Network of Jinja live musicians to launch unprecedented monthly showcase

Kelele Unplugged

Beginning 20th May, Kelele Unplugged, a monthly live music showcase presented by #LiveMusicJinja, will become a reality. #LiveMusicJinja is a network aimed to facilitate the development and promotion of live music in Jinja and the surrounding regions. The showcase, as well as the network itself, is the first of its kind in this area.

With a glut of musicians but a scarcity of truly live music and opportunities for these musicians to connect and grow, Kelele Unplugged is filling a significant void. As the man spearheading the movement, currently Jinja-based musician Anthony Jermaine says, “We are a developing community and I am excited to see what we will do together as a community in terms of producing consistent high-quality live music.”

Kelele Unplugged that will happen every third Friday of the month at Flavours Bar and Restaurant (Main Street, Jinja) at 8pm, boasts that it will host “the most authentic live presentations you will find this side of the Nile”. With featured artists, an open mic, a group cipher, all backed by the house band The 1 Love Collective, one would be inclined to believe it. As one involved musician, Sentio Henry, said of Kelele Unplugged in their online forum, “This is a big step towards creating real music.”

Presently, #liveMusicJinja meets as a music community every second Tuesday of the month for collaboration sessions and every fourth Wednesday for master classes on a variety of topics.

Owner of Juliana Kanyomozi’s Pregnancy Revealed: It’s an NRM Cadre

Juliana Kanyomozi

By Our Reporter

It all started when Juliana Kanyomozi’s phones all got switched off. Then came her social media break. Many kept wandering what had happened to this super sex siren.

Weeks back, we reliably learned that Juliana Kanyomozi was pregnant and over 3 months pregnant. But the question remained? Which man had belled the cat? Remember the Tubonga Naawe Project? Well, Juliana Kanyomozi was one of the major stars in the project.

During the artists dinner organized at Munyonyo, Juliana caught the eyes of one of the influential NRM cadres who was in attendance. Immediately, numbers were exchanged. In order to disguise their relationship (since the man is married), the two used to meet in one of the suites at Serena Hotel. Juliana would always book in earlier and the man would pounce in hours later like a thief.

At the moment, Juliana is having a maternal leave in the sky-crapping streets of Nairobi and keeps going for antenatal check-up at Aga Khan hospital.

“She only comes to Kampala once in a while. Then she goes back to Nairobi where the NRM hubby keeps checking on her and footing all the bills,” a friend told this website.

Well, we can now await the birth of the Juliana baby or shall we call the baby, a Tubonga Nawe project.

I went out to a Ugandan Bloggers’ Meet-up. What a Waste of Time It Was!!!

$

I have spent countless days pondering on writing this piece. One voice thought that perhaps things in Uganda need to be given a chance to evolve. That we should not expect heaven while on the earthy grounds of Uganda. Yet, another voice convinced me that we should not expect Uganda to take the same paths of evolution. That Uganda can instead go through revolutions or make quantum leaps. You know the voice that won.

On May 5th Thursday, I chose to make that dreaded trip to the Yasigi Beer Garden for the Uganda Bloggers Happy Hour. It was scheduled to start at 6pm. Did I say 30 minutes later, there was no sign of a blogger’s happy hour? Yes, one to three people were present, but nothing was yet to happen. Nothing makes the better of first impressions like time management skills. Nothing turns me off like the worst of the same.

A couple of weeks back, I had read a Facebook Post by someone I respect. He was angry that many of these meet-ups keep happening but Ugandan bloggers don’t bother to show up whether out of a no-care attitude or a sign of arrogance. With all humility, I had showed up to this meet-up expecting the mother of ideas that matter and conversations worth sharing, worth acting upon.

Bloggers meet

To make matters worse, the sitting arrangement sacked. It should have been sacked in the first place. Then came the music that kept booming from the nearby speakers. One of my friends was then disturbed by the stench of cigarette smoke that permeated the air. It took a lot of hard work to follow the short talk given by the founder of the Konakry Express blog. He gave important insights. Yes, important especially for news. It was like the fundamentals of blogging. Guess it was magic for those aspiring to be bloggers.

Then my friend made a conclusion at the end of the meet-up. “Look here, this has been my first time and it will also serve as my last time at the meet-ups.” How had he read my mind? These were my exact thoughts.

When the space for conversations was opened up, another disappointment cropped up. Nothing is as important as asking the right questions. Everyone can ask a question, everyone can answer a question but the art of asking the right questions, that belongs to the great.

Right then, right there, I knew something was wrong with the bloggers’ meet-up. It’s a great idea built on the wrong foundations, without clear direction. It doesn’t do much to drive conversations in the way they should go. It’s great meeting in an outdoor set-up and interacting over a glass of beer or wine or a cup of coffee, that’s a great one. But then, there should be something one takes home with them. We need to hold conversations that matter in these meet-ups, and there should be proper definitions on what these meet-ups aspire to be or to achieve. We all know what blogging means in the Western sense of the definition. But we need to understand the same in the Ugandan context. We need to know what we all understand by Ugandan blogging, what are the visions for this Ugandan blogging, what are the aspirations, what is the agenda both individual and group?

I made this post weeks later under the assumption that I wouldn’t be led by any emotions whatsoever. I do hope that the organizers of the meet-up will take this in a similar faith and generate a debate on better ways to hold these meet-ups. Finally, I do hope that when debates around the meet-ups themselves are held, Ugandan bloggers will begin to understand that at the end of it all, a blog must influence. And that the bloggers’ community in Uganda should have the ability to make that collective influence on various issues of importance. Perhaps, there could be a theme to pursue in a given month for each blogger.

