Unheard movie

By Our Reporter

Ugandan film, “Unheard” is set to take over the international stage when it screens at the upcoming Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) in Ghana.

The Rukiga dialect film about a young mother’s defiant campaign for justice and equality in a rural fishing community will compete for the coveted Best African Film award at the ninth edition of the prestigious film showcase to be held in Accra from September 17-22.

Reacting to news of his film’s selection and nomination, scriptwriter and producer Polly Kamukama said it was an honour to have a Ugandan film recognized on a global platform.

“We are thrilled to be the only feature film from East Africa that’s going to be showcased at BSIFF 2024. It’s a nod to the collective passion and dedication that went into making this film, and the entire cast and crew is looking forward to meeting our west African audiences,” said Kamukama.

A pioneer beneficiary of the Content Development Support Programme (CDSP), a government film grant that seeks to support the production of outstanding Ugandan stories, Unheard has enjoyed an impressive run since debuting in Kampala in October 2023.

Directed by Joseph Ssebaggala and starring Jackline Katusiime in the lead role, the film has been praised for its unique storytelling approach, stellar performances from a largely non-professional cast, alluring sceneries and strong social themes.

In March 2024, it emerged as the biggest winner at the second edition of the iKon awards in Kampala, taking home a total of seven accolades including for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress.

It has since premiered to rave reception in Kenya and South Africa, and is currently lined up to screen at a number of international film festivals in America, U.K, Russia, Brazil, Netherlands, Nigeria and Burkina Faso among others.

Kamukama is hopeful that the film’s upcoming stop at BSIFF, a film festival famed for its huge attendances and strong international collaborations, will boast its chances of securing a much-needed international distribution deal.

Shakib Cham has opened up about the challenges he’s facing in his marriage with socialite Zari Hassan, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect.

Shakib revealed that he initially believed their love was strong, but he soon realized that respect was missing from their relationship.

The mistake I made was thinking that the love is mutual. No marriage can last long without respect.

Despite the fame that came with being Zari’s husband, Shakib expressed that he hasn’t gained much from the marriage. Instead, he feels disrespected by her actions and comments, which he believes disregard his mental health and emotions.

Shakib had asked her not to share such content (of Zari and Diamond Platnumz) online, as it could be used to mock him. He even pointed out that Ugandan singer Rema Namakula has never disrespected her current husband, Hamza, despite co-parenting with her ex, Eddy Kenzo.

Shakib noted that the situation worsened after these videos were posted online. Feeling frustrated, he chose to ignore Zari’s calls, leading her to accuse him publicly of being “less of a man” and not contributing to their relationship.

The two exchanged playful banter, with Mayinja humorously bringing up the recent controversy involving Nambwayo and her baby daddy, Suuna Ben.

Taking on the role of an impromptu journalist, Mayinja quizzed Nambwayo, who admitted to being shy.

The conversation took a more personal turn when Mayinja asked Nambwayo to comment on the saga that had thrust her into the spotlight. However, Nambwayo chose to laugh off the question and declined to respond.

Mayinja didn’t shy away from offering advice during their exchange. He praised Nambwayo as a woman who helps build a man and urged her to stay with Suuna Ben, noting that anger can always fade, leaving room for reconciliation.

He also thanked her for protecting the family home, pointing out that the recent revelations about the land title have safeguarded the property from being sold.

The highlight of their interaction came when Nambwayo referred to the house as “our house,” a term that Mayinja particularly appreciated.

Kusasira expressed her gratitude for the successful procedure but also opened up about the personal challenges she faced during the recovery process, particularly the loss of several close friendships.

Kusasira’s surgery, which took place abroad, was marred by financial difficulties from the beginning.
