Mobile subscribers are making more phone calls — UCC Report

By Our Reporter

Mobile subscribers are increasingly communicating via voice calls and this is thanks to promotions by telecom operators, a recent report from Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) indicates.

UCC, the telecom regulator recently released the quarter one report for 2021 which revealed that between January to March, mobile subscribers made more phone calls during the period compared to December.

“…the sector recorded a total of 15.5 billon billed minutes up from 14.8 billion minutes recorded in the quarter ending December 2020. Subsequently, this resulted to a 5% quarter to quarter aggregate growth in traffic from 3% posted in the preceding quarter,” UCC revealed in the report.

UCC attributed the performance to the pricing promotional offers and a slight subscription growth. For instance, MTN Uganda recently announced that the telecom hit 15million subscribers.

On-net voice calls, which stand for calls made on the same network contributed the bulk of the talk time.

The report indicates that the market averaged 5.1 billion on net minutes per month during the quarter, with an on-net monthly traffic peak in March of 5.2 billion minutes.

The dominance of on-net traffic is attributed to the pricing differential caused by discounted promotional bundles coupled with spend and usage profiling offers by the telecom operators.

MTN currently has different voice bundles under the My PakaPaka promotion, where MTN to MTN voice calls are discounted to make the service affordable for customers.

Recently MTN refreshed the promotion to allow customers enjoy even more minutes at the same cost.

For instance, MTN currently offers 45 on-net minutes at UGX1000, 30 on-net minutes at UGX750 and 20 on-net minutes at UGX600.

Somdev Sen, MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer said promotions such as My PakaPaka have enabled customers make phone calls to loved ones at cheap rates which is especially critical during the pandemic period as many people need to save money for consumption.

“We are cognizant of the current challenging times and because of this, as MTN, we sought to provide some sort of relief to our customers by ensuring they can afford voice call services at a reasonably priced rate. This will allow them channel some of their savings towards supporting themselves and their families during these tough times,” he explained.

He went on to say that MTN strives to boost inclusion and that not only includes financial inclusion but also communication.

“You need to keep in touch with your loved ones during these times. It is important to communicate with all your people especially at this time when movement is very limited. We commit to always provide quality and affordable services to Ugandans,” he said.

Off net minutes per month however averaged 52.4 million during the quarter, with an off-net traffic peak in January of 54.5 million minutes.

Voice calls have been steadily dropping in price in comparison to the olden days when a unit of talk time cost above Shs300.

With the increase in adoption of telephony services, Ugandans are expected to enjoy affordable services even more.

Since 2017, US California based Ugandan musician and philanthropist Desire Luzinda under the Desire Luzinda Foundation chose to make it a norm to celebrate her birthday with the people in need. This year 2020 has seen Desire celebrate it by giving a hand to a few individuals that were in dire need and nonetheless this year saw us back to uplift a child Children’s Orphanage in Lungujja. Desire Luzinda, through Desire Luzinda Foundation International (DLFI) partnered with Hairby Zziwa salon and academy and Wahl, a hair cutting machine manufacturer based in the US to give the children a haircut and lunch to celebrate yet another year.

Giving a meal or helping someone in need on such a special day is the most fulfilling thing I have ever experienced. I thank God for the provision and as long as I live, I hope to always do that and more by the Grace of God.” Desire explained her mission on a phone call since she didn’t make it to Uganda for this year’s celebration.

For many years, DLFI continued to work with surrounding communities on several projects such as education, livelihood, agriculture, and cultural exchange.

Desire Luzinda has grown in leaps and bounds since her breakout, transitioning from the archetypal regular celebrity to an inspirational artiste and goodwill ambassador.

It’s through these activities that she managed to develop an impressive network of experienced, professional, local, and international staff well placed to partner with funding partners and other collaborating service providers.

DLFI’s broader objective is to attract funding from her growing circle of friends, family and a rich haul of well-wishers across the global. Desire wants to tell her story, and she hopes to piggyback DLFI’s success on her global appeal.

Songstress, Nina Kankunda famously known as Nina Roz has opened up on how she swiftly quit Black Market Records without any obstruction as most artists have encountered with the label.

According to the “Enyonta”, she had exhaustively worked with the America-based record label as agreed in the contract and there was nothing more pending.

I felt I had completed my contract and my entire services with Black Market Records. I owe them nothing and neither do they,” Nina Roz said while on a live TV interview.

Nina also stressed the fact that she wouldn’t withstand the disrespect from Black Market especially in the recent saga where the label was battling singer Bruno K over “Nipe Love” song ownership.

I’m no longer work with. I felt disrespected at a certain point, and as an artist, I don’t work where am not respected coz am a person who respects people.”

Nina Roz joined Black Market Records in 2020 after her marital engagement with the label’s music producer and singer Daddy Andre.

However, Nina’s life at the label has been miserable for the last three months after breaking up with Daddy Andre.

We will keep you posted

He might not have gotten enough attention here in Uganda as he requires and massive air plays like other musicians, but eventually Bell Rey is one of the most talented artists representing Uganda in the Diaspora, United States to be specific

Bell Rey is a Ugandan born Boston based artist who moved to the U.S at age 8 with his younger sister and mother in hopes of a better life.

Bells mother was a gossip singer in church and his Father a preacher in Uganda. So seeing his mother and father at church every Sunday definitely had an impact on him that pushed him towards music.

