UBL has given cash rewards to 10 youth from Northern Uganda for their startup businesses.

By Our Reporter

Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has given cash rewards to 10 youth from Northern Uganda for their startup businesses. These youths received a reward of Ugx 15 million for excelling in the UBL skills for life program.

UBL, under the skills for life scheme, in October 2018 offered 30 scholarships worth shs 116 million to young, academically talented but financially challenged students from the farming communities in Northern Uganda. Under project, UBL provided funds to cover tuition, entrepreneurship training and mentorship that enabled the students to start businesses in their communities.

“At Uganda Breweries, one of our key priority areas is skilling youth in order to secure a sustainable future. Under our Skills for Life Initiative, we continue to offer special opportunities to the nation’s brightest scholars who are less fortunate. We not only offer them scholarships but also provide career guidance and mentorship on business start-ups and expansion skills which the youth can later use to increase job opportunities in their communities, improve their incomes and eradicate poverty in the long run.” Charity Ekudu Kiyemba, the Uganda Breweries Legal and Corporate Relations Director said.

“From the total beneficiaries that we sponsored and skilled in 2018, we are happy to share that all have finished school and gone ahead to start businesses of their own. However the 10 youths that we are rewarding today put up exceptional and valuable businesses which we are proud to recognize.” She added.

UBL has given cash rewards to 10 youth from Northern Uganda for their startup businesses.

The scholarship project is managed and run on behalf of UBL by technical expert, Enterprise Uganda, who have vast experience in SME development, training and mentorship in entrepreneurship. Enterprise Uganda was in charge of skilling, mentoring and training the students as well as selecting the top performing businesses to receive the seed capital.

Explaining the criteria they used to pick the students to receive the reward money, Rosemary Mutyabule from Enterprise Uganda said, “We selected the best young entrepreneurs based on their capacity to execute and implement business projects. We also assessed the sales that were made since they started the business, the profits made, the number of employment opportunities that have been created by the business and the general contribution of the business to the neighboring community.”

“For example 21 years old Betty Apoo from Kitgum technical Institute in December 2018 set up a tailoring business and a Simsim business in Rackoko, Pader district. Her initial capital was shs 98,000/= borrowed from her aunt. She made sales of Shs 1,000,000/= and a profit of shs 510,000/=. Betty is now supporting her family and paying school fees for her two children.”

“Similarly, Auma Sunday Okee (22 years) set up a maize grain farm in Mucwini, Kitgum district using capital of shs 98,000/=. She earned sales of shs 1,611,000/= and a profit of shs 1,446,000/=. Ojok Christopher from St Daniel Comboni started a piggery and brick making business in February 2019 with capital of shs 150,000. He has so far made sales of shs 560,000 and currently employs 6 people in his brick laying business.”

The youth that have received the seed capital are Nelson Mandela, Christopher Ojok, Innocent Wokorach, Geoffrey Opoka, Bongomin Calvin from St Daniel Comboni in Gulu, Auma Sunday Okee, Ocen David, Apoo Betty Canwak, Okema John Kelly and Ayaa Rosemary from Kitgum Technical Institute.

Since inception in 2001, the Uganda Breweries Skills for Life Initiative has awarded over 200 university scholarships to bright and needy students across East Africa, with 40 of them from Uganda.

In 2017, UBL re-focused their scholarships to focus on Technical and vocational courses in response to the cry for more practical entrepreneurial skills for the youth to reduce unemployment levels around the country. UBL has so far awarded scholarships worth UGX 230m to 70 students in vocational schools in Northern, Western and Central Uganda. Every year the company will be giving out scholarships to students from the different regions around the country.

Students of St. Daniel Comboni Polytechnic in the North Eastern district of Moroto are set to benefit from a fully furnished ICT lab courtesy of the MTN Foundation in partnership with the Belgian development agency, Enabel.

The MTN Uganda Foundation which is the corporate social responsibility arm of MTN Uganda, in partnership with Enabel, a bilateral agency that implements and coordinates the international development policy of Belgium have extended support to vocational institutes through the provision of computers and fast internet connection. This is expected to partly contribute to the fulfillment of the aspirations of the 10-year BTVET strategic plan called “Skilling Uganda” and ultimately result in the equipping of youth with the skills needed for employment and job creation in order to eradicate poverty.

The laboratory whose equipment cost 64 million shillings will also support and provide educational services to students from neighboring communities. MTN Uganda renovated and repainted the laboratory, donated 10 computers connected to high speed internet connectivity and a digital learning platform.

Other beneficiaries include; St Simon Peter’s Vocational Training Center in Hoima and Amelo Technical Institute in Adjumani district which were refurbished and commissioned last year. The entire project for the three ICT labs cost 192 million shillings.

Speaking at the commissioning of the laboratory at St. Daniel Comboni Polytechnic in Moroto, Mr. Wim Vanhelleputte, the Chief Executive Officer MTN Uganda said that: “The aim is to skill Ugandan youth for the 21st century job market by enabling them to access technical and vocational information online through open education resources for skills development.”

