Carol Nantongo reveals she has never written any song for herself

$

In a surprising revelation during an interview on Galaxy FM, Carol Nantongo, the Ugandan songstress, stunned fans by admitting that she has never written any of her songs.

Despite this revelation, she asserted her involvement in the creative process by tweaking lyrics to her liking.

The disclosure sheds light on an often overlooked aspect of the music industry where songwriters frequently labor behind the scenes, crafting melodies and lyrics that become chart-topping hits, only to receive minimal recognition.

However, Nantongo’s perspective challenges this narrative, suggesting that by purchasing songs from writers, artists like herself become rightful owners of the music they perform, blurring the lines of authorship and ownership.

Despite not being the lyricist behind her songs, Carol Nantongo has amassed a number hit singles, including the popular tracks “Nyiga Wano” and “Ndabula” featuring the B2C, which dominated the airwaves last year.

Nantongo’s revelation also highlights a broader trend within the Ugandan music industry, where few female artists are recognized for their songwriting abilities.

“It took you close to 10 years to get a hit song.” – Ugaboys tell Pallaso

Ugaboys and Pallaso have found themselves at the center of a heated online feud following remarks made by Ugaboys regarding Pallaso’s recent collaboration with Konshens, “Want Money.”

During an interview with Galaxy TV, Ugaboys criticized Pallaso’s latest song, igniting a fiery exchange of words between the two camps.

Pallaso swiftly responded to the criticism on his X social media platform, condemning Ugaboys as mere “Amapiano wannabes” who lack the ability to produce a hit song.

In retaliation, Ugaboys fired back, highlighting Pallaso’s journey in the music industry. They pointed out that despite starting his career in 2005, it took him nearly a decade to achieve his first hit song, “Amaaso,” a collaboration with Radio & Weasel in 2014. This jab struck a nerve with Pallaso who the Ugaboys labeled as having quick temper.

The feud escalated as Pallaso labeled Ugaboys as “old upcoming” artists and declared it his duty to revive failed careers.

However, amidst the online clash, Ugaboys have cemented their own success, notably with their breakout hit “Salary,” which excited audiences and dominated charts in the past year.

In the world of dreams and aspirations, paths often take unexpected turns. One such inspiring story is that of Ava Peace, a talented musician who once dreamed of soaring through the skies as a pilot.

Today, she has found her true calling in the world of music, entertaining audiences with her soulful melodies and danceable music, and is currently signed under Team No Sleep, managed by Jeff Kiwa.

As a young girl, Ava Peace harboured a deep fascination with aeroplanes as revealed on the Star Connect show by Galaxy TV.

A Twist of fate happened as we know life has a way of surprising us, which resulted in her path taking an u- turn. She believes that things became harder, and at her higher levels of education, she opted for different courses that couldn’t make her dream a reality.

Although Ava Peace’s dream of becoming a pilot may have changed, she has fully embraced her musical journey. She has entertained us with lots of good music with her currently trending jam dubbed “whiskey” being the dancefloor banger in all night clubs in the nightlife.

Same Fate as Kabalagala? The Rise and Fall of Bandali Rise

$
0
0

Prior to Covid-19, Bandali Rise was the place to be in Uganda. This street annexed on the road that leads to the Bugolobi flats was the ultimate party life street of Kampala. If somebody doubted Kampala’s night life, you swifted them through this street. Then turned around, glanced at them, and popped the question; “you gerrit?”

Kampala’s night life has always shifted. It was first in Kabalagala. Then, Kabalagala was the place that never went to sleep. There was Capital Pub, there were all sorts of bars, speak of Al’s bar. Speak of the diverse international community in the area, not forgetting the peddlers of the night. And what was life without having stepped into Deposh? Then came the bombs at Ethiopian Village and the constant raids by KCCA. “Kabalagala night life was never the same after this. The media also branded it as the harlot capital, so some people feared to be associated with Kabalagala,” a former reveller reveals.

At around the same time, the Kampala night night temporarily shared spaces around the Railway square, these were the days of Club Rouge. These were the days when the Kenneth Ntaros of this world deserved the Desire Luzindas of every man’s dream. But this space too would close. And the night life would permanently find a spot at two places in Kampala. That was Acacia and Bandali rise.

But Bandali rise won the day, it kept innovating at scale. And it had higher standards. You just couldn’t saunter into Alchemist or Thrones anyhow. They were the first people to bring in valets, to help clients park their cars. Then they hitched up the bottle nights. And the food at the hangouts. Before this, Kampala bars were slow at introducing the food option at their location. Even when they did, it was always snacks or some fries and chicken. Bandali rise did raise the standard. And Bugolobi came with that extra layer of security. You would never hear of a missing side mirror.

Fast-forward, the covid-19 lockdown came to Uganda in 2020 and life was never the same. “The quickest thing is Ugandans got to know the price of their alcohol. They also realized that they could recreate the same Bandali experience in their suburb bars, without the whole hustle of Bandali,” a bar proprietor tells us. Post-covid-19, it became hard to run a bar.