We can’t keep baby-sitting various happenings in Uganda, we ought to hold them to certain standards. We shouldn’t expect these meet-ups to evolve, we should expect them to make revolutionary quantum leaps. And those leaps won’t happen if we can’t get the basics right. Basics such as asking the right open questions that generate important conversations. Basics such as proper time management just to mention but a few.

Otherwise, for now, call me obnoxious, call me a know-it-all, I am not about to attend any of the bloggers’ meet-ups or happy hours, whatever the case. The current model of the meet-ups is flawed. And working on a flawed model takes us nowhere. One is better off scratching one’s balls and watching from the side-lines as the pseudo-bloggers enjoy their shine.

Gospel musician Judith Babirye turned up late as Members of Parliament began taking oath ahead of taking their seats in the 10th parliament. When quizzed about the reasons for her late coming, the Buikwe woman Member of Parliament elect told us that she had to first coordinate her entire team to come and witness her swearing in.

“I had to look for my people in different areas. My district has three constituencies and I wanted to be with all my people. I am happy that finally I have reached this milestone,” she said.

Asked how she will balance music and Parliament, the Mama Singer said that; “I will continue singing songs that inspire and uplift Ugandans. I will use my time at Parliament to speak out for Ugandans. But when I am in my free time I will be working on this great music. If I fail to get the time I will teach young artistes to sing the music using the gift that God has given me.”

Babirye also promised to tackle the Copyright law issue. “I want to help artistes with copyright law. I will use this opportunity to understand that law and see how we can make sure that our artistes can make some money out of their work. Nigerians have been able to make it worldwide because they have strong laws and the government has supported them. We shall get professionals in copyright and make sure that we enforce the law.”

We will keep you posted.

Farouk Miya, one of the most notable ARS alumni, celebrates after scoring against Togo recently.

By Robert Kayindi James

Uganda National football team head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic is confident that Uganda Cranes attacking midfielder Farouk Miya will sign a permanent deal with Belgian topflight side Standard Liege.

The development follows a recent tweet on Coach Micho’s official twitter handle that stated; “From a reliable source, I can with pride announce that Miya Farook will sign a 3 years contract at standard Liege. Sincere Congratulations.”

Reports from trusted sources suggest that the 19-year-old could sign a mega three year deal with the Belgium giants having successfully passed his trials in a loan deal.

The Ugandan football sensation who was signed on a 6 months loan deal from Ugandan champions Vipers Sports Club during the CHAN tournament in Rwanda in January, 2016 found it hard to adapt to the Belgium environment but made his mark when he was given the opportunity.

Miya made his debut as a 46th minute substitute for Andrade against KV Mechelen where Liege lost 4-0 with Miya also seeing yellow before winning the Belgium cup the following week after a 2-1 win over club Brugge which also booked them an automatic ticket in next season’s UEFA Europa cup. Miya was an unused substitute in this one.

He later got his first game as a starter against Peruwelz mouscron in which he scored the equaliser for liege in the 31st minute standard liege winning 4-1.

If the two clubs (Vipers and Standard Liege) can reach a substantial agreement, Miya will join the latter on a permanent deal.

However, his Ugandan club Vipers are yet to comment anything about the developments.

We will keep you posted.

Tips To Having A Nice Stay At Any Hotel

$

Sheraton Hotel

You will always end up using a hotel on some of your travels or any other lodging arrangements and this means that even if you have paid for your stay, you have to learn some of the proper and necessary etiquette.

Hotels always try their best to give us good service; here are some vital and simple ones to help you do your part as listed by Jovago.

Be Polite To The Staff

Just because you are paying to stay at the hotel does not mean that you have to be rude and bossy to the staff there; they are people too and are trying their best to do their job. Don’t shout at them in situations when you are displeased with their service, be calm and always be polite.

Tip The Staff

It is important to carry loose notes that you can use to tip the valet, housekeeper, waitress, doorman and concierge for their good job done. It's not a written rule that you have to do it, but it is a good thing to do.

Call Ahead

Before arrival, call ahead to confirm the booking and be patient upon reaching the front desk, if they are working on other guests who were checking in before you came. Smile at them while asking them questions even if you are tired from your journey from the airport.

Keep An Eye On Your Children

Children are such adorable little angels, but they can be handful especially when they go to a new place and find it very interesting to explore. You do not want to be the parent with the unruly kids shouting and screaming through the hotel hallway for the other guests. It can be uncomfortable for them so you have to find some activities that can keep the children busy but not too noisy.

Be Clean

Being clean is good for you, keep the trash off the room floor, flush the toilets after using them and do not leave hair in the sink for the housekeeping staff to collect. Put the dirty linen and clothes in one part of the room for them to find and keep things off the bed so that the housekeeper can easily make your bed.

Room Service

When done with room service, put your room service tray out of the room so that the staff can pick it up easily.

Guest Numbers

Why hide the number of people that will be staying in the room you are paying for? Opt for a hotel you can afford so that you do not “miscalculate” the number of people that will be stated when making your payment; it is very unfair to the hotel.

Don’t Hoard The Food

Some hotels provide food in plenty especially the buffet and this can bring out some very unsavory characters in many guests, resist the urge to hoard all the chicken or pastries just because they are in plenty. Leave some for the rest of the guests.

Toiletries

While it is ok to carry certain things from the hotel such as soap and shampoo, do not take the towels, linen or bathrobes. The latter are reusable so that means the hotel can wash them and provide them to other guests who will use the hotel soon after you leave.

Ecofriendly

When not in the room, make sure to switch off the lights and air conditioning. Do not leave the TV on either to save energy. If you do not want the housekeepers to wash your towels and robes, you can reuse them too.

Now go on and be a good hotel guest.
