MTN Uganda, in partnership with BBS Terefayina, has launched a bicycle racing competition amongst the 18 counties (Masaza) of Buganda.

By Our Reporter

Revival of bicycle racing competitions in Buganda is underway as MTN Uganda in partnership with Buganda-owned television; BBS Terefayina, has  relaunched the Kengere ya BBS ne MTN’ bicycle challenge scheduled for 5th and 6th February 2022.

The bicycle racing competition will encompass all the 18 counties (Masaza) of Buganda with the goal of promoting unity and strengthening culture in the kingdom.

The competition will draw participation of representatives from all the 18 counties of Buganda who gather in Buddu where the challenge will take place.

Each county (Ssaza) team will be selected by the cycling committee in consultation with the respective county sports committees from the various local competitions they organize.

Speaking during the launch held at the BBS Terefayina studios in Bulange Mengo, Ronald Muwaya the MTN Uganda Trade Marketing Coordinator said that MTN Uganda is honored to be involved in such a noble cause for it ties in directly with the telecom’s business pillar of togetherness.

“At MTN, we believe that the community is the bedrock of success in any society, hence our dedication to drive shared growth, unity and prosperity in all our partnerships. Today is no different. Kengere ya BBS ne MTN seeks to cultivate socio-economic development and transformation amongst the people of Buganda,” he said.

Kengere ya BBS ne MTN was earlier launched in May 2021 in commemoration of the five-year existence of BBS Terefayina, however, the competition was affected by the emergence of the Delta variant of the coronavirus which pushed the country into lockdown.

The Ppokino of Buddu, Owek. Jude Muleke lauded MTN’s efforts in strengthening relationships with the communities in which it operates noting that the bicycle challenge will bear fruit in breeding unity in the different counties of Buganda.

“For more than five years now, BBS Terefayina continues to provide quality services thanks in part to partnerships such as this one with MTN, which hinges on spurring socio-economic growth of the community. Through this partnership, we hope to entrench cultural roots in the people of Buganda to ensure fortitude of the kingdom,” he noted.

Previously held and relished as a social event in Buganda Kingdom, Bicycling commonly referred to as Obugaali became obsolete and was only revived in November 2020, following the creation of the Buganda Cycling Committee.

According to the Ppokino, Kengere ya BBS ne MTN challenge is a step in the right direction towards reviving the once vibrant sport in the kingdom.

MC JoeBy Our Reporter

The full reopening of the economy has breathed life into Uganda’s social scene that had been locked for two years due to the Corona virus pandemic.

As we await the return of concerts and bustle of nightlife, Kenya’s gospel artiste Johnson Mwaniki, popularly known as MC Joe has confirmed to this website that he will be in Kampala in February.

The 2014 GMA Awards Italy Best International Gospel Song nominee says he will be in Kampala to promote his first Extended Play that he is currently glossing over with his team.

The EP titled “Wakati wa Mungu”, loosely translated as “God’s time” boosts of a number of songs including a touch of the now trending Amapiano style from South Africa.

In the first single off the EP, “Hakuna”, a collaboration featuring Doty, MC Joe preaches about the vanity in escaping life situations through “fillers” like drugs, work, dangerous sports etc. In simple easily memorable lyrics, he sings about surrendering our burden to Jesus Christ.

The EP explores various themes in songs such as “Tunae” and the Amapiano inspired “What Agwan”.

MC Joe still remains tight lipped about the full details of the EP but the new songs so far released are a quite a drift from MC Joe earlier projects that were highly charged in dance, fast pace and hip hop.

“Wakati wa Mungu”, is a statement of growth as an artiste.

Students of Apeulai PEAS High School in Amuria District

By Our Reporter

Schools are finally re-opening. This follows the presidential address on New Year’s Eve, where he announced that schools would be reopening in January, but also emphasized the need to adhere to SOPs to avoid a surge in Covid-19 infections.

In line with mitigating the spread of coronavirus, MTN MoMo is providing a safe and convenient solution for school fees payment especially for the parents. The solution covers more than 5,000 schools and institutions across the country.

Stephen Mutana, acting Chief Executive Officer, MTN Mobile Money Uganda said using MTN MoMo, parents can pay for their children’s school fees conveniently and securely and receive a notification with a transaction ID to enable them reconcile with the schools.

