My Extraordinary Adventure with Oyster Tours and Safaris

There is only a few tour and travel companies that I rate highly in Uganda. And Oyster Safaris and Tours easily stands out, like the proverbial sore thumb, amongst those few. I say very easily, because I get emotional when recommending them. And here is why. I booked a trip with them because I needed to escape from a few work-related losses. I wanted something unique. I didn’t care about costs. I just wanted to go somewhere new. But I didn’t know what, or where, or couldn’t exactly describe my feelings or needs. This stage, for many tour companies I’ve dealt with in Uganda, is the breaking point. The person on the other end of the call, possibly the customer care usually gets frustrated by the barrage of questions and indecisiveness so they politely drop you for quick decisive clients.

But not with Oyster Tours and Safaris. The lady realized my pain after, like, the 10th seemingly indecisive question from me. So she flipped the script, and instead asked me 5 questions about how I felt, my mood, among other questions. Of course I poured out my heart about my needs. A lovely conversation had sprung, almost like we were in a therapy session. And then she recommended a place I’d never heard of. A place that didn’t even have as many pictures on the internet. A remote waterfall somewhere in the navel of Northern Uganda; The Aruu Falls. She recommended a series of activities that were especially curated to appeal to my situation; the epic epiphany of a bespoke fantasy adventure.

Every day, for the last 3 days before the trip, I received a reminder. A text message reminding me of what I needed for the trip, the pick-up time, and emphasis on time-keeping as well as the itinerary. They advised that if I wanted to change any order of the itinerary, a communication should come 2 days before the trip; and were quick to explain what that implied. I loved that there was a seamless flow of information. My trip seemed to have started a month before it actually happened, so I felt very confident, but most of all, hyped about the trip in general.

I was picked in a luxury Land Cruiser, and handed a mini brochure about the activities enroute (which were not on the itinerary, but for just in case I decided to stop somewhere.) The first day was about traveling. We made a few stop overs for food, but I was advised to rest. We checked in at the hotel later that evening; and that’s when I got the first real meal. I was told we were in the wilderness, which meant limited access to internet, and unlimited access to the therapy of nature. We were at Aruu Falls, the hotel and camping site. But even more importantly, it felt like we were going primal. The food was another experience of it’s own. The hotel was everything I wanted. A touch of rustic finished with a luxurious antiques. Everything looked like the pictures I’d received, but better.

The next day was punctuated by such adrenaline jerking adventure. We set off after breakfast. Around 10:00am, and headed into a nearby village to interact with the Acholi culture. We were entertained a bit by a group of young children dancing the famous Acholi ‘Lakararaka dance’, on top of knowledge insights from the tour guide. There were a series of other things we needed to do but my body wasn’t rested well. So I requested to go back to the hotel. The driver and tour guide obliged with a smile, like it wasn’t an inconvenience to the rest of the people we’d cancelled on. They told me its okay, and talked me out of the guilt I felt.

The community gave us 3 roosters, some cassava and Mulondo (mondia whitei) roots. Also this was for free. Yeah, the communities there are generous like that. So as part of the experience, we set up a fire and cooked the chicken for lunch. It was like being in a luxurious version of my village, but more tranquil. Later that afternoon, we did a nature walk. Short, but hectic, because it was a series of small, rocky, but slippery (and soggy in some parts) feeders, that led to the mighty Aruu Falls. We stopped to seat on a rock on the safe, upper end of the falls and take pictures. We then proceeded further down the falls, through knee-deep water, and reached a nature swimming pond. All this while, the Oyster Tour and Safari guide was in a safe distance, sharing knowledge about the ancestral heritage of the falls, as well as cautioning me on how to tread the trickery of the slimy, slippery paths. When we reached the pond, it was serene. Exactly what I needed to get centered. It was just me, and a few people who were there to guard me. I’d requested for an experience with an element of solitude divinity; so they picked a time when the falls weren’t that busy. I must have spent 4 hours in that pool, just thinking about my life, my mistakes, losses. When I left it, I was sure what I wanted to do next with my life. It took a carefully curated escape trip, and the hardship of hiking through the thick green mini-forest of Aruu Falls for me to get what my body, mind and spirit needed. I loved that the chaps at Oyster Tours and Safaris listened and pin-pointed to the very exact experience I needed.

The next days flew by. We visited Kidepo Valley National Park, did a wild game drive very early in the morning. Saw a lion and herds of a few other wild animals. We also experienced Gulu’s night life, and on our way back, ate what many rumored was Game Meat around Kafu; and the ever so soft and delicious cassava there. Oyster Tours and Safaris gave me the best experience of my life yet with their professionalism, timely responses, and pragmatic approach to everything I needed for my trip to be the dreamy success that it was. I’d give them a 12/10 any day.

Yellow Card

By Our Reporter

Yellow Card Financial, a fast-growing cryptocurrency company on the continent, has reached the 1 million customers milestone. The cryptocurrency company hit the one million mark in March this year.

Since launching in Nigeria in 2019, Yellow Card has dedicated its efforts to providing financial inclusion and freedom for all Africans. The company expanded into four new African territories in the last year alone, increasing its total country presence to 16.

John Colson, Chief Marketing Officer at Yellow Card, says this achievement no doubt strengthens the company’s brand on the continent and trust among current and future users. It also inspires investor confidence, especially at a time when Yellow Card seeks to expand into more regions.

“Reaching the one million goal is fantastic. It was a massive goal that we set for ourselves, and the team rallied to make it happen. Although it was not an easy journey, it has been a very rewarding one. This showed us that we are on the right track, people value what we are building, and it’s solving a need. Over one million people have trusted Yellow Card, and now it’s our turn to show why it is the number one place for crypto in Africa,” he said.

