Comedy Store Uganda has a new segment titled ‘The Chill’ where a panel of comedians will be tackling current affairs but this time with a good dose of humor.

The weekly comedy show launched the new segment as part of its lockdown edition dubbed ‘Stress Clinic’ recorded live at Levels Lounge every Monday.

In place of the live band which was the opening segment pre-Covid, now Alex Muhangi will host a set of celebrities, mostly comedians, to dissect events that made headlines in the previous week. From entertainment, celebrity gossip, funny news items, issues in Parliament, policy and other topics.

During the discussion moderated by Muhangi, the guests give their honest and witty opinion on the different topics usually with a less serious approach from mainstream media. There are also segments where the guests take on funny challenges to test their brains and general knowledge.

Our fans will enjoy ‘The Chill’. There’s a lot happening in the country and it all cannot be accommodated in the comedians’ sets while they do the typical stand-up,” says Alex Muhangi, the Director and host of Comedy Store Uganda.

He adds; “It will be the everyday stories you watch on TV or read in the papers but this time, it’s the comedians weighing in. So, they will be milking every humor they can find.”

On the latest Episode, the fifth, Muhangi is joined by a lineup of seasoned comedians – Anne Kansiime and Kenneth Kimuli ‘Pablo’, as well as socialite and entertainer, Martha Kay. They delve into a hearty conversation on recent events in their lives and other news items.

Previous episodes of ‘The Chill’ which are available on Alex Muhangi’s YouTube channel have featured comedians like Amooti Omubalanguzi, Patrick Salvado, ,Mariachi, Collins ‘Emeka’, Sesabat, Kalela, Akite Agnes among others.

Comedians have always used the stage to channel out their thoughts. Unfortunately, the nature of stand-up is such that this opinion is one way. ‘The Chill’ is a conversation because it is back and forth. It’s unscripted, spontaneous, funny, and it’s about real issues,” adds Muhangi.

News reaching our newsroom is that Ugandan local comedy group, Bizonto have parted-ways.

The four-clustered comedy group that had just of recent lost one of its members, Kafeero Toby alias Dr. T Amale over some internal grievances is yet into another ruination as it splits further into two.

Apparently, some of its members, Gold Kimatono aka (Opeto/Jajja Zonto) and Simon Peter Ssabakaki (Young Zonto/Omuzinyuuzi) claim to have been sacked by the other two members Julius Sserwanja (Kidomoole Ssaabazonto) and Mbabaali Maliseeri (Uncle Luyuguume).

Jajja Zonto and Young Zonto also accuse colleagues for registering a new group ‘Bizonto media communications company’ without their consent and approval.

They were instead shocked when Ssaabazonto and Mbabaali sent them letters to apply to join the newly registered group with unnecessary strings attached on it.

They also reveal that the Ssaabazonto and Mbabaali dismissed them on grounds of shooting a video and uploading it on YouTube for their song “Mailo Land”.

As of now, Jajja Zonto and Young Zonto seem to have endured the humiliation by colleagues as they have also formed a new comedy line ‘The New Zonto’.

However, the four are still workmates at a local radio station, Radio Simba presenting a morning show programme known as “Binsangawano” alongside legendary media personality Omulangira Ndausi.

We will keep you posted

Bundesliga: The world look forward to Der Klassiker, only on StarTimes

There are a number of football matches that grab world-wide attention whenever they are played. Borussia Dortmund against Bayern Munich is one of those.

And certainly in Germany, it gets no bigger than Der Klassiker, especially if it is – as it is this time again – a top of the table clash that would allow the home side to climb above Bayern with a victory.

Going into the game, Bayern are on 31 points – one ahead of their rivals. Third-placed Bayer Leverkusen are already seven points behind the Bavarian giants.

Both Dortmund and Bayern achieved morale-boosting victories on the weekend – Bayern struggling at home to a 1-0 victory against Arminia Bielefeld, while Dortmund won 3-1 at Wolfsburg.

The most important aspect of the Dortmund victory though, was the return of Erling Haaland, who played his first game since September 19, having missed more than a month after injuring his hip flexor.

The 21-year-old, who came on as a late substitute, scored his side’s third goal to take his Bundesliga tally to an incredible 50 goals from 50 matches – six more than any other player had scored at that stage in the history of the league.

With Haaland back in action, Der Klassiker is not only a match-up between the two top clubs in Germany, it is also a match-up between the two best strikers in Germany and possibly even currently in the world.

Dortmund against Bayern, or Haaland against Robert Lewandowski.

Despite playing in just seven matches, Haaland has found the back of the net 10 times this season, while Lewandowski has scored 14 goals from 13 matches.

