Cipla Chairman, Dr Yusuf Hamied honored with road

Cipla’s chairman Dr. Yusuf Hamied

By Our Reporter

Uganda is honouring Cipla’s chairman Dr. Yusuf Hamied by renaming the road in which the CiplaQCIL facility is based after him specifically for his ground-breaking humanitarian approach in providing access to quality, affordable healthcare.

Considered a visionary for over 60 years in the Indian pharmaceutical industry, Dr Hamied has dedicated his career to serve humanity, directly combating the most threatening diseases and epidemics humans have ever encountered. His clear passion for expanding access to medicines has saved millions of people living in some of the most vulnerable populations in the world. Because of his passion for people, Dr Hamied embodies the ethos of “Caring for Life” and helping to make a difference in the life of a patient.

Dr Hamied graduated with honours from the University of Cambridge in 1957 and completed a PhD in 1960 under the tutelage of the Nobel Laureate Alexander Todd. Many honours have followed including being elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society in 2019 for his service to the cause of science. During his career, Dr Hamied commercially synthesised many essential drugs in diverse therapy areas including steroids, antibiotics, HIV/AIDS, respiratory and oncology drugs.

Amongst the many essential drugs that he has commercially synthesised, perhaps the most important one for Uganda and Africa has been the world’s first ever recommended fixed dose combination to treat HIV/AIDS. It was made available at less than $1 per day compared to over the $12,000 per patient per year prevailing in most countries throughout the world and saved the lives of millions of people across the developing world.

Together with cooperation from the Ugandan government, Cipla established the CiplaQCIL facility in Kampala – one of the first World Health Organization (WHO) GMP approved factories in sub-Saharan Africa producing antiretrovirals and anti-malarial medicines. This went a long way to helping Uganda become more self-sufficient in healthcare, ensuring that vital medicines were available at affordable prices with guaranteed security of supply.

Dr Hamied has always been outspoken on his views on the prices charged for innovative medicines by the major pharmaceutical companies and this quote of his to Forbes.com sums his ethos up, “My idea of a better-ordered world is one in which medical discoveries would be free of patents and there would be no profiteering from life or death.”

CiplaQCIL Chairman, Emmanuel Katongole said, “We are proud and honoured that the contribution to saving millions of African lives through making antiretrovirals available at a cost of a $ a day by Dr Youssef Hamied has been recognized in Uganda by the naming the road in his name on which the CiplaQCIL facility is situated.”

Team Uganda to participate in the Sub-Sahara African finals of the Huawei Global ICT Competition

By Our Reporter

The Sub-Sahara African finals of the Huawei Global ICT Competition, under the theme of “Connection, Glory, Future”, kicked off on 10 September with an online opening ceremony. It is believed to be the biggest event of its kind in Africa covering 14 countries and attracting over 50,000 students.

Globally the Huawei ICT Competition 2019-2020 has covered over 70 countries worldwide, with 150,000 contestants from more than 2,000 universities and colleges.

Launched in the region just five years ago, the Huawei ICT Competition has developed into the largest ICT skills competition in Africa.

During the opening ceremony attended by industry partners, UNESCO and students, Huawei Southern Africa VP, Liao Yong highlighted the significance of connectivity in the era of social distancing.

“The digital divide is actually widening under the new normal caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. As people migrate more work and study online, the digitally disadvantaged people are hit harder,” Liao said.

In a recent UNESCO webinar, digital infrastructure was identified among the most prominent challenges facing higher education in Africa.

“Holding the online version of ICT competition during the pandemic has a unique value, it shows that Huawei, as a pioneer in building African digital infrastructure, also takes its talent strategy very seriously. It encompasses three aspects; digital upskilling ICT professionals, encouraging and enabling ICT students, and promote ICT literacy among ordinary people,” Liao added.

Huawei has invested heavily in preparation for this event, holding 300 campus roadshows, in 14 Sub-Sahara African countries, with a total of 50,000 students participating. The competition-related training helped over 300 students receive job offers.

Also speaking during the opening ceremony, Ydo Yao, acting Director of UNESCO International Bureau of Education, applauded Huawei for playing an exemplary role to support initiatives that create, innovate and deliver ICT skills for the continent.

In Africa, the partnership between UNESCO and Huawei has been fruitful with many successful projects, such as DigiTruck and Huawei ICT Academy under the auspices of Huawei’s digital inclusion initiative TECH4ALL.

With a series of talent ecosystem campaigns in Sub Saharan Africa, including the ICT competition, Huawei hopes to skill up more than 700,000 ICT professionals by 2023. The aim is to bridge the ICT talent gap, advance the digital transformation of industries, and bring digital to every person, home and organization for a fully connected, intelligent world.

By BigEyeUg Team

2015 BET Award winner, Eddy Kenzo was named the new brand ambassador for Uganda Tourism earlier this month.

We also ran you a publication last week that Kenzo had commenced with some of his duties as assigned by the government of Uganda.

This has resurfaced debate on his duties as the Tourism ambassador as it has also been for the recent personalities tasked under the same umbrella.

For so long now, questions have often heat-up regarding this seat with majority of the public yearning to establish particular roles performed by those names chose to represent.

Well, here we have run a brief version of what one ought to anticipate under Kenzo’s term as the Uganda Tourism ambassador.

Who is an ambassador?

An ambassador is an individual who enhances the marketing and sales of a firm/company brand value via the representation of the brand to specific customers in a good reputation.

Key Roles of a Tourism ambassador;

  1. Know the country’s Tourism – To sell something, you have to know it and know it well. The primary role of any ambassador is to market the product or service in the best way they can using their popularity, influence, and expertise.
  2. Make the noise – This is not the kind of noise that drives people insane or creates inconvenience for others, instead its good noise. Creating buzz and painting a good image about the country everywhere is good noise. Our ambassadors have a key role in spreading the good word of Ghana’s beauty, style, culture, and tradition.
  3. Travel wide – Being an ambassador doesn’t really mean selling the country from your home. You need to travel! Go out there, meet people and share the news. It is by making people know how much you love and believe in their own culture and tradition that makes them want to experience yours.
  4. Highlight challenges and advice policymakers – Because the ambassador travels around a lot both domestically and internationally, it is quite easy for them to identify challenges and highlight the problems we face as an industry to the policymakers and authorities.
  5. Bring foreign business – When we sell, we are aiming for people to buy! In the event where people don’t buy, then we may not be doing something right. As ambassadors, after all is said and done, there is only one way to measure efficiency and productivity.

The ‘Semyekozo’ singer together with his camp are committed to landing their obligations and objectives in Uganda’s Tourism industry within the rightfully stipulated time as contracted.
