DJs vow to remain loyal to Ugandan music

By Stuart G-Khast

More than ever, Ugandan DJs have pledged to give Ugandan music airplay a percentage higher than they ever have. Previously, DJs and artistes have had arguments on how much Ugandan music should be played with DJs arguing that foreign music has always been more appealing to their audience.

In a snap of a finger, DJs agree with artistes that Ugandan music deserves not just priority but also a higher percentage than 60% that has been in rotation. However, this has not come easy.

Recently the pandemic has left many artistes and DJs locked indoor with no opportunity to work and artistes have used the opportunity to mend relationship with DJs. Because they know DJs are not in their usual music booths commanding which song suites which BPM, artistes have rushed to give them money and food in form of extending friendship and the usually amendable DJs have been drawn to the side than spontaneously thinks Ugandan music should get more airplay.

DJs all over Uganda unanimously can not wait for the lockdown last day to loud play Ugandan music at their respective work stations now. Artistes now wonder why it took them long to realise there was a trigger to this. We are happy to realise this development, everyone else is, at least in Uganda.

Wim Van Helleputte, the MTN CEO, addresses guests.

By Our Reporter

MTN Uganda has continued its long-standing relationship with the Muslim community in Uganda by joining them again this year to commemorate the holy month of Ramadan.

This year, the holy month starts at a challenging time when the whole world is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic which has affected the livelihoods of many.

“First of all, we would like to congratulate the Muslim community upon reaching this fasting season. We have always joined them in celebrating the fasting period. This time round, it falls at a very difficult time due to COVID-19, giving us even more reason to stand with them,” said Wim Vanhelleputte, MTN Uganda CEO.

MTN will continue supporting the national effort by supporting the Muslim community with food items and alms worth UGX 100 million throughout the fasting period. These alms will be delivered daily under the guidance of the National Task Force Against COVID-19 to various communities that need this relief, more so during this fasting period.

The food items/alms that include sugar, rice, posho, cooking oil, beans, bar soap for handwashing and wheat flour will be distributed to the vulnerable communities especially in the areas of Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono district. MTN will be working with Salaam TV/Foundation to reach out to the different communities during the fasting period.

“During this period, we know that our Muslim brothers and sisters would like to stay in touch as they conduct prayers but cannot congregate. We are therefore launching the MTNite Calls promotional offer that will allow them to share in prayer particularly at night during Ramadhan,” Vanhelleputte added.

Alongside the food and alms, MTN has also launched a promotional offer which will automatically give customers 60minutes of talk every night, when they load airtime or buy a voice/data bundle (using MTN MoMo or through an agent) worth UGX 500/- or more during the day. The 60 minutes are however free. This promotional offer will end with the holy month of Ramadhan and is also open to all MTN customers.

“Alongside that, we shall also provide food and other alms to help during the fasting season. This year, our motivation to support those fasting, but in need, has been further increased because of the effects of the COVID pandemic on livelihoods. We wish them a peaceful Ramadan season,” he concluded.

Fasting during the holy month is one of the five pillars of Islam, which also include prayer and charity.

Tribert Rujugiro Ayabatwa’s Corporate Social Responsibility Are Paying Off in Northern Uganda

$

Tribert Rujugiro Ayabatwa’s approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Northern Uganda continues to empower communities to uplift themselves. Ayabatwa’s CSR in this case is based on food security, income-generation, afforestation and access to clean water.

1. FOOD SECURITY

Ayabatwa’s company based in Northern Uganda established the Arua Organic Agricultural Centre (AOAC) which demonstrates to communities best practices in food production.

Crucially, AOAC teaches farmers continuous farming even where rains are scarce. Solar-powered irrigation is now operational, which permits the growing of over 15 different food crops.

A key aspect is to keep these crops well mulched helping the soil to retain more moisture, keeping the temperature low and increasing the soil fertility.

Overall, encouraging and supporting farmers not only to improve food security but also to generate incomes is central. For example, a small farm can produce more than required to sustain a family. By adopting good agricultural practices farmers produce excess food thereby helping to improve Uganda’s food security.

2. INCOME-GENERATION

Farmers are continuously sensitized to expand their income portfolio and not depend only on cash crops. These are several initiatives in this regard. In the case of bee-keeping, 9 apiaries were installed in all regions where farmers learn best practices in bee-keeping. Second, farmers are assisted to grow their own mini forests. A small forest can produce enough wood for domestic consumption and provide extra income every year by selling construction material and charcoal.

