Defending Stephen Kiprotich finishes 14th at the 2016 Olympics

Stephen Kiprotich flies the flag for Uganda as he wins the Olympic marathon at London 2012

The 2012 London Olympic gold medalist and 2013 World champion, Stephen Kiprotich has today failed to defend his crown after finishing 14th at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.

Solomon Mutai was Uganda’s best performer on the day having finished 8th in the men’s 42km marathon that has been won by Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge.

Kipchoge emerged winner to scoop the Gold medal with a time record of 2:08:44 while Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lelisa came second with a record time of 2:09:54 to win Silver and before USA’s Galen Rupp at 2:10:05.

Despite finishing 8th, Mutai set a season best time record of 2:11:49 whereas his counterpart Kiprotich managed 2:13:32 on the day.

Jackson Kiprop was the other Ugandan participant but finished 80th in 2:22:09