Last year, Lewandowski topped the scorer charts with a sensational 41 goals from 29 matches, while Haaland was third top scorer with 27 goals from 28 matches.

Dortmund coach Marco Rose is thrilled to have the Norwegian back. “Erling gives us a lot of energy when he’s on the field. He’s a difference-maker that you cannot replace in the long run.”

That notwithstanding, Rose believes his side need to improve. “Everyone’s looking forward to Der Klassiker. Overall, we know that there are still things we want and need to keep working on.

We need to get better if we actually want to be able to pose a real threat to Bayern. When they come to our stadium, then we obviously want to take the chance and be present.”

It was former Bayern Munich striker Mark Hughes, who said that history favours the brave, but in this case, it clearly favours his former club.

Saturday’s game in the Signal Iduna Park is the 105th Bundesliga clash between the two sides and Bayern have not only won 50 of the previous matches, with Dortmund winning 25, they also travel to their rivals on the back of a five-game winning streak.

Presumably the first player on Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team list will be French international Kingsley Coman. The right winger has played in seven Bundesliga Klassiker, winning all of them!

To see whether Coman can make it eight out of eight, all you have to do is tune in to the StarTimes channels, as Africa’s leading digital TV operator will be showing the match live and in HD throughout the continent.

To watch this and much more simply be part of our Christmas campaign named ‘Christmas Level up” that will see our customers win over 200 million in prizes such as Cash, School Fees, Flat Screen TVs, Annual decoder subscription and Many More.

A total of 300 nominees were last week unveiled as the final list in the first ever Janzi Awards during a star-studded event in the Sheraton Hotel gardens.

Speaking about the function, the chairperson for Janzi Award organising committee, Sylivia Owori said they had received over 75000 before reducing it down to 300 from which the winners will be announced next month.

She noted that the awards are meant to celebrate the creative industry and the role it plays in creating employment as well as its contribution to the economy.

These awards were born out of the Gulu arrangements (where musicians visited Gen Saleh) but are also a testament that government is ready to support this industry. Government has finally given us its ear,” she said.

Owori, the director of operations at Operation Wealth Creation explained that the creative arts industry is currently undergoing a revolution but urged the need for unity for all players.

Let us stop fighting each other. The fact that the creative industry has gone to parliament is a big step forward.

This is part of the arts and culture revolution. With the Janzi Awards, we want more creative talents discovered and celebrated.

Let us unite the country through creative arts,”Owori said.

Members of the JAA will then review the nominees after the public vote is closed on December,5 and vote for the winners in all 96 categories.

The public vote constitutes 30% of the overall winner’s vote.

The award is given to performers, who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance in the domain of music and will rotate between the different domains annually.

Pete is a young fast rising gospel singer aged 23 and a graduate of the University of Liberia with a BSc degree in Medical Biology and Chemistry.Graduate of the Rev. Dr. Margaret Court Bible Training Center with a Certificate in Christian Ministry. His love for music started when he was just 12yrs old. His music career started way back around 2014. He officially kicked on when he added his Future Music Group (FMG) first project “Genesis”.

He is a pianist, a rapper, a gospel music producer, a songwriter and an artist. Today his latest song “I Need You” is trending all over music platforms. We managed to track him down and shared his story in a tell all interview

Why did you cut your name short to Pete?

I prefer “Pete” the one syllable word.Because that’s how my dad used to call me when he was alive.

Tell us who exactly Pete Is?

Pete is a young man at age 23 A graduate of the University of Liberia with a BSc degree in Medical Biology and Chemistry. Graduate of the Rev. Dr. Margaret Court Bible Training Center with a Certificate in Christian Ministry.

I’m a pianist, a rapper, a gospel music producer, a songwriter and an artist

Do you have any music background? Like where did your love for music start from?

My love for music started when I was like 12yrs old. I used to listen to music more often especially the RNB genre, as I grew up it became stronger. Throughout, the church has been the right place for my dreams to come true.

Growing up a young boy, what kind of a child were you like?

I was a very shy kid, very respectful, but my Dad always encouraged me to study and be the best in anything I am passionate about. I was a sporty person, played football, basketball, and other sports. Also I was heavily involved with music

From the beginning, was your family supportive of you venturing into music?

Of course my family was supportive as it relates to my music career. I have two of my siblings who sing well, so they were there cheering me up and giving all of the care I needed up till now. They will watch, like and share all of my contents including asking their friends to do the same

Did you study?

Yes I studied.I’ve earned a Bachelor of Medical Science Degree in Biology and Chemistry; Certificate in Christian Ministry

If you studied, why did you choose not to practice what you studied and instead went into music?

