Sabotage, a new film exploring sexual violence and abortion in a Ugandan context, has premiered. The premiere, attended by players in Uganda’s arts industry, representatives from development organisations, celebrities and film enthusiasts, took place on Thursday at the Century Cinemax Acacia Mall.

Directed by Mathew Nabwiso and starring Stella Natumbwe, Sharifa Ali, Jjemba Dean Austin, Denid Kinan and others in a rollercoaster drama, the movie is set around a traditional wedding (‘kwanjula’), and aims to raise awareness around Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) in Uganda.

While addressing guests during the premiere, Humphrey Nabimanya, the film’s Executive Producer, said, “Sexual violence is distressingly prevalent and disproportionately impacts girls and women – subjecting them to enduring trauma and often leading to unsafe abortions. Sabotage sheds light on this urgent matter and emphasises the pressing need for immediate action to protect our young girls and women.”

Abortion is illegal in Uganda with Article 22 of the 1995 Constitution providing for the right to life and Article 22(2) specifically providing for not terminating an unborn child except if it is to save the life of the mother. As a result, unsafe abortion practices become the feasible alternative – especially for victims of sexual violence – and contribute to maternal deaths in Uganda.

Sabotage movie premiere

Reach A Hand Uganda’s Country Director – James Tumusiime – said, “Through Sabotage, we are leveraging the power of visual activism to highlight and address stigma, gender-based violence, teenage pregnancy, maternal mortality as a result of unsafe abortion and harmful cultural narratives in the Ugandan context.”

The film’s premiere offered selected attendees an opportunity to witness the culmination of months of hard work and dedication by the cast and crew.

Mathew Nabwiso, the film’s director, said, “We are honoured by the effort put into making this movie and by the desire to bring about significant societal change, and we look forward to even more members of the public getting an opportunity to experience it and join the frank conversation around Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights in Uganda.”

Following the screening, guests were treated to an elegant reception complete with cocktails and opportunities to mingle with the cast and crew and share their thoughts about the film.

Sabotage will be available for a public screening on 23rd , 24th and 25th February 2024 at the Century Cinemax branches at Acacia Mall, Arena Mall and Metroplex Naalya.

Sabotage is a project by Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) in partnership with Sauti+ Media Hub and Nabwiso Films.

Strategic Review: Will New Vision Return to Profitability?

$
0
0

For the financial year ended June 2023, New Vision issued a profit warning and thus proceeded to post a loss of UGX 5.6 billion. The previous year, New Vision had posted a net profit of UGX 988 million. This implied a dip of 652%, it is this abnormality that ought to worry investors. Unless something catastrophic happens in a company, profits do not swing in this fashion. What could be killing New Vision?

In their annual report, New Vision indicated that 2023 was the fourth year of their five-year strategy. Will they return to profitability in the final year of their strategy? Did the strategy work? Was it a failure of strategy?

Before we give commentary, it’s important that we also bring to light a few facts:

  1. New Vision’s non-current assets of property, plant, and equipment (PPE) increased from UGX 34.4 billion to 44.4 billion
  2. Inventories increased from UGX 10.4Bn to UGX 21.4Bn.
  3. Receivables reduced from UGX 132.8Bn to 26.9Bn
  4. Payables increased from UGX 11.2Bn to UGX 38.2Bn
  5. Cash from operations increased from UGX 5.2Bn to UGX21.2Bn
  6. Cash paid for PPE increased from UGX 4.3Bn to UGX 12.4Bn
  7. Cash and cash equivalents reduced from UGX 2.5Bn to UGX 2.2Bn
  8. New Vision closed the year with Work in Progress equivalent to UGX 10 Bn

Although it would have given more detail to work out the financial ratios of New Vision (profitability, liquidity etc), in this context, there would be no loss in generality from not doing so. There are some glaring facts that New Vision ought to address if it is to return to profitability.

First, it would be important to understand what kind of projects New Vision is pursuing. What is this UGX 10 Bn Work in Progress? What was the rationale of pursuing those projects? Are they strategic projects? New Vision’s Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) Strategy should be reviewed as soon as possible. For a company that generated more cash from operations, only to use the same cash in the purchase of PPE. For a firm dealing with economic downturns, an efficient hold on cash would make sense and the Capex plan would have to be reprioritized. Why for example is New Vision holding to motor vehicles and cycles? Why not lease them? Why not benchmark other organizations in this aspect?

Secondly, there’s an issue of the inventory. Why would New Vision keep commercial paper of UGX 5.1 Bn and publishing stock jumping from UGX 2.1Bn to UGX 10.2 Bn. This is an urgent matter to be addressed. What’s New Visions inventory strategy? For a company whose publishing revenue has fallen from UGX 26Bn to UGX 7.5Bn, there’s no justification for holding this much inventory.

The other contradiction is the reduction in receivables and a jump in payables. How will New Vision clear payables that have since more than doubled from UGX 11.2Bn to UGX 38.2Bn? If the plan is to jump to profitability in 2024, then this is a number that will haunt New Vision in 2024.

