MTN Uganda has launched a nationwide forest restoration project to symbolise the deepening of its roots in Uganda, a country that has been home to the company since 1998.

Themed “Uganda is Home”, this initiative is in preparation of MTN Uganda listing 20% of its shares on the Uganda Stock Exchange, an opportunity for Ugandans to own a part of the company.

Launched at Kyewaga Central Forest Reserve in Entebbe on Tuesday, the MTN reforestation project, that is being undertaken in partnership with the National Forestry Authority, will see the company restore 220 hectares of forest cover in five Central Forest Reserves (CFRs) across the country.

These include Barifa CFR in Arua, Kagombe CFR in Kibaale, Jubiya CFR in Masaka and Ogera Hills CFR in Serere district. The month-long reforestation project will see 220 hectares of forest cover restored across the country, with every 10 hectares symbolizing one year of MTN’s existence in Uganda so far.

The MTN forest restoration project is the but one of the many initiatives that the company has undertaken over the years to strengthen its relationship with a country that it calls home. It is also a recommitment by the company to play its part in the development of its home, Uganda as envisaged by MTN’s business model that suggests that businesses can only thrive when the communities within which they operate are thriving.

To this effect, MTN has over the years made several Corporate Social Investments in areas of health, education, sports, music and arts among others as a way of supporting communities to thrive in order to create a win-win situation for both the business as well as the citizens of Uganda through its corporate social responsibility arm, the MTN Foundation.

Key among MTN’s corporate social investments is the refurbishment and re-equipment of over 30 health center IIIs across the country to support the government’s strides towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal Number 3 which calls for health and well-being for all.

Furthermore, through the MTN Kampala Marathon, the company has been raised funds that have been sunk into health and wellness projects in various communities across the country for the last 17 years.

MTN has also worked with the PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools) organization to construct classroom blocks in 10 secondary schools located in hard-to-reach areas in order to champion access to affordable secondary school education. This project alone created space for close to 2000 learners in the schools.

Most recently, MTN has been instrumental in complementing the government’s efforts towards combatting the spread of the deadly corona virus as well as supporting communities cope with the harsh effects of the pandemic. MTN has so far injected over 2 billion shillings in the fight against Corona Virus in Uganda.

MTN donated 3 brand new pickups to the National Covid Task Force, partnered with National water and sewerage cooperation to provide clean safe water to the people in water hardened areas to promote hand-washing as a preventive measure towards the spread of the virus, partnered with the Uganda Red Cross Society to monitor SOPs in high traffic areas such as the national borders and markets among others. These initiatives were further complemented by interventions such as the scrapping of MoMo transaction fees, supporting the ministry of health with its call-center infrastructure as well as zero-rating e-learning sites to enable students to carry on with their studies as schools were closed, among others.

Like the reforestation project, all the above activities demonstrate MTN’s long-term commitment as a responsible corporate citizen in Uganda over the years.

Speaking at the forest restoration launch at the Kyewaga Central Forest Reserve in Entebbe, where MTN restored the first 20 hectares of forest cover, Wim Vanhelleputte, the MTN Chief Executive Officer said that MTN Uganda has over the years established its roots in Uganda and that the reforestation project was purely a symbolism of the company deepening its roots in a country that has become home in preparation of MTN Uganda listing 20% of its shares on the Uganda Stock Exchange.

“When the government of Uganda granted us our second operating license in 2020, part of the agreements was that MTN would list on the Uganda Securities Exchange by 2022. To MTN , this is a very welcome step because listing on the Uganda Securities Exchange means that Ugandans will also now share a part of the company.

He further noted that Uganda has been and continues to be a good home to MTN. It is for this reason that MTN has closely worked with the government to complement its efforts in various sectors such as Health, Education, Youth Skilling and ICT, among others.

In his remarks, Tom Obong Okello, the Executive Director of the National Forestry Authority lauded MTN for supporting the government in reinstating forest coverage in the country.

“This is one of the single biggest investments into the sector by any corporate organization so far, we are certain of the tremendous positive impact on the local communities and the entire country”, said Okello.