“Through telecommunications solutions such as MoMo school fees payment, MTN is always looking to simplify and improve the lives of its customers. Parents can simply pay school fees for their children using their phones without enduring the long lines or even leaving their workplace to queue in line to make a payment,” he said noting that the mobile payment solution saves money that would otherwise have been used for transport.

“Travelling long distances to pay school fees is very challenging for parents who have 8am to 5pm jobs because some financial institutions close at 5pm in the evening. For those in the villages, travelling to the nearest financial institution could be very costly coupled with the waiting time in long queues. That is why the mobile money payment solution for school fees is very important for MTN because it makes the life of our customers easier, convenient, and cheaper in cost,” Mutana explained.

In addition to convenience, paying school fees through MoMo mitigates the spread of Covid-19 by preventing congestion of people as they wait in line to make payments.

Mobile Money also mitigates the exchange of cash between different parties, which was one of the ways highlighted as possible causes for transmission of the virus.

How to pay school fees using MTN MoMo

To pay school fees using MTN MoMo, simply dial *165*80# or use MyMTN app.

Enter the student number provided by the school. It will show you the student’s name and class plus outstanding balance.

Once you have confirmed the student details above, you can then enter the amount you want to pay and follow the remaining prompts.

At the end of the entire process, you will receive a text message confirming the success of the payment of school fees to the school.

Dancer Wembley talks about dance and how it helped in his transition

By Reporter

In the world of Ugandan contemporary dance, Moses Kyeyune, popularly known as Wembly Mo, surely needs no introduction. He has built his dance brand over the years through his eye-catching and carefully choreographed dance moves, video appearances as well as musical collaborations with titans such as French Montana, Swae Lee, Eddy Kenzo and Fik Fameica. He has been there, done it.
A new crop of dancers characterised by coloured braids has become a popular feature in recent music videos such as Pia Pounds’ Tupaate remix, Ykee Benda’s Obangaina and Fik Fameica’s Buligita. These dancers are from Wembly’s new initiative; a dance foundation.
When we visited the foundation’s premises, the seasoned dancer opened up about this new journey.

What moments led to you becoming a brand in Ugandan contemporary dance?

During 2017, before French Montana and Swae Lee came to do the Unforgettable video, I was asked to do the choreography alongside the Ghetto Kids. Long story short, the video happens, the song blows up and everyone knows that the Ghetto Kids were flown out to perform alongside French Montana and Swae Lee at the BETs that year. I didn’t take it personal but it hurt not being flown out as well yet I had been a huge part of the process.

How did you deal with that heartbreak?

At the time, I had been friends with Fik Fameica for a long time and he noticed that not being taken to the US had taken a toll on me. He told me to forget it, with a promise to make me a song that would get me my own BET. I took it as a mere consolation. Within no time, we were at Artin’s studio and it is then that we made and dropped Kakima. The song and the dance moves helped my brand get bigger. I started getting endorsement deals from telecommunication companies.
The following year, I dropped Sconto, again with Fik. That was it. I started getting solid recognition as Wembly Mo, the awesome dancer.

When did you decide to start this dance foundation?
So, while preparing for Kakima, Frank Jah came up with a concept that required very many dancers. In a quest to find dancers, I made a call on social media. I was overwhelmed by the love shown to me through the feedback. We told the dancers to come to Jah Live and the numbers were overwhelming. I had never felt so much love before. We switched venues a couple of times but the dancers kept investing personal effort to make it to the venue.
When I got to interact with the dancers, I realised that they all had dreams of making it to the big stage. They all wanted opportunities to dance for Eddy Kenzo, Fik Fameica and many other superstars in the game, just like I had done before. They were undergoing the same challenges I had faced before because in Uganda, very few dancers are accorded opportunity to express themselves.
It is then that I told them that we must dance together. I told them that we shall have a meeting and something big would be birthed out of it. It was initially a project that I called “Dance with Wembley Mo”.

How did the project morph into a foundation?

After doing Sconto, I realised that the cause needed to be bigger. I was still working with dancers, most of them young and burning with ambition. Parents as well were calling me day and night to get their children into the project. I sought counsel and that is when a friend advised on the concept of a foundation. I got to learn that a foundation in an NGO is a board that governs small groups. I was advised to switch the name from a project because a project ends while a foundation lives on forever. All the videos I shot, I always had hundreds of young dancers who not only wanted to appear in the video, but to make it as well.

