The Coca-Cola System in Uganda (The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation and Century Bottling Company), together with Mercy Corps have celebrated the benefits of the YES! “Youth Empowered for Success” Initiative. Launched in 2015, the three year program has provided training and links to both employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for over 2000 youth in Kawempe Division, Kampala and parts of Wakiso District.

The project used community-run “YES HUBS” which offered training focused on job readiness, life and technical skills and financial literacy and provided youth with the opportunity to join peer networking and savings groups. Together with other private sector partners, YES! created opportunities for youth to realize new and more secure livelihood opportunities.

Speaking on behalf of The Coca-Cola system in Uganda, Maureen Kyomuhendo, the Public Affairs & Communications Manager Coca-Cola Beverages Africa Uganda noted that “Youth employment is the bedrock of long-term economic health, social cohesiveness and sustainability around the world. While 10-12 million young Africans enter the workforce each year, less than half this number of employment opportunities are available. Against this backdrop, The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation (TCCAF) partnered with Mercy Corps and other partners in different Countries to launch the Youth Empowered for Success (YES!) Program; a bold initiative that has enabled youth across Africa to access new economic opportunities including jobs, skills training, mentorship and financial services. In Uganda, we are excited to be celebrating over 2000 youth in the 1 st three years of the project.”

In his message, Conrad van Niekerk, the Managing Director Coca-Cola Beverages Africa Uganda commented: “I would like to applaud our partners – Mercy Corps and the youth here in Kawempe & Wakiso that participated in the program for demonstrating to the World that youth empowerment can be achieved. Seeing what the youth have showcased today – a lot of effort was put in through their hubs. The end game, which is about driving economies and promoting a positive narrative around youth as entrepreneurs, innovators, economic leaders, and employers has been achieved! The challenge is to ensure that the empowerment will have a lasting ripple effect across their families, communities, businesses, countries, and globally – which is what Coca-Cola seeks to do.”

On their part, Mercy Corps thanked The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation and Century Bottling Company for the partnership. Mr. Sean Granville- Ross, the Mercy Corps Regional Director was overwhelmed about the accomplishment of the youth beneficiaries. He applauded the commitment of all the partners and invited everyone to learn, mingle, network, engage and be inspired by all that can be accomplished when youth, the private sector and communities come together to create a brighter future.

Different youth groups, in their “hubs” showcased their businesses and skills that they attained through the YES! Program.

Huawei exposes Ugandan students to high-end tech

Ugandan ICT students currently undergoing training at Huawei’s Technologies Co. Ltd Headquarters in Shenzhen China, have appreciated the one-week hands on training that has exposed them to the latest technology trends and what the future of the ICT Industry will be. The students who include eight in their final year, one in second year and one in her first year were the successful ones picked from four public Universities in Uganda to benefit from the Huawei Seeds for the Future Programme 2018. This is after their proposals about using ICT to improve certain issues in the health, education, agriculture and transport sectors were the best among the 35 presented by University students.

During their time at the Huawei headquarters, which is built on an area covering 2.2 km², the Ugandan students were exposed to the different networks like the 3G, 4G and also made to understand more about the cutting-edge technologies trends such as 5G, Internet of Things (IOT) and Cloud computing. They had a hands-on practice in Huawei Technologies’ most advanced labs and were also taken on a guided tour of Huawei’s Exhibition hall of digital
technology.

The students described their training at Huawei as a great eye opener into the emerging and dominating technologies in the world today. They were particularly ardent about the cloud computing which enables data to be stored in the clouds so that one can easily access it from any place on a monitor without a computer.

Kasumba Robert a final year student of Software Engineering from Makerere University said he liked the future potential of Huawei 5G network which will open doors to an all connected world. “With an all connected world, my proposal on helping farmers get information about the common crop and animal diseases as well as pests will easily come to life and many homes shall be able to share the much-needed information easily and cheaply or at no cost at all”, Kasumba said.

Oola Gerald a finalist of Information Technology at Muni University said the training has shown him that implementing the technologies and embracing them is not as hard as he earlier thought. “I have learnt that in order to leverage on the emerging 4.5G and 5G technologies which will dominate the world in the not so far future, I should incorporate remote sensors such as thermometers and blood pressure sensors in my health care proposal in order to have the data processed quickly.”

