MTN customers contribute Ugx 21.9million to Red Cross to fight COVID-19

Ugandans responded to a call by the Uganda Red Cross society and have contributed shs21.9million towards the society’s efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The contributions were made through a MoMoPay merchant code that MTN Uganda launched in April as one of the telecom company’s interventions in the fight against the deadly virus. Through the merchant code *165*3*191919# MTN customers are in position to make donations of any amount toward the efforts to combat COVID-19.

Robert Kwesiga, the General Secretary Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) said at the launch of the Merchant code that the donations would be used to procure and provide essential food assistance to the most vulnerable households whose livelihoods, from their informal jobs, have been adversely affected by the partial lockdown instituted in response to COVID19 pandemic in Uganda. This is to complement government efforts.

Speaking after receiving the money from MTN Uganda on behalf of Red Cross, Dr. Josephine Okwera, the Director Health and Social Services at URCS was elated that Ugandans had responded positively to the call, but said the struggle is still on and needs more generous Ugandans to come on board.

“We would really like to thank the community for responding to our call. This money will go a long way in making the lives of some people easier during this hard time. But as you are all aware, the lockdown has been extended so we call upon more Ugandans to come on board so we can rescue those that are worst hit due to the lockdown,” Okwera said.

MTN Uganda’s Senior Manager corporate affairs and Public Relations, Ms. Rhona Arinaitwe reiterated the company’s commitment to stand together with Ugandans by doing everything it can to reduce the impact that covid19 is having on their lives. She committed that, “MTN Uganda will continue to look at ways of supporting our communities and government, to ensure that together, we do everything feasible to get through this difficult time.”

Arinaitwe further noted that the merchant code *165*3*191919# will remain open to the public who wish to donate towards the fight against the COVID19 pandemic. The money collected from the merchant code henceforth will be channeled to the National COVID19 Task Force to support their efforts in alleviating the devastating effects of the pandemic.

MTN Uganda, like other organisations responded to governments call to support her efforts in the COVID19 fight. MTN zero rated mobile money sending transactions of any amount, contributed shs290million to Uganda Red Cross society to support the society’s efforts, and contributed another shs220million to National Water to deliver water to water stressed communities in and around Kampala.

The telecom company also handed over three brand new pickup trucks to the COVID 19 task force as a response to the President’s call for cars.

MTN Uganda together with Salaam TV delivered some of the donations to Oasis Orphanage in Lweza, along Entebbe Road.

By Our Reporter

MTN Uganda together with Salaam TV delivered some of the donations to Oasis Orphanage in Lweza, along Entebbe Road. The home takes care of children that have been orphaned, abandoned in hospitals, police stations, thrown away by their parents or guardians among others. The home has been running for 10 years now and has taken care of over 500 children.

The orphanage is one of the beneficiaries of the Ramadhan food and alms donation worth 100million shillings that will be distributed to the Muslim community by MTN Uganda in partnership with Salaam TV during this fasting period.

This support underscores the long standing relationship that the telecom giant has had with the Muslim community spanning several years. This year however is a different year as the fasting season has fallen at a time when the whole world is grappling with the COVID 19 pandemic which has paralysed livelihoods of many. It gets even harder for the orphanages that depend on donations since the COVID19 pandemic has devastated many of their would-be donors.

The food items that were donated include sugar, rice, maize flour, cooking oil, beans, wheat flour and bar soap for hand washing.

The proprietors of the orphanage thanked MTN Uganda and Salaam TV for their generosity noting the orphanage operates because of generous and kind organizations like these.

While handing over the donation, Ian Mugambe the High Value Marketing Manager at MTN Uganda expressed the company’s delight upon reaching out to the children in the home.

“We are delighted to donate to a home that has taken care of abandoned children who would otherwise have nowhere to stay. We dearly appreciate your efforts and hope that our package will go a long way to help during this time”, Mugambe said.

On behalf of the area Resident District Commissioner, Sejjengo Sulaiman, the Mayor Ndejje Division, received the donation as per the guidelines of the Government of Uganda on behalf of the Orphanage.

He thanked MTN Uganda and Salaam Foundation and in turn handed over the donation as received to the orphanage.

Similar food items will be distributed to the Rafic Children’s home in Nansana and other vulnerable Muslim communities especially in the areas of Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono district with the guidance of the National task force against COVID19.

Best Ugandan TV Presenters of All Time

$

0

We set out to settle the big debate, of all Ugandan TV Presenters, who holds the mantle of the greatest, the best, the most formidable? Could it be Sheilah Gashumba or Zahara Toto. We focused on the social side of the Presenters. Pretty much, all the other categories of presenters do not feature here. But if you did entertainment, social life, fashion, name it all, we’ve come up with the ultimate list.

  1. Colin Serubiri (Jam Agenda)

If there’s a god of TV presenting, then it must be Colin Serubiri. Everything we know about presenting today, Serubiri did write the textbook. At his peak, he was having stints as a guest presenter on BET and Channel O. He built the template for TV presenters, from how to speak, how to stand, how to dress up. Serubiri was the man. He went from being a host at Sabrina’s pub Karaoke nights to transforming the craft. He brought the Jam Agenda idea and flew with it. As they say, the rest is history.