Vanhelleputte further noted that the decision to support vocational institutions was based on the fact that vocational training was found to be an effective way of addressing unemployment, which is a major issue for the youth in Uganda today.

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Uganda H.E Rudi Veestraeten noted that his country and Ireland have close to 5 years heavily invested in skills development through supporting the implementation of the skilling Uganda strategic plan. The laboratory, he said, will address some of the challenges that vocational institutes currently face.

“Although ICT has been formally integrated into the Business, Technical, Vocational Education and Training curriculum, Vocational Institutes lack general computer equipment, trained ICT staff and ICT content and programmes,” he said.

The Director for Higher Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports, Mr. Oceng Odok Robert lauded MTN Uganda and Enabel for supporting government initiatives through supporting the education sector.

“As we are all aware, today, the role of ICTs in education cannot be under estimated. ICTs play a critical role of shaping the desirable 21st century work and life skills,” he said.

Fr. Jude Kiggala, the Principal of the Institute said the laboratory will enable them to embrace modern technology to keep up with the ever-evolving trend so as to provide a workforce befitting the 21 st century.

“Instructors will use the lab to source information to better the quality of their trainings, understand the latest trends in their respective fields then align their trainings accordingly.” Fr. Kiggala said.

Big Talent boss Eddy Kenzo recently called for a press briefing and surprised the media that expected he was announcing his usual annual concert but instead announced he would be holding a festival. It is the first of it’s kind from a Ugandan artiste.

A festival is an all day event that cuts across various activities from kid’s park, different stages and caters for all age groups.

Eddy Kenzo will hold his festival on the 28th of March at Kololo airstrip and he will use the same day to give back to his fans. While he will as expected perform, he will also have goodies to give to the fans like motocycles, helicopter rides among other offers.

Eddy Kenzo being the most travelled artiste in Uganda could have imported an idea that will so much be the new trend for big artistes in the country. For the past 20 years, artistes have been holding night concerts and obviously that leaves out a certain section of their fans, the festival is a much better option for fans to celebrate their stars.

Eddy Kenzo has invited all fellow artistes to grace the event.

Duke Gareth Onyango will wed Buganda Kingdom’s Princess Victoria Nkinzi in November 2020.

According to our snoops, Buganda is geared up for the next big royal wedding as they welcome a munamawanga into the Kingdom.

According to our sources, before the engagement, Gareth Onyango met the Kabaka at his Banda palace where he was asked to confirm whether he was indeed in love with the Princess. A shivering Gareth looked the King in the eyes and confirmed that he had thought through his decision and was sure about this journey. The Kabaka then gave his full endorsement to the wedding.

A committee of over 200 Buganda royalists has been assembled to coordinate this wedding. As per tradition, the Kwanjula will not go down he normal way as all others happen.

Instead it will be organised as an initiation ceremony of sorts as a mukoopi gets elevated to a Duke status. This initiation will happen in October.

In November, the wedding will takeplace at Namirembe Cathedral and the Kabaka will be in attendance to send off his daughter.

We’ve also been told King Mswati has been invited as one of the guests. The Kingdom is currently courting Prince Harry and Meghan to be the guests of honour given their new life setting.

The wedding is estimated to cost UGX 2.8 billion according to the budget shared with our team.

Why Are There No More Sexy Celebs in Uganda?

People of Fury and Wilder, you will excuse me but I have a very important question.

Who are the sexiest Ugandan celebrities today?
Why on Earth don’t I have a single celebrity I am crushing on? Doesn’t that speak to the death of this industry?

Imagine in those days the things Barbara Yata did to me. Just her name alone would cause you to start dreaming about the endless possibilities of life.

Then we had Karitas. Oba who uses to give these people names? There was a full thought process that went into these days, forget these things of Zahara Toto.

Now I hear even Lilian Barenzi abandoned us and opted for the US Navy.

Those days just hearing the name Seanice Kacungira would get you singing; “Tweyagale.” How do we explain to the next generation that Full Figure was on the top list?

What did we do as an industry?

Whatever it’s faults, WBS TV is the best thing that ever happened to this industry. It built it from scratch….

Someone bring back the good old days where Omwana would ask for meleva, you give her milk nabuuka…

Saturday night at Club Tavern was a refreshing dose of fun, excitement and energy for Masaka’s party animals as the Johnnie Walker Highball Tour came to their town.

The party started with Selector Jay alongside Miss Deedan on stage, setting the tone for the evening with an energetic display as they hyped up the crowd.

Not long after, the star of the night, Jose Chameleone took to the stage sending the crowd wild with excitement. He brought the house down with songs like “Mateka”, “Mama Mia,” “Hana” before winding down his enthralling performance with his hit song “Wale Wale” that had revelers up on their feet wishing the night would not end.

There was also a performance from Chosen Becky who entertained the crowd with her songs like “Byabangi”, “Kyosaba,” “Bankuza”—a particular favourite with the crowd.