He has been into music for a while and his versatility has earned him a place in people’s hearts. He can comfortably do music in different genres like; hip-hop, RnB, and Afro-beat. Using these genres, he blends them and makes whats he refers to as “Tender Aggression” . And that simply means is being balanced, being an “Every Man” which Bell Rey illustrates in his music.

His Album Enjovu consists of 10 songs and its already receiving massive plays all over music platforms

Here is Never Mind, on of fans’ favorite off his Album

Here’s all you need to know about the “One More Push” COVID-19 Campaign

MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Wim Vanhelleputte

By Our Reporter

MTN Uganda recently rolled out another Covid-19 prevention campaign dubbed ‘One More Push” with the aim of strengthening and reinvigorating the masses in the fight against the deadly disease.

The “One More Push” campaign is spearheaded by The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, (Africa CDC) and pan-African operator MTN Group across their Market footprint including Uganda.

We caught up with the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Uganda, WIM VANHELLEPUTTE, to tell us what the campaign means for the country that is battling a more deadly wave of the virus.

Please tell us what “One More Push” is all about

The One More Push Campaign is a joint campaign between The Africa Centres for Disease Control and MTN Group, which includes MTN Uganda. It is a motivational call across the region for the masses to keep up the spirited fight against COVID-19 by urging them to give it one more push through continuing to diligently wear their masks, washing and sanitising their hands, practicing social distancing as well as getting vaccinated against the deadly virus.

By now, many people already know the SOPs. What was the motivation behind this campaign?

Its true many people are aware but a reminder of vigilance is called for especially now as we are facing a new deadly wave of the disease. Therefore, ‘One More Push’, simply put is a renewed drive to encourage the public not to give up now. The campaign was informed by the intensity of the new wave of the disease.

Like many countries across the continent, Uganda has been hit with a more ravaging wave of the virus that has seen the country register more deaths than before. Moreover, this is happening at a time when masses suffer from increased apathy, mask fatigue, vaccine myths and misinformation, and an overall concern about vaccine efficacy and safety. That is why Africa CDC and MTN felt the need to re-sensitize the masses about the new wave of the disease.

Last year, MTN Group, including MTN Uganda had the Wear it for me campaign. Was it successful?

Yes. It was very successful and well-received by the public. For the case of Uganda, we partnered with government to accelerate mask wearing, and together with fellow South African companies based in Uganda under the Forum for South African Businesses in Uganda, we donated masks to the vulnerable communities and encouraged the people to wear them alongside the other SOPs to curb the spread of the virus.

So, the One More Push Campaign is a build up on the Wear it for me campaign and the other initiatives we have undertaken, in our effort to end this pandemic.

What is the One More Push campaign’s most important call to action?

It is a consolidated reminder to the public to remain vigilant by adhering to the SOPs even when they may feel tired and somewhat bored by the whole routine of wearing a mask, handwashing, sanitizing and social distancing. We are also urging people to get vaccinated so that we can foster herd immunity.

As I earlier said, many of us are faced with myths and misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccines and their overall efficacy and safety. As such, this ‘One More Push’ Campaign that is spearheaded by the Africa CDC in partnership with MTN is aimed at complementing the ‘Adapted Africa Joint Continental Strategy for COVID-19 Pandemic’ of the African Union that calls for a wholesome fight against COVID-19 through strict adherence to the COVID-19 SOPs as well as vaccination to build immunity against the virus.

Apart from these campaigns, what other initiatives has MTN undertaken to support its customers in the fight against COVID-19?

MTN has been actively engaged in supporting its customers in the fight against COVID-19, both at continental and national level. Last year MTN Group donated US$25 million for COVID-19 vaccines for health workers as well as championing mask wearing and donating masks to communities across its footprint.

In Uganda, our interventions went beyond cash donations; from using our infrastructure, services, products, equipment to our expertise in order to fight this deadly disease.

In total, we spend over UGX 2 billion in cash towards the fight against COVID-19 inclusive of activities such as a partnership with the Red Cross society to carry out screening in high-risk places like markets and boarder points.

We also partnered with National Water and sewerage corporation to provide water points in water-hardened areas around Kampala to support handwashing among several other donations as well as zero rated services to our customers.

As a profit-making business, what does MTN gain from these capital-intensive Campaigns against COVID-19?

As a corporate citizen wherever we exist, we believe that caring for the communities that we serve is paramount to our business since MTN’s fortunes are closely tied to the health and prosperity of our customers and the public at large.

Like I have always said, corporate responsibility is a win-win. When businesses like MTN support communities, the communities flourish and in turn support the business, and that healthy cycle continues.

What are your last remarks to the public?

With the new waves of COVID-19 sweeping across the country, we cannot overstate the importance of every single one of us doing our best right now to keep the virus at bay.

I encourage the people of Uganda to remain vigilant in fighting COVID-19. Let us limit our movements as urged by the government, wear our masks the right way, wash or sanitize our hands and maintain social distancing.

But above all, I remind the members of the public who are eligible for the vaccine to get vaccinated as this will help as a country to foster herd immunity so we can quickly return to the ‘old normal’ and live our lives as we used to.

We all need to keep focused on overcoming COVID-19. I therefore implore everyone to keep up the fight. Let’s all give it one more push.