2. Straka ‘Baibe’ Mwezi (Late Show)

If there’s one person who built a loyal following, almost to cult-like status, it’s Straka. Late Show was the today’s equivalent of the Saturday Night Live. Although her life was full of drama, she did set hair trends every week at the Late Night Show. Most shows rock on Friday nights, but Straka transformed Thursday night with her show.

Here’s the rest of the list:

3. JK Kazoora

4. MC Kats

5. Douglas Lwanga

6. Barbara Yata

7. Calvin D’ Entertainer

8. Dennis Mawanda

9. Robin Kisti

10. Charles Oyimuke

Saarbrucken based Ugandan singer, model and actress Yvonne Starr has added salt to an injury reviving the Sheila Gashumba undr payment debate that was a hot topic earlier this week. Yvonne who before singing was a model based in Tanzania also shared her experience where she disclosed how she once rejected a 15M Centenary bank deal to appear on billboads as a model because she was paid way more in Tanzania and Europe.

Sheila Gashumba earlier revealed how she used to earn just Shs50k per show while still presenting on The Style Project show on NTV Uganda. Yvonne Starr’s concern however is that not only do other countries pay better but also men are paid way more in Uganda to execute similar tasks. Yvonne Starr therefore believes that Gashumba’s point is a broad one that needs a serious debate.

“I think Sheilah Gashumba raised a topic that is affecting almost every Ugandan not only TV presenters, however it’s a broad topic that needs a serious debate. Another thing also to consider is equal pay for equal work.”

Yvonne is currently living in Saarbrucken, Germany and over a month ago, she prophesied that COVID-19 will be no more by 29th May 2020. We still await to see if her prophesy will turn out true.

MTN Uganda Supports Kasese Floods Victims With Non-Food Start-up kits

  • Thousands of people are displaced, houses and property destroyed, and livelihoods affected following flash floods from heavy rains in Kasese district and surrounding Mt. Rwenzori region this month.
  • MTN has donated shs.41,000,000 to provide relief to the displaced people
  • The money will be used to provide 100 start-up nonfood items/ relief kits to support some of the displaced families.

MTN Uganda through its Corporate Social Responsibility arm, the MTN Foundation has donated Shs. Ugx 41,000,000 million towards the Kasese floods victims. This money will be used to buy non-food relief items to support the families that have been displaced.

The devastating floods ensued after River Nyamwamba burst its banks, following the heavy rains that hit the Rwenzori Mountain ranges.

Over 24,760 households with approximately 173,320 people were affected by the flash floods. Almost up to 150 houses were destroyed in Karusandara division while another 92 houses were completely washed away in Nyamwamba and kilembe areas. The displaced people have sought shelter from nearby churches and school buildings following a directive from Hon. Musa Ecweru, the state Minister for Relief and Disaster Preparedness during his visit to the area last week.

It is against this premise MTN Uganda, through it’s foundation that aims at improving the lives of the communities within which it operates by supplementing government efforts in priority areas including disaster responses has urgently come in to reach out to the  Kasese floods victims with relief aid.

While handling over the dummy cheque to the Red Cross and Officials from the office of the Prime Minister, MTN Uganda’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Wim Vanhelleputte said remarked that facing such a disaster in these unprecedented times when the globe is grappling with the Covid19 pandemic and the country in a state of lock-down, spells double tragedy for the people of Kasese, thus prompting urgent relief from mtn and all other stake holders to save the lives of people.

This was during a dummy cheque handover at the Nyonyi Gardens MTN offices in Kampala this morning.

Wim further expressed MTN’s heartfelt sympathy to the people of Kasese.

“As MTN Uganda, we stand with the people of Kasese who have suffered great loss in the recent heavily destructive flash floods. We understand that this is such a trying time, especially since we are already battling the devastating effects of the Covid19 pandemic. We hope that this modest support we have rendered will offer them some comfort,”

While receiving the cheque, Robert Kwesiga, Uganda Red Cross Secretary General appreciated MTN for always coming through very fast to support whenever the Country has emergences.

“This is not the first time MTN Uganda has supported people affected by disasters. Last year they supported Bududa twice, supported Bundibugyo and today they are supporting Kasese. This consistent commitment is a true humanitarian spirit exhibited by MTN to support it’s community. Amidst this period when all partners including MTN have heavily invested in the COVID-19 fight, MTN has still managed to support Kasese. We want to thank you.” Kwesiga said.

The money shall be used to procure 100 standard household non-food-item kits to reach out to 100 most vulnerable families comprising of children, youths, women and the elderly. Each of the kits contains 2 cooking pots, 6 cups, 6 plates, 1 knife, 1 ladle, 2 jerry cans, 3 blankets, 3 mosquito nets, 3 bars of soap and 1 tarpaulin for shelter.

In 2013, the MTN foundation spent about 250m to support the kilembe mines hospital which had been affected by similar floods through refurbishment of the children and maternal ward and provided items to support the hospital inclusive of 100 hospital beds, mattresses, mosquito nets as well a generator.

