Last week, renowned producer David Washington Ebangit protested the lack of compensation from Ugandan musicians for the songs he wrote and produced for them.
He expressed his extreme dissatisfaction from Ugandans artistes for not adhering to the copy right law for music that made most of them hugely successful today.
The producer that compared himself to the famous Dr. Dre insists on fighting for young producers today who are not aware of these copy right laws and royalties that are expected to be given to not only him but all stakeholders in the Creative and Performing Arts industry.
Washington also expressed strong disapproval of illegal music distribution platforms that not only have prevented musicians from earning money from their work but also kept these Royalties to themselves as well.
For those that may not fully understand this; Music royalties are payments made to the owner of a copyrighted music work for the use of that work. These payments can come from various sources, including radio play, streaming services, live performances, and more.
He cited having worked with a variety of singers, including; Cindy, Bobi Wine, Bebe Cool, Wiz Kid, Radio and Weasal.
Some of the songs Washington named include;- Adam Ne Kaawa (Bobi Wine), Eddiba (Juliana Kanyomozi), Gold Digger (Jackie Chandiru), Lonely (Bebe Cool), Don’t Cry (Wizkid ft GoodLyfe) and Love Letter (Lilian Mbabazi), among so many others.
The producer, who claimed to be financially stable, mentioned that many producers and musicians are facing financial difficulties because they do not receive as much money from their music due to digital platforms freely distributing their music.
He clarified that his issue is not with the musicians themselves, but with the illegal distributors of their music.