Over the last few years, the crypto exchange has achieved notable goals, which include: a Series A fundraise of $15M (2021) as well as the launch of the educational platform – Yellow Card Academy (2021), which boasts a wide range of information about cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, and financial literacy. In addition, earlier this year, they also revealed their new brand identity.

Peter Mureu, Marketing Director at Yellow Card, says every decision made has been for the benefit of their customers, reaching far and wide across the continent.

“Every strategic decision we’ve made has always been customer-centric. We’ve advanced key efforts to localise content and engage with customers at events and activations to essentially meet them where they are. From a product perspective, we have allowed our customers to use their local currency to buy and sell crypto. Our strategy to educate customers on cryptocurrencies, combined with the tenacity of the team, are the key factors that helped us reach this milestone. And we are only getting started,” said Peter.

With 1 million customers reached, there is much more ahead for Yellow Card in 2022.

“We have only seen the start of the impact crypto can have in Africa, from job creation to breaking down borders. Over the next few years, we will continue to see innovative ways crypto is used to solve everyday problems,” added John, Yellow Card’s Chief Marketing Officer.

As the leading cryptocurrency company on the continent, Yellow Card will continue to pioneer as it dedicates its efforts to focusing on customers – with an emphasis on education, retention and user experience.

nyege nyege festival 2022

By Our Reporter

Thousands of revelers have flocked the Uganda Waragi Nyege Nyege music festival as it returns after a 2-year hiatus with a new home at Itanda Falls in Jinja. The festival has attracted people from all walks of life and nations.

Clear clouds was exactly what revelers hoped for as they descended on the venue, and the weather gods answered their prayers. With nothing more to worry about, cheap beer aplenty and great music, the party started in earnest.

The festival situated on an 16 acres of forest cover has plenty of options for revelers to choose from including multiple music stages, art installations, and gaming areas, something for every one to satiate their appetite for fun.

nyege nyege festival 2022

One of the stages with “great vibes” was the Bell Lager stage right on the banks of the Nile where revelers were treated to “mpola enjoyments” with a rich line up of top DJs to keep them on their feet.

The big performances of the day were on the main stage which featured our very own Cindy Sanyu and Navio.

The festival kicked off on Thursday afternoon and will go until Sunday.

Nyege Nyege festival has become synonymous with unbridled fun over the years, and this year’s edition was no different. Despite moving to a new venue at Itanda Falls, and threats of being banned, the festival still delivered an unparalleled experience.

Itanda Falls is about an hour’s drive from Jinja town. So, for the festival goers, the experience started as soon as they branched off the tarmac and hit the murram road leading to the venue. It was a bumpy ride, that only further raised the anticipation.

It was four days of non-stop partying, with something for everyone. For live performances, you had to be at the main stage. The other stages, like the Uganda Waragi stage and Bell Lager Stage, had deejay showcases playing popular music. And for alternative music, the dark stage had you covered.

Away from the music, the festival which was set in a pine tree forest, also offered scenic views of the majestic falls as well as several water activities including boat rides and tubing, for the festival goers to cool off and re-energize. And for the aquaphobic ones, there was a swing ride, mechanical bull riding and other carnival games for diversion and their amusement.

Fortunately there was no need for gum boots as the festival was mostly blessed with clear skies, and when it rained, it was only a slight downpour – a welcome reprieve from the scorching sun.

Here are some photos from the festival.

Treepz

By Our Reporter

Treepz has expanded its services to cater to more Africans using buses for their transportation needs. This follows the launch of its new solution, Business Treepz, which is focused on providing quality transportation at affordable rates for employees of companies, students in schools, and any organisation in need for a comfortable vehicle. Treepz technology will enable passengers to be easily checked in at the point of pick-up and checked out at drop-off to ensure a safe journey.

Speaking on the launch of the new service, the country manager Treepz Uganda said, “We are happy about the impact that Treepz has achieved over the last three years. We are excited about the feedback we have got from our dear customers which has enabled us improve our product. We can now better fulfil the requirements of organisations wanting to benefit from our high quality transportation service that also allows the use of technology. We are looking forward to growing our partnerships with businesses and schools to make sure more Africans can move comfortably and safely to wherever they have to go.”

The launch of Business Treepz coincides with Treepz’s three year anniversary. On the 16th of September 2019, Treepz formerly known as Plentywaka, set out officially to change public transportation and bring comfort and safety to riders in Africa using digital technology, starting in Lagos, Nigeria. It then started operating Daily Treepz, a solution that connects commuters with bus drivers via the Treepz App for intra-city travel.

Treepz set up its headquarters in Ontario, Canada, and then expanded to other African countries including Ghana and Uganda to allow more Africans to move around various metropolitan cities in a more structured, predictable and accessible way.

In September 2021, Treepz acquired Stabus Ghana, one of Ghana’s leading mobility startups launched in 2019 by its Co-Founder, Isidore Kpotufe. In Uganda Treepz made the acquisition of a similar start-up in December 2021, Ugabus which was launched in 2016 and had 70% of all bus operators in the East African country on its platform with a mobile money technology for easy payments.

On its anniversary, Treepz celebrates various milestones including 2 million completed bookings through the platform with 134,000+ app downloads across 3 African countries. This was achieved while delivering optimal bus transport solutions backed by constantly improved technology via the Treepz App.

On the anniversary celebration Onyeka said, “All these achievements would not be possible without our brilliant team, key stakeholders, partners, riders, heroes/drivers and people who have trusted us. We would like to say thank you to all. Cheers to more years of hassle free mobility.”

Going forward, Treepz will be focused on expanding its services in the three core markets, seeking for partners in new African countries and will work towards more sustainable transportation solutions powered by electric and gas vehicles to save CO2 emissions.
