The program will benefit 600 SMEs in six districts of Uganda namely; Kampala, Wakiso, Masaka, Mbarara, Jinja and Lira selected on the basis of economic sector, turnover, number of employees and the threat arising out of the pandemic on the business survival and continuity.

Prior to the training, a needs assessment will be conducted for each participating SME to tailor elements of the training to the participants and will cover topics of digitization, effective people management, leadership and strategic thinking, financial management, fraud prevention and cyber security.

The program will run for a period of 3 months, kick starting on 1st November with participating SMEs required to attend the training for a minimum of three days a month, upon which a certificate will be awarded on successful completion of all the modules.

While launching the project, Ibrahim Senyonga, the General Manager MTN Enterprise Business Unit reaffirmed the Telecom’s commitment to supporting the communities in which it operates.

“At MTN we believe that our business can only thrive in thriving communities and therefore the sustainability of our business is dependent on the success of the community in which we operate. While many big businesses have continuity plans, the small businesses are usually unprepared for times such as this and therefore lack the tenacity to bounce back after such a huge set back,” Senyonga said.

He further noted that MTN Uganda, the leading provider of technology and business solutions in the country has decided to partner with Smart 24 TV, a business dedicated channel to provide a solution among many others out there to make a difference in the SME sector which plays a crucial role in our country’s economic growth and development.

The training will be delivered online and aired live on Smart 24 TV, with recordings of the sessions airing at different times for the benefit of those that would have missed the live broadcast.

Speaking at the training launch at the Smart 24 TV studios in Kikuubo, downtown Kampala, Hon. Nathan Nabeta, the Chairman of Smart 24 TV thanked MTN Uganda for standing with the local business community and urged SME owners to seize this opportunity to learn and turnaround their businesses.

“We are so grateful for the support from MTN that will enable us to run this program that will go a long way to equip many SMEs navigate the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has brought forth. Some businesses have shut down with others hanging by the thread; I am confident that this training will not only equip them with techniques that will give them another lifeline but also propel them to grow.” Hon Nabeta said.

Entries are invited from SMEs registered and operational in the aforementioned six districts starting until the 31st of October 2020 (the registration deadline).

By Our Reporter

MultiChoice Uganda, through its local content flagship channel, Pearl Magic has donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) worth Ugx 281.3 million (US$75,000) to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the National COVID-19 Task Force intended for people in high-risk areas and those at the frontline in support towards the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking during the handover, Colin Asiimwe, Head of Marketing appreciated the government, the medical fraternity, private sector and the general public for their collective efforts towards the fight against COVID-19 in these unprecedented times. He further stressed that, MultiChoice Uganda had made previous interventions to support the cause and has another contribution to deliver.

He explained that, “the support we bring through this donation comes in the form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that includes a total of 7,500 KN95 Face Masks and 7,500 Disposable Isolation Gowns – valued at USD 75,000 (Ushs. 281.3 million).”

“Our core focus in this donation is the delivery of these PPEs to people in areas of high risk of the virus contagion in this case being Kampala which has so far recorded the highest number of deaths and infections,” Asiimwe remarked, adding that, “We shall also focus on medical workers at the frontline. Their need for this equipment is evidenced by available May, 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) statistics that illustrate that more than 90,000 health workers globally have been infected with the virus despite being preventable.”

He further highlighted that MultiChoice Uganda also gave a cash contribution of Ugx 10 million towards the Relief Fund, to assist with efforts in the fight against Covid-19.

Ms. Dorothy Kisaka, the Executive Director, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), applauded MultiChoice Uganda for the highly targeted and very timely contribution, noting that “we are pleased to receive the PPE’s from MultiChoice Uganda, a brand that has operated in the country for a long time and has Ugandans at heart, evidenced by initiatives like this and others like the dedication of a channel, Pearl Magic to air solely Ugandan-only content.”

“The contribution they have made today towards the safety and well- being of all Ugandans in times like these, is a symbol that we are together in this fight. I want to thank them for the generous contribution and showing solidarity towards fighting this disease and keeping Ugandans safe,” she added.

Dr. Zalwango Sarah, Ag Medical Services at KCCA commented that, “The rise in number of confirmed cases and deaths in the country requires more strategic and long-term support from partners. This ultimately includes support even to the health workers, some of who have contracted the disease in the course of their life-saving work.”

“Following the ease of the lockdown, Kampala city has become a high-risk area recording the highest number of deaths, therefore, it is important for everyone to wear a mask at all times and efforts to make that possible are welcome,” Dr. Zalwango stated.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues around the globe with more than 40.1 million infections and over 1.11 million reported deaths, Uganda has noticeably put up a good fight with more than 7,066 recoveries out of over 10,788 cases. Despite some deaths registered the recognition of Uganda among the top 10 countries in terms of suppressing the coronavirus spread is a green light in the struggle.