I believe that it’s possible to be a medical doctor and still be a musician. Having said that, I’ll keep doing music while I advance my education. I’m passionate about both, and it’s achievable.

Well, let’s talk about your very first song? What was it, what inspired you to record it?

I started writing music sometime now. Since 2014, I would say but it became official when I added my lyrics to Future Music Group’s (FMG) first project “Genesis”. I’m a rapper so I was featured in “I Believe” which was all about encouraging young people that one day their “light will shine, cause the Lord is my side”. It was like a thanksgiving song. Actually I was the last rapper on that song

Since then I started writing more often, and also been featured on other songs as well, like on Christoph D “Over”, and “Thank You Lord” Albums, also Jerezico “Nobody Like You” Album.

My inspiration is basically guided towards Thanksgiving, Salvation, God’s Love, Encouragement, and My Experiences. My desire is to show God goodness through what I do, and my personal experiences of God reflection in my life brings that out well for me.

Officially I released my first single in 2020, titled “I Need You” which was basically about my life and God’s part in it.

How was the feeling the very first time you held a mic in the studio?

I was afraid, but one of Liberia’s top gospel artists, Min. Miracle A. Kettor, was part of the project “Genesis”, So she helped me during those moments and got the best out of me. I also use my friends’ inspiration to guide me through those times. But I was really afraid ahaha.

What studio was that?

T-Bund Studio, the song was engineered and produced by Rawlo, Kingsley Uche (King Bryant), and D Melting K.

And you decided to do gospel music, why? Are you attached to church? Did the Church force you to do gospel music?

My late father was a Pastor, I was brought up in a “very” Christian home. I grew up loving God and experiencing His goodness throughout my life. I choose to do Gospel Music out of my passion for the gospel. I like to share the gospel, that’s why I sing it.

Globally, musicians say, secular music sells more than gospel music, what is your take on this?

I think it’s just about the quality of music that is presented to the audience to listen to. Personally I like secular songs and secular artists. I work with some of them. Their level of creativity is amazing, they work hard because they strive to get and maintain their audience. On the other hand, this is just my opinion, some gospel musicians do not work as hard in getting quality on the track.

Besides, secular music gets more promotion, more plays than gospel music. DJs love the vibe and gospel music is more personal in some cases. Moreover, some would say that christian entities are not investing more into entertainment, but this is a longer debate, as to if they should or why should they… haha

I’m looking forward to working hard to change that narrative. A big part of what I stand for, is that “we should be allowed to be who we are and get the same attention, and opportunities, despite the odds.”

Gospel music has taken a new trend lately. Gospel musicians record love songs, do you intend to mix also?

I think it’s personal preferences and individual artist inspirations, but I’d like to share my experiences and give a message in my work. The gospel is a message I want to reflect in what I do, despite the genre

Anyway, what has been your breakthrough song as of now?

Uh, coming up as an underground gospel artist in Liberia is a huge struggle. I did “I Need You” , it’s now streaming, but I won’t call it a breakthrough yet!

However, people got to know me from the projects I host on my platform, like Pete’s Playlist, My Favorite Hymn I & II, Christ Birth Significance, and Roots.

Just a gees! I’m coming up with something heavy next year, my debut Album, it’s in the making.

Which people do you attach your current success to in the gospel music world?

My team, Future Music Group, Rufus Yaw Gyamfi, my big brother, of course my church GCVMI Victory Life Church, my family is also a big part as well, my friends, and my other family because I don’t have fans, I consider people that follow my content as family because they encourage me in so many ways to keep growing.

Today, the devil has attacked the church, church leaders have broken marriages, gospel musicians are fornicating, what is the future of gospel music in the world?

Hmmm, personally I wouldn’t say much, because there is no need to judge really, but God knows the heart and the weaknesses of every man. It is amazing that He loves us despite all of that. However, we will keep praying that God’s grace will keep being sufficient for everyone who needs it in different circumstances.

Who writes your songs by the way?

Me! I do write all of my songs… I am a writer

What is the message behind your  latest song?

“I Need You” is about how much we cannot do without God! We need God for grace, guidance, protection, and everything, for everything. I basically share my experiences, thanksgiving, and salvation messages. By the way, it’s a rap song.

You look young and handsome, do you have intentions of settling down? Who is your ideal woman?

haha! But yeah sure, when the time is right. It is important to avoid distractions and temptations. haha!

You’re now tapping into different audiences globally, what are your plans in near future musically?

I would like to travel around the world and meet my audiences and share memorable moments with them. It would be a areat opportunity to do so, when I get the invitation.

