Harriet Atieno 28 years of age shares how her husband used to beat her each day but she found no reason to leave the marriage. Earlier last year, NRG Radio Uganda, a fresh face in the Ugandan radio scene, launched the NRGETIC MVPs campaign. This initiative aimed to discover talented individuals to become the next radio king or queen, social media manager, content creator, and in-house DJ at NRG. The campaign, much like this year’s BEAST MVP, saw over 100 people shortlisted for auditions. From the finale, winners emerged, including Christine Ekakoro (a.k.a. Eka) and Ishaque Nsubuga (a.k.a. Big Boy Shaque) as radio hosts. Also victorious were DJs Beats and Robin Kist, along with social media gurus Deliverance Kutosi and Drek Mugume.

As this year’s campaign heats up, proving to be highly competitive, we want to profile the past winners in news series dubbed From NRGETIC MVPs to BEAST MVPs. They will share their experiences from the previous contest, their journey joining NRG Radio, and offer tips to this year’s participants. In this series first installment, we feature Big Boy Shaque.

Ishaque currently hosts the #NRGBreakfastShowUG on NRG Radio alongside the top NRG MVP Radio Queen, Eka, and the celebrated Prim Asiimwe. His passion for radio ignited in 2020 when he joined the Media Challenge Initiative to work on their online MCI Radio. It was there he learned of the #NRGeticMVPs contest and emerged a winner.

Reflecting on his experience, Ishaque recalls, “I was hesitant about auditioning for the NRGetic MVPs experience in 2023, suspecting it might be another scam like many others in Kampala. I submitted my video at the last minute, just to try, and it turned out to be the best decision of my year. It transformed my career.”

He adds that when he first walked into NRG Radio, he knew he had to give it his all. “The auditions were challenging, with many talented and well-known contestants. But by being true to myself, I managed to win the Radio King category.” This win later became his biggest achievement of 2023.

Why NRG for Ishaque? The flamboyant host explains that the job at NRG Radio felt like a perfect fit for his identity and exceeded all his expectations. The team at NRG, he says, is vibrant and respectful. “Working alongside Prim Asiimwe, who has been in the industry for a while, is a privilege. I learn so much from her every day. My fellow winners from the MVPs experience, Eka and DJ Beats, have become like family.”

As for the show itself, being part of the NRG Breakfast Club is an incredible experience for Ishaque. He loves “how we connect with our listeners every morning, entertaining and engaging with them as they start their day. It’s amazing to be part of their routine and bring energy and joy to their mornings.”

Ugandan Gospel minister Prophet Elvis Mbonye, foretold another event that has come to fruition this year. He accurately foretold the nomination of Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s vice-presidential candidate, a significant event in US political history.

On January 7th, 2020, Mbonye shared his prophecy, telling a congregation that he saw a feminine presence as a major influence in the Democratic Party.

“While in prayer, I saw something in the US which baffled me. It was about the Democratic party,” he said.

“While I know that Biden is the person who leads that party, I felt something strange… a feminine presence that was the main influence over that party and it was not Hillary Clinton. When it unfolds, we shall see what it is all about.”

At that time, Kamala Harris had not yet been picked by Joe Biden as his running mate, and neither had Biden earned the nomination as the Democratic Party flag bearer ahead of the 2020 presidential elections. 

On August 11, 2020, Joe Biden announced Harris as his vice-presidential running mate. 

This week, Harris addressed her first rally after clenching more than enough support from delegates to make her the defactopresidential candidate of the left-wing party.

This followed President Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race last week.

Prophet Elvis Mbonye’s accurate prediction about Harris is not an isolated event. Mbonye has made several other prophecies that have garnered attention for their accuracy.

A luhya man, Austine Wekesa from Lung’anyiro, Kakamega reveals how his life was like small hell since his father died at nine years of age. He claimed that he has never seen his mother, that his mother died while giving birth to him. He says, “my father was forced to marry another woman, who is my step mother so that she could raise me up.” Austine further disclosed how his step mom could deny him food while his father was away for work. She could sometimes chase him out of the house at night. Austine said,”I was even afraid of opening up to my father because I feared what my step mother could do to me.”

He said he could sometimes get help from the school when hungry since he was a bright pupil. While in standard four, his father died and was left him behind with his step mom. Austine just knew it was the end for him. His step mother continued being tough and cruel but continued to persevere. He finished his primary school education and by the grace he was lucky to get sponsorship from his primary teachers to join a national school for his secondary education. That is when his life became even more difficult. He found himself doing weird things i.e. impregnated three form one students in his first term, an act that was warned by his entire teachers and swore he won’t repeat the same mistake.

