Development Channel boosts Uganda’s Movie Industry

Uganda’s movie industry still lags behind despite the number of local talent in Uganda. Despite all this great talent in the movie industry, there is lack of audience and investment to the film industry in the country unlike developed countries like the United States of America. It is because of this that Development Channel decided to boost the movie industry in the country. Development Channel provides the movie industry with the latest version of black magic. Only 4 of URASA Min Pro Black-magic 4.6k are in the country and 2 of those 4 have been provided by Development Channel to the movie industry.

In the words of former USA President Barak Obama, when America was founded as a new country, the Founding Fathers wanted to base the foundations of the country off of ideals. .The ideals made the country and the people thrive to become the World’s most powerful nation. These ideals were instilled through the movie industry in America. Hollywood grew to shape the collective thoughts and the ideas of the nation and the world at large.

It is through the same spirit that Development Channel has handed over 2 state of the art cameras to renowned award winning actors Mathew Nabwiso and Eleanor Nabwiso. Development Channel has also gone ahead to invite Nollywood’s famous acting duo “Aki and Pawpaw” to work with the budding movie industry in Uganda.

During the handover at Development Channel’s Corporate Office, the Chairman, Charles N. Lambert explained that it is high time that we created a “new nation” and this nation must be a United Africa where the next generation must higher its sights. Africa’s economy has been badly weakened for far too long and that has been a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Chairman Development Channel showed that the challenges Africa faces are real, serious and are many but we believe that with the empowerment of the film industry, Uganda and Africa is a step closer to becoming a new nation under the new ideals.

In reaffirming the greatness of Africa, we understand that greatness is never given, it must be earned. That is why Development Channel is taking the lead in earning this greatness through the Economic War.

By Our Reporter

Young stars, Abigail Joyce, 7, and Alvan Jeriel, 9, are set to hold a concert to raise awareness about cancer in children. Abigail is a singer while Alvan is a pianist.

Dubbed “Cancer Charity Concert”, it was officially announced on Thursday at a press briefing held at the Uganda Cancer Institute, Mulago hospital. Speaking to media, the young stars revealed that they composed a cancer song to commiserate with cancer patients after they visited them in hospital and saw their pain, and that is how the idea of a charity concert came about.

“We had a friend who was diagnosed with cancer and taken to India for treatment. She recovered fully, and when she returned we came with her to visit cancer patients at Mulago hospital. When we saw the other patients and what they were going through, we were very touched and decided to compose a song titled ‘Cancer’ that we hoped would offer them some comfort.” They explained.

They also revealed that all proceeds from the concert will go towards helping children with cancer at the Uganda Cancer Institute.

Dr Joyce Balagadde Kambugu, the head of Paediatric Oncology Services at Uganda Cancer Institute, appreciated the move, noting that one of the big barriers to fighting cancer in children is lack of awareness among the masses and that such an inititiative is one of the ways to tackle it.

“We are grateful to have these youngsters holding a concert to raise awareness about cancer in children because one of our challenges is late presentation of children with cancer,” she stated. “Our registry estimates that 7,000 children develop cancer every year. And every year UCI receives a rising number of children with cancer.”

“While cancer in children is not preventable, if detected early and well diagnosed it can be cured. 80% of children are expected to get well if diagnosed in time.” She added.

The “Cancer Charity Concert” is slated for September 2nd at the Kampala Serena hotel. Abigail and Alvan will be joined by other artistes including Levixone and Exodus among others.

Northern Uganda’s Jenneth Prischa has released a new single titled “Corruption Anthem” in which she points out some of the things that have hindered growth of our country.

“It takes huge courage to sing about human rights related issues in a country like Uganda where majority of the accomplished artists are simply focused on making money to survive thereby avoiding serious issues,” Prischa said.

Speaking about the contentious OTT/social media tax, she noted that paying it would not be an issue if only taxes were always being put to the right causes like giving a boost to the crippled education and health sector.