The students were also passionate about the Internet of Things (IoT) which is the connection between objects, humans and other things using sensors. Karasira Cosmas a year four Computer Engineering student at Busitema University said the Seeds for the Future training has opened up his world to the evolving technology. ”IoT technology can surely be used in the project of installing closed-circuit television camera in our city and towns to curb the rampant crime, safe driving, improved health care and smart homes to mention but a few”, he said.

Mangeni Ajambo Cleopatra a Makerere University finalist of Computer Science said she enjoyed the networking lessons and was looking at the challenge ahead to improve her skills. She also noted that with a 5G network capable of transmitting data at up to 20 gigabits per second (Gbps), IoT and Cloud computing, the health of a patient with chronic disease can be closely monitored in real time because there will be immediate communication between the wearable gadgets and smartphone.

“With this training I can now say that I am ready to make my contribution to the digital community. I am going to teach my colleagues about the 5G technology and how to build a 4G base station” said Kirembwe Andrew an Information Technology student finalist from Muni University.

As for Annet Mary Nakate a third year Information Systems student from Muni University, she has learnt the basics of networking especially when it comes to modern technology and was also exposed to smart farming.

Mugisha Samuel a second-year student from Muni University said what he found most interesting was the Phone tracking and Quick Response (QR) technology that can help improve the standards in Uganda. He added that the infrared technology he was exposed to can contribute much to his automated solar powered incubator proposal.

Obbo Peter said when he returns to Uganda he will enlighten his friends about the 5G network and encourage them to embrace it since only a few know about the 4G and cannot even tell the difference.

Nanyonga Berinda a Software Engineering finalist from Makerere University described the training as very educational and a mind questioning experience. “Every second I spent in this training is so memorable to me and I would wish to pass on the skills I have learnt from the Chinese people to my colleagues,” she said.

The youngest on the team Abigaba Hilda a First-Year student from Lira University said the training hadn’t been so compatible with what she was learning, but she was however happy to get exposed to the future potential of the 5G network.

According to Huawei’s Global Head of Corporate Social Responsibility Holy Ranaivozanany, the Seeds for the Future programme was initiated by Huawei Technologies to nurture the talent for tomorrow that will contribute to building the Information and Communication Technology Industry. “We create a pool of talent that will probably be working for Huawei in the future, or with our competitors and customers but really contributing to the industry. It is important that we give the students a hands-on experience and chance to try and build the networks themselves”, she said.

She added that 108 countries are so far benefitting from the seeds for the Future programme and a total of 3,660 people have benefitted from the 2 weeks study tour to China since it was initiated in 2008. She also pointed out that many of those who come to Huawei headquarters for the training are inspired by Huawei’s story to believe in what they would like to do in the future and how technology can make a difference in their respective countries. “We hope that in the future these students can apply these technologies in their countries”, she said.

Huawei’s Global Head of Corporate Social Responsibility said the programme will continue for the next coming years and she hoped it will continue giving the young talents an open mind and enable them to make a difference by being innovative and bringing in new technologies so as to effectively contribute to the development of the ICT Industry.

The Huawei Seeds for the future programme has been running in Uganda since 2016 and a total of 30 students have benefitted. In China the Ugandan group was twinned with ten students from Myanmar.

The official grand breaking of the Manufacturing bottle Line.

The official grand breaking of the Manufacturing bottle Line.

Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (Uganda) officially broke ground for a brand new US$8.35million (UGX 30.7billion) Manufacturing Line to bottle more on Friday.

The new bottling line at the Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (Uganda) Namanve site operated by Century Bottling Company will have a capacity of producing 24,000 bottles an hour, accelerating the production of natural mineral water to refresh and rehydrate Ugandans.

The US$8.35million (UGX30.7billion) investment will bring to Uganda the newest bottling line technology out of Germany, enabling the Company to innovate further for increasingly changing consumer demands.

The investment is part of a US$15 Million investment plan Coca-Cola Beverages Africa has for Uganda alone in 2018.

Minister of State for Investment and Privatisation, Hon. Evelyn Anite, officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony after conducting a tour of the Namanve Plant and welcomed Coca-Cola Beverages Africa’s additional investments.

She lauded Coca-Cola Beverages Africa for focusing on Uganda and spending the bulk of the US$8.35million (UGX30.7billion) within Uganda to benefit citizens and support the economy.

