By Our Reporter

MTN Kampala marathon has received a sponsorship package of UGX 70 million from Prudential insurance for the upcoming marathon activity to provide health check-up services. This took place at the IMC(c-care) clinic along parliamentary avenue in Kampala.

The MTN Kampala marathon set to take place this Sunday is set to run for a great cause of improving neonatal and maternal health services across the country.

It’s upon this premise that Prudential Uganda and its partners from IMC and Red cross have handed over a sponsorship package worth UGX 70 million to MTN Uganda that comes with emergency and health care services for the pre-run and during the marathon run on 20th November this Sunday.

Prudential Uganda’s Chief Health Officer, Paul Nagemi said: “This initiative is geared towards influencing a healthy lifestyle for Ugandans, especially those who will participate in the MTN Kampala Marathon. This is our way of giving back to the public and encouraging them to prioritize their health.”

Dr. Arthur Sesanga, the Director of Medical Services at C-Care IMC Uganda urged the participants of the MTN Kampala marathon to embrace the offer.

“I implore the people who intend to participate in the Marathon to visit any of our selected C-Care and IMC health centers and have a free BMI/ECG test done prior to the marathon to check their health, fitness and Cardio functions,” Dr. Sesanga said.

Runners will need to provide their proof of payment for their marathon kits via mobile money messages or show their receipts at selected c-care centers in order to receive free BMI and ECG tests.

Speaking at the press conference, Martin Sebuliba the MTN Uganda Senior Manager, Brand and communication expressed his gratitude to Prudential and its partners who have committed to supporting the runners with health checks and ensuring that they are physically fit to run for the babies’ cause.

“The MTN Kampala marathon is a professionally run marathon that will have different groups of people like the elite runners, the elderly, and the kids present to run for a good cause, therefore it’s important that we have basic medical services available to the runners for the preparation of and during the marathon,” he said.

“We at MTN Uganda are very pleased to receive a sponsorship package that caters to our runners and is putting their health first to achieve the goal of running for a good cause and having fun while at it,” he added.

The sponsorship package from Prudential and its partners will include BMI and ECG tests for runners as they prepare to run in the days leading to the marathon and will also have a full set-up team at the Kololo independent grounds as the marathon takes place.

Proceeds from this year’s Marathon shall be used to upgrade maternal and newborn services in four selected health facilities across the country. The beneficiary health facilities include Kisenyi and Kawaala health facilities in the suburbs of Kampala plus those in Kachumbala (Teso sub-region) and Kabong (Karamoja sub-region).

The 2022 edition of the MTN Kampala Marathon will be held on Sunday 20th November starting at the Kololo independence grounds with runners participating in any of 4 categories including; the full marathon (42Km), half marathon (21Km), 10Km race, and 5Km fun run.

Speaking during the occasion, Samuel Wantate, UBTS Nakasero Blood Bank team lead, emphasized that that blood transfusion is critical in saving lives and appealed to more people to come forward and donate blood. “Every so often, blood donation is needed to save the lives of those involved in accidents especially motor accidents which are on a sharp rise, mothers who excessively bleed during childbirth, and those with medical conditions such as cancer, sickle cells, anemia, and blood disorders.”

After donations, the blood is screened against transfusable infections such as HIV/AIDs, syphilis, and others, then taken to the Nakasero Blood Bank, Mengo Blood Bank, and other regional blood banks across the country where the blood is then accessible, at no cost.

Refugee Children from the Bidibidi Refugee settlement (I CAN children), through a song Tuko Pamoja translated as “WE ARE ONE”, appreciate Uganda for its open-door policy to welcoming refugees and asylum seekers and call for the continued spirit of Ubuntu to ensure their safe and happy stay.

Featuring the East Africa Golden Buzzer Girl Leyna Kagere and Uganda Popular Kid Rapper Fresh Kid, the song lyrics say that “We are African. We are one people. Let us maintain the spirit of Ubuntu”.

According to the, I CAN South Sudan Executive Director, Stephen Wandu, Tuko Pamoja Album aims to provide a platform for vulnerable children to directly have a say about their plight and to seek support towards their education, development, protection, and well-being.

I CAN Children are unaccompanied refugee minors under the refugee-led organization called I CAN South Sudan Program. The minors fled the South Sudan conflict en masse in 2016 with near strangers and settled in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement. Although some were reunited with their families, others were put under some form of foster care.

I CAN South Sudan focuses on the children to inculcate a sense of meaning, purpose, and hope in the lives of vulnerable children and to contribute to developing them socially, mentally, spiritually, and physically.

Wandu said, “We engage the children in singing, drawing and painting, comedy, storytelling, sports and games, life skills, public speaking, appropriate sex education, counseling, and healing programs with the vulnerable host community.”

The children are teaching us to celebrate and embrace our uniqueness using the arts. They are expressing their innermost experience through this song with a beautiful tone of hope and resilience – and through music, they are strengthening their bond with the host community,” said Frank Walusimbi, UNHCR’s Associate Communications Officer.

Through TUKO PAMOJA, the kids get to put their talent to use and express themselves while passing on a key message. Through the song, the children, I CAN South Sudan, and the supporting partners would like to pass on the following Appeal

1. We would like all to live in more equal, peaceful, and gender-just societies based on inclusive human rights and accounting institutions. We are African. We are one people. Let us maintain the spirit of Ubuntu.

2. We call upon the world to increase funding to Uganda as it committed to the Global Compact for Refugees to ease the pressures on host countries.

