Master Class with Tom Schreiber during the on going Amakula International Film Festival

By Staff Writer

Amakula International Film Festival is an annual film festival founded in 2004 by Dutch film historian Alice Smits and American filmmaker Lee Elickson that takes place in Uganda

Amakula is Uganda’s oldest film festival and the first Amakula Kampala International Film Festival was launched on May 21, 2004.The festival features programs like the screenings, panel discussions, workshops, seminars and the Golden Impala awards ceremony, which is the climax of the festival.

For the years the festival has been around, Amakula has managed to change the Uganda movie industry, giving filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their works to the general public and their tendency of screening movies from across the continent has helped the local filmmakers a lot since they have learned from the foreign film makers, who are technically superior.

We managed to talk to a few filmmakers and Curators about Amakula International Film Festival who praised it for grooming local talent and giving them an opportunity to showcase their works.

Mathew Nabwiso, a producer and film maker whose movie, Rain, is among the movies to be screened at the 11th edition of the festival, revealed how it has helped to market Ugandan movies.

“Amakula is just like any other festival across the world. It is a platform that exhibits movies, creating for them market and I am super excited about Rain, a movie I am part of that is set to be screened at this year’s edition” Mathew told this website.

Another filmmaker we managed to get a comment from was Aaron Zziwa, behind movies like Wako (2015), Superstition (2014) and Break In (2017). Aaron also praised Amakula International Film Festival for the huge role they have played in promoting Uganda’s movie industry.

“It is one of the film festivals that is on an international level, it laid a fundamental foundation in the Ugandan movie industry due to its uniqueness since it was the first of its kind. Unfortunately I was unable to get my movie to be screened on this year’s edition due to the stiff competition that was there and this shows you how the industry is growing and has produced a lot of talented film makers” Aaron noted.

“Like in the previous editions, I hope this year’s too they introduce us to film distributors since they are the people that take our movies to the end user”, he added.

In 2012, Amakula screened Kenya’s Nairobi Half Life, a movie that turned out to be a success across the world getting international awards’ nods and Dar Noir which won the best feature film at the last Amakula Edition (2016) got a lot of attention worldwide.

Polly Kamukama one of the curators of the festival noted that “The Cinema industry in Africa is virtually controlled by Hollywood and therefore little local movies are shown in cinemas hence one of the aims for this Festival is to enable filmmakers across Africa get audience for their movies since from different parts of the continent”

“We have over 42 films set to be screen during this year’s edition and most of them are African including 19 from Uganda” he added

kabaka birthday run 2018 launched

Airtel Uganda has announced its sponsorship of the 2018 Kabaka Birthday Run that will be held on Sunday, 8th April 2018.

In line with the three year theme announced last year, Fight against Sickle Cells, proceeds from the run will also be directed towards fighting the sickle cells disease in Uganda.

Last year, Airtel Uganda, in partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, handed over 60,000 sickle cell testing kits, bought from the proceeds of the Kabaka Birthday Run 2017, to the administration of The Uganda National Health Laboratory Services to enable them carry out conclusive testing for the prevalent disease. The kits would allow over 120,000 people to test for the sickle cells disease free of charge.

Commenting about the sponsorship, Airtel Uganda Managing Director Mr. V.G. Somasekhar noted that Corporate Social Responsibility is very central to Airtel and is an integral pillar of the business.

“Through our partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, we have been able to change the lives individuals and communities in Uganda. This year, we intend to continue this life changing work by collecting funds that will be used to educate Ugandans about sickle cells, enable proper treatment of patients and fund research into how best we can contain it,” he stated.

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayigga thanked Airtel Uganda and other partners; such as the Ministry of Health in the Central Government and Uganda Sickle Cell Foundation, for their sponsorship, which has brought awareness and funding to illnesses that have dominated Uganda for many years.

“First, we worked together to tackle fistula and now we are focusing on sickle cells. With strategic and consistent partners such as Airtel Uganda, we shall win the fight against these sicknesses that are claiming lives of very many Ugandans,” he commented.

The Kabaka run – an annual event celebrated to mark the King’s birthday – is part of a partnership that the telecommunications giant has with the Buganda Kingdom to sponsor four of their most important activities; the Kabaka’s birthday Run, Kabaka’s birthday celebration, the Kabaka’s coronation as well as Eid El Fitri. Airtel Uganda also sponsors the Masaza Cup – the Buganda kingdom football tournament.

The run will be held on 8th April 2018 and participants will be flagged off in Lubiri Mengo by His Majesty the Kabaka for the 5km, 10kms and 21km routes.

UCC Applauds Amakula International Film Festival

By Staff Writer

Uganda Communications Commission acknowledged Amakula International Film Festival’s role in developing the local film industry.

Speaking during the festival’s panel discussion on Film regulation in Uganda at the Uganda Museum on Friday, Ruth Kibuuka thanked Amakula for its role in improving the film industry in Uganda.

“I would like to thank Amakula and other festivals for the role they play in organizing film trainings all year round.”, Kibuuka told the audience at the panel discussion, which included film makers, actors, film experts and journalists.

She said this after coming under fire from the audience which wanted to know why UCC concentrated its efforts in film development around the Uganda Film Festival, which is only a one week film bonanza.

“Unlike Amakula which liaises with Kampala Film School, UCC has budgetary constraints, which cannot allow us to do everything we want to do.”, Kibuuka explained.

During the panel discussion, various film stakeholders expressed concern that UCC was not doing enough to support film makers through capacity building activities like trainings, seminars and workshops, as well as setting up the long promised, but unfulfilled film fund.

However, some of the attendees we talked to expressed their gratitude to the Bayimba foundation, organizers of the Amakula International Film Festival for focusing their efforts on not only providing exposure for local films through this prestigious festival, but also availing capacity building facilities like workshops and seminars, as well as their partnership with Kampala Film School, which has trained many professionals in the film industry.

This comes on the back of comments made by Kampala Film School Head of Studies, Cristiano Civitillo, who urged Ugandan film stakeholders to work together for the good of their film industry, and not expect foreigners to develop the industry for them.

While addressing the issue of showing Ugandan movies in the mainstream Cinemas Ruth revealed how there’s a possibility of passing a law which orders the cinemas to show local content and that they are moving forward upon implementing it