“Of this, I am told US$3.5million will be spent inside Uganda on civil works and construction and auxiliary services. That is a very significant amount for many reasons. First of all, that means that the bulk of the investment that we are launching today is going to be spent inside our own country and will directly benefit Ugandans. That fits well within our ‘Buy Uganda, Build Uganda’ policy and I applaud you for that. Also, your investment in a new Manufacturing Line creates more jobs for very many categories of Ugandans – which fulfills the NRM pledge to create more jobs and wealth especially for the youth of Uganda,” she said.

“As Government, we acknowledge and thank Coca-Cola for being a development partner of Uganda. On top of these investments, you also pay taxes – I understand you paid UGX140billion in taxes last year. This is a highly significant amount and we look forward to seeing it increase once this new investment begins to bear results. During the tour of the facility, it was gratifying to see the quality of your equipment and to note that you have two other bottling facilities in Uganda, and that you are still setting up more. By bottling high quality international brands in Uganda you are promoting the economy within Uganda and also promoting the country internationally,” she added.

Ag. Managing Director, Mr Patrick Oyuru assured guests of the investment commitments of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (Uganda), which runs three subsidiaries bottling Coca-Cola products (Century Bottling Company), pure natural mineral water (Rwenzori Bottling Company) and recycling plastic waste taken from the environment (Plastic Recycling Industries).

“We employ about 1,800 Ugandans in our three plants in Kampala, Mukono and Mbarara, and support more than 90,000 businesses across our extensive retail distribution network. Coca-Cola Beverages Africa is proud to make these contributions on top of paying taxes to the tune of more than UGX140billion annually. We are serious about doing business in Uganda and supporting this economy,” he said.

He added that the investment in the brand new US$8.35million Manufacturing Line was a strong demonstration of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa Uganda`s commitment to the development of Uganda despite the tough economic conditions.

“Because of this new Manufacturing Line, our 1,800 employees and hundreds of thousands of other Ugandans involved in selling our high quality products around the country will be assured of ongoing employment because production will increase. As well, the biggest bulk of this investment will be spent inside our own country and will directly benefit Ugandans. This fits well within the “Buy Uganda, Build Uganda” policy that Government is advocating. The new will create more jobs for various categories of Ugandans – which fulfills the Government pledge to create more jobs and wealth especially for the youth. This includes employees during the construction as well as additional employees when the new line is completed. We are happy to be contributing to the development of Uganda,” he added.

CCBA management emphasized that the Company will continue to be a relevant partner with Government and called upon the officials to ensure they work to limit the challenges private sector faces in doing business

Wilbrod Humphrey Owor, the Executive Director of Uganda Bankers Association

Wilbrod Humphrey Owor, the Executive Director of Uganda Bankers Association

By Wilbrod Humphrey Owor

As the period for publication of bank financial reports gets underway, it is a good time to start sharing reflections on the year 2017.

The year began with continued slow credit growth resulting from spillover effects of slow economic activity and high non-performing loans whose share to gross loans stood at 10.47 percent in December 2016. The high non- performing loan (NPLS) ratios were also partly attributed agricultural shocks, delayed payment of domestic arrears, slow down on growth of the real estate sector, continued instability in South Sudan and Eastern DRC and an overall tough economic environment among others. From preliminary results, total assets of the banking industry increased by 12% from Ugshs 23.7 Trn to Ugshs 26.5 Trn over the year to 31st December 2017.

All banks met the minimum regulatory capital adequacy requirements as at end of December 2017 and aggregate core capital and total regulatory capital ratios were at 21.1% and 23.4 % respectively.

Customer deposits grew by 12% from Ugshs 16.2 Trn to Ugshs 18.2 Trn but gross loans hardly grew by a marginal 1.5% from Ugshs 11.5Trn to Ugshs 11.7 Trn reflecting challenges in the credit space inspite of the monetary easing championed by the Central Bank during the year.

The key sectors of manufacturing, trade & real estate which constitute 12.6%, 18.7% and 20.5% of total industry lending respectively suffered heavily with trade & commerce registering a decimal growth of only 0.1%, while manufacturing and real estate actually slipped downwards by 1.1% and 2.9% respectively.

Banks exercised a lot of caution during the year and this effort dropped NPL ratios from the 10.5% of 2016 to 5.6% at end of December 2017.

The excess liquidity arising from the above is reflected in the liquid assets to total deposits ratio which increased from 42.5% to 54.6% over the year 2017 most of which was in investments in Government & Bank of Uganda Securities.