Wife to Presidential aspirant Joseph Kabuleta, Rebecca Kabuleta drops 4 track EP “Sounds of Heaven”

By Reporter

‘Sounds of Heaven’, a debut four-track Extended Play (EP) by songstress Rebecca Ssuubi Kabuleta, brings a distinctive freshness to the gospel music arena.

The delicate balance between breath-taking vocals, orchestral instrumentation and a contemporary vibe awakens the inner kid in you and propels your imaginative faculties into a world of fantasy.

‘I Hear Angels’—one of the songs—launches you towards a mysterious wilderness filled with hushed angelic voices that gradually intensify. For more than half a minute there, your anticipation builds as you wonder what’s coming up next.

Suddenly, a heavy pounding of drums is quickly followed by a moment of quiet. But that only plunges you further into a daze of suspense. Thankfully, Rebecca comes to your rescue. She musically describes the scene and helps you appreciate the place you’ve been led to.

The fourth minute presents an opportunity to flaunt her vocal prowess and she completely nails it. With beautiful rhythmic bends, Rebecca paints you a colorful picture of the rainbow that surrounds the LORD and fills His Temple!

This piece climaxes in an explosion of deeply soulful, angelic descants that are sure to blow you away. That’s only a tip of the iceberg, though.

‘Fairest LORD Jesus’ introduces with a grand piano accompanied by a few faint and scattered classical guitar notes in the background. If you’re a guitarist, you’ll probably want to hear some more.

The song soon escalates and as you approach the close of the second minute, Rebecca returns with a solo. Her fluted diction is so crisp; you could almost hear her throat muscles move.

She then skillfully sneaks—it’s possible to think she was caught unawares—into “Glory and Honor” with a slightly husky but smooth voice, and then a subtle yet powerful vibrato at “Praise, Adoration”.

The opening scenes of ‘I will bless the LORD’ might get you mistaking it for a soundtrack to a Disney movie! Understandably so, because the intro assembles virtually all the elements of an orchestra: low brass, cinematic drums, strings, indistinct angelic voices and whatnot.

In the second minute of the song, you are ushered into what seems like a cathedral set somewhere in Rome. The sounds emerging from this place are nothing short of wondrous. You are listening to an all-female choir, and they’re so unforgiving when smashing those high soprano notes!

The orchestral interlude is such a twist. It drags you out of the cathedral, catapults you into space and makes you feel like you’re flying over vast and lush grasslands.

There’s a surprise to look out for in the concluding fifth minute. Charming bonus!

In ‘Sweet Jesus’, expect some more Rebecca, warm saxophone lines by Joseph Sax, marching snare drums and, of course, angelic undertones from the unbelievably talented choir that brought a wealth of musical pedigree to this production.

Sounds of Heaven makes for much more than tranquilous relaxation. It should eventually lead up to a tangible experience of the Heavenly realm for you.

The production of this EP is straight out of the creative mind of JoshSB.

Sounds of Heaven can be found on all major music distribution platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Apple Music, Spotifyand; SoundCloud:https://m.soundcloud.com/ssuubi-rebecca/sets/sounds-of-heaven, ReverbNation: https://www.reverbnation.com/rebeccaskabuleta.

By Our Reporter

Letshego has handed over poultry projects to respective farmers and beneficiaries that took part in the “Improving Life Campaign” (ILC). This is in line with Letshego’s Strategic Social Investment (SSI) policy, which aims at bettering livelihoods of the low and middle-income communities.

The ILC campaign, picked exemplary and model farmers from the four regions in the country that were already existing Letshego customers and were undertaking initiatives that were bettering themselves and the communities within which they resided.

“The ILC project actually spanned across all our 11 markets in Africa. For Uganda, in light of the fact that agriculture is the backbone of our economy, it is no wonder that we opted for a project in this space. Furthermore, we didn’t only want to reward respective individuals but also for those individuals to better their communities with the initiative we were presenting them with,” Aijukwe Giles, the CEO elaborated.

To select the ideal entrepreneurs for participation, Letshego appointed a robust panel of judges to select the final winners; they comprised of Dr. Wilbrod Okecho (Microfinance consultant), Mr Athanasius Mwesigye (Director Komunda Investment Ltd) and Mrs. Flavia Bwire. A total of 1167 applicants made their submissions where four were identified from every region (Northern, Central, Eastern and Western).

Each of the finalists was handed a state of the art poultry shelter, 1000 one-day old chicks, feeds to last 6 months, training on poultry project management and welfare of the fowls by Dr. Ssewagude (veterinary expert) as well as enterprise mentorship. Letshego went on to provide additional support and continued to supervise their progress on a month-on-month basis.

“Letshego is built on great service and building lasting relationships with suppliers and customers, and like many other companies that undertake CSR projects- our core beliefs and values help us to achieve this. We feel that we can enhance relationships within communities by acting responsibly and selflessly to make a better place to work and a better community to live in,” Aijukwe concluded.

Baobab Circle’s answer to the desperation of people wanting to access medical advice has been to expand its Afya Pap service to MTN subscribers who can now call and speak to a doctor with a click of a button.

