This year the Voltagemusic Duo of Kent and Flosso have worked hard to push their brand to the top, and it appears their efforts are paying off. Word reaching our desk is that the duo has just inked a juicy deal to perform alongside Timaya in Jinja on 8th December.
Voltage Music duo, Kent and Flosso

While the amount of the deal remains unknown, an excited Kent Koojo confirmed that the deal to perform alongside Timaya had indeed been finalized with the sponsors and Kazoora, who is flying in the “Woyo” Star.

The Timaya show which is sponsored by Club Pilsner was moved to Jinja because of the Wizkid show that will happen over the same weekend.

At the same time the sponsors wanted Ugandans outside of Kampala to have a taste of why Timaya is celebrated around the continent.

In fact, it is for this reason that Kent and Flosso were chosen to perform alongside the “Dance” star. While responding to why Kent and Flosso was chosen, Kazoora confirmed that “We needed someone who could match Timaya’s talent and performance, and Voltage was the obvious choice”

Besides Voltage Music, the Timaya show which is expected to gather revelers from Kampala, Jinja and other towns in the east will also be graced by B2C, Kemishan and other local artists.

Uganda Farmers to benefit from capacity building by Agribusiness Development Centre

Farmer Based Organization’s (FBOs) that have potential to contribute to the agricultural value chain finally have a chance at improving their operations and ultimately become bankable.

The organization’s that currently lack technical or structural capacity to operate in a sustainable way have started receiving technical support from the Agribusiness Development Center (ADC) with the backing of dfcu Bank & Rabobank Foundation in Netherlands. Both dfcu & Rabobank Foundation have injected a combined USD 2.8million (two million eight hundred thousand US dollars) for the next five (5) years.

dfcu Bank board members with Agribusiness Development Centre and Rabobank Foundation executives show off the $2.8 million cheque for the ADC.

The Agribusiness Development Center (ADC) which started operations in October this year has skilled 44 farmer leaders from 20 FBOs from Lira, Dokolo, Kole, Alebtong and Oyam with skills in governance.

According to the ADC Executive Director, Anja de Feijter the ADC business advisory team is pre-visiting over 100 farmer based organisation’s (FBO’s) country wide in 2017. Since October 70 FBOs have been selected to receive the training skills in governance; financial management; financial literacy; marketing; risk assessment and so much more.

“With these skills, the Farmer Based Operations will continue to grow their operations in ways that are of benefit to both them and the wider communities,” she added.

Speaking at the official launch of ADC in Kampala today, dfcu Bank Chairman of the Board Jimmy D. Mugerwa, commended the efforts being taken by the farmer based organizations to acquire finances through forming groups. “Agriculture is the number one breadwinner for our country and there is need for collective effort to support it. By facilitating ADC in its operations dfcu and Rabobank are building capacity for the farmers to access much needed financial services,” he said.

“dfcu Bank already provides tailor-made products for the farmers and with the capacity building delivered through ADC the small holder farmers will be more eligible for financing from commercial banks. They will also be better placed to increase productivity and possibly embrace commercial farming which is more profitable at household and national level,” he added.

The launch was presided over by His Excellency Henk Jan Bakker, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherland who is also the patron of the ADC.

The Agriculture Development Centre started its operations in October 2017 in Eastern, Western, and Northern Uganda. Lira is the first District whose Farmer Based Organizations received two-day training in the introductory module for cooperatives.

ADC envisions promoting self-sufficiency as an effective tool to transform the agricultural sector in Uganda. This can be achieved by strengthening Farmer Based Organizations in respect of efficiency and creating economies of scale, in order to make them profitable, sustainable and bankable enterprises that are able to provide efficient and effective services to their farmers.

East African Development Bank Completes Another Medical Training in Cancer Management

Dr. Abrahams Omoding, a Specialist Medical Oncologist with the Uganda Cancer Institute during the training in Mbarara District

The East African Development Bank in partnership with the British Council and the Royal College of Physicians have concluded yet another medical training of selected medical practitioners in Western Uganda.

The training which took place in Mbarara, is part of a medical training programme that EADB is carrying out across four East African countries aimed at curbing the increasing dangers of Cancer while also sensitizing communities in these countries. EADB’s aim is to train 600 medical professionals within a period of four years, to specialize in the treatment of cancer and neurological disorders.

The East African Development Bank’s Medical Training and Fellowship Programme (METAF) is an EADB initiative to build capacity in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda in the fields of neurology and oncology. EADB’s mission is to promote sustainable social-economic development in East Africa by providing development finance support and advisory services.

Through the Medical Training and Fellowship(METAF) Programme, EADB aims to increase capacity towards early detection, research and access to treatment of cancer and neurological disorders by increasing the number, quality and deployment of medical doctors in public service with specialty training in the treatment cancer and neurological
disorders of in the East Africa region, especially in communities and areas where access to qualified professionals remains a challenge.

EADB is working in partnership with the British Council to manage and deliver the METAF Programme and with the Royal College of Physicians as the technical partner.

This is the fourth training taking place in Uganda. It follows similar trainings that were held St. Francis Hospital, Nsambya, at the Uganda Cancer Institute, Mulago in 2016 and in Soroti earlier this year. Other trainings have also taken place in Kenya and Tanzania.