While in form two he also impregnated three school girls, and as a result he was expelled from the school. He went back to the village hoping to change but as usual he found himself in a big problem as he impregnated four girls from the same village and same community that he comes from, some of whom were his relatives. The villagers ganged up and beat him up seriously but was saved by the passers-by, Austine was threatened to be killed, this made him to be scared and decided to look for help from various people so that he could leave the habit without success.

Felix mwenye umri wa miaka thelathini na mmoja na Bridgit mwenye miaka ishirini na sita ni wanandoa ambao walioana miaka minne iliyopita. Wawili hao walijaaliwa kumpata mtoto mmoja wa kike kabla hawajoana rasmi. Juma lililopita, mambo yalichacha na kuchemka baada ya Felix kujitokeza waziwazi kwa kuyaweka paruwanza mambo yaliyomsibu. “Tukiwa tunachumbiana nilimpachika mimba Bridgit mimba hali iliyonilazimu kumuoa baada ya shinikizo kutoka kwa wazazi wake,”Felix alifichua. Siku mbili baadae Bridgit alirejea nyumbani kwa Felix usiku na hakuweza kuomba radhi kwa yale alokua ametenda dhidi ya mumewe. Felix hakuwa tayari kwa mazungumzo ya aina yoyote baina yake na Bridgit maana alikuwa amekwisha kata kauli ya kumpa talaka Bridgit. Wakiwa mumo humo kwenye nyumba Bridgit alichemsha mafuta ya kupika ili amuangamize Felix kwa kumwagia usoni, ghafla baada Felix kung’amua hilo alimshika na kumnyan’anya mafuta hayo. Baadae akachukua kisu ili amdunge Felix, hapo ilimlazimu Felix kutoka nje mbio usiku huo akiwa amevalia bukta tu asijue ni wapi pa kuenda. Kwa masitikiko Felix alinipigia simu kunieleza hakuwa na mahali pa kulala. Nilimuita kwangu usiku huo ili aje alale kwangu, alipowasili alinieleza yalomfika.

A Kenyan woman from Gilgil born in a poor family disclosed how she was judged by the society after building four houses. Gentrix Walubengo stated that fingers started pointing at her when she built her first house for her mother in the village. According to Gentrix those who knew she had grown up in poverty wondered how she was able to afford to build a house. “Every time I would go and buy things, people would tell their friends to avoid me claiming that I was into Freemason,” she said.

Gentrix posits that people with such kind of thinking capacity always believe if one is born into poverty, they should live and die poor. Born in Nakuru, the 30-year-old was lucky to be employed by the one of the leading private hospitals in Kenya, as a clinical officer. This is after along struggle looking for employment after she also struggled to finish her university education and graduated. Her breakthrough however, came when she resigned from the hospital as a clinical officer and got self-employment.

“The main reason why I left the profession early was that the salary was too low and I needed to do more with my life,” Gentrix said. Soon after she resigned, she generated more money which made her rich and went ahead building the first house for her parents, as a gift to her parents in appreciation for their work towards raising her up. She built her own two houses in Gilgil and another rental property in Nakuru. Every day is full of regrets for Patrick Onyango, who lives in a shack in the sprawling slums in Korogocho, Nairobi. That is not how he envisioned his life would turn out, but it is where he is now and the much he can do is to shed tears. The father of four who divorced his wife disclosed that his woes may have started way back, but they are compounded by his quest to better himself and his children’s life. According to him, he was struggling to feed his children, when he heard that a pastor would pray for him to receive financial breakthrough.

But there was a trap on him; Patrick had to part with Ksh 20,000 in what is termed as “seed offering”. He discloses that whoever informed him about the clergyman waxed lyrical about how powerful the pastor is, and he would repay the money in a few days. Given that there was hope for better things ahead, he borrowed the money from a friend who took a loan on his behalf. It dawned on him that he had been conned when there was no positive financial change in his life, and things even got worse. The loan his friend took on his behalf has since ballooned out of control due to unpaid interest and stands at Ksh 40,608.

“I have no idea on how I’ll pay the money back and my friend stopped talking to me as a result. Things have become more difficult and I have lost all hopes,” he lamented. He thought committing suicide to avoid paying the debt but he had a contradictory opinion because his kids depended on him. He narrated the situation to a number of people from which one of them suggested to him, to seek help from Dr.Mugwenu. A Kenyan man who was fighting for his life over a deadly cancer was healed after smoking cigarettes more than a cartridge of e-cigarette liquid every day for seven consecutive years. According to Boniface Ndung’u, 34, he started vaping in 2016 due to peer influence, thinking that it would be fun. Progressively it became an addictive behavior to him as he couldn’t do without smoking cigarettes as usual. He spent a lot of money in buying cigarettes each day of his life for seven years.