On behalf of the Government of Uganda, the Ag Commissioner for Disaster Preparedness Ms. Rose Nakabugo extended warm heartfelt appreciation to MTN Foundation for the support to the people of Kasese. “This is very timely. We thank MTN and commit that the donated items will right away be delivered to Kasese to help people cope through this situation. Thank you for complementing our efforts.”

What this means to a layman is that, Kikuubo Online is 2 in1 Online platform (Wholesaler and retailer). As a retailer, you can now buy one item of any product and fill up your shopping cart as when you go to any supermarket and pick any item of your choice, add it to your cart and delivery will be done within 24 hours. Orders below 200,000 will have to pay a nominal delivery fee that is calculated basing on distance from their warehouse to your location

“Our target market is individuals and households who find it difficult to pass by the supermarket every other day. Kikuubo Online is making it convenient for consumers who regularly visit the supermarket to have their daily supermarket shopping cart delivered to them at their doorstep” explains Paul Muyobo, the Marketing Manager for Kikuubo Online. This should come as good news especially in the current lock down due to COVID 19 where movement is limited, and social distancing is encouraged.

“While we still serve our existing customers who have supported us since one year of operation as an online wholesaler, Kikuubo Online is now launching the retail platform to be able to reach out to the end customer. Our prices are transparent and affordable coupled with doorstep delivery”, Paul further explains.

With a steady increase in Internet connectivity, Internet world stats puts Uganda at 31% penetration rate, more and more Ugandans are embracing e-commerce. I have since written several other songs like ‘Kisasi kimu’, ‘Binkolera’, ‘Omwoyo’, and ‘Beera Nange’ by Sheebah Karungi; ‘Sabula’, ‘Nakupenda’, and ‘Katijjo’ by Fille; ‘Olindaki’ by Lydia Jazmine, just to mention but afew.

2. How did you meet and what made you decide to team up?

Hatim: We met for the first time in studio in late 2019. It is after this that we discovered that we could do good music together. The chemistry, how our vocals blend, and the positive feedback from other people made us confident and we talked about becoming a duo and the rest is history.

Dokey: I met Hatim in 2019 at Nuff Empire studio where I had gone to record a song with Skills On the Beat. We had a long chat about the industry and music at large, listened to each other’s music, and thereafter decided to record a song together. We realized there was a good vibe between us, and decided to record even more music together in that same week.

After taking time to look through what we had done together, it was addictive and irresistible to our consciences, we felt we belong together musically. It is after this that we thought of becoming partners.

We formed HD Music, H from Hatim and D from Dokta Brain, but felt the name didn’t sound catchy enough. We later settled for Hatim & Dokey.

3. Describe your kind of music and the creative process that goes into making it?

Hatim: Our music falls in quite a number of genres and is mostly influenced by the surrounding environment at the time. Writing lyrics and creating melodies is a natural skill and ours has evolved over time with training and experience.

Dokey: We are versatile artistes, both lyrically and melodically. We are not confined to one music style. We may do a lot of Afrobeat music but we are very flexible, allowing us to realize our full musical potential.

4. Are you working on any music projects at the moment? If yes, when should we expect them to drop?

Yes, we are working on our debut album titled Vibes and Themes (VAT) which will have 20 tracks. So far we have released 2 songs and hope to be releasing more music soon.

5. What challenges have you so far faced in the music industry and how have you dealt with them?

Hatim: The lack of funds to attend studio sessions, record and produce music, shoot music videos and promote the music is one of the biggest challenges we have had to go through, not to mention unsupportive people along the way.

Dokey: Just like any other business, the music industry is challenging, especially financially. But thank God for our management, we’ve overcome that struggle. Now, the remaining struggle is just a question of time, and all will be alright.

6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hatim: We pray for life, otherwise we are working to get to the top. We see ourselves holding successful album releases, music concerts, and global tours.

Dokey: We are just going to do what we have to and continue to grow. Through hard work and persistence that we intend to put into our careers for the next five years, we should be able to put our name on the global map.

Students do not need MBS to be able to access the sites as they are free of charge

The gesture is part of the initiatives that MTN Uganda has put in place during the lockdown to make the lives of her communities a bit easier.

MTN Uganda has zero rated a number of Universities online learning platforms allowing students and lecturers free access to study at home during this period of the COVID 19 lockdown.

This means that no data charges will apply to these educational websites as students and lecturers will be able to utilise them to continue with learning and teaching from home.

Like all other education institutions, the universities officially closed on March 20 after a directive from President Yoweri Museveni that all places of mass concentration suspend their operations to prevent the spread of Covid19.

Below is a list of the learning platforms that have been zero rated.

Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has lauded telecommunications giant for this gesture saying it will go a long way in enabling students catch up on lost study time as they will now have access to the study materials at no cost.

“Our negotiations with MTN Uganda yielded a lot of fruit as the telecom company has accepted to zero rate six of our online learning platforms. We applaud them for this. I now urge our students and lectures to take advantage of this opportunity,” he said.

At the onset of the lockdown, MTN Uganda also zero rated a number of e-learning platforms targeting the primary and secondary students, a move which several parents lauded as it enabled them to continue their children’s learning at home.