Bank holdings of BOU securities (Repos & deposit facility scheme) grew by 204.1% to Ush 2.5Trn. Overall the banking sector’s profitability improved significantly and average return on equity (ROE) and return on assets (ROA) improved to 16% and 2.7% respectively.

The major banking industry event of the year however, was the timely resolution of the Crane bank issue by Bank of Uganda without loss to depositors or contagion to the rest of the banking system. The Purchase and Assumption agreement entered between Bank of Uganda and dfcu bank guaranteed smooth transition and integration of customers into dfcu bank who were able to access their deposits seamlessly, did ensure continued stability in the industry. dfcu bank’s ability to mobilize USD50m at short notice to finance the transaction, followed by a successful rights issue, with 96% uptake, is a clear testament of the confidence investors have in Uganda’s financial sector.

It is this stability and confidence in the sector brought about by a combination of factors including consistency in monetary policy and regulatory frameworks, that must continue to be applauded and reinforced. The conversations today would be very different if depositors were unable to access their money and the exposure by other banks in the interbank lending market crystalized leading to what is called contagion (the communication of disease from one person or organism or institution to another by close contact).

The financial sector is in a way similar to blood pumped by the heart across the body. An infection can be dangerous, poisonous and can bring infection to other body parts, an un-coordinated policy direction be it monetary or fiscal can lead to numerous un-intended consequences of catastrophic proportions. Our own country has been through this path, and as a nation or group of institutions driving growth initiatives in the country, working together and harmonizing approaches must be the leading light ahead of us all the time.

The financial sector is a confidence industry that takes time to build and is measured by its resilience in the ability to absorb shocks. It however depends on the millions of silent depositors who oil it with savings and turnover from various businesses, taxes, transactions collections, payments and a combination of instruments etc. As policy makers or implementers, we must therefore constantly be alive to the impact of a policy signal to the financial sector.

Developing economies like ours must particularly be aware that we start from a very disadvantaged terrain with very low financial penetration and literacy levels anchored on a poor agrarian base.

The number of accounts in commercial banks increased from 4.5million in June 2015 to 7.4million in June 2017. Although this represents a decent growth, it is low considering Uganda’s population of nearly 40million people and is a far cry from the number of mobile phone accounts which is estimated to be over 23million.

Our efforts must therefore be towards encouraging and bringing on board the biggest proportion of our population into the formal financial sector where monetary policy can be transmitted effectively by initiatives that increase access to financial services, financial penetration, increasing access to credit, productivity, and markets which automatically widens the tax base to finance further development.

The financial sector is adjusting to these priorities by adapting technologies that deliver services to previously underserved or completely unserved markets and segments of the population.

Banks are increasingly sharing infrastructure (creating synergies) to enable them lower costs of delivery by pooling resources and reducing redundancy and its attendant costs. This allows for scalability, while focusing on introducing more and more services and products to address the needs of the various segments of the population. This process is journey that requires many travelers and partners to join hands.

The new developments such as Agent Banking will go a long way in expanding financial services, lowering costs of delivery and bringing services closer to customers, most importantly those that are currently financially excluded. In addition, Banks in collaboration with the regulator (Bank of Uganda) are working hard at increasing financial literacy initiatives and efforts to help reduce this barrier to use of banking and other financial services.

We call upon all stakeholders to join hands in ensuring financial sector stability, and its intended outcomes of penetration, deepening and growth.

As an industry, we embrace and will continue to support the national strategic objectives and vision therein and remain keen to work with the various agencies of government contributing to the development of the Country.

Are you really having good sex?

$

couple making out

By Bessie Fox

Some people say men are looking for good sex in a relationship and women are looking for love. Some studies have shown that, no, actually it is the women looking for good sex while men are searching for some kind of connection. Well, I will have you know that at the end of the day, none of that matters – not the studies, not even what everyone else is thinking. We all desire a connection and if we connect through sex, it had better be a damn good sexual adventure. Don’t you agree? But then again, so many people care so much about opinions and how they will be perceived if they openly talk about sex.

Talking about sex is a taboo. Even when talking to our bros and sisters, some of us edit our conversations like pros, often times taking out the best parts and replacing them with generalised words or code words. We get that, sex is private, and yet sex is the most selling topic in movies, advertising, and books. So, if we are seeing it everywhere, why not talk about it? Why wait to learn the “hard” way? Why pretend like we don’t care and then secretly Google about it.

