Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has announced a stimulus package for bars ahead of the full reopening of the economy to the tune of UGX2.1 billion with funding directed towards the purchase of materials for space enhancement.

By Our Reporter

Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has announced a stimulus package for bars ahead of the full reopening of the economy to the tune of UGX2.1 billion with funding directed towards the purchase of materials for space enhancement.

The support, phased over two years is being extended under the auspices of the Raising the Bar program, an initiative championed by flagship brand, Bell Lager.

Speaking at the event, UBL Acting Managing Director, Eunice Waweru said that as a business, they applaud and support government’s preparedness and response efforts to COVID-19 thus far.

Ms. Waweru added that the Raising the Bar initiative is the Brewery’s effort to work in tandem with the government to support efforts to raise the capacity of bars and enable them to adapt new practices to operate safely following the decision to fully reopen the economy.

“Many bar businesses are in distress following the prolonged period of closure as a result of COVID-19 containment measures. We find it imperative to come in to ease the burden of yet another unprecedented financial shock through Raising the Bar, a program through which we are extending support to enable the safe reopening of bar businesses once Government restrictions are lifted.”

A total of 1,600 bars from Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono have been selected to benefit from the program and will benefit from funding covering space and hygiene enhancement support, provision of awareness training for bars, recreational facilities and similar establishment personnel in the requisite knowledge, social distancing and enhanced hygiene measures that are important in the prevention of COVID-19 transmission in establishments that carry Uganda Breweries Products.

“We are going to fund and equip bars in preparation to welcome customers back to the bar safely. This will be done through funding the provision of physical sanitizing points, mobile bars and additional outdoor seating to allow for the desired social distancing and sensitize bar owners and staff on how to adapt their operations to the current times post pandemic. We have the utmost confidence that this program will help bars reopen safely and minimize risk of infection to customers and staff,” said Emmy Hashakimana, Marketing and Innovations Director, Uganda Breweries.

In addition, Uganda Breweries in partnership with Ministry of Health and Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA), is also organizing a mass COVID-19 vaccination drive targeted at bar staff, consumers and the general public at various bars and hospitality venues spread across Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono.

“Whereas there has been a fair uptake of COVID-19 vaccines resulting in over 12 million doses being administered countrywide, many people still have not received their second dose or are due for booster shots. We call upon bar staff and consumers to turn up in large numbers and get vaccinated to create a safe environment ahead of reopening,” Ms. Waweru added.

Uganda Breweries last year championed efforts to scale up accessibility to vaccines for the general population by extending vaccination to hospitality venues and mass vaccination events bringing on-board various partners from the private sector and cultural institutions including the Buganda Kingdom.

“We appreciate Uganda Breweries for strengthening the national health response to the pandemic in a strong way through mass vaccination drives last year which received an overwhelming response from the public. These vaccination venues will improve access to vaccines bringing services closer to the people. I encourage the public to get vaccinated as a sure way to contain the pandemic,” said Dr. Diana Atwine, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health.

The vaccination drive kicked off at Legends bar and restaurant and will run for 14 days. The exercise will be open to everyone receiving first, second and booster shots, however bar staff and patrons are strongly encouraged to participate. Venues will be announced in due course.

Ugandan vocal queen Jackie Chandiru has opened up on her first experience in a rebabilitation center.

Jackie Chandiru has had an unstable music career for years now due to a sorry health condition sparked by drug addiction.

Appearing on a local TV station on Friday after almost two years, the “Gold Digger” singer revealed the unbearable discomfort she faced when taken to rehab.

Jackie also narrates how she managed to escape from rehab and immediately her family commenced a search for her.

I did not like rehab when I was taken there. My life had drastically changed from the comfort of my home to this place. When I was being taken I insulted everyone. I even escaped and there was a search for me,” Jackie Chandiru said on NTV Mwasuze Mutya show.

Jackie Chandiru’s drug addiction life:

Prior to her public reappearance in 2020, Jackie had been taken out of the country to an unknown destination for key medication on drug abuse.

Jackie is recalled in 2016 to have been reported on death bed after being hit hard by an acute illness.

This followed a bizarre scenario where she allegedly passed out at her home in Bukasa.

She was then admitted at Mulago Hospital where laboratory tests revealed drug abuse that she was administering a pain killer named, Pethidine through intra-venous (injection) route.

Samples of the drugs and syringes were discovered at her home and several needle marks along her arms and hands confirmed the findings of the medics.

She was then admitted to Bunamwaya rehab, which she successfully completed was discharged.

However, her worrying health didn’t cease like it was expected as she was later flown out of Uganda for an advanced medical attention.

After almost 5years, she showed up again, recovered to some extent and ready to restart her music career.

Unfortunately, Jackie lost her way again as she was reported to have resumed drug abuse, hence her family relocating her to Nairobi, Kenya.