The “Uganda is Home” campaign comes shortly after MTN Uganda hit a milestone of 15 million subscribers, further deepening its roots in the country as the leading telecom company of choice.

MTN is committed to investing further to serve its ever-growing customer base diligently and to supporting the government’s efforts towards the socio-economic development of the Uganda.

Big Brother Naija

By Our Reporter

Biggie’s prank on the housemates was a success.

Last week, Biggie revealed to HoH, Maria that there would be no evictions on Sunday. However, she was told to pretend like there would be and that she had been given the authority to select the housemates that will be up for possible eviction.

Maria showed her impressive skills as an actress as she convinced the housemate that she would be the one doing the nominations alone. All the housemates were apprehensive and immediately put on their best behaviour to not end up on Maria’s list.

After all was said and done, Maria selected Jaypaul, Pere, Yousef, JMK, Emmanuel and Angel as the six people who least impressed her during the week. During the live show, Ebuka shocked Maria herself by asking her which two of the selected housemates she would like to see go home. Although she hesitated a lot, she eventually picked Yousef and JMK. That was when Ebuka finally revealed it was a prank all along. Much to the relief of Yousef and JMK, who get to spend another week in the house.

During the ‘no-eviction’ Sunday show, Ebuka talked through some of the events of the past week. Boma revealed that if Maria hadn’t nudged him towards picking Jackie B as the person to share the Head of House lounge with, he would have picked Angel instead. He also mentioned that Queen was a possible option.

Saskay let everyone know again that she had no expectations from anyone in the house relationship-wise, and they shouldn’t have from her. This was in reply to Ebuka’s question about her seeming relationship with Cross and Jaypaul.

The show ended with the housemates receiving stern warnings from Ebuka about how they speak about past shows, reunion shows and events outside the house.

Uganda Clays Limited (UCL), the leading manufacturer of quality baked clay building products has announced that the company posted impressive results for the half year 2021 with a net profit of UGX 2.75 Bn.

UCL Managing Director, Reuben Tumwebaze said that the impressive performance is a turnaround from a loss position of UGX 1.4 Billion that was incurred in 2020 in the same period.

“The significant improvement in the performance of the entity is majorly attributed to improved efficiencies in production and an increase in sales volume of 34% to UGX 17.5 Billion for the period compared to UGX13 Billion in the year 2020,” he said.

‘’Despite a challenging first half of the year, mainly from the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected the economy and many businesses, Uganda Clays Limited (UCL) demonstrated resilience, producing positive results as highlighted by the first 6 months performance. We have also made significant strides towards a commitment to implementing a robust strategy in the current economic environment,’’ Mr. Tumwebaze added.

During this period, UCL gross profit increased by 190% to UGX 7.4Billion from UGX 2.5 Billion in 2020, majorly driven by efficiencies and continued cost management measures put in place resulting in controlled production costs. There was also a 13% increase in total Assets to UGX 70.9 Billion, mainly attributable to deliberate investment in two plants at Kajjansi and Kamonkoli.

Why governments should build diplomatic relations with Big Tech companies

Anna Reismann, the Country Director Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung gives her remarks during the Uganda Social Media Conference on Wednesday.

Anna Reismann, the Country Director Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung gives her remarks during the Uganda Social Media Conference on Wednesday.

By Our Reporter

Governments, especially on the African continent, have been urged to forge diplomatic ties with the Big Tech companies such as Facebook and Apple.

This was during a panel discussion at the Uganda Social Media Conference that was held on Wednesday at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

The discussion is timely as it comes when Facebook is currently banned in Uganda. The ban on the social media platform was in retaliation to a takedown of several pro-government accounts on the platform which were accused of trying to manipulate voters online during the general election that was held early this year.

Awel Uwihanganye, the Founder and Senior Director LéO Africa Institute, emphasized that African governments need to be intentional in their diplomatic efforts towards building vibrant relationships with Big Tech companies.

“Government or any other institutions can’t actually disregard the idea of building a vibrant sort of diplomacy with big tech companies,” Awel Uwihanganye said. “The level of how much influence these companies increasingly have on our operations, activities, and now informing public perception is huge.”