Did you welcome them all?
I don’t believe in sending people away. My arms are always open to anyone as long as they have the zeal and desire to be a part of something. While shooting Sconto, I had a concept of using close to 250 dancers, but the number of people that showed up were more than the required number. I had to leave some behind and they cried. I cried as well.

How did Sconto turn out?
Like I told you earlier on, it was a major win for me and Fik. The first time we had to shoot the video, it rained and we had to postpone. That is why I encourage young people to be persistent in whatever they got their eyes on. It takes a lot of persistence.
Sconto meant a lot to me because directors never wanted to cast a huge number of dancers in videos before, usually two boys and a girl or vice versa. The video sort of proved a point that even with hundreds of dancers expressing themselves on one set, the video could still be ballistic. In a way, I was asking for dancers to be accorded more opportunity. In every song or video I do, my number one priority is to accord opportunity to other dancers, represent and expose the foundation further.

What is the relationship between dancers and artistes?
Dancers do not sing. We do not have the ability to put out the sounds to which we dance. It is the artistes that make these sounds and facilitate the videos in which we showcase our talent. This is where I come in, because not everyone is accorded opportunity by artistes. They usually look for the most popular, for example, a Wembley Mo, an EdWizzy or Ronnie Stamina. I have put in the work to be accorded opportunities but that is not the end of it all. The onus is upon me now to propel others to greater heights.

When did the foundation get its premises?
When Covid-19 struck, it helped me put a lot of things in perspective. I already had dancers I was mentoring. Some did not even have where to stay. I gave up my house to facilitate their accommodation. The foundation has about 300 dancers but I accommodate 56 as it is what I can handle for now since I need to feed them and provide other basic needs. What I can confirm though is that I get a new application every day and I never say no.

Are you confident that your efforts are equivalently paying off?
My goal is for all individuals to play at the highest level possible. The fact that we are doing some of the best videos with the top artistes is evidence enough. We just did the remix for the party anthem of the year, Tupaate, with Pia Pounds. You have seen the projects we have done with Fik, Ykee, among many others. I am not yet satisfied but I am confident we are sailing in the right direction.

When you close your eyes, what do you envision for this initiative?
To begin with, the biggest desire for all these dancers is to get platforms and opportunities for them to showcase whatever skills they are honing. I want this foundation to be able to create its own opportunities. I have a dream of owning an arena in which the foundation can stage its own dance concerts so that dancers with ambition do not have to go through a lot to showcase their potential.

When you arrive at the destination, never forget where the journey began. You need to thank God because you could be fighting battles, but fighting for your life is not one of them.

This is a reality tale that Ugandan songstress, Sheebah Karungi would have to share especially after turning to God.

Now and moving forward, God will be the author and proprietor of Sheebah’s life.

This was confirmed by Sheebah herself via her social media platforms on Tuesday.

It follows her heart’s conviction of not showcasing the Lord, who has often cherished and blessed her in her entire journey.

God has always been above ALL for me, but I have never showcased that in my work. I am now on the biggest Chapter of my life and I want to put God first in all that I do moving forward,” stated Sheebah Karungi.

The multi-award-winning artist has gone ahead and recorded a song titled “Mukama Yamba” which she describes to be personal to her, depicting her feelings towards God.

This song is very personal to me & symbolizes a lot that I feel,” Sheebah added.

Sheebah’s has since taken the public by a surprise with her move.

This comes in after almost a month ever since she parted-ways with her 9-years old Team No Sleep management headed by legendary talent manager, Geofrey Kiwanuka alias Jeff Kiwa.

It’s a sorrowful moment for Ugandans after one of its top female rappers, Keko reappearing in a dreadful condition.

Keko appeared in an Instagram live video on Monday evening in a sorry state after almost two years without making it in public.

In the live video recorded in Canada where she currently lives, Keko’s health seemed struggling as her skin was snowy and lips blurred.

Apparently, her mind is destabilized especially after sighting some odd acts from her in the video.

The “How we do it” crooner also proved married to booze and cigarettes as she flowed with them throughout the entire video, leaving the public puzzled.

Majority of her current and former close friends are clinging to drug addiction as the supreme cause of her worsened condition explained in the video on Instagram.

