTN UG Hip-Hop Awards return for 6th edition

By Our Reporter

Following 5 years of successfully organising the MTN UG Hip-Hop awards, MTN has launched the sixth edition of the MTN UG Hip-Hop awards which promise to be superior to those before.

The 2022 Hip-Hop awards which will be held on Saturday, 28th May 2022 with the aim of recognizing accomplished hip-hop artists, will also uplift virgin talent through the MTN Pulse Cypher challenge.

According to Hellen Kirungi, the MTN Uganda youth segment manager, the MTN Pulse Cypher, which allows new and undiscovered talent to showcase their abilities in an online Hip-Hop rap battle has this year been elevated to another level. This year the winner of the MTN Pulse Cypher will take home
UGX2million, while the second and third walk away with UGX1.5million and UGX1million respectively.

To take part in the MTN Pulse Cypher and stand a chance to win the prize money, Pulsers are required to download the MTN Pulse Cypher beat from the MTN Pulse microsite, record a one-minute video of themselves rapping to the beat and then upload the video on Instagram or Twitter and tag MTN with the hashtag #MTNPulseCypher.

It is based on these submissions that judges will select the top 10 contenders who will face-off in the MTN Pulse studio to later inform the choice of the top 5 finalists whose videos will be shared online for voting by the public.

Organized by UG Hip-Hop Awards with support from MTN and co-sponsors including Mountain Dew and Magic TV, the MTN UG Hip-Hop awards seek to celebrate and amplify the growth of the hip-hop music industry which is predominantly comprised of the youth in Uganda.

In the same spirit of supporting Uganda’s Hip-Hop industry, MTN in 2020 sponsored the first televised rap battles that saw several rappers pitched against each other culminating into the discovery of new talent in the country.

On Thursday, MTN joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Health Day, as a reaffirmation of its commitment to support the health and well-being of communities in Uganda. World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7 April, which also doubles as the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organisation.

Over the last 5 years, MTN has invested UGX5.4billion in interventions aimed at improving the health sector in Uganda. The interventions largely focused on improving maternal health care, healthcare services for Persons with Disabilities, refugees, tackling mental health illness and easing accessibility to quality health care services in rural areas.

Some of these initiatives have included the renovation and furnishing of maternity wards in 8 health facilities such as Aroi HC III Arua, Cwero HC III Gulu, Amach HC IV Lira, Naboa HC III Budaka, Kigorobya HC III, Kijura HC III and Kamukira HC IV Kabale.

In the past three years, MTN equipped and refurbished 24 health facilities including health centre III and IVs across the country.

In an effort to support the large refugee settlements in Uganda, MTN in 2017 fulfilled UGX 1 billion pledge to the Office of the Prime Minister which saw the upgrade of 10 refugee serving hospitals in Uganda.

More recently, MTN supported Butabika Hospital through the construction of sanitary facilities in an effort to support delivery of health services at the mental health institution.

It is worth noting that MTN believes strongly in the power of collaboration to create meaningful impact; which is why over the years, the telecom has worked with the Ministry of Health, Red Cross, UNHCR, USAID and UNFPA to realise the success of its interventions.

Bryan Mbasa, the senior manager MTN Foundation said health of the people in the communities is something close to the heart of MTN’s business.

“Health is one of the key pillars of Corporate Social Investment for the MTN Foundation because at MTN, we believe that we are only as good as the communities we serve,” he noted.

2022 Planned projects

Mbasa also reaffirmed MTN’s commitment to investing in Uganda’s health sector with the aim of achieving SDG 3 which focuses on health and well-being noting that the MTN Foundation intends to commission even more impactful projects this year.

Key among the interventions MTN is undertaking this year, is the upgrade of Ibakwe health Centre II in Parolinya refugee settlement located in Moyo district and Bwizi health centre III in Western Uganda to mention but a few.