Which gospel artist in Uganda would you wish to work with?

I’m open to work with any artist from Uganda, it’s important we network! I don’t understand the language but I like the sound of your music.

I listened to Betty Ssenyonjo’s music before and I liked it. and of course I would like to work with her and any other artist from Uganda.

Lastly, tell us where one can find your music?

My single “I Need You” is on all online digital streaming platform, But here are the links:

The Arena Mall, located in Nsambya, has officially opened its doors to the public.

The 13,800 square meter mall features a tenant mix set retail showrooms, a supermarket, coffee shops, pop up markets, a state-of-the-art cinema, food court terrace, restaurants, banks, and general stores.

The mall opens with Carrefour, an internationally operated retail franchise opening its seventh store in Uganda as the mall’s anchor tenant. Other notable brands operating stores at the mall include LC Waikiki, Cafesserie and Frango among others.

According to Marc du Toit, the Head of Retail at Knight Frank who are the property managers, the mall is opening in phases starting at a 30% tenant occupancy, and is expected to reach full occupancy by Easter season in 2022.

“The Arena Mall will in the course of next year change the face of shopping in Kampala with an eclectic mix of international and national retailers. The southern part of Kampala will never be the same.” Marc du Toit noted.

The Arena Mall, located in Nsambya, has officially opened its doors to the public.

The Arena Mall is owned as a joint venture between Chestnut Uganda Limited and South African asset managers, STANLIB.

Charles Odere, one of the board members at Chestnut Uganda Limited told media on Tuesday that they invested over USD 40 Million (about Ugx 144 Billion) in the project.

The construction of the mall started in November 2016, and was set to be commissioned in 2018. However, in 2018, the government halted the construction of the mall, saying the Kampala-Jinja Expressway would pass through part of the land occupied by the mall.

But after negotiations, the government agreed to divert the road.

The construction resumed in 2019 with new opening date set for March 2020. This would however be delayed again by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abel Kaddu approached Hariss International and shared his vision to transform the lives of HIV/AIDS patients. And because his vision aligns well with the company’s CSR culture which focuses on youth empowerment and medical welfare among other things, the company moved to support him.

“COVID 19 has seen many young people become victims of HIV/AIDS and many of them have very limited access to medical supplies and professional counselling. The fact that Abel Kaddu, who is a youth, has garnered the courage to bridge the gap between the support systems and those in need is quite commendable. It re-births the need for us to push awareness towards these challenges.” Said Racheal Luwedde, the Public Relations Manager at Hariss International.

Hariss International together with Abel Kaddu handed over the said items to Ms. Najjemba Elizabeth who is the Advocacy, Communications and Partnerships Manager at TASO MULAGO and Mr Nkabala Robert who is the Centre Program at Manager TASO Mulago.

Mr Abel Kaddu had also independently gathered more items including clothing and household supplies from his community which were also handed over at the same event.

TASO is currently operating 11 centres across the country, and its Mulago clinic was the first to be set up in 1987. By the end of September 2021, the clinic had 8506 active HIV patients on treatment and under its care; of which 183 were adolescents aged between 10-19yrs. This number makes up 2% of the clinic’s patients.

Reach A Hand Uganda, a youth-led non-profit organization, has launched a week-long campaign to raise HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention in commemoration of World AIDS Day.

Dubbed “I Know Kati”, the campaign is held annually and will this year run under the theme “Ending the HIV epidemic by Tearing down inequalities” with an aim to ensure that HIV-related health information and services reach the poor and marginalized.

“Young people from all walks of life require safety and HIV protection, as well as information and services tailored to their specific needs in order to effectively avoid new infections and live longer, happier lives,” James Tumusiime, Country Director, Reach A Hand Uganda told media at the launch.

According to a 2021 report  by Uganda AIDS Commission, Adolescent girls and young women accounted for over 29% of all new HIV infections in 2020, while young women accounted for 79 percent of new HIV infections among young persons aged 15-24 years.

“It goes without saying that campaigns like this one have a huge influence since they promote awareness about HIV/AIDS and the subsequent behavioral changes that are required, resulting in a cascade of transformed lives and generations. We bridge the information gap through the iKnow campaign by conducting community sensitization activities and partnering with health service providers to bring SRHR services like HIV Testing and Counseling closer to them,” James Tumusiime added.

This year’s campaign is inspired by the UNAIDS Global AIDS Strategy (2021-2026), which emphasizes the need to minimize inequities in order to end the HIV pandemic by 2030. The campaign will feature several activities including Free HIV/AIDs testing and counseling, UTI screening and treatment, mental health sessions and dialogues among others in several districts across the country.