Boniface continued with his habit and he wasn’t able to be controlled by anything. It reached a point where he lacked money to purchase the cigarettes and he felt sick any time he didn’t smoke because of addiction. He decided to take loans from his friends in order for him in acquisition of cigarettes. He smoked all through seven years without skipping a single day. Boniface’s friends asked him to stop by advising him on the negative impacts of smoking cigarettes. They cited to him some of the most negative side effects of smoking in order for him to turn around from smoking but that never changed anything and he considered the advice as a waste of time.

He started coughing blood, chest pain among other symptoms of lung cancer. That is when he stopped smoking. Suddenly it became the situation worsened and he visited hospital for medical checkups, that is when it’s discovered that the cancer had spread and made it difficult to be treated. Boniface is now battling for his life in hospital as the habit badly damaged his lungs. Luckily, his brother was given information about a traditional herbalist who could help. They booked an appointment and travelled to Vihiga to see Dr.Mugwenu.

The feud was centered around Champion Ogudo’s custody. MC Kats accused Alien Skin of creating a ‘toxic’ home environment, which he claimed was unsuitable for Ogudo’s upbringing.

George Ssemwanga, brother-in-law of Ugandan and South African-based businesswoman and socialite Zari Hassan, has been arrested amid an ongoing dispute over the estate of the late Ivan Ssemwanga.

The conflict has intensified over the past week, with Zari and her in-laws clashing over the inheritance and management of Ivan Ssemwanga’s business empire.

Hassan, known as “The Bosslady,” is engaged in a bitter feud with her in-laws regarding the distribution of her late husband’s assets to their sons.

The family dispute has involved various accusations and legal actions. Hassan has responded to the accusations by seeking legal redress, which has led to the arrest of some of her in-laws.

Zari has accused her in-laws of causing hardships for her and her sons over the past seven years since her husband’s death.

Despite her ongoing support to her in-laws’ families, she claims that they have continually tried to undermine her and her children.

Happening at the Arirang Hotel & Restaurant is the 3rd edition of the Hisense Chess Tournament which has officially kicked off for the two days competition began. This will run until July 28th.

The event, organized by Hisense Uganda, the official partner of UEFA EURO 2024, features five age categories: U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18. With a time control of 45 minutes per game plus an additional 10 seconds per move for recording, the matches promise to be intense and fast-paced.

The Hisense Chess Tournament has quickly become a significant annual event in Uganda’s chess calendar. This year, the tournament has attracted a record number of participants, highlighting the growing popularity of chess among the youth. The students, each paying an entry fee of UGX 50,000, are competing not only for the love of the game but also for an array of fantastic prizes.

The new vibing record label ‘KIROKILAMBA’ artist, Bernard JM Mutyaba alias Zeus BNM, has dropped his fifth single under the record label, titled “Thirsty.”

This love ballad beautifully highlights Zeus’s vocal and lyrical talents.

The Love Scotch Affair, an immersive campaign created by Uganda Breweries Ltd (UBL), to reintroduce whisky lovers to scotch, came to an enthralling end on Friday at Tales Lounge in Bukoto. Tales Lounge was full to capacity by 9PM, with guests ready for an unforgettable evening.

She Walker DJ Alisha took it upon herself to set the perfect party mood for the night. The female disc spinner was simply on fire as she wowed the crowd with an exciting set, that ensured that the Love Scotch Affair ended on a high.

Alicia took revelers on a musical journey that featured bangers from Kidandali, 90s RnB, Hip-hop, Amapiano and of course the hard-hitting Afro beats. Rightly put; Alicia took charge and meant business.

With bottles of whisky flowing, partygoers danced and sang to almost everything Alisha played. Tales was a vibe! The frequent sparks of waitresses delivering perfect serves of the different whiskies, the loud toasts with clinking sounds of glasses, all spoke to a celebration of shared passions.

“We are thrilled with what we have been able to achieve with the Love Scotch Affair. We’ve had a great time with our whisky lovers, and we have been able to demystify myths about whisky, learnt about the perfect scotch pairings and savoury cocktails. It has been two months of fun, and we are happy that we managed to bring whisky lovers and enthusiasts together,” said Christine Kyokunda, the Scotch & Reserve Brand Manager at UBL.

Being the campaign finale, UBL put on a show-stopping display. They brought out every scotch and whisky in their portfolio for guests to enjoy. From Johnnie Walker Red Label to Blue Label, VAT 69, J&B and the Singleton, there was something for everyone.

Cocktails lovers were in for a grand treat; from the classics—smoky, spicy, or fruity; there was something to cater to every palate.

“Whisky lovers welcomed the Love Scotch Affair with open arms, and they have supported by purchasing and consuming our scotch products everywhere we have gone. Events like these allow us create lasting memories, while showcasing the versatility and timeless appeal of our scotch whiskies,” Kyokunda added.