He further cited how governments are losing a lot out in revenue as they have failed to secure concessions with these tech giants and thus are not part of the financial transactions happening on their platforms.

“We don’t have much of a choice. We need to find strategic ways of engaging these companies in a way of protecting ourselves, but also making sure we are pushing our own interests.” Uwihanganye added.

The significant role played by these tech companies in our day-to-day lives was reechoed by Anna Reismann, the Country Director Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, who revealed that social media today is being used to inform audiences, increase business opportunities as well as advocating for good causes and seeking support.

She, however, advised users to apply caution while on these platforms. “Data has become a valuable source, and the way we use the data can empower or destroy.” Anna Reismann said. “We should teach everyone in society to be critical with what they do and see online. I think this is the only way to know where their data goes, who uses it and for what.”

Commenting on the social media censorship, Moses Owiny, the ED Centre for Multilateral Affairs Uganda said, “Content regulations should not imply censorship. Good regulation must be able to take into account the competing and diverging interests and requirements of all actors and not be biased and intrusive.”

However, Neema Iyer, the Founder Pollicy Org expressed skepticism on how governments can create effective regulation for emerging technologies as technology is fast changing.

“I think that the way the current legal system is set up does not work with the speed at which technology moves. The legal process to make these laws takes a long time, and by the time you make the law, the tech has changed and the law becomes irrelevant.” Neema Iyer said.

The Uganda Social Media Conference, now in its 6th edition, is organized by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in a bid to bring together key stakeholders from the government, civil society, academia, media and the general public to exchange ideas on the state and impact of social media on politics and society, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges it brings.

One of the hottest emerging communities in music today, East Africa’s fast-rising underground music movement, and Nyege Nyege’s powerful influence in the region and beyond is explored in the latest episode of SoundCloud’s music discovery series, “SCENES”. “SCENES: East African Underground” and “Music for the Eagles”, a first-in-the series companion album released with famed Nyege Nyege Tapes, starts streaming today on SoundCloud and all major streaming platforms.

As a global platform for connectivity, collaboration and community, SoundCloud plays a unique role in spotlighting next-gen music landscapes. In “SCENES: East African Underground” and on “Music for the Eagles”, discover the thriving artist communities who find each other IRL, via the Nyege Nyege collective and on SoundCloud who are forging their own path and alternative sounds out of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

SCENES’ and compilations like ‘Music for the Eagles’ are focused on driving global music discovery around the trailblazing communities of artists and passionate music fans who are propelling mainstream music trends of tomorrow,” said Leon Sherman, Director of Editorial, SoundCloud. “From first spotlighting the genre-bending scene, Digicore, to PC Music and Hyperpop, which have swept popular music this year, we are excited to now amplify the future-facing sounds of the East African underground movement and the incredibly influential Nyege Nyege Collective.”

“Nyege Nyege and SoundCloud share a love for underground music and community building,” says Derek Debru, co-founder of Nyege Nyege. “’Music for the Eagles’ is both music that engages audiences into new sonic territories and also an opportunity for many emerging artists to get a formidable spotlight to further their career and engage with global audiences.”

“SCENES: East African Underground” tells the story of a group of innovative artists building a creative community and sharing it on a global scale, powered by future-forward music pushing the boundaries of hip-hop, experimental electronics, dance, and sounds from throughout the region. The video features commentary from these artists and others creating diverse, multi-faceted sounds across the scene, including: Vibrant, bass-heavy trailblazer Kampire; Genre-bending, globally celebrated DJ Slikback; Respected, razor sharp MC Aunty Rayzor; sonic sound producer KMRU; Kampala-based label, collective, and Nyege Nyege Festival co-founder Derek Debru; and, US-based artist and advocate for the movement Suzi Analogue.

My exposure to the underground electronic music scene in Kampala is when I really started to be free,” Slickback says in the episode, and adds, “It’s unbound in the way artists express themselves and respond to sounds.”