I was ready to punch Phina Mugerwa – Halima Namakula

The brawl between Uganda Musicians’ Association’s (UMA) General Secretary Phina Mugerwa Masanyalaze and veteran singer Halima Namakula continues to unfold.

Last week, the two UMA members clashed at Fairway Hotel Nakasero as they threw bitter words to each other, an act that has since been condemned by majority.

This happened when both of them were part the fleet that threw a surprise birthday party for Operation Wealth Creation’s Gen. Elly Kayanja at the hotel.

The cause of the squabble is yet to be established up to date though insiders disclose it was the billions of cash that the Gen. Salim Saleh injected into the UG-Connect Online concerts that have since collapsed.

According to Halima Namakula, her and colleague Phina Mugerwa fell-out over yet undisclosed issues.

Halima says she was determined to litter a number of punches at Phina Mugerwa for disrespecting her in such a manner.

I was ready to throw punches to her, people are fond of taking me for granted because am old,” Halima Namakula told the media.

However, Phina Mugerwa has boldly responded to Halima Namakula’s threats.

During her interview with Bukedde TV, Phina said she didn’t not fight back Halima despite her (Halima) pushing her thumbing her forehead.

Phina asserts that it was because she respects Halima to the extreme and also considers her reputation in the music industry.

I only respected Halima Namakula just because of her status. I was going to slap her to the fullest. Even Gen. Kayanja thanked me for the respect I accorded her because she did not respect herself,” Phina Mugerwa said.

By the look of things, the two are yet to cease the battle despite them sharing almost similar responsibilities in the Ugandan music leadership.

It’s still a miserable moment for singer and songwriter Black Skin, real names Federick Ssenyonga after he has been remanded to Kitalya prison.

The “Njagala kuzina” singer was arrested last Sunday in Makindye – Kampala, taken to Jinja Police station and later jailed on counts of tarnishing singer Bebe Cool’s name and brand.

Black Skin’s awful moments intensified on Wednesday December 1, 2021 when he was paraded before Nakawa court and remanded to Kitalya government prison for one week’s time.

According to Black Skin, he sold the “Gyenvudde” song to Bebe Cool at an agreed fee of UGX. 1Million with an initial deposit of UGX. 500000 and the balance was to be paid within two months.

However, Bebe Cool and team failed to comply to the agreement and instead reverted to acting stubbornly.

This prompted Black Skin to rush to the media and also release his own version of the “Gyenvudde” song.

It should be recalled last month, Bebe Cool trashed the songwriter’s claims and asserted that he was seeking attention.

Speaking to one of Bebe Cool’s managers Kleberson, Black Skin and his team owe Bebe Cool over UGX. 2.4Million paid for almost 8 songs in 2017.

We will keep you posted

I put the ‘G’ in greatness — GNL brags

GNL Zamba

By Our Reporter

GNL Zamba has inflamed the “who is who” debate within the Ugandan hip-hop circles upon declaring himself G.O.A.T (Greatest of all time).

GNL made this declaration through a tweet in which he endorsed the third edition of the Tusker Malt Conversessions, an episode the hip-hop icon is set to headline.

In a supreme feat of braggadocio, the story teller notified fans that the G.O.A.T will be headlining this month’s Tusker Malt Conversessions episode.

The rapper went on to claim the hip-hop throne by declaring himself as “the pinnacle of rap excellence”.

In the tweet, GNL insinuates that his talents surpass rap when he describes himself as a griot. Griots are members of a class of travelling poets, musicians and storytellers who maintain a tradition of oral history in parts of West Africa.

This is a subtle jibe that self-elevates GNL’s artistry from the competition’s, classifying his art form as that from the upper most echelons.

“5th December THE GOAT will be at the @TuskerMaltLager Conversessions. Tune in to witness the man who put the G in Greatness! His eloquence, The pinnacle of Rap Excellence in his Magnificence. It’s the Genius the Griot Ghetto Storyteller!!!” Read his tweet.

Uganda’s hip-hop crown has always been contested, with each and every rapper claiming rights to it. From trailblazers like Navio to hot right now acts like Feffe Bussi, some bars in their songs are spared for claiming the throne.

It is only exciting that GNL, who has reignited the debate, will have an opportunity to prove himself as the rightful emperor as he headlines the first hip-hop edition of the Tusker Malt Conversessions.

The GNL episode, the third episode of the TML conversessions premieres on 5th December, 2021 on Tusker Malt Lager’s official You Tube channel- Tusker Malt Lager Ug. The first two episodes featured vocalists Winnie Nwagi and Naava Grey.