Keko relocated from Uganda to South Africa in September, 2012 after signing a multi-album and full management deal with Sony Music Entertainment Africa and ROCKSTAR4000.

She joined a global roster of artists on Sony’s RCA label that includes artists by then such as Alicia Keys, P!nk, Usher, Christina Aguilera, Pitbull and Chris Brown.

Keko last interacted with the public when she opened up on her rape scenario in 2019 on her graduation day.

In 2020, Keko shocked with a phenomenal nod for Best Female Rap Act category at the 2020 AFRIMMA awards despite having a prolonged music spell.

About Keko:

Keko, born Jocelyne Tracey Keko, rose to fame in 2010 with the release of “Fallen Heroes”, where she appeared alongside other established Ugandan artists like Don MC, SP, DAVIS and the Mwanba children choir.

After delivering what was arguably the best verse on the track, Keko began to turn heads with her lyrics, delivery style and sheer presence on tracks.

Her breakthrough single ‘How We Do It’ took the Ugandan music charts by storm, making her an instant household name in East Africa.

The success of the track led to a 2011 Channel O Video Music Award for most gifted East African Video, and more recently a synch with Supersport Africa.

Keko landed an endorsement deal with Pepsi and also led Mountain Dew’s advertising campaign in Uganda, all whilst growing her fan base across the continent.

Fellow Ugandan artists and fans continue in an empathetic mood as they rally to save her in any way they would.

Yesterday Wednesday, January 12, 2022 marked 3 years ever since NTV Uganda’s Andrew Kabuura and wife Flavia Tumusiime walked down the aisle.

The charming – media lovebirds’ marriage vows on Saturday, January 12, 2019, were presided over by Bishop Zac Niringiye at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero, and witnessed by both family and friends.

Andrew and Flavia thereafter treated their guests to a lavish reception at the 5-Star Kampala Serena Hotel, at an event graced by that had fabled names in the country.

Prior to the dreamful moment, Flavia introduced Kabuura to her ancestral home in Kiruhuura district on Saturday, November 17, 2018.

With this relationship milestone, Flavia and Andrew froze the hearts of men and women who had all along crushed on them.

Since then, the couple has been a phenomenal spotlight for the public especially with a number of successes going their way like welcoming their first baby.

However, like any other marriage, Kabuura and Flavia’s has been hit with severe turbulences like adultery.

Their most recent trial was last year when Kabuura was reported in a scandal with another married woman, a one Mercy Twinomujuni, a moment that proved the most disastrous in their lives.

Nevertheless, Flavia and Andrew seem to have diluted the saga and recovered their initial jovial intimacy.

This follows their move on Wednesday evening as they got relieved of the past and decided to have a moment to host their third marriage anniversary celebrations.

They were accompanied by a few of their close friends as they made full use of the romantic dinner prepared for them, a move that has since sent social media in-laws with bubbling words in their mouths.

Happy 3rd marriage anniversary to the Kabuuras!

Dr. Hajat Kulthum Nabunya Muzaata, the wife to the Late Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Batte has cried foul of the press for causing discomfort in her new relationship with Akram Gumisiriza.

Appearing on a local TV interview earlier this week, Hajat Kulthum cited pressure from the media as the spark for her new husband Akram Gumisiriza’s untimely departure from Uganda back to his work abroad.

Hajat Kulthum revealed that husband Akram’s initial plan was to stay for another one month but it was ruined by paparazzi (Media) not giving them privacy.

The unnecessary attention by the press is what forced my husband to to leave prematurely. His initial plan was to leave a month later but with the media following us everywhere we go including where we eat from, I told him “Honey you can return to work,” Hajjat Kulthum:

Sheikh Muzaata, a Muslim leader heading Imams in Uganda, head of Dawa in Uganda, Arabic teacher, Islamic religion teacher, marriage teacher and councillor died on December, 4 2020 at IHK where he had been admitted for several weeks.

Hajat Kulthum is one of the widows to the Late Sheikh Muzaata and had one child together by the time he passed on.

In December 2020, Hajjat Kulthum introduced Akram Gumisiriza to her parents, a move that a mammoth of social media in-laws have criticized.

However, Hajjat Kulthum and Akram have proved unbothered by critics after all in Islam, a widow is given four months and ten days to mourn her husband before she can remarry.

We will keep you posted