3. AFFORESTATION

In the area of afforestation, 2.4 tree seedlings per year are given to farmers free of charge. Farmers are taught that tree planting goes together with cash crop growing. Tobacco. Native tree species and fruit trees are supplied to the farming communities.

4. PROVIDING CLEAN WATER SOURCES TO COMMUNITIES

Shallow wells are constructed for communities – providing clean water access to over 15,000 people in the Arua region. This also ensures that children don’t travel long distances to fetch water from rivers thereby undermining their education and their future.

Tribert Rujugiro Ayabatwa and his companies remain fully committed to the CSR path they have practiced over the years, namely, giving a hand to local communities as they lift themselves from poverty.

Many of us know the benefits of regular exercise but have either been lazy to start working out, or too busy. The good news is that Sanyuka TV, one of the most-watched Luganda channels on the StarTimes platform, now gives you the opportunity to start your workout plan or continue your workouts on a daily basis.

In a daily show hosted by famous kickboxer, Moses Golola, viewers are now participating in workouts, a power challenge, and diet tips, all geared towards a healthier life.

The show, dubbed “Kakole ne Golola,” features celebrities, CEOs, and other high-profile personalities who join Golola daily for workout sessions via remote conferencing service, Zoom. The show runs from 6:30am to 7am every day for the duration of the lockdown period.

The lockdown period had previously seen many Ugandans swarm the roads for evening jogs, something that was strongly condemned by health professionals and President Museveni because it violated social distancing principles. Museveni went on to encourage Ugandans to work out in their homes, even releasing his own home workout video. Golola’s workout show on Sanyuka TV now comes to guide Ugandans through this.

“Kakole ne Golola” is only the latest addition to an already great lineup of Sanyuka Tv programming, which is primarily sport and entertainment program. Shows such as Big Deal (Ssenga Nantume & Leila Kachapizo), Music Taxi (Mukunja & Aliyah) Uncut (Zahara Totto & Ozie), Morning Express (Hatma Naluggwa Ssekaya, Kays and Brian Wako), The Wardrobe (Irene Naava), Lunchtime Sports (Baker Kigogo, Michael Kigozi & Solomon Ssaka), Endiba Yaffe (Pius Serugo, Martin Kaddu & Joel Muyita), The Bench (Baker Kigongo), among others, are part of their exciting lineup.

Sanyuka TV are also the official broadcasters of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, as supported by MTN.

“Kakole ne Golola” is yet another special package that Next Media have put together in line with the COVID-19 lockdown in Uganda, along with the daily 4:30pm special COVID-19 news updates, as well as the restructured weekend late-night party shows; Katch Up (Friday), Saturday Night Live (Saturday) and Late Chat (Sunday), further re-emphasizing their stature at the top.

Airtel Uganda has announced a contribution of 1.25 Billion Uganda shillings to the Ministry of Health in Uganda, primarily to support health workers on the frontline in the battle against COVID-19.

By Our Reporter

As the number of cases positive with Coronavirus (COVID-19) increase daily, health workers continue to fight the outbreak on the front lines and this puts them at risk of contracting the virus due to their close proximity to the most severe cases. Without an influx of urgently needed protective equipment, more healthcare workers may fall ill, reducing the availability of care for patients.

It is from this background that Airtel Uganda is contributing Ugx 1.25 Billion to the Ministry of Health in Uganda, primarily to support health workers on the front line in the battle against COVID-19.

Commenting about the significant contribution, Mr. V.G. Somasekhar, the Airtel Uganda Managing Director said; “Today, we announce our additional support for Uganda’s COVID-19 response through a contribution of 1.25 billion Uganda shillings, primarily focused on supporting our frontline health workers. Now more than ever, we all need to apply our capabilities to the needs of nurses, doctors, midwives and community health workers. At this moment of crisis, no country can cope with what they need alone. The private sector needs to mobilize resources, alongside National Governments, to fight the raging pandemic.”

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Health, the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng noted that, “this is an important partnership with Airtel in Uganda and demonstrates a real commitment to support our health workers who are battling day after day to defeat this pandemic. As individuals, members of the public should strictly follow the key hygiene measures and social distancing, to help flatten the curve of the epidemic, avoid overwhelming hospitals, and preserve access to healthcare.”

Airtel has already taken several steps to help mitigate the impact of the Coronavirus outbreak such as zero-rating the website for Ministry of Health, World Health Organization and many other websites where the public can access information from relevant authorities on the pandemic as well as education websites to enable students get free access to education materials while at home.