With 14 never before released tracks from emerging scenes of the continent, “Music for the Eagles” features exclusive works from local heroes, and introduces up-and-coming talents representing a variety of unique genres. Artists featured include local heroes such as Nairobi-based rapper, singer and producer Boutross, Traditional adungu and nanga harp master and singer, Otim Alpha and Tanzanian producer Jay Mitta, with his unique take on the sound of singeli. The album also introduces up and coming talents like Kenyan future-pop artist KABEAUSHÉ, Ugandan grime, hip-hop and punk master MC Yallah, and features artists beyond East Africa including Durban’s Phelimuncasi with their signature style of Gqom, along with many more from a diverse range of underground scenes.

East Africa is bubbling with so much music right now, and young people are taking risks and finding new sounds, people are starting to be more curious about each other and mingle their scenes,” said MC Yallah of her sound on the album. “That’s why I wanted to mash up my hip hop vibe with Nairobi’s metal sound.”

About “SCENES”

Rising communities and culture-shifting collectives form and grow on SoundCloud and continue to drive what’s next in music — from SoundCloud’s early days as the home to the hottest DJs and artists to giving birth to brand-new sounds and genres (like SoundCloud rap). SoundCloud’s original series “SCENES” explores the unique elements of these collectives and movements — how they are shaped by a sense of community versus by their sounds or genre, the artists gaining traction are younger than ever and more DIY, and the 3-minute song is no longer standard.

Check-out all SCENES episodes, Personal Computer Music, an innovative hyperpop movement brought to life by groundbreaking producer, singer and songwriter A.G. Cook and his record label PC Music, and Digicore, shaped by a young, diverse, internet-inspired generation of DIY creators. Stay tuned for updates on “SCENES” via SoundCloud’s Youtube channel, Instagram, and Twitter.

Just a few weeks after disappointment at the recent Euro finals France, Spain and Portugal will have an opportunity to put that behind them as the European World Cup 2022 qualifiers continue.

The fourth round of matches kick-off on Wednesday, with France against Bosnia-Herzegovina being one of the stand-out games.

Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps made several changes to his squad for the Group D clash, leaving out Olivier Giroud, but recalling Manchester United’s Anthony Martial. He also called up four uncapped players.

Deschamps told reporters that the decision to omit Giroud was not an indication that the forward no longer had a role to play. “Olivier is still available, his situation has changed with his transfer to AC Milan where for now he has more playing time.

It’s a sporting choice of the moment in a competitive environment with the return of Anthony Martial,” he said.

Three days after taking on the Bosnians in the Stade de la Meinau in Strasbourg Les Bleus face a difficult away game in Kiev against Ukraine.

The Ukrainians qualified top of their group ahead of Portugal for Euro 2020, but have only three points from their opening three games in the World Cup qualifiers, after drawing all matches 1-1, including disappointing home draws against Kazakhstan and Finland.

Also on Wednesday, Portugal face the Republic of Ireland in Faro in Group A. Ireland were stunned 1-0 at home by Luxembourg in their last match and having lost both games they have played, Stephen Kenny’s side are in desperate need of three points.

For Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo Wednesday’s game and the match six days later against Azerbaijan will be another opportunity to break the all-time international scoring record.

Ronaldo, who is on the verge of re-joining Manchester United, currently stands on 109 goals, as does Iran’s Ali Daei.

In Group B, Sweden welcome Spain in a top-of-the-table clash in Solna on Thursday. The Swedes are a point behind the Spaniards, but have a game in hand and will find themselves in a very strong position should they make it three wins out of three.

Euro finalists England top Group I with nine points from three matches and are two points ahead of Hungary, whom they face in Budapest on Thursday.

Three Lions coach Gareth Southgate has given a first call-up to Patrick Bamford, rewarding the striker for his impressive performances with Leeds in the Premier League last season.

There is an opportunity for Patrick as a No9,” Southgate said. “His progress with Leeds has been excellent, he was very close at the end of last season. We worked with him at under-21 level, so we know him anyway, and it is a special moment for his family.”

England also face Andorra at Wembley Stadium on Sunday and Poland in Warsaw three days later.

The two unbeaten teams in Group C – Euro champions Italy and Switzerland – face each other in Basel on Sunday. Italy, who are also taking on Bulgaria and Lithuania during the international break, have won their three games, while Switzerland have won both their matches.