The patient can use one platform to Call a Doc (live online voice call consultation), ask a Doc (consultation via chat/text messaging), as well as take and track their readings (blood glucose and pressure) with Smart devices.

Fintech, bank partnerships will deepen financial inclusion — MTN’s Stephen Mutana

Stephen Mutana, the General Manager, Mobile Financial Services at MTN UgandaBy Our Reporter

Before MTN put the idea of mobile money to life, the methods of sending and receiving money were not only informal but also very risky. At the time, financial services were largely limited to urban areas. Starting with peer to peer or sending, receiving, and withdrawing money, no one would have anticipated the extent to which mobile money would transform lives.

Stephen Mutana, the General Manager, Mobile Financial Services at MTN Uganda tells us how mobile money penetration has expanded the access of modern financial services to the rural and unbanked population.

What is your take on Fintech as far as financial inclusion is concerned?

Financial technologies promise to increase efficiency in delivering financial
services and promote financial inclusion. Currently, mobile penetration in the country is higher than banking, which provides telecoms with an edge for marketing financial products to their clients through greater reach. The service has been a major driver of financial inclusion in the last decade. Mobile money currently allows the unbanked people to use their phones as a bank account, to deposit, withdraw, and transfer money with their handset. People can also use mobile systems to pay utility bills and pay for goods in merchant shops.

Will the integration of Fintech and banks solve Uganda’s current financial inclusion paradox?

MTN believes that the power of partnerships should never be underestimated. As the central bank finalizes the National Payment Systems Act regulations, we foresee more possibilities for partnerships between banks, Fintech, and Mobile Network Operators that will further drive financial inclusion. We improve on partnerships focusing on leveraging on existing infrastructure such as distribution systems sides for cost effective operations. Partnerships that aim to drive innovation by exposing prebuilt APIs. For instance, access to accounts, transaction history, know your customer, or metadata enhancements.

How has MTN managed to develop a seamless Digital payment Solutions system?

As a leading telecom operator on the continent, MTN has taken a global view on developing platforms. We are focusing more on solutions that enable many players or stakeholders to come on board or simply plug into our system. MTN launched the Open API (Application Programming Interface) two years ago to enable digital payments and collections. An API is a computing interface that allows two applications to talk to one another. For instance, when you go shopping online and use mobile money to settle a payment, you are using an API. We have over 100 partners on the API platform. Active MTN Mobile Money users have grown to over 7.4 million. MTN Mobile Money services have grown to include bill payments, group salary payments, and school fees payments.

As the biggest Fintech in the country, what does MTN think about the National Payment Systems Law?

The National Payments Systems Act, 2020 (Act), effectively became law when it was assented to by the President in July this year. The law regulates operators of payment systems, payments service providers, issuers of payment instruments and issuers of electronic money. We think the law seems to be comprehensive enough to plug some of the regulatory loopholes that have been prevalent among players in the payments space.

As the novel COVID-19 continues to spread, the race is on for innovators to design products that will add another layer of safety to support how payments for goods and services are settled. Therefore, clear regulation and
legislation are key in defining a sustainable approach within which payment service providers and consumers interact, exchange data and make payments.

Give us your thoughts about how this law might impact the smaller Fintech in the country.

With regulations in place, smaller Fintech firms which have enabled value addition on our products and services will find it a lot easier to integrate into MTN API platforms. There will also be deliberate support from MTN to Fintech partners that work in areas of national development plan priorities such as healthcare, agriculture, job creation, and education.

Although we welcome the move to regulate these smaller Fintech firms, a tiered regulatory approach will spur the innovation space. Innovation and technology have always moved faster than regulations.

What is the way forward for the smaller companies as far as the law is concerned?

We encourage our regulators to have a light touch to a regulatory approach that can improve access to technologies but also spur innovations. Most importantly though, regulating the sector will drive confidence and trust in Fintech products and services. Customers and suppliers, both local and foreign will have greater clarity on products and safeguard customer funds.

As a leading player in the Fintech sector, we think this will allow us a greater scale.

What are your final remarks?

The transformative role of mobile financial services will depend largely on whether stakeholders private, government or international organization invest in approaches to solve every day problems. Also, partnerships are key if we want to progress. Behind the success story of mobile money, MTN has had partnerships with a number of Fintech firms that have enabled the technological capabilities needed to make the financial services a success.

As for my dad, he had the biggest sound system in the whole village.” King solo describing of his childhood. “The sound system would attract and alert them of his presence. They would then gather in numbers at home and dance all night as I sneaked a peek at them because my father could not let me join them at my young age.

Along his solo music career he joined Masters Music in 2017 which has been his musical home ever since.

Under the Masters Music flagship, he has worked with various artists such as Washington, Khalifah Aganaga, Sama Sojah, Andy Music etc.

King Solo tries to create a vibe that suites everybody which pushes him to create the best and also experiment with his versatility/diversity as he fuses different genres and languages.