After all is said and done, we need to have good sex, responsibly of course. However, we all can’t have good sex if we fail to make good and meaningful connections with our partners and friends. The idea of good and safe sex gets distorted when we think of getting STI’s, pregnant and for many of us who are seeking a connection, the fear of getting “used” and left with a broken heart is real. We have heard about those married couples who fight everyday and sleep in different rooms. One can only imagine what kind of sex they are having, if they are getting any. Most failed marriages today are ruined by bad communication, lack of trust, secrets and unevolved expectations in gender roles. All these failings eventually trickle down to sex, hence bad sex and then no sex, and then somehow we hear that our perfect couples are cheating on each other or that they are holding on because of the kids. What gives? A frustrated relationship is equal to bad sex and once it gets to that point, we all act like the relationship is no more.

The importance of exploring all the dynamics of good sex isn’t classified but rather justified. NTV’s Chicken and Chips show is an example of taking this topic by the horns. Topics about sex and relationships are openly discussed on the show, and on their social media platforms.

Chicken and Chips is not holding back to make anyone feel comfortable or to honour taboos, nope! Rather, it is disrupting the usual way of #KeepQuiet by asking all the questions we all want to ask but won’t.

You can watch the episodes for yourself every Sunday at 1:30pm or the replay on Friday at 4pm. They include “puppet reality TV” based on real conversations, and “talk of the town” filming people answering some deep questions on the streets of Kampala, plus music videos and “social experiments” that capture people on candid camera in funny situations.  Maybe you’ll have better sex once you get a chance to really talk about it!

Behind what may be the most expensive dinner concert in Uganda, there lies a humble soul named Zanie Brown.

On Sunday  evening, the singer held a dinner at Gardens Hotel, Entebbe where guests were charged $100 (Roughly UGX 360,000) for entrance and $1000 (UGX 3.6 Million) for a table.

The show was massively attended by corporate companies and key sector stakeholders in the country.

“She wanted an exclusive, special show for her fans,” said a close source. “In terms of ticket prices, this is one of the most expensive shows not only for the artist, but Uganda at large.”

At the show, as earlier publicized, the singer premiered her new song “Mugulu”, an inspirational, melodic track synonymous to her recent uplifting projects like “Muyaye.”

“Mugulu may not just be a track, it could be her album title too,” a source speculated when asked for details of the song.

Despite the subtle advertising, Zanie pulled, according to eye-witnesses, one of the most epic, well-attended plush dinners ever.

Miracle emerges winner in BB Naija 2018 edition

By Our Reporter

After three months of suspense, drama, intrigue and controversy, Africa’s biggest reality show, Big Brother Naija: Double Wahala came to an end with the in-house pilot, Miracle, emerging as the winner of 25 million naira cash, an SUV and other prizes with a combined worth of N45 million.

Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Bisola, hosted a live viewing in Lagos, Nigeria, and coverage of the show switched between the venues.

Nigerian serial hitmaker, Davido, kicked off proceedings with his hit track, ‘Fia’ and the five finalists, Tobi, Cee-C, Nina, Miracle and Alex were then joined in the house by Ebuka, who gave them opportunities to clear the air on several controversial issues.

The first eviction of the night was then announced, as Nina was told to leave the Big Brother house.

Viewers also got the chance to hear from past housemates who were in attendance at the Lagos venue, as Bisola probed them on their relationships and ventures outside the house.

A pair of performances followed, first with ‘Legbegbe’ crooner Mr. Real thrilling viewers and then Kaffy and the Magneto Dance Crew performing expertly choreographed dance moves.

Another eviction was up next, as Alex was also evicted from the Big Brother Naija house. Following further performances by Dice Ailes and Kaffy, Tobi became the next housemate to be evicted leaving Miracle and Cee-C as the top two finalists.

After a very tense moment on stage, the venue erupted as Miracle Igbokwe was unveiled as the winner of Big Brother Naija: Double Wahala, with the Regional Director of M-Net West Africa, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu presenting a cheque for 25 million naira.

Stanbic Bank has unveiled the 2018 regional winners of the Stanbic National Schools Championship after a debate competition which involved four schools in each region contesting for the regional title.

The schools crowned winners in the Northern, Eastern, Central and Western regions include; Muni Girls Secondary School, Nakanyonyi Girls’ Secondary School, Mengo Senior School and Bweranyangi Girls’ Senior Secondary School respectively.