2021 was, like Azawi sung, her year. The ‘Slow Dancing’ hit maker scooped quite the number of awards to attest to this. And yet even more exciting is the fact that she has started 2022 on an even bigger note. The year, it appears, is going to be an even big year for Swangz Avenue’s star, Priscilla Zawedde stage name Azawi. Her hard work is paying off After quite a long time, and perhaps even for the first time, Azawi is going to perform on the biggest stage yet in her career,” one of her fans tweeted.

Stand-out matches and fairy tale runs

Going into the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire were amongst the favourites. But for one of them, the tournament will come to a premature end on Wednesday as the two powerhouses of African football will face each other in the round of the last 16.

The clash between the Pharaohs and Les Éléphants is the stand-out fixture in the first round of the knock-out competition at the prestigious competition and sees players like Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Elneny and Trézéguet take on Nicolas Pépé, Sébastien Haller and Franck Kessié.

Pépé and Kessié were amongst the scorers in the West Africans’ final group game as a 3-1 win saw Patrice Beaumelle’s side knock out the reigning champions Algeria.

Egypt, meanwhile, have not been particularly impressive and have so far only managed two goals in their three games and were beaten 1-0 by Nigeria in their opening fixture.

They also lost right-back Akram Tawfik in that match with the Al AHly player tearing an ACL, which will see him out of action for several months.

Despite the set-back, he is confident though that the side can go all the way. “All the national team players are playing for the title. We want to make our fans happy, it doesn’t matter who we play against, we are a strong team,” he added.

The Pharoahs’ coach Carlos Queiroz added that it did not matter how they played in the group stages. “Now the real work begins, and now the real competition will begin. It is not important how we start, but it is important how we end, and everything that has passed is a warm-up.

The real tournament begins now, and everything is for the winner and nothing for the loser. We want to face the best because to be the best you have to face the big ones.

If Egypt v Côte d’Ivoire is the stand-out fixture, the game between the hosts Cameroon and footballing minnows Comoros is the stuff that dreams are made of.

The hosts are the top scorers in the competition so far, with captain Vincent Aboubakar grabbing five of the seven goals his team have scored. Having scored in all three of Cameroon’s matches so far, the striker equaled Samuel Eto’s record of finding the net in three consecutive matches at the AFCON finals.

Eto’o also holds the record of top-scoring for Cameroon, having been on target five times in the 2006 and 2008 finals. Standing on five goals already, Aboubakar could well break that record.

The island-state, meanwhile, are participating on the big stage for the first time in their history and only came into contention for a place in the knockout rounds with a stunning 2-1 victory against Ghana, that sent the Black Stars crashing out.

After beating Ghana, Les Coelacantes had to endure some anxious moments to see whether they would qualify as one of the best third-placed team and it was only on Thursday that Algeria’s defeat and Equatorial Guinea beating Sierra Leone in the same group ensured Comoros’ progress.

The Comoros are not the only first-timers that have acceded expectations and moved into the knock-out stage. Gambia, celebrated their first-ever participation in the tournament with a stunning victory against Tunisia – a result that kept the North Africans in third place.

The Gambians face Guinea in Baffoussam on Monday.

Another team enjoying a fairy tale run is Malawi, which is competing at the finals for only the third time. They held the mighty Senegal to a goalless draw in their final group game to earn the right to take on Morocco in the knock-out stages.

Senegal, whom many also see as potential winners, have not been all that impressive and the only time they have been on target so far in the competition is Sadio Mané’s goal seven minutes into injury time against Zimbabwe for a 1-0 win. Two goalless draws in their other game saw them top their group and earned them the right to take on Cape Verde in the knock-out stages.

The only team to win all three group games is Nigeria, prompting coach Augustine Eguavoen to sing his sides’ praises.

People were trying to write Nigeria off.  For the first game, nobody gave us a chance, but we did the job collectively. And then, that game was gone. We had to put it behind us and then focus on the next game. Went ahead to beat Sudan and then put it behind us and then focus on the next game.

Now, people are thinking and starting to respect Nigeria.”

Eguavoen and his squad will have their work cut out for them in the knock-out stage as they face a tricky encounter against Tunisia.

In other matches, Gabon, who are without their inspirational captain Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, open proceedings in Limbe on Monday against Burkina Faso, while Mali take on Equatorial Guinea.

With a place in the quarter-finals at stake in the eight matches, it is hardly surprising that the world will be watching.

And African football fans do not need to miss out as the best African countries go head to head at the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations as the games will be shown live and exclusively on the StarTimes channels.

The partnership comes weeks after the Presidential address announcing the reopening of schools on January 10, almost two years after their closure on account of Covid-19.

As schools reopen, a scholarship initiative such as this one goes a long way in uplifting those who have been severely affected by the impact of the pandemic.
