In a recent interview, the singing duo of Ugaboys Africa shared their thoughts on the current state of songwriting in Uganda, and they argued that Uganda has yet to see a certified songwriter since the passing of the late Mowzey Radio.

According to them, despite receiving offers from various songwriters eager to pen lyrics for them, they often find themselves disappointed upon hearing the proposed lyrics.

In fact, they expressed a desire to write for these self-proclaimed songwriters, highlighting a gap in the industry’s standards.

Moreover, when confronted with the achievements of some songwriters who have garnered awards, Ugaboys vehemently dismissed these accolades, suggesting that the true masters of songwriting are yet to make their mark and that the few that have won awards didn’t deserve them as they emphasized those who truly understand the craft to come for what rightfully belongs to them.

Many writers reach out with a desire to sell music to us and on sending their demos, you listen to what they’ve penned down but in actual sense feel like we should be the ones doing the writing for them. All these writers need help, they should be written for.

Coca-Cola highlights commitment to sustainability

By Tshidi Ramogase

At Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA), our sustainability strategy is centred around people—consumers and our employees—and driving sustainable solutions that build resilience into our business to respond to current and future challenges, while creating positive change for the planet.

Water is a priority for the Coca-Cola system because it is the first ingredient in all our beverages and is essential to the communities we serve.

The Coca-Cola Company’s 2030 Water Security Strategy focuses on increasing water security. We work with partners to provide access to a steady supply of clean water for people and ecosystems in the areas where we operate and source ingredients.

We do that by contributing toward sustainable, clean water access that improves livelihoods and wellbeing while protecting against water-related disasters.

Inside our operations, we are committed to regenerative water use. This means using less water as well as re-using and treating wastewater.

For example, in Kenya we opened a new wastewater treatment plant at our Equator Bottlers plant in Kisumu, which will promote more sustainable water use and help reduce the factory’s environmental impact. The new plant will enable us to treat and recycle wastewater generated from the production facility, which will be used for non-potable purposes such as irrigation and cleaning.

Our subsidiary, Coca-Cola Beverages Botswana, signed an agreement last year with the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources to donate water from its newly installed water treatment plant for agricultural irrigation at the campus. The new state-of-the-art water treatment plant has made the company fully effluent compliant by ensuring that clean water is returned to the environment.

For our packaging, we seek to drive a circular economy because this helps to reduce waste and carbon emissions. We’re working to use more recycled content in our packaging, to expand our use of refillable bottles, and to collect packaging for recycling through Coca-Cola’s World Without Waste initiative. We also partner to design new solutions for packaging.

As an example, Coca-Cola and other like-minded industries came together in 2004 to set up the PET Recycling Company (PETCO) in South Africa to promote and regulate the recycling of PET plastic, taking responsibility for recovering and recycling beverage PET plastic bottles.

The PETCO model has proven so effective it has been extended to three other markets, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia, with plans to include additional countries like Namibia.

While we strive to make progress on our own, we are committed to fostering partnerships that drive collective impact in areas including water stewardship, packaging circularity, climate action and many more.

We engage with stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, communities, suppliers, business partners, customers and consumers in all the markets where we operate, in many forums and formats. Feedback from our stakeholders allows us to learn and improve, and informs our business and sustainability strategy.

In a surprising career move, popular media personality Zahara Totto has left Sanyuka TV to join Makula TV as a DJ.

Zahara, known for her vibrant presence in the entertainment industry, expressed her reasons for the switch, citing a need for career growth.

I reached a point and felt like I was overdoing the same thing for a long time and not progressing career-wise. That’s so deadly in such an economy,” Zahara explained.

Doing gossip wouldn’t take me any further. I needed a show that is full-packaged, that would grow me in all aspects of life,” she added.

Despite these setbacks, Zahara remains a prominent figure in the Ugandan entertainment scene.

Her rise to fame began in 2017 when she, along with colleague Annatalia Oze, hosted the popular celebrity gossip show “Live Wire” on Spark TV. The success of this show led to their recruitment by NBS TV, where they continued their gossip careers with the show “Uncut”.

Beyond her TV career, Zahara Totto has ventured into various fields, including aviation, deejaying, and brand influencing.

Her journey serves as an inspiring testament to her versatility and determination in navigating the dynamic entertainment industry.

World Environment Day: MTN Uganda pioneering environmental stewardship for a sustainable future

Three years ago, MTN Uganda embarked on an ambitious project to restore 220 hectares of forest cover.

By Our Reporter

Three years ago, MTN Uganda embarked on an ambitious project to restore 220 hectares of forest cover. This initiative, part of the larger “Uganda is Home” campaign, celebrated the symbiotic relationship between MTN Uganda and the people of Uganda, reinforcing the company’s commitment to the socio-economic well-being of the country.

MTN Uganda’s forest restoration initiative was more than a symbolic gesture; it was a tangible recommitment to Uganda’s environmental and socio-economic development. Three years later, the initiative aligns with the 2024 World Environment Day theme, “land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience” highlighting the critical importance of reforestation for a sustainable future.

Launched at Kyewaga Central Forest Reserve in Entebbe, the project was undertaken in partnership with the National Forestry Authority. The reforestation effort aimed to restore forest cover in five Central Forest Reserves (CFRs) across the country: Barifa CFR in Arua, Kagombe CFR in Kibaale, Jubiya CFR in Masaka, and Ogera Hills CFR in Serere district. The project symbolized the company’s then, 22-year presence in Uganda, with each 10 hectares representing one year of MTN’s existence in the country.

In the three years since the project’s inception, the impact has been profound. The restored forests have not only enhanced biodiversity but also improved the livelihoods of local communities. Forests play a crucial role in climate regulation, water purification, and soil preservation, contributing to the overall health of the environment and the well-being of the people.

MTN Uganda’s environmental conservation efforts extend beyond reforestation initiatives. The company has decisively committed to environmental responsibility with its goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, already bearing significant results through its “Project Zero” initiative.

This comprehensive initiative focused on decarbonization has led to the company reducing its emissions by more than half in just two years.

The company registered a remarkable 59% reduction in emissions in Q1 2023 in comparison to Q1 2021. This reduction was achieved through strategic deployment of smart energy monitoring tools, which provided invaluable insights and enabled the implementation of key actions to significantly reduce power consumption.

The project also targeted Tower Co sites, achieving a 15% reduction in emissions despite adding over 1,000 sites within two years. This accomplishment was driven by widespread solar deployment, integration of lithium-ion batteries, and a strategic shift in the primary power source.

MTN Uganda is in its initial stages of introducing electric vehicles (EVs) into its fleet, aligning with the company’s broader strategy to further reduce emissions. Although still in the procurement phase, this move marks a significant step towards sustainable transportation within the company.

MTN Uganda is in its initial stages of introducing electric vehicles (EVs) into its fleet.

Looking ahead, MTN Uganda is exploring innovative solutions to harness wind power in targeted locations, despite the geographical constraints of Uganda not being at sea level.

Ongoing projects, including wind power production Proof of Concepts (POCs), are progressing, showcasing the company’s commitment to exploring all avenues for sustainable energy.

The company’s dedication to sustainability and the ongoing success of Project Zero exemplify its leadership in the journey towards a greener future.

Today, as we celebrate the 2024 World Environment Day, the success of MTN Uganda’s reforestation project serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of ecosystem restoration. It exemplifies how corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand, creating a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