Congratulating the schools upon their great success, Barbara Kasekende, Stanbic Bank CSI Manager said, “The Stanbic National Schools competition journey thus far has been challenging for the students but fruitful at the same time. I am more than excited for the schools that have made it this far and cannot wait to see what more these brilliant students have to offer. The regional debate competitions are in the fourth stage of the Stanbic National Schools Championship which started with classroom competitions, oral quiz competition, and essay competition. This year’s theme ‘Empowering the job creators of tomorrow’, seeks to nurture skills beyond the class room.

The four finalist schools will be hosted at a training boot camp which will equip the students with business soft skills, how to develop a business plan, networking, communication skills etc. that they will need to succeed in the real world.

The students will then be tasked to develop and execute the business plan in their respective schools. The school that presents the best executed plan at the finals to be held in Kampala will be crowned 2018 Stanbic National Schools Champions.

The four schools are expected to represent their respective regions at the Grand finale to be held in Kampala on 5th July 2018.

MTN Uganda revamps Kabarole Hospital, donates hospital equipment

Wim Vanhelleputte the CEO MTN Uganda hands over part of the beds, blankets and mosquito nets to the staff of Kabarole Hospital.

Wim Vanhelleputte, the CEO MTN Uganda hands over beds, blankets and mosquito nets to the staff of Kabarole Hospital.

MTN Uganda Foundation has handed over the revamped out-patient department (OPD) block of Kabarole Hospital Church of Uganda (C.O.U) and donated hospital equipment to benefit hundreds of patients who frequent one of Western Uganda’s busiest public hospitals.

During the handover ceremony, 10 hospital beds, 10 hospital mattresses, 10 hospital blankets and 10 mosquito nets were received by officials from the Ministry of Health and Kabarole Hospital.

This activity was done as part of the corporate social responsibility efforts of MTN Uganda carried out by its humanitarian arm, the MTN Uganda Foundation.

Speaking at the event, the MTN senior leadership was excited by the potential impact the donation will make to bring about long lasting change to Ugandans through provision of health care equipment.

“As part of the Access to Health Care initiative project, it is our aim as MTN Uganda to support the delivery of better quality health services to all across Uganda through the provision of hospital equipment” said MTN Uganda’s CEO, Wim Vanhelleputte, who was in Fort Portal to officiate at the event.

Access to quality health services is enshrined in the Goal Number 3 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The nine goals were developed in order to direct the path for development around the world.

According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the third SDG is “Good health and well-being” which targets “access to quality essential health-care services” for all.

“Our donation today is small but will go a long way to assist each and every patient who comes here to get better treatment by ensuring their stay here is made as comfortable as possible in order to aid their full healing and recovery” said MTN Uganda’s CEO, Wim Vanhelleputte.

The ‎Senior Manager Corporate Affairs at ‎MTN Uganda, Ms. Justina Ntabgoba-Kayemba, praised the work done by the staff of Kabarole Hospital, which has been in existence for almost 115 years, in delivery of health services to residents of Fort Portal.

“We congratulate the Kabarole Hospital staff for the great work done towards provision of outreach services, core clinical services, community health services and medical operational services. This donation will rejuvenate them to carry out their duties better”, she said.

The Medical Superintendent Kabarole Hospital, Mr. Edward Mugisha noted that the donation will enable the private-not- for-hospital become more self-sustaining and deliver affordable healthcare.

“The hospital is reliant on donor funding but this has been declining. The funds are used to cover utilities and provide for the staff leaving less money for us to finance our several infrastructure projects. This donation and renovation frees some resources to ensure we deliver affordable healthcare.”

The event was part of various corporate social responsibility activities carried out by MTN Uganda Foundation whose main objective is to improve the quality of life in communities across the country by supporting and implementing sustainable projects in education, health, art and sciences, sports and other national priorities.

Last month, Valery Okecho, Corporate Communications Manager, handed over 30 beds, 30 mattresses, 30 bedsheets, 30 blankets and 30 mosquito nets to the State Minister for Health (General Duties) Hon. Sarah Opendi and the Commissioner of Curative Services in the Ministry of Health Dr. Jackson Amone. The donations were given to benefit the services of Bwera Hospital in Kasese.

The MTN Uganda Foundation Access to Health Initiative (AHI) will see 500 hospital beds, 500 mattresses, 500 blankets and 500 nets be given out to hospitals around the country.