Other areas to address are the cost of sales, and the expected credit losses. In brief, none of New Vision’s numbers paints a possibility of returning to profitability. It would take buckets of creative accounting for New Vision to register a profit in 2024.

For National Social Security Fund that holds a 19.61% stake in the company, it should consider reducing this shareholding. Yes, New Vision may return to profitability, but that could take another 3 to 4 years. With a board that’s tied up with other commitments, with an average age of board at 53 years, it would be the most magical turnaround in Ugandan corporate history. However, we could trust in the miracle of the innovation and diversification that has been mentioned as the weapon for a return to profitability.

PSFU to host Season III of the Women’s Day Katale in Jinja. An opportunity for Women in Eastern Uganda to showcase their Business Enterprises.

In its continuous commitment to bolster private sector engagement nationwide, Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) has declared that the third season of the Women’s Day Katale will take place at the Dam Waters Rugby Ground in Jinja, from March 15th to 17th, 2024. The theme for this season is “Bridging Economic Divides for Women’s Prosperity.” This initiative is supported by Young Africa Works (YAW) Lead Firm Structure program, funded by Mastercard Foundation.

Jinja has been chosen as the ideal host for this year’s event due to its strategic location, abundant untapped opportunities in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism, and a substantial pool of unemployed youth who, with opportunities, can significantly contribute to Uganda’s economic growth.

“This year’s Katale, held in the economically vibrant city of Jinja, reflects our strategic decision to bring this platform to Eastern Uganda. This region, though brimming with potential, faces considerable economic challenges. By hosting the Katale here, we aim to empower local women entrepreneurs, contribute to regional development, and bridge the economic divide,” Mr Stephen Asiimwe the PSFU Chief Executive Officer said.

He added: “As part of this year’s Katale, we are delighted to announce the participation of Inebantu, the Queen of the Busoga Kingdom, as a special guest. Her influence and leadership will serve as an inspiration to young women in the Eastern Region and beyond. Through effective mobilization strategies, including community-based partnerships, digital marketing, media outreach, and the involvement of social media influencers, we aim to ensure maximum participation and impact.”

The third annual event builds on the success of the previous ‘Katales’ held in 2022 and 2023. The Women’s Day Katale debuted in Luwero district in 2022, drawing over 100 women-founded and women-led businesses. The second edition, hosted in Kampala in 2023, witnessed the participation of more than 250 women enterprises who showcased products, acquired business management skills, and delved into corporate governance.

Aligned with International Women’s Day celebrations, the Katale is an annual event that acknowledges the significant contributions and potential of women and girls as entrepreneurs. It serves as a platform for young individuals to network, connect with potential customers, and expand their customer base.

Simultaneously, women entrepreneurs seize the opportunity to learn, enhance their skills, and build capacity across various business aspects. During the Katale, women and girl entrepreneurs exhibit their products and services at no cost, engage in networking activities, acquire marketing skills, and have the chance to sell their products directly to the audience during the exhibition.

“The Women’s Day Katale is a powerful platform for women entrepreneurs to connect, learn, and grow. It has been growing tremendously since its inception in 2022, and last year, over 600 young entrepreneurs participated in Kampala, showcasing the event’s growing reach and impact. The event will feature business clinics led by industry experts, a One-Stop-Centre facilitated by key government agencies and banks, and a platform for women entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services, expanding their market reach and forging valuable connections,” Madam Sarah Kagingo, the PSFU Vice Chairperson noted.

The global theme for International Women’s Day 2024, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” emphasizes the vital role women play in driving economic growth and societal well-being. Yet, despite remarkable progress, significant barriers continue to prevent women from fully participating in the economy. This makes the 2024 PSFU Katale a very timely intervention.

Ugandan rapper Gravity Omutujju faces a setback as YouTube removes his latest song, “Edoboozi Lya Mutuuze,” following a copyright claim from fellow artist Bobi Wine.

The removal of the song, a blow to Gravity Omutujju’s week, came after YouTube received a copyright removal request from Bobi Wine, as revealed by screenshots shared online.

Ugandan rapper Gravity Omutujju has responded defiantly to singer and politician Bobi Wine after his latest song, “Edoboozi Lya Mutuuze,” was removed from YouTube due to a copyright claim made by Bobi Wine’s camp.

The blow came on Monday when Gravity Omutujju and his team received the disheartening news that their music video for “Edoboozi Lya Mutuuze” had been taken down from the platform following a copyright removal request initiated by Bobi Wine.

In a statement shared online, YouTube clarified that the removal of “Edoboozi Lya Mutuuze” was in response to a copyright infringement claim, indicating that Gravity had violated copyright law by borrowing content from Bobi Wine’s song “Kiwani.”

This development has sparked a flurry of reactions from netizens and the general public.

Bobi Wine feared the song, that’s why he reported it on YouTube. I can assure you that none of the songs he re-did sound good. All those songs are flops,” Gravity Omutujju asserted during a local TV interview, hitting back at Bobi Wine.

Gravity Omutujju, known for his energetic stage performances, has solidified his position as one of Uganda’s top stage performers with hits like “Okwepicha” since his breakthrough in 2000s.