The night was capped with Masaka’s very own Basakala Boys who had the crowds going wild with laughter at their comical acts not forgetting DJ Batta, DJ Katts and MC Might Dragon who took it a notch higher with music mixing that kept the revellers dancing until the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Here are some photos from the event.

How was the electric guitar invented

$

By Staff Writer

Invention of an instrument or a theory or any other aspect of matter or the matter itself has always been a contradictory discussion to follow. And design of electric guitar is no exception to that belief.

Since the beginning of human life, history says that music was the constant companion of them. Humans can’t live alone so they started to live in groups and for communication, fun and entertainment they used to sing and dance from old age.

A Brief History of Music

Music maybe invented before their language. And music can’t produce without musical equipment as days passing the material getting smarter and more improvised.

Recent time Guitar is one of the exciting musical equipment to people. In recent times there are many types of guitar such as acoustic and electrical guitar. Electric guitar is a revolution inthe music world.  But there is a long history of how was the electric guitar invented.

Between 1920-1930

During the 1920 and early 1930’s, there has been a lot of experiments made to guitar to introduce an identically different sound-making instrument which is an amplification of already made acoustic guitar sound to expand the music theories.

For instance, Carbon button microphones were attached in the bridge as a receiver of the signal and to be amplified through the message it received was weak. This happened in 1920.

Era of Orchestra

And this kind of signal receiver has continued until a proper one has been invented. Therefore a numerous people has been remained as the claimants to be the first one to invent the electric guitar.

During the era of orchestras, most of the guitar players felt the necessity of the amplification of their sound of the guitar to keep themselves identical in terms of playing.

Myko Ouma
Myko Ouma plays his guitar

First Acoustic Electric Guitar

The archtop acoustic guitar is the firstjazz electric guitar. It was a hollow body acoustic guitar with electromagnetic transducers. However,  Rickenbacker, Vega, Epiphone and Gibson are also considered to be few electronic guitar manufacturer from the early 1930’s.

A considerable number of people believe, Les Paul was the inventor of the electric guitar. However, respecting Les Paul for transformations of signature electric guitar, he is not rightfully considered to be the inventor of the electric guitar.

Commercial Electrical Guitar

George Beach amp and Adolph Rickenbacker was two of the musicians who invented and develped electric guitar commercially.

Among them, Adolph was an electrical engineer, and they designed an amplifiable electric guitar. They were the first to achieve the quality sound with professional music settings.

Modern And Classical One

Classical guitar was already enough to contribute to the music back in the days. However, as time was passing by, the guitar was becoming the 2nd tier instrument to the music as drums and brass were progressing to contribute to music ata higher rate. Therefore the necessity of electric guitar began to rise.

Charlie Christian, who was a phenomenal American jazz guitarist, was seen first among other jazz guitarist to perform his solos with ES-150 which is Gibson’s first introduced commercial Electric Guitar.

Conclusion

The electric guitar was invented about a hundred years ago but it’s still improving by the artists and manufacturers of it. People often forget about the creator of a great invention but Charlie Christian will be always remembered as the real first electrical guitarist.

One of the biggest hindrances to development in Africa is government suspicious position towards the private sector.- President Museveni

This admonition by the President was clearly not heeded as countless government agencies used every apparatus available from media to police, State prosecution and more to malign the vision of Charles Lambert’s Development Channel.

In a case which was subsequently charged at the magistrate court, Nakawa, the court dismissed the accusations as the government prosecutors lacked any single presentation of proof of any wrong doing.

Speaking shortly after the verdict, Lambert had this to say ” They have only done the right thing by dismissing this ridiculous case. One year was wasted coming to this court for nothing. We are now focused on getting back to our mission and rekindling the fire within those who this malicious attack and blackmail grossly affected. We have also not ruled out the possibility of law suits against these agencies. There must be consequences of using your privileged position as a government official to destroy the work and investments of others”.

Each day unvails a new leadership captain hopeful and the latest is Alexander Akandwanaho Saleh, son to top and feared army officer Salim Saleh who made his intentions clear yesterday. Alexander aims to take over as western Uganda NRM vice chairperson a seat long eyed by a one Kisembo Diini who made his intentions earlier and has been doing ground work in the region. Alexander’s intention are a big shock to Kisembo who was in an almost one man race.

While the latter’s manifesto has not been laid out yet, Kisembo has a 10 point program that has emphasised the youth Secretariat section where he aims at empowering the youth in the region and eventually all over the country.

Kisembo has stuck to his youth Secretariat thinking that will decentralise the youth structures and bring them regional. “We want to bring services closer to the youth by bringing them regional starting with western where I will base and it can spread, North, Eastern, Central and Karamoja regions” he told the website. The youth believe in youth delivering because their problems relate more unlike before when we had older people representing us, he added.

“We want the young people to denounce pressure groups” he stresses. While we wait for Alexander to lay out his plan, atleast we have Kisembo slightly more elaborate.