Bandali rise had capitalized on having these great interior designs, every other bar in Kampala could now do the same. There was no real differentiation. The competition for the best Deejays started. Then the whole affair of the band nights kicked off. “Honestly, the margins don’t make sense anymore. That’s why we closed that business. Today, to put up a proper night, you need a lot. Speak of bar hosts, the deejays, then the service, it’s expensive,” another former bar owner tells us.

Now, although Bandali rise still exists, the Kampala night seems to have shifted. It’s shifted slowly to the suburbs. The Kafundas have become modernized. Today, the future of the bar is the hometown Kafunda that grows with its organic crowd. And the thing about the Kafunda, people know each other, they become networking spots. Kafundas are even organizing weddings for their members. Some kafundas have started saccos. It’s this value proposition that Bandali rise cannot match anymore. Will the bars at Bandali rise innovate one more time and challenge the suburb trend?

“You see, the people who always frequented Bandali, most of them stay in Najjera, Kyanja, Kisasi, they are on this other end of town. And now they have better things next to where they stay. Bandali doesn’t have that diversity of entertainment as their suburbs,” Joy a Kampala party animal narrates.

What is the future of Bandali rise? Is this the fall of Bandali rise, as was the fall of the Roman empire?

The much-anticipated King Kong Live In The City concert, headlined by Fik Fameica was majorly a success but there some behind the scenes events that occurred that led to some artists not to perform.

Eddy Kenzo, one of Uganda’s renowned artists, faced hurdles upon his arrival at the Lugogo Cricket Oval. Scheduled for a 10 pm performance, Kenzo’s entrance was marred by poor communication and handling by the event’s promoter, Musa Kavuma, popularly known as KT Promotionz.

Kenzo’s security team approached the gate with professionalism, seeking guidance on accessing the stage. However, their inquiries were met with hostility from the heavily guarded promoter, KT.

In a frustrating exchange, KT’s response, laden with disrespect, left Kenzo’s team stranded at the entrance. Despite attempts to resolve the situation, the lack of cooperation persisted, resulting in Kenzo’s inability to access the venue.

Kenzo’s experience was not an isolated incident. Mudra, another artist slated to perform, found himself entangled in a similar confrontation at the gate.

With tensions escalating and access denied, Mudra, like Kenzo, left the premises without the opportunity to perform for the revelers.

While Fik Fameica may not have been directly involved in the backstage logistics, the incident highlights the importance of accountability among event organizers.

Amidst all this, Kenzo holds highest levels of professionalism and you would imagine him to brag considering the achievements he has reached but he remains humble even in the testing experiences.

APASS: Some musicians pursue sugar mummies, while others seek cars in music (VIDEO)

While talking about his new album, “Bagonza” that released recently – APASS highlighted that some musicians are simply doing “biscuit music.”

He used the word to refer to music with less meaning and zero lyrical maturity. In particular he picked out music that usually trends on TikTok.

APASS says it better to hold your brand in high regard and out music that’s to perfect liking and not just music that will last days or months — he referenced to Maurice Kirya and Juliana Kanyomozi who are a bit expensive to book but you can be assured the quality is there than some artists who will come cheaply but don’t offer the best performances.

However, panelists on NBS After 5 disagreed with him citing that the audiences decide what type of music is best for them and everyone can support an artist of their liking.

APASS in retaliation noted that musicians are in the entertainment industry for different reasons; some are there for purely music merit and others want to popular and attract sugar mummies who’ll finance their lives while the rest are in it for material benefits like cars, houses, etc.

In a recent interview with a local TV station, Ugandan rapper Gravity Omutujju shared his views on the ongoing controversy surrounding the Ugandan National Musicians Federation’s (UNMF) receipt of a Ugx.13 Billion stimulus fund from the government.

Omutujju took the opportunity to advise singer and politician Bobi Wine to exhibit exemplary behavior and allow fellow artists to benefit from government support without unnecessary interference.

This comment comes in response to Bobi Wine’s persistent criticism of the UNMF for accepting the significant financial aid intended to facilitate the organization’s internal activities and objectives.

Bobi Wine has offered notes on quitting alcohol to comedian Patrick Idringi Salvador. This follows Salvador’s tweet four days into his no alcohol moment. One of Salvador’s goals this year is to completely go off alcohol, this following in the footsteps of many other Ugandan celebs.

Bobi Wine revealed that he’d last sipped alcohol in 2012 and since then has been writing a book on how to keep sober without any struggle. Among the other Ugandans on the no alcohol movement is famous creative Useful Idiot. He’s yet to give updates on how the journey is going so far.

The alcohol-free movement in Uganda also has people such as President Yoweri Museveni. Sources also revealed that the first son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba is currently on this teetotalism movement, having last sipped some alcohol in January 2023.

“This trend is more common among Gen Zs. You know us Gen Zs we hate the struggle that comes with alcohol, the hangovers. Being sober is the new drug. Like you take in all your life with everything it hits you with. You don’t blur your reality,” Murkomen a Gen Z told BigEye.ug

If things go like this, the alcohol-free movement could soon demand for alcohol free beer. But we shall remind them that Soda and water already exist for this purpose.