3. We call for a fair share of funding to be directed to the plight of children in Uganda to reduce school dropouts, child marriage, child pregnancy, street children, and neglect of children with disability.

4. We call on host districts to secure refugee farmlands for cultivation to ward off decreasing food rations from the UN.

Kampala Club Men’s Bar gets facelift

One of Kampala’s oldest exclusive members’ clubs, Kampala Club in Nakasero, launched a new Tusker Malt Bar at the multi-sports and social facility.

By Our Reporter

On Friday evening, one of Kampala’s oldest exclusive members’ clubs, Kampala Club in Nakasero, launched a new Tusker Malt Bar at the multi-sports and social facility.

The function was presided over by Uganda Breweries Managing Director, Andrew Kilonzo and this was a sign that it was much more than just celebrating a facelift of one of the bars at the facility but a big step in UBL’s inclusion agenda.

Historically, the club was started in 1911 for persons of pure European descent but natives were admitted 30 years later. However, gender inclusion took a while longer with some facilities like the Men’s Bar exclusive to males.

Over the years, the facilities were opened up to all genders and Kilonzo was elated that what was historically the Men’s Bar is now the Tusker Malt Bar. And, as a gesture of celebrating breaking the barriers, Kilonzo took on the bartender’s duties and served the first drink, a Tusker Malt, to female member Claire Bashasha.

“At UBL we are very passionate about inclusion and diversity. We want to reflect the society in its shape and form. We are all about progression and we are proud of the steps we have achieved. We are aware that this has been a men’s bar only in name as women are welcome, but we hope it can now be called a members’ bar,” Kilonzo said.

Kampala club offers an impressive range of world class sporting facilities such as badminton, tennis, darts, squash, snooker and a gym fitness studio on top of other social facilities like bars and restaurants.

Tucked in the heart of Kampala City on Nakasero Hill, the Tusker Malt Bar will be a unique addition to the exclusive club where patrons will comfortably enjoy a premium experience.

“At UBL we have a purpose. We are all about celebrating life everyday, everywhere. That purpose is alive and well at this club,” Kilonzo added.

Club Chairman, Matthias Nalyanya was on the same page with Kilonzo when it came to inclusion intimating that; “it is a very long time ago when women were not accepted in the Men’s Bar. That is no longer the case. We have a lot of ladies here.”

Nalyanya also asked UBL to deepen their partnership with the club by taking up corporate membership and sponsoring some of the events that take place at the facility. Kilonzo affirmed UBL’s commitment to further engagements with the club.

The Kampala Club is recognised as one of the most exclusive clubs in Uganda. Most of the club’s members are derived from a rich background of professionals in different fields. Through the years, the club has grown from its initial 50 members to 650 members’ to date.

About ASFAs

The Abryanz Style & Fashion Awards were inaugurated in 2013 to honor the contribution of African fashion on a continental level. The mission of the awards is to acknowledge, promote and celebrate African fashion and push for African excellence in a bid to promote the extremely eccentric and colourful fashion scene in Africa which the media so often neglects.

Aamito Lagum and Patricia Akello

By Our Reporter

For the first time, this year’s Abryanz Style & Fashion Awards (ASFAS) will be preceded with a pre-event party. In an announcement made on Satisfashion UG on Friday, supermodels Aamito Lagum and Patricia Akello will host the party slated for Thursday 15th December at Kampala Serena Hotel.

According to the models, who are Satisfashion UG’s November cover girls, the event will be an invite-only party featuring high impact glamour and fun.

“I’m super excited about it [the event]. This is going to be the first-ever Pre-ASFAS party, a very exclusive invite-only event. I mean who wouldn’t want to be a part of this? Considering that 2022 has been such a great year,” Patricia Akello offered.

The two models have had such a stellar year. Aamito landed a role on the big screen, playing alongside industry stalwarts Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton in the fantasy romantic drama film Three Thousand Years of Longing. Akello landed new talent representation in Turkey and Spain and also launched her own swimwear brand called Pakello.

On why they are doing the event, Aamito offered, “I have had quite a journey; from when I started in Kampala and later traveling the world doing what I love. But there is nothing better than celebrating some of life’s special moments with family. For me, Uganda is family! Uganda is home!”

Now in their 8th edition, the ASFAS will be held at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Friday 16th December 2022. They will honor individuals in 5 major categories including; Honorary Awards, Designer Awards, Fashion Awards, Music in Fashion, and Fashion Personalities.

Gulu University students treated to thrilling Freshers Ball experience

Gulu Freshers Ball experience

By Our Reporter

Gulu University students will forever remember the 2022 Freshers Ball experience that took place on Saturday, November 19.

This is because the new campusers were treated to a snippet of what to expect at the Guinness Bright House experience that is slated to take place on Saturday November 26, at the Innovation Village Gulu City.

The ball that was organised to welcome the freshmen saw the premium beer brand do a takeover, taking the newly inducted campusers through a journey of the Guinness Bright House.

This included a fashion and art extravaganza where they got to engage, interact, and enjoy the creative space together with their peers and some of Gulu’s popular creative artists.

Gulu Freshers Ball experience

“This was our way of introducing the Bright House to people here in Gulu. We wanted them to get a snippet of what we have in store for them. The reason why we did this at the Freshers’ Ball is because these are young adults that are drawn to the creative space and we wanted to make sure they are a part of what’s coming come November 26,” said Prudence Mutembei, Guinness Brand Manager.

Gulu will be the first stop of the Guinness Bright House experience as it makes its way to the other parts of the country, following a July debut in Kampala.