MTN Foundation donates equipment to Arua’s Oriajin Hospital

MTN Uganda Foundation has donated hospital equipment to Oriajin Hospital based in Arua as part of its Access to Health Care initiative project. The donation will benefit hundreds of patients from the West Nile region and neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo who frequent one of Northern Uganda’s busiest public hospitals.

During the handover ceremony, the 20 hospital beds, 20 hospital mattresses, 20 hospital blankets and 20 mosquito nets were received by officials from Orijuan Hospital.

The handover is part of various corporate social responsibility efforts MTN Uganda has carried out through the MTN Uganda Foundation. MTN Foundations UGX 500m Access to Health Initiative CSR project aims to impact needy hospitals across the country.

Speaking at the event, MTN Uganda’s Senior Manager Corporate Affairs, Ms. Justina Ntabgoba was delighted with the work done by Oriajin Hospital in provision of quality health care in Arua since its inception in 1984.

“We are happy to see that Oriajin Hospital is playing a huge role in the delivery of health and medical services to thousands of people in the West Nile region. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), ‘good health and well-being’ which targets ‘access to quality essential health-care services’ is an essential part of the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Ms. Ntabgoba. “This donation is our way of encouraging the management and staff of Orijuan Hospital that your work is very important; you touch lives every day and may our contribution today be a boost to your work.”

MTN Uganda Foundation Manager Mr. Bryan Mbaasa said that the donation was a small gesture in appreciation of this hard work with the hope that more lives will be impacted.

“Our CSR programme Access to Health Initiative aims at providing hospital equipment to various needy but strategic hospitals across Uganda such as Orijuan Hospital. Access to Health Initiative was built on the premise that access to hospital equipment is essential in ensuring quality healthcare for Ugandans,” he said.

On hand from MTN Uganda was the MTN Foundation staff including its Portfolio Manager Mr. Nelson Munyanda accompanied by regional staff of the telecom company led bby the RBM James Ndyamuhaki. MTN Foundation was impressed by the level of commitment by the management and staff of Orijuan Hospital.

According to a 2012 report from Human Rights Network Uganda (HURINET-U) on the state of regional referral hospitals in Uganda, most facilities and equipment in these hospitals countrywide are in a state of disrepair. Bed capacity in hospitals and health centers is still low resulting into overcrowding and poor quality care of inpatients.

Arua District Health Officer Dr. Anguzu was represented by Medicines and Supplies Inventory Manager, Margaret Bayoru as the Chief Guest. Dr. Bayoru noted that MTN’s donation was timely and the first in the region. “MTN’s donation will undoubtedly boost service delivery at Oriajin and the community. As you may have noticed, we have been grappling with poor facilities to host our patients and doctors’ accommodation for a long while now. The level of morale has been noticeably low in the past, but this is starting to look up now. If it is not too much to ask, consider improving transportation in the area by donating an ambulance to this community.”

Dr. Bayoru decried the dependence of the residents on traditional healers and encouraged them all to adopt proactive health seeking behavior at the established hospitals. She pledged the District’s support to all donors.

The MTN Foundation Access to Health Initiative is a UGX 500m support program aimed at improving the quality of health care in Uganda. This is in line with Goal 3 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals that aims to achieve “Good Health and Well-Being” for all.

The MTN Uganda Foundation Access to Health Initiative (AHI) will see 500 hospital beds, 500 mattresses, 500 blankets and 500 nets be given out to hospitals around the country through the Ministry of Health. At the moment, 230 beds, mattresses, blankets and nets have been delivered so far. The next hospital that will benefit from MTN Uganda’s Foundation Access to Health Initiative will be the Uganda Military Police Health Unit in Makindye, Central
Region of Uganda.

Days after Peter came out to give conditions for their re-union, we saw a glimmer of hope that maybe Paul would adhere to his brother’s request and show respect to his family but that did not happen.

You might as well say, we are far from seeing that re-union. During an interview, Paul said that “the way you people are lost about this issue is the same way I am seeing the issue too”

“Just understand this, it Is not good for me, it is not good for anybody”

While Paul seems to distance himself from the drama,Peter is on the other hand, ready totell whoever cares to know, that he still has a feud with his twin brother.