There has been a recorded increase in the number of cancer patients in the region, and close to 80% of these patients find out when the cancer is in its late stages. Dr. Abrahams Omoding, a Specialist Medical Oncologist with the Uganda Cancer Institute and also one of the programme trainers says that Cancer now kills more people than
HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis combined.

Although the signs and symptoms of the disease are still not well-known in many communities, there have been tremendous efforts to sensitize people and train medical practitioners in early identification of cancer cases.
The programme continues to focus on early detection, research and treatment of cancer and neurological disorders especially in communities where access to qualified professionals remains a challenge.

“This course is key in down staying late cancer detection. By training the doctors on the most important information on the signs and symptoms of cancer, we shall improve the ability to identify cancers at an early stage.” said Dr. Omoding.

Ms. Vivienne Yeda, the Director General of EADB reiterates that EADB’s course objective is to upgrade the ability of the target group of physicians to be able to better manage the patients with common neurological disorders.

“We are receiving positive feedback from the doctors who have so far taken part in the trainings. Through these doctors, we are surely having an impact. The fight against cancer should be taken up by all of us and as EADB we shall continue to train doctors until we meet our target of training 600 medical practitioners in four years.” Ms. Vivienne Yeda added.

Doctors who attended the medical training programme in Mbarara were in agreement for an increased need of such trainings across the region.

“I have learnt a lot of new things and through this training, I will now be able to look at medical cases from a different aspect so as I can be able to diagnose my patients with utmost surety.” said one of the doctors that took part in the training.

Non Communicable Diseases, are not passed from person to person. They are of long duration and generally slow progression. Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and their risk factors are an emerging problem in East Africa although the focus has been directed to infectious diseases to a greater extent. EADB is thus extending a supporting
arm so as to raise awareness of the severity of NCDs.

These diseases are driven by forces that include ageing, rapid unplanned urbanization, and the globalization of unhealthy lifestyles. For example, globalization of unhealthy lifestyles like unhealthy diets may show up in individuals as raised blood pressure, increased blood glucose, elevated blood lipids, and obesity. These are called
‘intermediate risk factors’ which can lead to cardiovascular disease, a NCD.

All age groups and regions are affected by NCDs. Very often, these illnesses are associated with older age groups, but evidence shows that 16 million of all deaths attributed to NCDs occur before the age of 70. Of these ‘premature’ deaths, 82% occurred in low- and middle-income countries.

Children, adults and the elderly alike are all vulnerable to the risk factors that contribute to Non-communicable diseases, whether from unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, exposure to tobacco smoke or the effects of the harmful use of alcohol.

Maria Peggy Nabunya, Victoria University Kampala Guild PresidentBy Our Reporter

The new and first female guild president of Victoria University Kampala, Maria Peggy Nabunya, has laid out his priorities just a few days after being sworn in at a sumptuous ceremony last Saturday at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

The second year student of bachelor’s of science in public health, who also has been serving as the vice president of the Peter Isiko led guild cabinet, says she choose to go for the big job because she had many ideas for the university.

“I intend to work with the entire university to see that students continue to reap the fruits of the tuition they pay in terms of career growth, engaging students in activities that encourage us to be job creators as opposed to being job seekers. I also intend to have VU engage in more inter-university activities.” She said in a brief statatement highlighting what she intends to do for the university.

“Being guild president to me means challenging myself to know my capabilities. It means empowerment and inspiration to younger women like myself to aim for the highest and believe that in order to see a difference, you have to be that difference first.” She added.

Meanwhile, Victoria University also launched its alumni association last Saturday, at the same function. Dr. Martin Aliker, the University’s chancellor in a brief speech said that ‘with the launch of the alumni association, you will be able to interact and be able to keep in touch with the university. The more you keep in touch with the University the more you will make the university famous because of what you are doing outside the university.’

Opinion: If 1% of Uganda’s Population Started Mining Bitcoin, UEGCL Would Have To Construct A New Dam Every 2 Months

bitcoin

By Ian Ortega

It is now clear that there is no escaping the Bitcoin revolution. Bitcoin is here to stay, and so is Blockchain, the technology upon which Bitcoin runs. Yet even more scary is the power consumption that is used up in the Bitcoin mining process.

An individual bitcoin transaction is estimated to use up 300kwh of electricity, an equivalent of boiling over 30,000 kettles of water.

Current global Bitcoin energy usage is 0.13 percent of the world’s electricity consumption. According to Joel Bellenson, at Bitcoin’s current growth rate of 30% per month, Bitcoin mining energy consumption will exceed global solar energy production before the next Christmas. “It will take 25 months until Bitcoin mining completely eradicates human civilisation,” he notes. “25 months at current bitcoin mining energy growth rate of 30% per month before mining exceeds 100% of all the electricity on the planet.”

The bitcoin users are estimated to be peaking towards 18 million, as per those with a Bitcoin wallet. As per UETCL records, “Uganda’s peak power system demand currently stands at 500 MW against an installed generation capacity of 851.53MW.”

This implies, that if 1% of Uganda’s population were to start mining bitcoin, UEGCL would have to construct a new dam with the same capacity of Karuma every 2 months. And this should be a very scary thought for the Electricity bodies as Bitcoin could prove to be a bigger threat to energy usage than anything.

But is UEGCL prepared for such an eventuality? Would it cope if Bitcoin mining and transactions became the order of the day in the country? Probably this may not happen. And we could see a country coming to a total standstill. The country then may surely need to open up conversations about Bitcoin and Blockchain.
